Joburg embarks on city clean-up campaign ‘Play your part in making the City of Johannesburg sparkle - A Re Sebetseng’ Staff Reporter news@inner-city-gazette.co.za
L
itterbugs in the City of Johannesburg have been warned: Joburg is unleashing an army of anti-litter volunteers to keep the City clean through the monthly A Re Sebetseng programme. “We challenge you to commit the fourth Saturday of every month to cleaning the streets of our communities, starting this coming Saturday on 30 September,” urges Cllr Nonhlanhla Sifumba, the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development. “In our little corners, let’s make Johannesburg work,” says MMC Sifumba. Although the responsibility of cleaning and disposing on waste is the mandate of Pikitup, the waste management company of the City of Joburg, it is impossible for the entity with a staff complement of over 4 000 employees to ensure that the 1 645 square metres of Johannesburg, which has 135 wards, is kept spotlessly clean. That is why the City has enlisted the help of residents to participate in monthly clean-up campaigns and to refrain from littering and illegally dumping waste. Residents can report

illegal dumping on 0860 562 874/ 011 375 5555 or at info@pikitup.co.za. Illegal dumping and littering cost the City millions of
rands, money that can be used to fund other employmentcreating projects as opposed to wasting money on avoidable expenses. The City of Joburg’s A Re Sebetseng pro-
gramme is modelled along a similar initiative in Rwanda’s capital Kigali, which was honoured by the United Nations in 2008 for its cleanliness levels. On the last Saturday of the month, everyone in Rwanda sets aside their personal engagements to carry out a communal cleaning service. No one between the ages of 18 to 65 years old is spared and through such massive clean-up monthly clean up campaigns Rwanda was able to achieve its spectacular cleanliness levels and also sustain its cleanliness levels to date. The City of Johannesburg through the A Re Sebetseng clean-up campaign calls on all residents, including business, non-profit organisations and community organisations to dedicate their time on the last Saturday of each month to clean their neighbourhoods. Play your part in making the City of Johannesburg sparkle. You can pick up bags and gloves on Thursday 28 September or Friday 29 September 2017 at your nearest Pikitup depot, City library, City clinic or walk-in centres. If you want your area to become part of the A Re Sebetseng clean-up blitz, please call 087 357 1126 or email aresebetseng@pikitup.co.za to arrange for full waste bags to be collected.

Take your passion to the next level
“T
oday, more and more people study further to create an opportunity that will enhance their future. We all have something that we are passionate about, for some it’s our careers, for others it’s a non-career interest, maybe a hobby, a sport or even a part-time home-based business. The point is, further study can turn one’s passion into something more fulfilling – it may even turn one’s passion into a full time business,” says Natalie Rabson, Marketing Manager at Boston City Campus & Business College. Magazine articles praise home businesses of people who have left the corporate world due to retrenchment or a dissatisfaction with their working life, and started up home industries in cosmetics, IT and food production. These people now live fulfilling lives running successful businesses and living their dreams. “Today institutions and learners are adapting their concepts of what a career is to include what was previously thought of as a hobby or an individual skill,” says Rabson. It also doesn’t matter where one’s passion lies, the real question is: do you aspire to become a manager and leader in your specific field of interest?
‘FURTHER STUDY can turn one’s passion into something more fulfilling – it may even turn one’s passion into a full time business’

in our hospitable country. “It helped South Africans to think on a bigger scale. That which was previously thought of as a family business, whether a guesthouse or a home-based baking or catering operation – all of a sudden showed great opportunities for sales, marketing, expansion, as well as many other avenues,” says Rabson. A Hotel and Catering Operations qualification is a great study option for business owners who want to become more successful at what they do. In fact, there are many guesthouses, bed and breakfasts and catering businesses run by owners who have passion for what they do, “We are fortunate because we live in a world where we are surrounded by technology. It’s become part of our day to day fibre – whether it’s operating an iPad, a laptop or high-end audio visual equipment –people are becoming technology savvy,” says Rabson. Have you considered using these skills as a career? If you have an added passion for popular culture and the media industry, a course in Video and Television is sure to give you a head start. Graphics and Creative Advertising will also assist business owners in the marketing of their business, as well as in getting the job of your dreams. While not a new career, it is one in which you continually need to upgrade your skills to remain employable. A course in Graphics and Creative Advertising will equip one with all the tools and knowledge to market one’s business through a variety of media, including print, television, point-of-sale, radio, online and outdoor advertising. Three-day jazz concert in Joburg Staff Reporter news@inner-city-gazette.co.za
F
or the next three nights, the streets of Sandton will be gridlocked as hundreds of jazz lovers and fusion fanatics make their way to the Convention Centre for the 20th Standard Bank Joy of Jazz event. Starting tomorrow on Thursday night and spreading over four stages, Dinaledi, Conga, Mbira and Diphala, the City of Joburg-supported musical event will showcase 40 home-grown and international stars who are set to Atteridgeville born and now currently based in Europe, Tutu Puoane.
leave revellers bobbing to the beats and begging for more. City of Johannesburg’s Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development, Cllr Nonhlanhla Sifumba, has urged residents to put on their dancing shoes for the three-night party. “The Standard Bank Joy of Jazz has grown from strength to the strength in the past two decades. “Through this international event, we’ve been able to put Joburg on the map as the capital city of fun. So I’m encouraging everyone to come and enjoy the musical extravaganza,” says MMC Sifumba. Some of the artists set to enthrall the audience and keep them under their musical spell is Lesotho-born Tshepo Tshola, whose talent has been used far and wide, from the jazz genre to the uplifting sounds of gospel. Another performer to watch out for is
Christian McBride, who is a five-time Grammy Award-winning bassist. Since the early 1990s, he has recorded more than 300 performances as a sideman and released albums as a leader since 1995. Some of the cats he’s jammed with include Sting, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny and Roy Haynes. Hailing from Atteridgeville and now currently based in Europe, Tutu Puoane is going to mesmerise jazz lovers with her distinct and seductive voice. Puoane, who has won two SA Music Awards, is a skilled and experienced singer and performer, having gained respect from musicians and audiences alike. One of Europe’s best big bands, the Brussels Jazz Orchestra, invited her to work with them, resulting in an album celebrating the late Miriam Makeba, which scooped a Sama award in 2011.

he Foundation course is an 8-week fulltime introductory course aimed at getting aspirant photographers on the road to becoming professional photographers. For over twenty six years, the Market Photo Workshop has played a pivotal role in the training of South Africa’s photographers, ensuring that visual literacy reaches neglected and marginalized parts of our society. Since it was founded in 1989, by world-renowned photographer David Goldblatt, the Photo Workshop has been an agent of change and representation, informing photographers, visual artists, educators, students and broader communities of trends, issues, and debates in photography and visual culture. The Market Photo Workshop also runs a number of Public Programmes, which are a series of events involving and directed at professional photographers, visual artists, educators, students as well as the broader public. These Public Programmes seek to inform the trends, practices, methods, and contemporary ways of working and thinking in South African photography practice through exposure to a broad understanding of visual culture as well as a networking platform that encourages critical thinking and engagements.
