‘I welcome foreign nationals into our city and country’ - Mashaba ‘All I have asked is that those who visit, do so lawfully, and while they are here, they respect our laws.’ By Moses Moyo mosesmoyo@icloud.com

S

peaking at a press briefing in Johannesburg recently, Cllr Mashaba took time to address his position on illegal immigrants. “This mediation process has given me an opportunity to clarify my position on the issue of migration within the City of Joburg, rather than people relying on sound bites and headlines that are unfortunately the result of selective coverage of my statements. Responding to earlier assertions by the media and other groups that the City of Joburg could be fuelling xenophobia as it sought to address illegal migration in the city, Cllr Mashaba said, “From the outset, I would like to state that I condemn xenophobia in all its manifestations, and I will ensure that those who intend perpetuating violence against immigrants, face the full might of the law,” he said. “At the same time, I am committed to ensuring that the rule of law is upheld in our city, and that no criminal, whether from South Africa or any other country, feels safe on our streets. “I am committed to ensuring that Johannesburg becomes a safer place for all residents to live, work, and play. “I welcome foreign nationals into our city and country. All I have asked is that those who visit, do so lawfully, and while they are here, they respect our laws. “I would love every citizen of the world to visit our city and invest in growing our economy and creating jobs for our people,” the Mayor added. Cllr Mashaba also reitareted the contribution made by for-

eign nationals — “They buy goods in our country, establish businesses, and stimulate economic growth. They can also contribute their skills and experience in sectors of our economy where it is desperately needed. This is key to my vision of creating a more prosperous and inclusive city,” Mashaba noted. “Indeed, in its 130 year history, Johannesburg has been built by migrants from across our country and the world. This is a tradition I wish to see continued. “It is without doubt that the challenge of illegal immigration in Johannesburg has reached crisis level. “The issue of migration is one that cannot be dealt with at municipal level comprehensively, instead it requires the willing participation of the national government. “The City of Joburg will be engaging the services of top flight Constitutional experts, led by Advocate Dali Mpofu and Advocate Tembeka Ngcukaitobi. I expect papers to be filed in court in the coming weeks. “I would like to welcome the African Diaspora Forum’s commitment to join this matter as friends of the court. “Let me make one thing clear – I am not calling for undocumented migrants to be immediately deported. “What I am doing, is calling for the Department of Home Affairs to perform on their constitutional mandate and ensure that all those who qualify for asylum or other permits are processed and provided with their papers timeously. “Should individuals not qualify, or should they have committed crimes within our borders, then they should be sent home. We all want to see this city, country, and the African continent prosper,” concluded Cllr Mashaba”

fter Judge Siraj Desai rejected a plea from Van Breda’s legal team for the accused’s testimony not to be broadcast by media, it did not take long for Van Breda to morph from a relatively composed young man on the stand to an individual who seemed visibly uncomfortable recounting his recollections of the night his family died – and the maniacally laughing intruder he says killed them all”, wrote Rebecca Davis Do these headlines get you thinking? Have you been following this trial with interest? Are you currently studying law or interested in a career in law? If these headlines stir something inside you may consider pursuing a career in law. Career options for lawyers in South Africa include being admitted as an attorney and/or as an advocate. Attorneys have a good working knowledge of all aspects of the law. They work in law firms and are the initial legal contact for a client with a legal dispute or problem. Attorneys brief advocates if the matter is referred to court and is not able to be settled. Attorneys in South Africa are also able to appear in court and represent clients should they have their right of appearance. Advocates specialise in specific legal fields and will argue legal matters in front of a judge should the matters be referred to court for argument and/ or hearing. Many law graduates, once admitted as attorneys and with the required post qualification experience usually end up becoming in-house legal advisors within a legal department of a company or working within a private practice law firm. So if you do not open up your own practoce or work for a law firm, there are other options and career paths. Barry Schwartz of The Professiona Law School provides the following tip, “Try and get vac work and job shadow as early as possible. You should

