Ecofriendly vehicles for Joburg ‘We hope to achieve our goal of making walking, cycling and public transport as our modes of choice by 2040’ Johannesburg - The City of Joburg says it will spend R216-million on replacing half of its 3 500 vehicle fleet with energy-saving and environmentally friendly vehicles. Mayor Parks Tau and Group Corporate and Shared Services MMC Mally Mokoena took delivery of the first batch of 10 hybrid pool cars in the City’s Fleet Greening Programme. Mayor Tau said 34 vehicles valued at over R8 million will be delivered in the next few weeks to be used by the city’s various entities. The vehicles, supplied and managed by Avis, were unveiled at the Metro Centre in Braamfontein as part of Mayor Tau’s vision to reduce the carbon footprint in the city. “Johannesburg contributes 56 percent to national carbon emissions and is regarded as the world’s 13th highest carbon-emitting city. Transport has the highest demand for energy at 67%, with private car use making up a large percentage. We hope to achieve our goal of making walking, cycling and public transport as our modes of choice by 2040. The non-motorised transport system will address greenhouse gas emission problems, which are a major contributor to climate change and also a factor in our health problems,” Mayor Tau said.
He explained that the Fleet Greening Programme is one of the city’s initiatives to promote the use of clean energy in transport and other sectors. “This approach is an effort to assist to mitigate the negative effects of climate change and provide basic services to our clients. Climate change is a serious threat to humanity as it has brought about environmental hazards, high temperatures, devastating storms and hurricanes, rising sea levels, diseases and flooding,” he said. The project fits into the City’s other green transport and economy projects, and Metrobus, Rea Vaya are already running similar projects, he added. “With the green transportation strategy and the development of the lowcarbon value chain embedded within the various programmes, we hope to meet the objectives of our Growth and Development Strategy 2040 by improving air quality in Johannesburg. This would result in new industries and jobs,” he said. Avis Fleet Services CEO Clive Else said by taking concrete steps to mitigate climate change, Joburg is serious about preserving the environment for future generations. “The City’s programme is in line with international standards and 52% of fleets in some European countries are hybrid.”

Youth jobs project takes off ‘The programme will look at work placements and tackle other entry barriers’
Harambee’s head of marketing Bryony Maxwell
Johannesburg - The Vulindlel’ eJozi, a City of Joburg initiative aimed at providing employment opportunities for youths has taken off, with an average of 400 young people registering for the programme online each day, according to Bryony Maxwell, Head of Marketing at Harambee, a private-sector organisation that partners with the City on the programme. Maxwell said she had expected the registration numbers to be much higher than they were. “But it’s still early yet, we expect the numbers to increase steadily as word gets round about the youth employment programme,” she says. She has encouraged the youth to self-reg-
ister on the http://vulindlelejozi.mobi site. Those without internet access have been encouraged to register at the City’s regional community centres or to access the mobi site from City libraries and free City WiFi hotspots. Harambee field workers will also undertake several registration drives in informal and under-serviced areas. Vulindlel’ eJozi was launched on June 1 by Mayor Parks Tau. He said the programme would enable the current generation of youth to shape a future society. “We are a city where the young lead the call for transformation, demanding the opportunity to work, to improve their lives and become the best they can be. Ours is a city that
knows that, with a little help, our youth are not the challenge some think they are but our greatest asset,” he said. With more than 800 000 unemployed youths in Joburg, the Mayor said the success of Vulindlel’ eJozi would be linked to the determination of the youths involved. The programme will not only look at work placements for registered youth but also at tackling other entry barriers such as work readiness and foundation numeracy, literacy and digital literacy levels by providing training, Mayor Tau said. Through the programme youths will also be able to access learnerships and apprenticeship opportunities to improve their permanent employment eligibility and raise earning potential. Self-registered youths will be contacted by Harambee and will undergo screening, assessments and advisory services. The youth programme will then identify and create opportunities for young people based on their aptitudes and capabilities. The programme will also facilitate the placement of appropriate candidates in training and education programmes.
Death trap...Smoke billows from the flat in which two children were killed on Monday.
Toddlers killed in creche fire Joubert Park - Two toddlers were killed after a flat at a building in Koch and Quartz streets caught fire on Monday afternoon. It is unclear what caused the blaze but firefighters were able to extinguish it. Jonathan van Wyk of EmergiMed said: “We found a second floor flat on fire. It turned out it was a crèche and two children were declared deceased at the scene.” Dozens of onlookers stood in shock after the fire broke out, while one of the deceased children’s mother crouched on the tarred road with a blanket over her head sobbing uncontrollably. Firefighters battled with the blaze for about three hours and managed to save the lives of the other children and their teachers. Nobody knows exactly what caused the fire but when residents rushed into the smoke-filled flat they could not see the girls; it is believed they had hidden under a bed. Seven of their classmates were shepherded to safety, as the fire spread in the second-storey flat. It was only once firemen had extinguished the blaze that the girls were carried out of the building; they had apparently died of smoke inhalation. Five children, all under the age of 5, had been at the centre when the fire started. Robert Mulaudzi, a spokesman for the City of Johannesburg emergency services, said the flat was being used as a crèche. “The cause of the fire is to be investigated,” he added. A woman identified as the owner of the crèche had been taken to hospital after she had fainted.

