Biblionef South Africa secured a donation of R156 000 from Wings of Support, a private initiative of staff of airline companies KLM and Martinair. Two of their members of

staff were guests at the ceremony. The Director for the City of Johannesburg Library and Information Services Directorate, Nobuntu Mpendulo said education is one of the biggest challenges facing South Africa, and at the moment the crucial stage of early childhood development is nascent. “If we can provide books for children, and get them excited about reading before they reach the foundation phase of the school system, we are guaranteed better results in

the later phases. It is also about uplifting the communities, and about the children who will have access to these books, and whose lives will be positively affected,” she added. The Library and Information Services, in partnership with Biblionef South Africa, handed over toys and books to the centres at a function at the Orange Farm Library. The information campaign was part of the City of Johannesburg’s Growth and Development Strategy (GDS) 2040 and supports the Early

Childhood Development strategy of increasing literacy, skills and lifelong learning. In a statement Biblionef South Africa said this ties in with its vision to lay the foundation for children to make good decisions through critical thinking. “That would help them to be able to live balanced and productive lives; to create lifelong readers which results in a society that can make informed decisions; has access to education resulting in a so-

ciety where everyone is literate, and finds reading both a great pleasure and a necessity.” Biblionef South Africa has, since 1998 supported more than 900 early childhood development centres, and makes books available in all official languages of South Africa. The organisation donates an average of 12 000 books each month, and has reached nearly 4 million children, the statement added. For more information on Biblionef, visit www.biblionefsa.org.za

Ombudsman pledges to uphold human rights ‘I aspired to be a fighter for human rights , that is why I gravitated towards law and wished to become the defender of the helpless’

oburg’s newly appointed ombudsman Adv Siduduzo Gumede has promised residents equitable justice that upholds human rights, in line with the Constitution. Adv Gumede said impartiality is the key principle in the independence of the Office of the Ombudsman. “My job is to ensure impartiality and resolve disputes in a just and equitable manner to the satisfaction of the complainant,” he said. The ombudsman’s office will be setting up infrastructure and hiring staff over the next three months, and will start taking complaints from 1 July. It is situated at 36 Boundary Rd in Houghton. Joburg Mayor Parks Tau said the ombudsman is

the final arbiter in disputes between residents and City officials, in line with the City’s Growth and Development Strategy 2040 (GDS 2040), which called for good governance, transparency and accountability in service delivery. “Adv Gumede has demonstrated commitment to justice and exhibited an acute sense of striving to improve the lives of others. We hope these qualities will come to the fore as his office receives complaints from residents from July,” he said. Adv Gumede studied law at Wits University and the University of Cape Town. He also studied in the UK, where he graduated with a Master of Law degree from the University of Kent at Canterbury. “I grew up in the same neighbourhood as Justice Pius Langa, the late former Chief Justice, and I as-

pired to be a fighter for human rights like him. That is why I gravitated towards law and wished to become the defender of the helpless as well,” he said. Before establishing a law practice, Adv Gumede served as legal counsel for various companies and organisations, including Old Mutual, BP and the Financial Services Board. “I guess you can say I’ve come full circle, Joburg ombudsman Adv Siduduzo Gumede from being a clerk at I grew up admiring were social acHome Affairs in KwaDukuza to being of service to residents tivists who dealt with community to ensure that good governance, issues and the Office of the Omtransparency and accountability are budsman has been established to upheld by City officials. City launches autism awareness month Johannesburg - The City shone the spotlight on people living with autism when it lit the iconic Nelson Mandela Bridge in Braamfontein for two hours last Thursday. The occasion launched Autism Month to heighten awareness on the condition. April 2 was declared World Autism Awareness Day by the UN eight years ago, to improve the quality of life of people affected by the condition. Autism results from a neurological disorder that affects the functioning of the brain, irrespective of gender, race or socioeconomic sta-

tus. It is characterised by impairments in social interaction, problems with verbal and non-verbal communication and restricted, repetitive behaviour, interests and activities. The stigmatisation and discrimination associated with the illnesses remain substantial obstacles to diagnosis and treatment. Figures from Autism South Africa show that one in 99 children are affected by autism and the signs of speech impairments can be observed around the age of three. If detected early, autism can be corrected. Health and Social Development

MMC Nonceba Molwele said the City is involved to remove the stigma that people living with the condition have to endure everyday of their lives. “It will also offer support to their families and caregivers and educate the public that this has nothing to do with witchcraft. The City will from 15 to 24 April host community workshops on autism in all seven regions. It will then round it off with an 8km run/walk in the inner city and conduct health screening on 3 May with the Dr Love Foundation, Autism South Africa and FEED.

