Accolades for Ivy academy

vy Academy, a private high school in Johannesburg, was established in 2014. “When we began this school we had the intention of getting the personal best out of every pupil and assisting them to achieve academic and social success,” says Kathy Martin, school Principal. “We decided that we needed an alternative approach to High School education. One that involves mentoring, nurturing, praise and bringing out nd recognising the individuality of each pupil”. Earlier this year the school itself was invited to the Gauteng Education Department Awards Ceremony in order to be presented with not one, but two awards from the Department.

Martin proudly accepted one award for the school achieving a 100% pass rate in 2016. The second award was for the recognition of the development and improvement achieved by the school in the few years since it has been established.

“We are so proud of our staff and our students who never fail to rise to our expectations of excellence,” said Martin after accepting the awards.

“We know that choosing a school for children can be a confusing process,” says Martin. “Parents are often overwhelmed with choices available to them. And trying to include what they want from a school together with what their child wants complicates the process,” she says. However, for all concerned, choosing a school with glowing recognition from the department of education paves the way for excellence!

Parents’ goal of education must surely be that their children achieve the best possible results academically. This will ensure that they are in the best position to be employable and ultimately self-sustaining and productive members of socie-

ty. Included in this goal is the potential for all children to live fulfilling and meaningful lives.

“An education system also needs to assess the context in which it is functioning,” says Martin. “We incorporate cultural activities and encourage participating in competitions so that our students can grow and develop.”

Robber sentenced to 33-years in jail Staff Reporter news@inner-city-gazette.co.za

A

kim Masuku, a 25-yearold male was found guilty for armed robbery, attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

He was sentenced to 33-years in prison at Johannesburg District Court.

His conviction - for armed robbery, the accused was sentenced to 15-years imprisonment, for attempted murder 10 years imprisonment. 5-years were also added for possession of unlicensed firearm, in addition, 3-years were added for possession of ammunition.

Masuku will serve an effective 25 year imprisonment.

It is alleged that, Masuku was part of three suspects who robbed four males at MTN Taxi rank.

According to a statement issued

by Johannesburg Central SAPS Captain, Xoli Mbele, the victims were busy packing their stock when they were confronted by the suspects; they pointed firearms at them and took their money, cell phones and jacket.

The robbers then ordered the victims to run away and shot a 25-year old male once in the arm before they fled the scene.

It is further alleged that, one of the victims saw the suspects at corner Noord and Eloff Street and alerted the police, noticing the presence of the police they ran away in different directions.

Police managed to apprehend one suspect. A firearm with no serial number and live rounds were recovered from him.

Fortunately, the victim shot was taken to hospital by an ambulance where he was treated.

Ethopian national shoots man

ohannesburg Central Detectives arrested a 38-year old male for the murder of a 25-year old man at Germiston on the 13th of September.

It is alleged that the suspect shot a man once in the upper body at Mayfair on the 10th of September 2017 late in the evening.

The victim was taken to hospital by an ambulance where he succumbed to his gunshot wounds and passed on

the following day.

The motive for the shooting is not yet known, the suspect who was on the run since the incident occurred was arrested through the help of the community.

“We would like to thank the community for being the eyes and ears of the police. Working together will keep our community safe,” said Captain Xoli Mbele in a statement.

Dear Pikitup Management EKhaya Neighbourhood is very concerned of the situation of the cleanliness in Hillbrow. Please can you give us light of what is happening as partners in service delivery . In your last communication e-mail you had given us hope that you will continue giving service to the area however, Pikitup and Metro police have disappeared in the streets leaving the businesses of property owners in disarray.

Pikitup is not visible in the streets, there is no communication from yourselves as to why Pikitup is not cleaning.

Our supporting cleaners are very few to cope and the disrupting group keeps coming to thrash the streets.