Joburg Mayor Parks Tau cuddles up in Gen Lane during the CEO SleepOut initiative.

J
oburg Mayor Parks Tau was one of 250 South African decision-makers who took part in the inaugural 702-Sun International CEO SleepOut initiative in Sandton last Thursday, to highlight the plight of the homeless and raise funds for a charity for destitute children. Mayor Tau picked a spot near a park bench on Gwen Lane in the Sandton CBD as his home for the night. “They have given me a blanket, the MMC for Health and Social Development is also here, along with a lot of others from the Social Development Cluster and from my office,” he said. Shrugging the biting cold, some of Johannesburg’s businesspeople and politicians found themselves hunched over fires as the chilly night wore on, chatting among themselves. PJ Powers brought a little warmth and cheer when she treated them to an impromptu music concert until midnight. The campaign, which started in Australia 10 years ago, raised at least R25 million for the Girls and Boys’ Town organisation on its debut in South Africa. Each participant forked out at least R100 000 to spend the night under the stars. “When the City
of Johannesburg was first approached to host this event, I immediately welcomed the initiative as an extremely worthwhile contribution by the private sector worthy of support and very important for South Africa,” said Mayor Tau. Such partnerships, he said, were crucial given the sobering reality that at least 6 000 destitute people live under trying conditions on the streets every night, while 140 000 families are faced with inadequate living conditions in informal settlements. “It was quite impressive to see 250 decision-makers gathered in one spot discussing ways to contribute to the fight against homelessness,” he said. Gauteng Premier David Makhura also took part in the SleepOut. “This initiative is all about giving hope to young people and lifting them out of hopelessness. Tonight is about realising that we can always help to make life better for the next person.” LeadSA goodwill ambassador Yusuf Abramjee said the CEO SleepOver was not a competition but an initiative for a good cause. Some of the organisations and companies whose CEOs took part include BMW South Africa, IQ Business, Ford South Africa, CNBC Africa, MBS Mpowered, Nedbank, Proudly South African, KFC, Europcar, Vodacom, Virgin Atlantic and Stuttafords Van Lines.

