Mashaba fires Peetz “I have made it clear that‚ under my leadership‚ the City of Johannesburg will not tolerate such conduct any longer. Irrespective of one’s role in the City, and irrespective of your political affiliation, there will be accountability for wrongdoing.”

J

ohannesburg Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba has axed the council’s head of economic development after she allegedly lied about taking a relative on an official trip to Spain. Sharon Peetz was confronted with the allegations earlier this year. A forensic investigation initially found that the city had not incurred any costs related to her family member’s travel‚ Mashaba said. Peetz allegedly falsified a proof of payment to a travel agency to appear that she, and not the city, paid for a family member to accompany her on an official trip to Spain, Mashaba said further forensic investigation had found that the money concerned is allegedly owed to a travel agent‚ meaning that the city has not suffered any losses. “Through her actions‚ it is my belief that Cllr Peetz has misled myself‚

the Council and the residents of Johannesburg. I have made it clear that‚ under my leadership‚ the City of Johannesburg will not tolerate such conduct any longer‚“ Mashaba said in a statement issued on Wednesday night. “Irrespective of one’s role in the City‚ and irrespective of your political affiliation‚ there will be accountability for wrongdoing.” Peetz’s dismissal has been approved by the federal executive of the Democratic Alliance. Meanwhile, the ANC has now called for the mayor to be fired alleging he covered up the fraud. ANC Joburg spokesperson Jolidee Matongo said that at an earlier council meeting the allegations against Peetz had been discussed. Matongo said the fraud had been uncovered when the travel agent sent an invoice to the city for payment. “Diligent officials noticed the fraud. The travel agent said that Peetz had instructed her to book her mother and pay them using the city’s accounts. Peetz, during the meeting denied the

allegation. The mayor then secretly asked her to pay the agent for her relative’s trip, which she did not do. It was only when the travel agent demanded money from the council that Mashaba fired her,” said Matongo. The mayor took the decision to fire her because he was just about to be exposed of having made an agreement with her to cover up the gross misconduct by stealing taxpayers’ money,” he added. “We are not impressed by the mayor’s publicity stunt. He pretends to be a man of integrity, yet he tried to cover up by agreeing with the councillor to pay back the money. We call on the mayor to step down as he was part of the cover-up mission,” Matongo concluded. The EFF Caucus leader in Johannesburg Cllr Musa Novela told the Inner-City Gazette that, “we note the Councilors dismissal and applaud the mayor but we call for her to be dismissed as Councillor in the city of Johannesburg - She misled Council,” Novela con-

cluded. According to the Executive mayors office Dr Mpho Phalatse will act in position of fired Peetz until a permanent appointment is made. Inner - City Gazette could not reach Peetz for comment. To follow up on this story visit our facebook page

“W

e established this research hub in order to find out what tools and apps work for who and as importantly, where they work.” Says Katz. “For example, YouTube is a great channel for dispersing information in an entertaining way, yet it won’t work in the townships where data is at a premium and wifi not always accessible.” Katz goes on to explain that not only does the research hub establish ‘what’ works ‘where’, but they also keep up to date daily with new tools and apps that will enhance your social media reach. “So if for example you wish to establish a consultancy to small businesses in assisting them to increase their social media footprint, or perhaps if you run an agency and have different clients who occupy space in different industries, it would serve you well to attend the Boston Social Media workshops and learn the latest tools that you will have at your disposal. “These tools change on a monthly basis, and the research hub’s work is continual in this arena. “in keeping up to date with the latest tools and apps, you find that many of the tools, especially those that are the most effective, become oversubscribed due to demand, and you are then forced to find out what is the net most effective, or newest app available to you” , says Katz. “In the next series of workshops we will be releasing new aps and new findings, “ says Katz. “A popular app is HootSuite – with this app you can create small businesses in various industries, and you will use one app to monitor and moderate all the activity in all the businesses. “Some apps work better in certain industries than in others – this is what we will tell you about in the workshops,” says Katz. In social media you can create your own small business in by consulting to agencies or by running the social media on behalf of a small business. “You can invoice by the hour or work on a monthly retainer. When you upskill in this sphere, you open many new opportunities to increase earning potential. Ever heard of Klear? This is an influencer-marketing platform that makes it easy to find influencers, research and measure influencer campaigns.

