Joburg Mayor Parks Tau announces the youth programme at Museum Africa.
oburg Mayor Parks Tau has launched the Vulindlel’ eJozi Programme, a youth employment accelerator which he said is aimed at breaking barriers to opportunities for at least 200 000 youths by 2016. The programme, launched on Tuesday at Museum Africa in Newtown, is a partnership between the City and Harambee Youth Accelerator, a private sector initiative. It was first announced by the Mayor in his State of the City Address on May 6. Mayor Tau said the initiative was launched on the first day of June, Youth Month, to highlight the importance of the youth to the city’s economy and its future. “We felt it important to begin Youth Month by clarifying our commitment made during the State of the City Address. Vulindlel’ eJozi is a call to action to all youth to enable their generation to shape future society,” Mayor Tau said. He added that Vulindlel’ eJozi, which means ‘open the way in Joburg’ in isi-
Zulu, would swing into full operation on June 16 as part of this year’s National Youth Day commemoration. “With over 800 000 unemployed youths in Joburg, the success of Vulindlel’ eJozi would be linked to the determination of youths involved. About R150 million has been budgeted for the programme in the 20152016 financial year.” Harambee Executive Director Tamera Campbell said the partnership with the City through Vulindlel’ eJozi would not only look at work placements for the youth but also tackle other entry barriers such as work readiness and foundation numeracy, literacy and digital literacy levels by providing training. Through Vulindlel’ eJozi, youths will also be able to access learnerships and apprenticeship opportunities to improve their permanent employment eligibility and raise earning potential. “It is important for young people to understand that these opportunities are for them to improve themselves in order to access better opportunities of permanent employ-
ment. Through this partnership with the City, Vulindlel’ eJozi is going to break down barriers to meaningful employment opportunities at no cost to the youth,” said Campbell. The programme will identify and create opportunities for registered youths based on their aptitudes and capabilities, Campbell added. The programme is expected to include employment in companies of all sizes as well as in extended public works programmes, national youth service programmes and micro-enterprise development channels such as Jozi@Work. The project will also facilitate the placement of appropriate candidates in training and education programmes. Youths interested in participating in the Vulindlel’ eJozi programme can register online at http://vulindleljozi. mobi from June 16. Those without internet access can do so at community centres. They can also access the mobi site from City libraries and free City Wi-Fi hotspots. Harambee teams will conduct registration drives in informal and under-serviced areas.

T
he City of Joburg’s waste management entity, Pikitup has partnered with the Abomakgereza company, a brainchild of social entrepreneur Sifiso Ngobese, to help take waste management in the city to a higher level. The Abomakgereza company has developed uniquely branded waste trolleys that promote recycling, generate decent advertising revenue for informal waste collectors and also help keep the city clean, City of Joburg says in a statement. Ngobese said the concept had taken off in a big way. “We are currently piloting three trolleys in
Joburg Central and have received positive feedback. Our trolleys, to be used by informal waste collectors to transport recyclables, have several safety features and are designed in accordance with JMPD and SAPS safety specifications, provide a sense of dignity and belonging to collectors and create opportunities,” said Ngobese. He added that the collectors received 10% of the advertising revenue generated by the trolleys and the money they earned from selling recyclable products. “We’ll soon roll out 200 trolleys to informal collectors to use in and around the city,” he said. Ngobese, with the help of Red Bull, launched the Abomakgereza
Project, which is named after the township slang used to describe informal recyclers. He says it is an initiative that merges social responsibility and business. Ngobese was inspired to create more functional and durable recycling collection trolleys. He started to design trolleys that would be lightweight yet sturdy, spacious and more visible. “They will last longer, and will double up as mobile billboards for companies to advertise their services,” he explains. He had some difficulty getting big corporates to back the idea, and only got his breakthrough after attending a social entrepreneurship conference hosted by Red Bull. Ngobese refined his idea and made
such a good impression that Red Bull decided to partner with him. Ngobese and the energy drink company have piloted three recycling trolleys, fitted with a tracking device to monitor the fleet. The trolley drivers will draw revenue from refuse collection, and also receive a portion of the profits made from advertising, Ngobese says. The trolley drivers who join the project will have to go on a full-day training course, will be expected to keep the trolleys clean and will be monitored to ensure that they are doing their rounds. Ngobese and Red Bull got Nedbank and the City of Joburg to back the project. “We need more sponsors for the project run at full potential,” he adds.