be able to do this at most top law firms. This is a great opportunity to network, mix with professionals, and see how the law environment operates on a day to day basis. It also looks good on your CV and your networking may help you secure articles later on”. Schwartz notes that in order to be admitted as an attorney you have to complete two years of law articles, where you will work as a “candidate attorney” under the supervision of an attorney. Some are concerned that they may not easily secure articles. “While this may happen – don’t become anxious and don’t give up!” says Schwartz. “Move on to plan B”. Keep regular tabs on the online Job-Boards in which law firms may list their vacancies for law articles. Continue to apply to as many firms as you need to - see https://www.golegal.co.za/careers/. Consider applying for articles at the public prosecutor or at a legal clinic. These positions may not be as prestigious as those at a law firm, but the experience is good, and the environment is exciting and interesting” Schwartz also advises to consider also starting your practical legal training. This will keep you busy while searching for law articles. Another option is to join the Bar and become an advocate, or apply for a job at a bank, insurance company or a large corporate that have their own in-house legal department. When you commence your articles it is important to register your contract with the relevant law society within 2 months of starting.

Generally the process involves sending your employment contract to the law society together with a registration fee and a cover letter. Practical legal training (PLT) is a compulsory course that every prospective attorney has to complete before they can be admitted as an attorney. It may be in-house at a big firm, or can be studied full-time or part-time. Investigate your options. “I am always available to give advice”, says Schwartz, renowned for his personal attention to all his students. “Keep in mind that if you do the full time 5 month course you are entitled to reduce your articles by 1 year.” Even with articles you are not done! “Attorneys’ Admission Examinations are usually written every February and August. There are 4 exams and you can choose which ones you want to write and when”, says Schwartz.

Residents help to clear out the rubbles after 200 shacks were destroyed by fire in Joburg

Mangolongolo fire tragedy Where can the poor go? Many choose shantytowns over other available options. Shantytowns are proof of the inability of government to keep up with the demand for affordable housing for the poor. 23 years into democracy, have shack dwellings been normalised?

nother fire disaster happened at “Mangolongolo Informal Settlement next to Denver Hostel on Monday the 20th October, more than 200 shack homes were burnt to ashes. The fire was started during daytime in one shack. It is alleged that a domestic fight caused the fire that spread and destroyed the shacks. The residents lost everything because there were not many people to help put out the fires as most had gone to work and only a few, mainly women were present. The City of Johannesburg Emergency services responded on time, there was not much they could do because the fire had spread very quickly due to windy conditions. No injuries or fatalities were reported. LEFT HOMELESS: A couple affected by the Mangolongolo fire is left homeless after their belongings were destroyed by the inferno Visuals sponsored by:

75-year-old retirees hit Jackpot “I woke up poor and went to bed rich!”

Staff Reporter news@inner-city-gazette.co.za

E

very South African senior citizen deserves a secure and comfortable retirement. For two 75-year-old PowerBall winners this rang true when they both learnt of their Powerball winnings – R13 million for a Limpopo pensioner and R6 million for Western Cape pensioner. Even though the pair have never met, they shared a common excitement when realising they are one of South Africans oldest millionaires. A regular Powerball player in his twilight years, the Western Cape pensioner says even though he is officially retired he still keeps busy with small construction/building projects. “I have always believed in hard work and earning a living for my family, now that I

am retired there is no reason to stop working.” The PowerBall jackpot winner bought four PowerBall tickets from the Post Office. He checked the following day and as he states: “I woke up poor and went to bed rich!” He says he shared his winning news with his wife and kids, and immediately plans to build a bigger house for his wife and grandchildren. “I am also planning on buying a reliable vehicle so that I can take my wife on a long road trip across South Africa.” For Free State retiree, he showed that senior citizens do keep up with the times and always plays his Powerball via his banking phone app. “My wife constantly tells me about my beeping phone because of text messages, well this time around I told her my SMS’s were the