Good evening Bafikile Pikitup has tried its best and by all means to continue cleaning Hillbrow and Joubert Park, but as we clean the ex J@W or other elements continue to disrupt services by tearing filled bags, high jacking full trucks and force them to dump their waste in streets and intimidating our staff. Several staff members have now been injured and they are threatened and staff feel unsafe and the disrupters say that this disruption will continue. We had an emergency meeting with the Mayor today and he was not impressed with the situation continuing and have given instructions to JMPD and SAPS to address the situation and support Pikitup to continue service delivery. At this stage Pikitup can only work with protection and it is not possible to have it for all 3 shifts. We are going back tonight and hope that we will be allowed to work. We are putting in all efforts to have services resorted by week end. Your continuous support is appreciated. We will keep you up to date on progress.

ohannesburg Central Cluster Crime Combatting Unit arrested three suspects between the ages of 22 to 34 for possession of a hi-jacked motor vehicle at New Junction Mall in Newtown recently.

It is alleged that three suspects hijacked a 38-year old male with his friend at Thornton street in Westdene. The victims were in a blue

Audi vehicle when a black Golf 5 blocked their way. The alleged hijackers came to the driver’s window and pointed firearms at them.

“They jumped into his car and forced him to the back, while his friend was taken to the hijacker’s vehicle.

“They drove off with them until they were dropped in the open veld, in Lenasia. Their cellphones and cash were taken from them,” said Johannesburg Central SAPS Cap-

tain Xoli Mbele. Police spotted the car parked at the New Junction Mall underground parking. They monitored the vehicle until the occupants of the vehicle jumped in.

No firearms were recovered from them. Police investigation is under way and suspects are detained in Johannesburg Central cells for possession of a hi-jacked motor vehicle and they will also face another charge at Sophiatown police station for car hi-jacking.

ecently, the Johannesburg District Health embarked on Health Envi-ronmental and Safety Awareness campaign with an effort to reduce infant and child mortality in Gauteng. The campaign that targeted hospitals, clinics and funded Non-Governmental Organisations took at Assembly hall, Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital.

Deputy Director for Occupational Health and Safety in Gauteng Department of Health, Refiloe Bodibe to be among dignitaries and she said: “We are gathered here today because of the environmental health campaign. This campaign focuses on health environmental issues and

with an aim to solve them completely.”

The campaign has been organised for years with lots of creative activities and en-thusiasm to bring positive changes in the environment.

“The campaign aims to en-sure that health facilities comply with all relevant legislations so to provide clean and safe environment to both employees and patients,” said Thabiso Motlhamme, Man-ager for Environmental Health programme in the district.

During her speech Mary Madaure, the Deputy Director for Environmental Health in Gauteng Province explained the benefits of hand washing and hygiene and its negative impact should it not be practiced proper.

“Proper hand washing and hygiene at critical times might reduce infant and child mortality. Inadequate wash is a root cause of diarrhea and other infectious diseas-es.

Diarrhoea is a common disease in South Africa, particularly in children under 5 years and estimated by World Health Organisation in 2012 to cause 842 000 deaths every year.

development sports event, the first of its kind in the inner city of Johannesburg Legae La Rona area, kicked off on Saturday 9 September at JZ de Villiers Park. The event was to boost and encourage sports development among the youth of the area, coupled with an awareness campaign to promote a clean and safe environment.

The organising committee included City of Joburg, Jozi Housing, Stay City, Trafalgar, Ithemba, and management from the Legae La Rona, City Improvement District. Saturday’s event was opened by City of Joburg’s Councillor Matsemela Madisha who addressed the more than 100 enthusiastic children from the community who participated.

After an aerobics demonstration and coaching session the soccer tournament started. The children were teamed according to their residential houses in the Legae La Rona area: Jozi, Trafalgar and Ithemba and the Barnato School kids made up the fourth team.

Jozi Housing emerged as the winning team, receiving a team floating trophy and a medal for each of the players. Following up was Trafalgar. The Trafalgar girls won the netball, with Barnato a close second.

the area the organisers ran a competition for participants to highlight the awareness campaign motto “Be proud of our space and keep our environment clean”. In this vein, participants were asked to clean up before the winners were announced and prizes were presented.

Prizes were also awarded for a competition for the youth who handed in pictures they’d drawn on the theme. Here, too, Jozi Housing came out on top.

The sports day was preceded by a sports development networking event on the previous day at Stay City attended by several high profile sports people. The aim was to spread awareness of the need to attract inner city youth into sport and among the guests was Olympic silver medallist Hezekiel Sepeng who thrilled the guests by his presence.