Joburg Transport MMC Christine Walters
JRA to replace manhole covers
Johannesburg - Cast iron and steel manhole covers, drains and gutters, which have for many years been targeted by metal thieves, costing the City millions of rands, are to be replaced with non-metal products, according to Transport MMC Christine Walters. She said the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA would from July 1 turn to materials such as ductile iron, plastic, fibreglass and polymer to cover manholes throughout the city. “In the 2013-2014 financial year alone, more than 3 200 cast iron and steel manhole covers were reported stolen, forcing JRA to replace them at a total cost R2.9 million,” she said. Acting MD of JRA Mpho Kau said the current manhole covers are targeted by thieves because of their resale value. “This kind of theft is global. It worsens when the price of scrap metal is high. This spate of infrastructure theft and vandalism is direct sabotage and devaluation of the City’s infrastructure assets and poses a safety hazard to road users.” Kau said the new materials weigh three quarters less and are much more robust in design. “They will also carry the JRA logo, have no significant resale value and comply with all JRA and SABS specifications.” Operations Manager in JRA’s Marketing and Communications Department, Bertha Scheepers said the rollout would begin in July around the Joburg CBD. Kau condemned the illegal scrap metal dealers, saying they were complicit in ‘an increasing assault on the City’s infrastructure’. Residents are urged to report vandalism and theft to the City’s Call Centre on 0860 562 874 or approach the SAPS or the JMPD.

UN to raise $1.6 billion aid for Zim
The UN’s Bishow Palajuli
Harare, Zimbabwe - The UN plans to raise $1.6 billion from donors to improve food security, health and governance between 2016 and 2020, its envoy said on Friday. The UN has over the last decade raised money for humanitarian and development aid to Zimbabwe after the West withheld direct budget support in 2002 over policy differences with President Robert Mugabe. Donors like the US and EU funnel financial aid through charities and the UN, leaving Zimbabwe to fund its budget from taxes as it does not qualify for credit due to a $9 billion debt. UN coordinator Bishow Palajuli, said the agency had raised $1.64 billion for its Zimbabwe UN Development Assistance Framework which started in 2012 and ends this year, and now sought to do the same for the next four years. Parajuli however said donors were stretched, trying to cope with humanitarian crises around the world. The IMF predicts weaker growth after a drought hit farm output, while several companies are closing due to lack of credit, power shortages and cheaper imports. Relief agencies say up to 1.8 million people, over a tenth of the population, may need food aid this year. Reuters

Ex-Prime Minister Edward Lowassa
Ex-PM in bid for presidency
Dar es Salaam, Tanzania - Ex-Prime Minister Edward Lowassa, seen as frontrunner to be next leader, has launched a campaign for the party’s presidential nomination. The Chama Cha Mapinduzi party has ruled since independence in 1961 and the fractious opposition is not expected to challenge its position in a parliamentary and presidential vote on October 25. “I have decided to run for president to tackle poverty,” Lowassa told supporters in Arusha on Saturday. President Jakaya Kikwete has overseen economic growth averaging 7% in the past decade, but his government is criticised for failing to deliver on tackling poverty. Lowassa said his top priorities include overhauling the country’s education, reducing poverty, boosting economic growth and fighting corruption. “We will use the natural resources, including natural gas, to develop our nation. We cannot build a modern economy without curbing corruption,” he said. Businesses have long complained that corruption is one of the main reasons for the high cost of doing business. Tanzania is estimated to have over 53.2 trillion cubic feet of gas reserves off its southern coast, but its energy sector has been dogged by allegations of graft and other problems. Lowassa, 61, faces a stiff challenge from rivals who include Makongoro Nyerere, son of founding president Julius Nyerere. While it has been ruled by one party for over 50 years, Tanzania has seen peaceful transitions to different presidents since multiparty politics returned in 1995. AFP