Turffontein development project under way Johannesburg - The City of Joburg will spend more than R150-million over the next four years on developing the Rotunda Park Precinct in Turffontein, south-east of Johannesburg, with the R12.8-million first phase now under way. Joburg’s Development Planning MMC Roslyn Greeff said the Rotunda Park Precinct is a priority project that will be undertaken in three phases. “Work on the R12.8-million first phase has started, expected to be completed by November.” She added that this is a public envi-
ronmental upgrade. “The contractor has been appointed and the team is now on site.” The third phase of the Rotunda Park Precinct development, scheduled to start in 2017-18, will involve the extension of the De Villiers Parkway/ Linear Park towards various landmarks. Turffontein, one of the oldest residential areas in Joburg, has been in gradual decline over the years. MMC Greeff says the redevelopment will attract new investors, especially in the housing sector. “We want the private sector to come on
board and develop affordable housing. We want them to build upwards, buildings that will accommodate more people. We want to see more people move into this area.” The programme, which is being implementing in line with the City’s Growth and Development Strategy 2040 (GDS 2040), envisages a future Johannesburg shaped by well-planned transport arteries that link interchanges characterised by mixed-use development. Parks and green spaces will form an integral part of these developments.
The Turffontein Corridor will cater for Turffontein and surrounding suburbs such as Kenilworth and Rosettenville. Plans have already been approved for a R2-billion mixed-use housing development project in the South Hills area. The Turffontein Corridor is one of three priority corridors for which Strategic Area Frameworks have been approved, the other two being the Empire-Perth corridor between Soweto and the CBD, and the Louis Botha-Katherine corridor between the CBD, Alexandra and Sandton.

radiator grille with a horizontal chequered pattern and gloss-black finishing. Below the bumper, two front spoilers boost aerodynamic performance. The redesigned door sills hint at the car’s aggressive nature, while the new rear design features a gloss-black section housing the twin exhaust pipes. Finally, a wider track has been employed front and back in order to offer more grip and cornering prowess. Red stitching is used on the upholstery, door panels, gear lever and
floor mats. The door-sill carries the GTi and Peugeot Sport logos and is finished in aluminium. The same material is used on the pedals, foot rest and gear knob. If you opt for the top spec 308 GTi, the bucket seats are upholstered in Alcantara with GTi signatures stitched into them. The 308 GTi is equipped with the Driver Sport Pack. Pressing the Sport button on the centre console changes the display from white to red, shows additional information on the central read-out (power, torque, boost, lateral and longitudinal acceleration), enhances the engine’s throaty growl and changes accelerator pedal mapping for a more engaging driving experience. A 1.6-Litre turbo with two separate outputs will be available for the 308 GTi. The introductory model is equipped with 182 kW and 330 Nm of torque. That’s good enough to get it to 100kph in 6.2 seconds. If you want more from the 308 GTi then Peugeot does also offer it with 200 kW and the same 330 Nm of torque. It sprints to 100kph a bit quicker than the intro model making the 100kph sprint in 6.0 seconds. Both cars have to be electronically restrained at 250kph. The entire vertical suspension system in the front is specific to the new 308 GTi, and including bespoke spring stiffness and shock absorber calibration. The anti-roll bar is more malleable to ensure a better match with the rear axle and enhances grip while cornering while also increasing road holding. Exclusive to the top-spec GTi 270 is a limited-slip differential, incorporated into the transmission to improve cornering traction. Peugeot South Africa is unable to say if the 308 GTi will come to South Africa, but says if it is feasible that we will likely see it launch in the third quarter of 2016.

