Call for solution to social ills ‘Nyaope is destroying so many lives; unemployment contributes to this as the youth have nothing to do and engage in dangerous activities’
Health and Social Development MMC Nonceba Molwele addresses the gathering during the youth workshop.
Johannesburg - Joburg Health and Social Development MMC Nonceba Molwele has urged the city’s youth to help their respective communities find solutions to social challenges such as teenage pregnancy, drug and alcohol abuse, and HIV-Aids infection. MMC Molwele was speaking at the Youth Health Workshop on HIVAids, Substance Abuse and Teenage Pregnancy at the Orlando East Communal Hall at the weekend. The workshop, part of the City’s Youth Month programme to mark the 39th anniversary of the June 16 1976 uprising, was addressed by experts and activists in various health and social development fields. They included Dr Oscar Radebe, who spoke on the benefits of medical male circumcision and the role of teenage fathers; gender activist Wendy Phaluwa of the People Opposed to Women Abuse (POWA); youth activist Yvonne Gala of loveLife; motivational speaker and actress Nomzamo Mbatha, who implored the youth to follow their dreams; and Mandla Mbatha of the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependency
(SANCA), who encouraged drug addicts to seek help. More than 500 youths attended the gathering, held under the theme: “Health in the Hands of the People.” Top officials from the City’s Health Department also attended. “I thank my team, NGOs and our partners for initiating this conversation with young people. We cannot do anything for you without you. Programmes like this help us to engage with you so we can plan properly. As we celebrate the youth of 1976, today’s youth have different challenges, which we should tackle together,” MMC Molwele said. “Be our partners, be part of the solutions. The city is deploying resources to save our youths from drugs, alcoholism and teen pregnancies. Help us rescue the youth from these demons. We need future leaders from among you. If you have a problem with drugs or alcoholism, volunteer to go to rehab,” she said. Mary Daka, the City’s Deputy Director of Public Health, said the purpose of the annual workshop was to “dialogue with out-of-school youth” on the challenges they faced, such as HIV-Aids infections, which
now stand at 17% in Gauteng alone. She said teenage boys were being drawn into the conversation to tackle underage pregnancies. “We have to capacitate the youth to help us find solutions to these problems,” Daka said. “Nyaope is destroying so many lives. Unemployment is contributing to this scourge, the youth have nothing to do other than engage in dangerous activities,” she said. Thandeka Radebe of loveLife said 13-year-old pregnant girls visited the clinic for check-ups and counselling daily. “Most of them are ignorant of what protection is available. I see 13-16-year-olds coming for checkups alone. I think sex education in schools should start early. It should be done by teen moms and dads, their peers who have gone through the same experience,” she said. Healthcare promoter Matshidiso Mawela said nyaope is destroying lives. “Something has to be done to save the youth from nyaope,” Mawela said. She added that teenage boys were reluctant to use condoms, insisting it was a girl’s responsibility to use contraception.

Reintegration initiative for ex-offenders ‘This ensures that they have something to look forward to when they get out of prison and not become idle, we all know how dangerous an idle mind can be’ Staff Reporter news@inner-city-gazette.co.za
T
he Department of Correctional Services has said that is determined to ensure effective social re-integration of ex-offenders, with more involvement by victims, families and communities. At the 2015 budget speech Correctional Services Minister Adv Michael Masutha spoke about his wish to see ex-offenders and parolees successfully reintegrated into society, with a new vision for life, away from crime. To ensure that the offender reintegration process is effective, 212 parolees and probationers were recently provided with start-up tools to enable them to open their own businesses, and thereby contribute to employment creation. The department has facilitated a partnership between Pride Life, a
wholly-black owned financial services provider as well as an NGO called Fear Free Life to broaden the scope and reach of interventions to correct offending behaviour. CEO of Pride Life, Cabby Magongwa says as a black SMME they have always wanted to make SA a better and safer place. “This is why we decided to engage with Fear Free Life to help parolees and ex-offenders earn an honest living and become active participants in the country’s economy. This partnership is an opportunity for us to be part of a process of reforming and reintegrating parolees and ex-offenders back into society through Christian-based values. “The ex-offenders through Fear Free Life will become part of Pride Life’s lead generation programme, which gives them an oppor-