Renamo to resume insurgency

Garissa attacker identified as official’s son Nairobi, Kenya - One of the four gunmen in the Garissa University College attack, in which 148 people were killed last Thursday, was the son of a Kenyan government official from Mandera county, which borders Gedo. Abdirahim Abdullahi, an ethnic Somali, was reported missing by his father after he crossed into Somalia to join al Shabaab. Military spokesman David Obonyo said jets pounded the Al-Shabaab camps in the Gedo region on Sunday. “Aerial images show that the camps were destroyed.” However, Al Shabaab spokesman Abu Musab said none of its camps were damaged. The militants have killed over 400 people on Kenyan soil in the last two years, including 67 during a siege at Nairobi’s Westgate shopping mall in 2013, piling po-

litical pressure on President Uhuru Kenyatta that intensified with last week’s killings. Kenya has struggled to stop the flow of militants and weapons across its 700 km border with Somalia, and the violence has also damaged the economy by scaring away tourists and investors. Kenyatta said the planners and financiers of Islamist attacks were “deeply embedded” within Kenyan society and urged the Muslim community to do more to root out radicalisation. Opposition leader Raila Odinga said the government should pull out, just as the US withdrew troops after the 1993 Black Hawk Down incident in Mogadishu. Garissa was the most deadly attack since al Qaeda bombed the US embassy in 1998, killing over 200 people and wounding thousands.

Retrial of former-president and sons begins Cairo, Egypt - A court has begun a retrial on of former president Hosni Mubarak and his sons, for allegedly diverting public funds earmarked for the renovation of presidential palaces to upgrade family properties. Mubarak, 86, who was overthrown in a 2011 popular uprising, was sentenced to three years in prison last May and his two sons were given four-year jail terms in the same case. In January, Egypt’s high court overturned the conviction against the frail Mubarak,

who is currently being treated in a military hospital in Cairo. His two sons were also freed pending retrial. State TV aired brief footage of Mubarak and his sons inside a cage in the courtroom in the Police Academy. The case was adjourned to April 29. In November a court dropped charges against Mubarak of conspiring to kill protesters in the 2011 uprising, raising fears among human rights activists that the old guard was making a comeback.

Guebuza. That agreement was to end the conflict and disarm Renamo. Setting up a new military body would be a violation of the accord.

Khartoum, Sudan - On Sunday rebels in South Kordofan said they had captured a lorry carrying ballot boxes to polling stations for elections due next week, vowing to disrupt voting in the conflict-hit region. Sudan People’s Liberation Army-North spokesperson Arnu Lodi said they captured a vehicle carrying ballot boxes on the road linking the state capital Kadugli with the town of Dilling. “The SPLA-N will press its military campaign plan to stop elections in South Kordofan,” Lodi said in the statement. But army spokesperson Colonel Al-Sawarmy Khaled Saad denied knowledge of the ambush. Sudan’s opposition is boycotting the elections, which are widely expected to extend President Omar alBashir’s rule. His government has been battling the SPLA-N in South Kordofan and Blue Nile since 2011. Violence has risen in South Kordofan and Blue Nile, and last week the government said fighting since the beginning of March had displaced 20 000. Defence Minister Abdel Mohammed Hussein said the army “will not allow the rebels to impede elections”. Bashir has pledged to bring peace to conflict-stricken states, either by force or through talks. Cops ordered to shoot Blantyre, Malawi - The government has ordered police to shoot ‘dangerous criminals’ who attack albinos in order to sell their body parts for witchcraft. “Shoot every criminal who is violent when caught red-handed abducting people with albinism,” police chief Lexen Kachama told officers at the weekend, local media said. Six albinos have been killed since December, according to the Association of Persons with Albinism in Malawi. Kachama said he does not want to ‘hear of a police officer chasing criminals, especially those abducting albinos, carrying teargas or any other soft weapon’. “That is why I am ordering the police to use weapons in proportion to the gravity of the offence. We need to be secure from criminals,” he added. Kachama, appointed last month by President Peter Mutharika, ordered his force not to be afraid to use ‘live ammunition’ after criminals shot a police officer in Blantyre last week. “We will not put down our weapons until Malawians are living and doing their business freely,” he said. Albinos have been attacked across Africa in recent months. The UN warned that the situation is particularly acute in Tanzania, Burundi and Malawi. It said the spike in Tanzania may be linked to elections in October 2015, as campaigners attempt to win over influential sorcerers. The UN Human Rights Council last month decided to appoint an expert to investigate abuses suffered by albinos across east Africa. AFP