“If the elderly winner didn’t save enough for his pension and winning is a last rescue, he would be advised to get great medical aid” bearer of good news, we have won the PowerBall,” he says cheerfully. Tips for pensioners from Ithuba winner services financial advisors According to financial advisor Mbuso Shange: Financial planning must always be done in the interest of the client. I would find out from the elderly winner how his family relations are like – if bad I would quickly advise he/she buy into a retirement village. If good, Shange recommends he/she shares his

winnings with children or grandchildren. The bulk of the winnings Shange advises investing in order to generate a monthly income from his winnings. If the elderly winner didn’t save enough for his pension and winning is a last rescue, he would advise them to get great medical aid, and even though costly at R4000 a month it is a necessity at this age. “Because we understand that winning the lottery is both a very exciting and potentially overwhelming experience. It is with this in mind that Ithuba established the Winner Services department, which offers a number of complimentary services to people with winnings above R50 000. The aim is to equip our winners with tools to best invest their winnings and to cope with this sudden life-changing event,” states Ithuba.

Hundreds join Freedom Ride This year’s Freedom Ride also coincided with the event hosted by Gauteng Tourism to promote tourism at Vilakazi Street in Soweto Staff Reporter news@inner-city-gazette.co.za

H

undreds of cyclists in Soweto saddled up early on Sunday for the sixth annual Freedom Ride Jozi to celebrate the memory of Former President Nelson Mandela. From Orlando Stadium cyclists headed to Vilakazi Street where one of Mandela’s house is located. The same street also has Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu’s house located a few metres from Madiba’s house. On their way to the finish point at Orlando Stadium, cyclists wheezed past numerous historic sites which included the Bara Mall, Power Park, Chris Hani Road, Maponya Mall, Regina Mundi Church, Elias Motsoaledi Road, Vilakazi Street and proceed to Mooki Street. Gauteng Premier David Makhura and Transport MEC Ismail Vadi took part in the ride, joining TV personality and businessman Dali Tambo and his wife, Rachael, to pedal through the streets of Soweto. This year’s Freedom Ride also coincided with the event hosted by Gauteng Tourism to promote tourism at Vilakazi Street in Soweto. Premier Makhura said: “For us what is important is to also use this day to promote township tourism. One of the things that we agreed with the City of Johannesburg is that Vilakazi Street will be closed every Sunday to cars. “It’s a nightmare when you go to Vilakazi

Closing it for cars means opening it for cyclists as we want to promote a non-motorised transport in our province.” “We want to distribute as many bicycles as possible in the townships. We also want to promote the cities that are friendly to the environment. I’m so excited to hear that a number of bicycles have been donated and distributed in Soweto and Alexandra to young cyclists that we see here today through a partnership between Qhubeka and the City of Johannesburg,” said Premier Makhura. Lisa Seftel, Executive Director for Transport in the City of Johannesburg, said the 20 kilometre ride had no injuries reported. She added that it was free and part of Freedom Ride’s ongoing aim to get more people to cycle and to reclaim the city by biking there. “The previous routes of the Freedom Ride had included northern suburbs like Sandton, the area around Johannesburg Zoo, Yeoville and even Hillbrow. We decided to take it to Soweto this year as part of promoting township tourism,” said. An excited Siyabonga Ntsele (14) from Dube in Soweto said: “It was very easy to finish this year’s ride. I love cycling and this was my second year now participating in the Freedom Ride. It was difficult last year but I also managed to finish it.” Angelo Jaars (21) from Snake Park, Soweto, said: “It was my first time but I really enjoyed it. I was prepared as I train once a week alone and train with a team on weekends. I

also want to thanks our cycling club from Snake Park. The club organised me a bicycle.” The Freedom Ride was started in 2014 by cycling activists in partnership with the City of Johannesburg and Freedom Ride, which is a non-profit organisation based in Johannesburg. “Our aim is to encourage all South African

cities to take on this initiative and promote cycling as a way of transport, connecting communities and creating greener, unified cities for all,” said Hugh Fraser, a board member of the Freedom Ride. Freedom Ride also promotes a programme called Cycle Friday and has bike maps on its website showing cycling-friendlier routes in Johannesburg.
