he Yeoville Library will host an entrepreneurial workshop on May 28, in which attendance will be free.

Senior librarian at the library in Rockey Street, Johannes Masenya said the workshop will fo-

cus on how to go about starting a business venture.

“There will be a particular focus on issues of compliance with the South African Revenue Service (SARS) legislative framework, funding from the Gauteng Enterprise Propeller (GEP) for businesses and how to go about writing a tender concerned with the

building sector or construction industry,” he added.

Masenya said the workshop is open to members of the public and residents will get to know the procedures involved when lodging a tender in the City of Johannesburg.

“Most people already have businesses that are up and running.

A good understanding of how things work will go a long way in ensuring their businesses flourish,” he said.

ast Saturday about 100 members of the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Pathfinder club marched in Johannesburg CBD to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse.

The SDA church’s members decided to take action about the drug abuse around the country. They marched from their church in Claim Street and stopped at the Joubert Park. They handed out

pamphlets and CDs that carry messages about the dangers of substance abuse, and explaining why people need to stop using them.

A church spokesperson Amanda Hati said that was a reinforcement campaign because many people are already aware of the drugs issue.

“Drug abuse is a serious issue that affects the South African community as a whole and it was impressive to see the members of the SDA church doing something about such issues,” she said.

he Tower Bureau De Change foreign currency services group conducted a campaign to expose their services in Hillbrow last Saturday.

The company provides foreign currency services, according to its marketing agent Zanele Mlotshwa.

During the campaign they focused on the Zimbabwean community and other people who send money outside South Africa. They handed out pamphlets and explained how their services work. Mlotshwa said they have opened a new branch at the Highpoint mall.

“We want to cut down the need for them to bring documents whenever they transact, we want them to register so they get the client information card. Because of our brand name some people think our fees are high, yet they are affordable that those of our competitors,” she added.

R6m gold smuggling bust Polokwane - A Zimbabwean couple has been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle gold bricks worth over R6 million into South Africa through the Beit Bridge border post near Musina, according to Limpopo police.

In a statement police spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said a dog handler from the SA Revenue Services was doing his routine inspection when he spotted a suspicious looking black Audi sedan motor vehicle which had a Zimbabwean registration number.

“Upon searching the vehicle officials found six bricks of gold inside the arm rest compartment of the car’s passenger seat. The man, aged 39, and his wife, 37, were subsequently arrested at the border post, near Musina in Limpopo.”

The have been detained as they face charges of unlawful possession of precious metals. Police are also investigating whether they could be linked to similar cases, Brigadier Mulaudzi said.

Minister condemns killings Rustenburg - Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa has condemned the killing of three miners in the platinum belt in the past few days.

Two mineworkers were killed at the weekend and another one on Monday. “The protection of those involved in the labour disputes is a matter that government takes extremely seriously,” Miinister Mthethwa said.

Workers affiliated to Amcu have been on strike since 23 January demanding a salary of R12 500 a month. Fears of friction between striking miners and those wishing to resume work arose when Amcu objected to employers approaching miners with their wage offer directly, in a bid to end the strike. Impala Platinum, Anglo American Platinum, and Lonmin have called on Amcu to exercise responsible leadership. “Our employees wish to return to work, but have expressed a fear of intimidation and violence,” they said.

NUM regional secretary Sydwell Dolokwana blamed Amcu and employers for the three deaths.

“They intimidated our members who wanted to go to work on Monday. The employer urged workers to report for duty but could not ensure their safety,” Dolokwana said.

Cope slams ANC ‘spies’ Mbombela - The Congress of the People (Cope) has blamed the ANC for its poor performance in the recent elections.

The party lost three of its four seats in the provincial legislature. Cope provincial chairperson Patrick Sikhutshi said ANC agents infiltrated its ranks prior to the polls. “The ANC deployed its people in our ranks to destabilise our party, and they returned to their master after sowing seeds of destruction. However, we will go out to rebuild in order to contest the local government elections,” he said.

The ANC won 39 seats, the EFF six and the DA three. A few weeks before the polls Cope’s Mokgadi Raganya, youth chairperson Abel Rangata, student leader Katlego Kabe and other members joined the ANC. Sikhutshi said they were ‘infiltrators’ and had returned to their master.

The ANC has however denied sending spies to other organisations to destabilise them.

Cape Town - At least Varsity blaze eight rooms have been destroyed by a fire that broke out in a female student residence of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in Cape Town (CPUT).

At least 20 students were inside the residence when the blaze started in the Green Oaks building. One person has been admitted to hospital for smoke inhalation and a fire-fighter was injured. After a long battle firefighters managed to contain the fire.

City Disaster Management spokesperson Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said that the building housed

Arrangements are being made for alternative accommodation for the students. “There was an immediate plan to reaccommodate the students at one of the other premises of the university, close by the campus,” said residence manager Willem Lotter.

Durban - Following a recent accident in which schoolchildren died Transport Minister Dipuo Peters has called for tighter control of school transport. “Tighter control, especially at licensing of scholar transport and inspectorate levels, must be considered,” she said.

A bakkie carrying schoolchildren crashed into a dam in the Midlands on Monday morning.

Police and rescue personnel retrieved at least four bodies and rescued 25 other children.

The driver of the vehicle has been charged with murder and negligent driving. “Culprits will answer to our courts and, if so required, recommendation for stiffest sentences possible will be made,” she said.

Transport and Safety MEC Willies Mchunu expressed concern at the use of bakkies to transport passengers, including school pupils.

He called on law enforcement services to be extra vigilant and ensure accidents involving bakkies were prevented. “I’m concerned about the use of bakkies to transport members of the public, especially school learners. We strongly urge parents to work with us to ensure that learners are safe on the road,” he said.

idvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt has labelled his side as underdogs going into the Nedbank Cup final against Orlando Pirates on Saturday. Hunt will be contesting his third Nedbank Cup Final in a row after reaching it twice with SuperSport United and now with Wits.

Despite having been in those three previous finals, he believes that Pirates, who have reached three cup finals this season will be favourites to win the cup. “We are huge underdogs, I mean they are much bigger favourites playing in the final as they have played three this season,” Hunt says.

“They’ve got a very experienced squad compared to us with a lot of youngsters

playing. So their squad is more experienced than ours in terms of getting to the finals. They’ll have 99.9 percent of the support, they have everything they want and it’s going to be tough for us.”

Hunt feels that Pirates will be double motivated after they already lost three previous finals. Hunt has played down any talk of Pirates players being psychologically affected by failed attempts on three previous occasions.

“I don’t think there is any psychological effect from those failures; I think it will make them more determined if anything.

So I don’t think there will be any psychological effect on this final I mean it’s the last throw of the dice, they have been unfortunate in the other three,” Hunt added.

Bucs seek to appease their restless ghost after so many disappointments this season.