The BRT system has hiked fares for the first time.
ReaVaya hikes fares Staff Reporter news@inner-city-gazette.co.za
I
n the first price hike since the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system was introduced in Johannesburg in 2009, Rea Vaya fares will increase by 6% on July 1, Joburg Transport MMC Christine Walters has announced. She says despite the increase, which ranges from 30 cents to 80 cents, Rea Vaya is still the most affordable, safe and accessible mode of public transport in the city. “It remains Rea Vaya’s priority to ensure accessible, safe and affordable public transport to enable our people to access economic opportunities and amenities,” she says. The City’s Transport Department Director of Marketing and Communications Benny Makgoga says passengers travelling from zero to 5km during peak hour pay R5.50 a ticket at present. But from July 1, they will pay R5.80. “However, for passengers travelling during off-peak hours, a bus trip within the same distance will cost them R5.22 from July 1, 10% lower than the new fare.” Makgoga says the fare hike is a result of an increase in direct bus operating expenses such as fuel, vehicle maintenance and tyre replacement costs; drivers’ wages; salaries of other staff; and other overheads. “A price increase is normal for any business operation. But with our 10% off plan during off peak times, travelling on Rea Vaya has become even more affordable,” says Makgoga.
Rea Vaya has also introduced user friendly transfers to enable passengers to travel simpler and more conveniently to their destination. Passengers transferring from one Rea Vaya bus to another to connect to their destination will not pay more from 1 July,” Makgoga says. Passengers can now transfer from one bus to another to connect to their destination within 15 minutes at Indingilizi, Joburg Theatre, Carlton Centre, University of JohannesburgSophiatown, Library Gardens and Chancellor House. “Make sure you spend less than 15 minutes at the transfer station to connect. If you spend more than 15 minutes in the transfer station, the system will recognise it as your destination and you will be charged for it,” says Makgoga. Rea Vaya smart cards will be available from 1 July for R20 at University of Johannesburg-Kingsway, Johannesburg Park Station, Johannesburg Art Gallery and Carlton Centre, Orlando Stadium and Diepkloof. “The City issued smart cards for free to passengers from 1 July 2013 to 30 June 2015. The City will still subsidise the actual cost of the card,” Makgoga says. A loading fee of R1.50 is applicable if you top up your smart card with less than R60. You must have a minimum of R13.30 on your smart card to be able to travel. For more information get to the nearest Rea Vaya station or visit the website www.reavaya.org.za .

oburg Central police arrested a 30 year-old male for attempted car hijacking at corner Bree and Mooi streets on Friday, says Communications Officer Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele. He explains that four suspects allegedly tried to hijack a green Toyota Corolla of a 42 year-old female. “The victim was stationery at the red robot at corner Bree and Mooi streets. Her window was half opened; she saw a male trying to grab her car keys, then another suspect opened her car doors and threatened her sister- in-law with a knife. She screamed for help while the suspects grabbing her handbag and two cellphones before they fled the scene. Inside her handbag was a wallet with R250.” He adds that police on routine crime prevention arrested the suspect who was trying to grab her car keys. “Police investigation is continuing and three suspects are still at large with the vic-
tim’s belongings,” W/O Mbele adds. Warrant Officer Mbele adds that a police also arrested a 26 year-old male for possession of a stolen motor vehicle at corner Henry Nxumalo and Commissioner streets. “Police on routine crime prevention saw a blue Toyota Conquest vehicle which was being driven without registration numbers. They stop it; when they inspected it they found that the engine number and the VIN number had been tampered with. Further investigation revealed that a vehicle was reported stolen at Vanderbijl in March.” Warrant Officer Mbele adds that police arrested a 30- year-old suspect for theft out of a motor vehicle and malicious damage to property at corner Kerk and Polly streets on Sunday. “It is alleged that the suspect stole a spare tyre tube inside a white Hyundai four ton truck. The driver parked his vehicle and left; when he returned he found a passenger door window broken. Police apprehended a suspect and recovered his spare tyre tube,” he adds.

Hundreds evicted from CBD building
Johannesburg - Hundreds of people were evicted from a building at corner of Plein and Quartz streets in the Joburg CBD on Monday. It is believed that an eviction order was granted by Judge Mokgoatlheng of the Joburg High Court. An official involved in the eviction said they had been struggling to regain control
of the building for three years. “We have followed all the correct steps in order to do this. Our plan is to renovate the building and develop low cost housing apartments that are run properly, safe and in line municipal regulations. We found blankets that were placed over heaters and there were illegal electricity connections
that are extremely dangerous.” Police said following the eviction a woman was shot and wounded by a disgruntled evictee. Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele of Joburg Central police said: “A woman was shot by one of the evicted people, who was arrested. She is currently in a stable condition and recovering in hospital.”