Ex-Bafana star tips Chiefs to win title Amakhosi fans hope their team sustains the lead to the end of the season.

ormer Bafana full-back David Nyathi believes Kaizer Chiefs will hold on to their lead and win the Absa Premiership this season. The Glamour Boys, who were knocked out of the Champions League following their defeat to Raja Casablanca on Sunday, have endured a difficult 2015 thus far, winning just once in their last six encounters in all competitions. Despite winning two, drawing two and losing two in the League this year, Chiefs still maintain an eight-point lead over closest rivals Mamelodi Sundowns, although they do have a game in hand, yet Nyathi feels they will remain in the lead come the end of May. “I still believe Chiefs have a healthy lead. Obviously they are

showing signs of inconsistencies here and there, which is normal in a long season. But I still think they have a healthy lead. They got two wake up calls now, so we’ll see.” Nyathi, who donned the colours of both Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in his playing career, laughed off suggestions of a repeat of Mamelodi Sundowns’ turnaround last season, insisting this year’s title is within Amakhosi’s grasp. “I hope not!” he exclaims when asked if he feels the Brazilians will be able to catch Stuart Baxter’s men. Sundowns stole it from the back last season, and they can still do it. They have the team to win it, but I think Chiefs have a healthy lead. If they can just maintain their focus, I think they should be able to do it.” Meanwhile our correspondent re-

ports that Bafana Bafana legend Philemon Masinga was disappointed to see Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns exit the Champions League, but he feels the tournament could be made more financially attractive. Amakhosi lost to Moroccan side Raja Casablanca 3-0 on aggregate while the Brazilians went down 3-2 to DR Congo’s TP Mazembe on the weekend. “I believe we have the best marketed and organised league in the country but for us to become a powerhouse in continental football means we must be powerful in these club competitions,” said Masinga. “Look at European teams, they’re always playing in the UEFA Champions League Spain and in Germany because they prioritise such competitions and that bodes well for the national team. They always finish in

the semis or reach the finals giving exposure to the players and so on. It is sad to see our big two clubs losing out in the past weekend but we still have time to rectify our mistakes and go back to play in Africa. I may not know what led to their exits or come with excuses but the national team will be hugely affected by the exit of these two sides.” The legend added: “I think if you look at the CAF club competitions and compare them to Europe, you’ll find that ours are not paying better. I think these clubs end up spending more money in travelling and logistics while getting less in return or when they reach knockout stages. The point is we lack a good marketing strategy for these tournaments and there’s a need to ensure clubs benefit from participating in Africa.”

Banyana ready for AAG qualifier

Sports Correspondent

Banyana Banyana started preparing for the second leg of the All Africa Games qualifier against Botswana at AW Muller Stadium at the University of Johannesburg earlier this week ahead of the game at Dobsonville Stadium on Saturday (kick-off - 14:00). The women’s national team recorded a 1-0 victory in the first leg at Molepolole Stadium in Gaborone. Coach Vera Pauw’s charges stand a good chance to qualify for the 2015 All Africa Games, with an away goal advantage. A draw or win will ensure a ticket to Congo in September. Pauw said preparations for the first leg were not ideal, but they still managed to win. “We expect a tough challenge from Botswana as they showed they can be dangerous if left unchecked. We hope the crowd will support the team, and with the experience we got from the Cyprus Cup a few weeks ago, I hope we can win again.” The is part of a double-header where the SA Under-23 team will play against Sudan, a second leg clash for the All Africa Games qualifiers. South Africa lost the first leg 2-0 in Sudan.
