T

he City of Johannesburg’s Executive Mayor, Cllr Herman Mashaba, together with community leaders and various stakeholders, launched a monthly cleanup volunteer campaign at the Yeoville Recreation Centre, to encourage the reduction of grime and litter within Johannesburg.

The #AreSebetseng campaign seeks to unite residents within the City to work together with government and skilled stakeholders in ensuring that Johannesburg becomes clean.

The City has thus far succesfully improved service delivery within Pikitup — the City’s entity which provides cleaning services.

The largest component of this campaign will focus on cleaning the City, to position it as a job-creating investment and a City which brings pride to its residents, thus becoming a home to many.

The campaign will also strive to encourage residents to take better care of the environment by promoting a culture of reducing, re-using and recycling waste. Ensuring that Johannesburg becomes one of the cleanest cities in Africa. The project will also enhance the City’s R50 million investment into Pikitup for a third cleaning shift within the city. “We look forward to seeing residents taking ownership of their City and supporting A Re Sebetseng to clean our environment.” Mashaba said.

On the 30th of September 2017, the City will have its first city-wide clean-

up supported by councillors and ward committees as well as businesses across the city. Plastic bags and gloves will be distributed at walk-in centres, clinics, libraries, including participating businesses. Bags will then be collected on the same day to ensure that the city is cleaner. “We cannot solely rely on the

services of Pikitup to keep our City clean. We all have a responsibility to keep our environment clean and to respect the rule of law,” Mashaba added.

A Re Sebetseng emulates Rwanda’s own cleanup campaign - Umaganda, which is a monthly campaign where all residents come together to clean their

City. Through the campaign, the City of Kigali is now known as the cleanest in Africa.

“We are looking forward to seeing residents come out in their numbers, taking ownership of their City and supporting this campaign to clean our environment,” concludes Mashaba.

Damons goes on to describe how the system, known as MaaS (Mentoring as a Service) has increased not only student success rates but also the ability to monitor students individually and to effectively assist them. “Keeping students in the system, keeping them active and engaged, and helping them to persevere is our ultimate goal.

So how does Boston achieve this?

The Boston Higher Education Department has devised an intricate system that operates in conjunction with the Maas AI (artificial intelligence system). What does this mean for a student? It means that you have access to assistance with your coursework.

You can get your queries answered by your assigned Lecturer, either in person, via email, telephonically or via skype. You only progress in your coursework as you master the work that has been done. Students can get topics explained and reexplained until you are satisfied. “The Maas system does only rely on students to approach their Lecturers when they need them”, says Damons.

“It is a proactive system, which means that we actively monitor every student. ” Lecturers will get an alert if an assignment has not been opened or completed prior to a scheduled due date. Additional mechanisms have been built in to the system, including sms and e-mail alerts that are followed up telephonically. This system is very distinctive in its ability to predict student performance and in its ability to proactively intervene to optimise a student’s success.

“Using a system that is consistently monitoring students on an individual basis means that a student is getting individual attention at all times!” says Damons. “Not only does it keep students engaged, it keeps Lecturers continually informed.

It’s a win-win for the whole campus”. Damons explains that using the MaaS system enables the campus to build a culture of positive evidence.

“Essentially we will have a reliable data file on each student”, she says.

“We are then able to counsel the student appropriately as to how to continue with their studies, as well as to motivate them”.

The system uses a built in communication and instant messaging tools to create a supportive mentoring environment. In this current economic and educational environment, students and parents paying fees need to know that they will receive assistance, individual attention and support in their academic endeavours to ensure their success.

Plus 94 Research acquires

n its 20th year of operation, Plus 94 Research is making strides in business expansion and merging conventional market research solutions with innovative electronic communications Plus 94 Research, South Africa’s leading black-owned market research company, announced the acquisition of a 26% shareholding in Registered Communication, an electronic communications services company that provides registered electronic notifications, SMS, e-Contracting and the development of applications to replace traditional forms of communication with innovative marketing of intuitive electronic communications. Its vision is to replace traditional (registered) post with digital options. The deal is valued at approximately R5.7 million.

Registered Communication was established in 2015 in partnership with international telecommunications operator Lleida.net.

She explained that the work that Plus 94 does is well aligned with Registered Communication’s services, and this relationship will enhance Plus 94’s dynamic offering.

“It is all about relevance, integrity and speed of the data” According to the CEO of Registered Communication, Norman Colling, “Such partnerships are necessary to drive industry growth. The opportunity to partner with Plus 94 has come at an ideal

time, from an industry transformation and innovation perspective.”

Giving background on Plus 94, co-founder and CEO Sifiso Falala noted, “Plus 94 is the first research company to have launched an App, and the first market research company to do backward integration by purchasing a stake in a company that will give the company access to every segment of the market in South Africa using online methods, mobile technology, face to face methodologies.”

He explained that when Plus 94 was exploring market options, the team looked at

City opens new JMPD Satellite Station in Kenilworth

THE Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Herman Mashaba and MMC for Public Safety, Cllr Mi-

chael Sun opened the new JMPD Satellite Station in Kenilworth on 259 Bertha Street.

This timely intervention follows the urgent need to rid communities of Kenilworth, Rosettenville and Turffontein

of all criminal activities like drugs, human trafficking and other gang-related incidents.

The new Satellite Station was donated by The Southern Business Community Forum.