Diplomat to mediate political crisis Bujumbura, Burundi - The UN has appointed a Senegalese diplomat to facilitate talks between rival factions in the country’s political crisis after the opposition accused the previous mediator of bias. The country was plunged into turmoil in late April after President Pierre Nkurunziza said he would seek a third term. Opposition protesters took to the streets for weeks, saying the move violates the constitution and a peace deal that ended an ethnically charged civil war in 2005. The UN said Abdoulaye Bathily, who is already the UN’s Special Representative for Central Africa, would help mediate talks. “The secretary general has requested Bathily to offer good offices in Burundi in support of regional efforts to reduce tensions
and help Burundians peacefully settle their differences,” the UN said in a statement. The previous UN mediator, Said Djinnit, left the role after only a few weeks having faced criticism from the opposition that he was biased towards the government, a charge he dismissed. Djinnit however remains UN special envoy to the African Great Lakes region. A series of elections have been delayed by weeks of unrest and violent clashes between police and protesters, alarming a region which has a history of ethnic killing. Government spokesman Philippe Nzobonariba welcomed Bathily’s appointment but warned Bujumbura would not budge on the timings of parliamentary and presidential elections, due on June 29 and July 15.

Al-Qaeda refutes jihadist leader’s death
Algiers, Algeria - Al Qaeda has denied that Algerian militant Mokhtar Belmokhtar, a major figure in insurgencies across North Africa and the Saharan border region, was killed in a US air strike in Libya. The SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors radical Islamist organizations in the media, cited a statement from al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) posted on Twitter declaring that Belmokhtar, also known as Khalid Abu al-Abbas, is alive. “Mujahid commander Khalid Abu al-Abbas is still alive and well, and he roams the land of Allah vexing his enemies,” said the statement. Libya’s government said on June 15 that the militant blamed for a deadly attack
on an Algerian gas field had been killed. Belmokhtar also ran smuggling routes across North Africa. Libya’s internationally recognized government in Bayda said the US strike had killed Belmokhtar at a gathering with other militant leaders. Belmokhtar, blamed for the 2013 attack on Algeria’s In Amenas gas field in which 40 oil workers died, and for several foreign kidnappings, has been reported killed several times, including in 2013 when he was believed to have died in fighting in Mali. Once associated with AQIM’s Algerian leadership, Belmokhtar broke off but remained tied to al Qaeda’s central leadership even after forming his own group. AFP

Bamako, Mali - Tuareg-led rebels and the government have signed a peace deal meant to allow the authorities to focus on tackling Islamist militants in the desert north. The Algerian-brokered deal, signed by the rebel Coordination of Movements of Azawad (CMA), grants greater autonomy to northern Mali in a bid to end a cycle of four uprisings since independence from France in 1960. The Algiers Accord had been signed in May by a coalition of loyalist armed groups but the CMA held out for concessions on the return of refugees, security arrangements and development plans for the region. “Hand in hand, let us make Mali better, more brotherly, more united than ever,” President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita told the ceremony. CMA representative Mahamadou Djeri Maiga said: “We are placing a lot of hope in the assurances of the president and our international partners.” Authorities said Algeria would head an independent commission in monitoring the deal. Women protest against detentions Cairo, Egypt - Dozens of women held a vigil on Sunday outside the presidential palace, challenging a law that restricts protests and calling for the release of thousands of prisoners detained for violating the controversial measure. Organisers said they did not seek prior permission from authorities to stage the vigil near the palace of President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi. Police formed a cordon around the women, who raised photos of detainees. Some protesters raised banners that read: “Ramadan is not the same without you”, in reference to the Muslim holy month of fasting that brings families together. The protest law, in place since 2013, criminalises any gathering of over five people without prior police permission and imposes hefty fines and prison sentences on violators. Authorities say the law is necessary to end the chaos that plagued Egypt since its 2011 revolt. Activists say the law is used to muzzle critics. Thousands of people have been detained over the law, with some sentenced to as many as 15 years for protesting and allegedly using violence. Prominent women rights defender Yara Sallam and activist Sanaa Seif, who hails from a well-known family of rights defenders, were arrested a year ago outside the palace for opposing the law and are serving two-year sentences with 21 other activists. There were no reported arrests. AP

