Man arrested for illegal electricity connections

A

member of the public has been aarested in Yeoville for being in possession of a stolen conventional electricity meter which was illegally connected to his property. Recently, Mayor Mashaba led a team from Region F on a joint operation to Yeoville to encourage compliance with our by-laws. Priority precincts including Raleigh Street, Grafton Street, Hunter Street and Becker Street which have become riddled with a number of challenges, including health concerns, were identified. The operation further

discovered water and electricity meters which had been tampered with by shop owners; this resulted in immediate terminations of services by Johannesburg Water and City Power at those properties. The property in this case was disconnected twice by City Power officials. The owner illegally reconnected the property in both occasions. This was a level 3 cut off and the meter was confiscated from the owner. An investigation conducted by the City’s Group Forensic and Investigation Services (GFIS) has established that the meter was reported as stolen

from City Power stores in 2002 and an insurance claim was submitted. The arrested member of the public was detained at the Yeoville Police Station and was scheduled to appear in court. “It is quite disturbing that despite disconnecting the electricity supply to this property and confiscating the meters, someone from City Power reconnected the services and provided another meter to the member of the public. He has been stealing electricity from the City for a number of years. We will not tolerate this kind of lawlessness in

the City,” said Cllr Mashaba. “Our anti-fraud and corruption unit, working together with the South African Police Service (SAPS), will continue to investigate the matter. Those that are involved including our officials will face the full might of the law. “I would also like to encourage people to report any fraud and corruption activities through our 24hour tipoff hotline 0800 002 587 or visit the GFIS offices situated at 48 Ameshoff Street in Braamfontein,” Mashaba concluded.

Helping young writers to escape into the world beyond their own his own childhood memories, vigorously attempted to salvage what was left and set forth creating a storybook of memories. And with just his old home PC, a small printer, guillotine and binding glue, Bala Books was born. “Schooling children and adolescents in the art of storytelling and authoring books, based on the plethora of imagination that lies deep within their hearts waiting to be discovered, is like experiencing the magic for the very first time, and Bala Books enables children to do just that,” says Kaiser. Fast forward to today and Bala Books offers an authentic and invaluable learning experience through book-writing programmes designed to school children in the anthologies of authoring a

book. Each child-authored book draws the readers into the world beyond their own ... a realm where children’s fantasies come to reality. At the end of each programme, children walk away with a keepsake copy of their work and a wealth of knowledge. Selected children’s books are published through Bala Books and the children are the recipient of a publishing deal. Glad says that what inspires him the most is children and working for children. “Children are my biggest inspiration, being around them teaches me a lot — their childlike characteristics; innocence, playfulness, happiness, laughter, wonder, and world beyond my own” — say’s Kaiser.

City of Johannesburg Mayor sends well wishes to joburgers “whatever you may choose to do, or wherever you may choose to visit during this festive season, please keep safe, especially on our roads. I wish all our residents a blessed, joyous, and peaceful festive season” - Cllr Herman Mashaba

Staff Reporter news@inner-city-gazette.co.za

C

ity of Johannesburg Executive Mayor, Cllr Herman Mashaba has sent his well wishes to residents of Johannesburg in a festive statement. “Dear residents, with the arrival of the festive season, comes an opportunity for all of us to reflect on the year that has been 2017. For me, it has brought with it the chance to make

a difference in the lives of others. In my role as the Mayor for the City of Johannesburg, I had the opportunity to see communities get greater access to health care through the implementation of extended operating hours at clinics; seen 3672 title deeds given to residents who have never known the joy and dignity of owning a home,” he said. “I witnessed residents take ownership of their communities by helping to clean the city

through the A Re Sebetseng clean-up campaign; and have felt in immense pride in seeing 1500 residents enter the City’s service as new JMPD trainee officers, who will help to keep our cities safe in the not so distant future. “Despite all this, there is still much to be done in order to bring improved service delivery to our residents throughout the City. I remain up to that challenge.

“I would ask that we spare a thought or a prayer for those less fortunate than us, and where possible, that we give back to our communities in whatever little way we can. “Finally, whatever you may choose to do, or wherever you may choose to visit during this festive season, please keep safe, especially on our roads. I wish all our residents a blessed, joyous, and peaceful festive season,” concluded Mashaba.

fficers from the SAPS and the JMPD, aided by park patrollers in colourful bibs are highly visible at flagship parks run by Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) this festive season. The officers, some on horseback, are out in full force to ensure the safety, good behavior of revelers in parks and to keep criminals at bay. The patrollers, who are paid a stipend for their efforts, are mostly local youngsters familiar with the surroundings and eager to assist. They are keeping an eye on kids playing on swings, slides, merry go rounds and jungle gyms. The parks over the festive season are freely accessible and should be top of mind for families and children wanting to play outside. The aim is to have good clean fun with family and friends without being a nuisance to other users of the park. If you contravene the bylaws and break the rules, expect to be searched, have your liquor confiscated, or even be arrested if you are disorderly. At Thokoza Park in the south of Johannesburg, the JCPZ has deployed 30 pa-

trollers who are working with officers from the Moroka Police Station and the JMPD to enforce by-laws in the park. This heightened visibility of the police and patrollers will act as a deterrent and will be effective until Feb-

ruary, says Kgantshe Mofokeng, JCPZ’s Stakeholder Relations Officer for Region D. “It is part of JPCZ’s Park Safety Programme which seeks to educate users and enforce compliance of bylaws in our parks.”