aizer Chiefs have confirmed the departure of coach Stuart Baxter a year before his contract was due to expire. At a press briefing on Tuesday Amakhosi chairman Kaizer Motaung confirmed that Baxter’s successful three-year spell at Naturena has ended. Baxter said he leaves Amakhosi with fond memories and on good terms. “I don’t know what I’m doing. I’m looking for a job, for now I will go back to Sweden and have a rest,” he said. Baxter, a two-time and the current PSL Coach of the Season, delivered two League titles for the club, the Nedbank Cup and the MTN8 trophy

Also confirmed at the press briefing is that goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, defender Tefu Mashamaite and midfielder Mandla Masango will leave the club upon the expiry of their contracts next month. Also released is Katlego Mphela, Siyabonga Nkosi and Josta Dladla. It was also revealed that Simphiwe Mtsweni, Chris Matombo, Levy Mokgothu, Zitha Macheke and Ovidy Karuru will be loaned out next season. Motaung said inability to agree on financial terms led to the exit of PSL Footballer of the Season Tefu Mashamaite. We exceeded that offer but there was a delay. We decided that we cannot go forward and therefore we have terminated negotiations as far as Mashamaite is concerned.” Masango is believed to be joining Mpumalanga Black Aces where new club coach Muhsin Ertugral is a huge fan of the player. “Mandla was made an offer and we made a counter offer and then he came back with another counter offer,” Motaung announced at the press conference in Naturena. Now our source confirms that Masango and Aces have been in
contact, and that he could become Ertugral’s first signing after being made “a very good offer”. Maritzburg United boss Steve Komphela has been linked with the Amakhosi hot seat. However Zola Doda reports that Maritzburg United have refused to comment regarding Steve Komphela, who has been linked with Kaizer Chiefs. Komphela is expected to take over from Baxter, whom he assisted at Bafana Bafana. But Maritzburg operations manager Quintin Jettoo said the club will not release a statement about the matter. “We don’t have anything about this because this happens at the end of every season,” he said
Record breaker...Anaso Jobodwana
SA sprinter breaks his own record Athletics Correspondent
S
outh African sprinter Anaso Jobodwana broke his own 200m record as he finished second behind Justin Gatlin at the Prefontaine Classic on Saturday night. Jobodwana crossed the line in 20.04s, lowering the mark of 20.06s he set at the Cayman Invitational last month. Before then, Morne Nagel’s record of 20.11 had stood for 13 years. On Saturday Gatlin won the race in a time of 19.68, the fastest time this year over the distance. Usain Bolt holds the world record at 19.19. This year, only three men have gone faster than Jobodwana in the 200m; Gatlin, Dedric Dukes (19.99) and Andre de Grasse (20.03). Ethiopian indoor world record holder Genzebe Dibaba ran the fifth fastest women’s 5 000m ever (14:19.76) while London Olympic 400 gold medallist Kirani James also looked sharp, clocking an eye-catching and world leading 43.95 seconds. Double Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce of Jamaica won a high quality women’s 100 in 10.81 seconds, the best time of 2015. World silver medallist Murielle Ahoure of Ivory Coast was second in the same time. Qatari world indoor high jump winner Mutaz Essa Barshim (2.41m), Djibouti miler Ayanleh Souleiman (3:51.10), Kenyan Olympic and world steeplechase champion Ezekiel Kemboi (8:01.71) and French high hurdler Pascal Martinot-Lagarde (13.06 seconds) also set the year’s best marks. Former world champion Tyson Gay opened his season with a winning run of 9.88 seconds in the men’s 100. Allyson Felix, the Olympic 200 gold medallist, stepped up to the 400 and defeated London Games winner Sanya Richards-Ross. Felix won in 50.05 with Richards-Ross second in 50.29.