What does this mean for you? Once you have identified who the influencers are in your industry, you can tag onto their blogs, negotiate shared advertising with them and see who their audience is. Using this app you can review the content that you are posting, and what your competitors are posting, and see what works and what doesn’t work. “We really enjoy researching the apps out there so that we can bring you our results of what is most successful”, says Katz. “Take Klout as another example. This app will also tell you who the greatest influencers are in your industry and it will indicate to you who you should be connecting with”. The names of the apps are enough to pique anyone’s interest to find out what they can do for you. Woobox allows you to customise your page with various tabs that suit your business. Hashtagify allows you to load your topic and learn what the most popular hashtags are, which then allows you in turn to use the most followed hashtags in your twitter or Instagram campaign. “What we are saying”, says Katz. “Is that to be effective and successful you need to not only have a social media cam paign, but to learn the apps and tools that will help you focus and target your campaign to the most appropriate audience in the right geographic locations for your business. And this can be for any business from

Partnership to revive Inner City Staff Reporter news@inner-city-gazette.co.za

T

he City of Johannesburg and the Johannesburg Inner City Partnership, represented by the City Improvement District Forum, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in which they pledged to work together to revitalise and regenerate the Johannesburg inner city. The undertaking was made at an Inner City Partnership Forum at Museum Africa in Newtown convened by the City on Thursday July 27 to engage the private sector, developers, investors and other stakeholders to seek solutions to urban decay suffocating the inner city. The MoU reads in part: “The parties agree to work as a collective to establish a steering committee outlining actions on which to partner for improved cleanliness in the inner city, mobilising the necessary support and funding to enable the project to succeed. “The MoU aims to establish issues of mutual interest, investment opportunities and processes that will assist to meet objectives of a clean and healthy City.” In his address, Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba said the days of talk shops were over, saying this was time for action. He urged the private sector to join the City in its mission to make the inner city into a place of opportunity for all. He was accompanied by three Members of the Mayoral Committee – Cllr Michael Sun

“The strategy has an objective to address challenges faced by the inner city.” — MMC Ngobeni

Region F administrative head and MMC for Development Planning, Cllr Funzela Ngobeni (Public Safety) and Cllr Nico de Jager (Environment and Infrastructure Services). The Johannesburg Inner City Partnership was represented by Anne Steffny. Mayor Mashaba said his dream was to turn the inner city into a construction site. “This is your opportunity to help us turn around hijacked and bad buildings. We bank on you to make the inner city a construction site within 12 months. “When you invest your money you must know you have the government’s support. I have dedicated resources to turn the city around and I need your help to do itt. Together we have the potential to succeed and make the city full of opportunities for entrepreneurs and artisans,” the Mayor said.

MMC for Development Planning, Cllr Funzela Ngobeni, said the City had been working together to ensure that projects in the inner city are aligned with its approved strategy. “The strategy has an objective to address challenges faced by the inner city, as well as to implement longer term goals to create a sustainable live, work, place space for all inner city stakeholders.” Ngobeni who chaired the sessions, is the administrative head of Region F, added that he was facilitating a multi-pronged approach towards creating an enabling environment, with the knowledge that the critical contribution investors make towards economic growth and reducing unemployment. MMC Peetz told the forum her department

had set aside R5.8-million for an investment masterplan, R9-million for informal trading and R35-million for the development of small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs). MMC Sun said his department had deployed 198 police officers, 30 vehicles, 80 points men and a management unit to enforce by-laws in the hotspots identified by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD). Cllr Sun said CCTV cameras installed in the inner city were now linked to the Intelligence Operators Centre at the Public Safety headquarters. Additional CCTV cameras would soon be rolled out. He added that the City would soon establish a municipal court to specifically deal with by-law offences. The Mayor’s Strategic Adviser, Thabo Maisela, said the housing backlog in Johannesburg stood at 158 000 units, with 80 000 units in the inner city alone. He said growth in the city had been hampered by the high number of bad and hijacked buildings, criminality and social ills. Maisela said the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), Johannesburg Social Housing Company (JOSHCO) and the Housing Department had appointed a team of experts to prepare and implement a strategy to deal with the housing problem. “But we have to do this with the private sector. We need all stakeholders to make the city a place we can all be proud of,” he said. The Johannesburg Inner City Partnership will make its presentations to the city in the next few weeks.

T

he organisers of the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN are proud to announce that the prize purse for the 2017 event has increased to an impressive R212 000. Celebrating its second anniversary in 2017, the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN attracted an impressive field of just over 11 000 runners in its inaugural year. “We are excited to be able to offer an increased prize purse in 2017,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports. “This impressive increase was made possible through the remarkable support received from sponsors and entrants alike. Prize money has been allocated to the top ten men’s and women’s finishers in the open category with the men’s and women’s winners each taking home a deserving total of R25 000. Prize money has also been allocated to the top three men’s and women’s finishers in the Junior, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70+ categories. We are proud to be able to reward Elite runners for the hard work that goes into achieving and maintaining the level at which they perform. We trust that the prize purse

While the prize purse increase will mainly appeal to the Elite field, the everyday runner is also in for a treat and can look forward to mesmerising on route entertainment and a memorable route experience that will guide him/her through and/ or past a number of Johannesburg’s rich heritage sites. We hope and trust that all runners will be inspired by the running excellence on offer on the day.”