Xulu has thanked the reigning Absa Premiership champions for showing belief in his ability. The 23-year-old was unveiled to the media at Naturena on Tuesday morning, along with fellow recruits Bongani Ndulula, Camaldine Abraw, Daniel Cardoso and Keegan Ritchie. The 23-year-old had been touted as an ideal replacement since Tefu Mashamaite’s decision to leave. Amakhosi chairman Kaizer Motaung said Sundowns stole Xulu from them. “We still have his youth contract. He is a comeback kid. He is one of the players we lost through former coaches. He was in our development structure. When we felt he was ready to be promoted to the first team, Muhsin Ertugral said he was too skinny.” Motaung also said Mulomowandau Mathoho will not be leaving and that Chiefs’ transfer bids for Sibusiso Vilakazi and Cole Alexander were rejected by Bidvest Wits and Polok-

2014/15 season on loan at Chippa United from Pirates. Having finished his season-long loan with Chippa, Moholo is expected to return to Pirates or join another club for the 2015/16 season, depending on a decision by his employers. Zola Doda reports that Tefu Mashamaite’s move to Sundowns is almost done. The 2014/15 PSL Footballer of the Season, Player’s Player of the Season left Naturena earlier this month after his contract ended. It has been an open secret that Sundowns want the 31-year-old to replace Alje Schut, who returned to Netherlands after three years at Chloorkop. When he was contacted for comment, Mashamaite’s agent Jazzman Mahlakgane declined. “There is nothing for me to say from my side, that is all I can say,” Mahlakgane said.
Second chance for SA athlete Athletics Correspondent
T
he good news for South African athletics is that after an absence of three years, mainly because he was caught using ‘tik’ (methamphetamine), Luvo Manyonga is back. He is training at Tuks Athletics and is based at the High Performance Centre (HPC). Manyonga promised himself that he will make the most of this second chance. “I owe it to myself and the people who never lost faith in me or my abilities to redeem myself.” At the end of 2011 Manyonga was considered to be the next real deal in South African athletics. At a meeting in Jamsa, Finland he jumped 8.26 metres. This made him SA’s second best long jumper of all time at that stage. Manyonga’s rise to ‘athletics stardom’ began in 2010 when he won the world title at the Junior Championships in Moncton, Canada, with a jump of 8.19 metres. This is still the African and South African Junior record. In 2012, at the South African Championships, his career suddenly spiralled out of control when an announcement was made that he had tested positive for ‘tik’ and was banned for two years. To make matters worse his long-time coach, Mario Smit, died in a car accident in 2014, just at the time when Manyonga was making his comeback. When asked if he had any advice for youngsters who consider experimenting with ‘TIK’, Manyonga’s advice was: “Don’t do it! It is not worth it. I can tell them that once you start using it you become powerless. You may tell yourself that you are still in control and can stop using it whenever you want to, but it will be lie. ‘TIK’ is a mentally manipulative drug which will take over your whole life. “While you are on a high you feel absolutely wonderful and are able to make the most fantastic plans. You feel as if you can conquer the world, but unfortunately the feeling does not last. I have done things of which I am truly ashamed just to get money to buy the drug. You lose all perception of what is right or wrong. All that matters is to get your fix. It was important to get out of the Western Cape where the drug dealers know me and will provide me with drugs even if I don’t have any money.” supersport.com