tunity to engage with key stakeholders in the communities that include large Stokvels, burial societies, small businesses and Funeral Parlours in an effort to sell products and make a living for themselves. This ensures that they have something to look forward to when they get out of prison and not become idle, we all know how dangerous an idle mind can be.” All the parties involved are confident that these partnerships will contribute to more employment opportunities for parolees in the current and
next financial year. The employability and entrepreneurship opportunities for ex-offenders are key indicators of successful integration. Fear Free Life CEO Collin Khumalo says as the only ex-offender NPO that has successfully created a home for hardened criminals, who are now living a crime-free life based on Godly Principles, it was fitting for them to be part of this partnership. Magongwa and Khumalo concluded by encouraging other private businesses to be part of this initiative.
Beware of fake DDT schools Johannesburg - Communications Minister Faith Muthambi has warned the public about bogus training centres which purport to offer short courses on Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) set-top box installation. “I call on people to refrain from attending courses offered by these institutions;
they are operating illegally and have no accreditation. We are yet to make an official announcement on which centres will be accredited to offer such courses,” Minister Muthambi said on Tuesday. The Department of Communications
(DoC) said it has been inundated with calls from people wanting to verify the legality of these institutions in the last few weeks. The DoC said it is working closely with the Department of Labour (DoL) to design an accredited course for DTT installers. “Once the course content is finalised, the DoC will communicate through the media about where interested individuals can go to undertake such training. “While the process of migrating from analogue to digital television presents an economic opportunity for South Africans, people must be vigilant and avoid being robbed of their hard-earned money,” the department said. The Umhlanga Junction Extension block of apartments are becoming popular with UJ students.
Student apartments spring up ‘overnight’ Johannesburg - Apartments made entirely of shipping containers have sprung up almost overnight in Caroline Street, Brixton. The Umhlanga Junction Extension block of apartments, developed by Citiq Properties, drew visitors to watch the construction. Citiq Chief Executive Paul Lapham says the development took advantage of the dedicated cycle lane in Caroline Street. “This is part of the City’s Corridors of Freedom initiative; allowing students to cycle to their lectures swiftly and safely, instead of walking.” He explains that shipping containers make for an amazingly simple module, with the apartment block erected around basic living modules. The whole project costs around 80% of what it would to build a similar structure using traditional brick and mortar techniques. It took the company only two weeks to complete each floor and the project was ready for occupation within two months. “Creative design is required to make this a truly attractive apartment block. The shipping containers are combined with different materials, cladding and
colours to achieve a modern and appealing appearance,” Lapham adds. Each of the six floors has single and double rooms with a communal kitchen/dining area, recreation room, lounge and laundry. Energy efficiency is ensured through double-glazed windows. Hot water is provided by heat pumps and motion-sensors. There is also energy-efficient lighting throughout the building. As a bonus, rent includes one gigabyte free WiFi. Lapham says the next step will be to convert four semi-detached structures on the opposite side of the road. “Brixton is convenient for students studying at University of Johannesburg. We hope to create a village that caters for the needs of students and helps them achieve academic success,” Lapham said. Managing Director Arthur Blake says students are impressed with the unique accommodation. “We are considering adding two more floors to the block and erecting three similar buildings in the area.” Citiq is touting the new building technique as one possible solution to South Africa’s chronic housing shortage.

CBD gunmen nabbed Johannesburg - On Tuesday afternoon Johannesburg Central police arrested three suspects aged between 25 and 37 for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition in Pritchard Street, says Communications Officer Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele. He explains that four suspicious males started to walk faster when they saw police officers. “Police stopped them but one of them managed to run away. Two unlicensed firearms with no serial numbers and ammunition were found on them.” Warrant Officer Mbele says later that day police arrested a 31-year-old suspect for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition at corner Twist and Plein streets. “Police received information about someone pointing a firearm at corner Bree and Polly streets. Police found him with a loaded firearm which was reported stolen at Mondeor in March.” Armed robbers arrested Warrant Officer Mbele adds that detectives recently arrested six suspects between the ages of 20 to 34 for business robbery at the Asana building at corner Goud and Fox streets. He adds that it is alleged that the suspects robbed the Top Shop clothing shop at corner President and Polly streets on 22 June. “Four suspects entered the shop pretending to be customers; two of them produced firearms and took an undisclosed amount of money and cellphones. They forced staff and customers to the back of the shop and fled the scene using a metre taxi. Help from the community and CCTV footage led to the arrest of the suspects,” he added. Warrant Officer Mbele adds that 160 suspects were arrested by Johannesburg Central Cluster police for various offences during recent crime combating operations. He says the suspects were
arrested around Mondeor, Booysens, Moffatview, Langlaagte, Fairlands, Sophiatown, Brixton and Johannesburg Central area. “Among them six were arrested for common robbery, two for car hijacking, six for housebreaking and theft, one for murder, one for business robbery, four for possession of house breaking implements, three for business breaking, 10 for fraud, seven for domestic violence, 49 for drunk & driving, 20 for possession of drugs and 23 for shoplifting. The rest were arrested for crimes including theft, malicious damage to property, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, intimidation, possession of suspected stolen property, pointing with a firearm, assault common and assault GBH,” he says. Knifemen held for robbery Warrant Officer Mbele adds that police also arrested two suspects aged of 49 and 54 for armed robbery at Dragon City in Fordsburg. He says it is alleged that suspects robbed a woman at her shop. “They entered the shop that sells blankets pretending to be customers. One of them pulled out a knife and threatened to stab her if she made a noise. They took her wallet containing R2 000. She screamed for help and security guards chased the men as they fled. Police joined in and apprehended both suspects. The knife used in the commission of a crime and the money was recovered.” Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele adds that police also arrested two suspects aged 24 and 26 for possession of an unlicensed firearm and knife in Newtown. He says police on routine crime prevention saw two suspicious males. “One of them ran away and his friend was cornered. Police found a toy gun in his small bag. Police chased the other male and apprehended him; a knife was recovered from him,” he adds.

Beauty skills training offer Staff Reporter news@inner-city-gazette.co.za
A
Johannesburg beauty enterprise has initiated a bursary programme designed to empower young people with beauty skills in a bid to promote job creation and entrepreneurship. This is according to the Ellies Beauty Studio founder Liz Nchabeng. She says the beauty skills training programme includes nail technology, eyelash extensions, makeup and hair extensions; and interested individuals are urged to apply. “Learners are skilled to make their own wigs and also taught how to do special effects make up for TV and movies, to name a few. The skills pro-
gramme, which is already underway in other regions if free, we cover registration and tuition fees,” she says. Nchabeng adds that aspiring beauticians are being empowered and enjoying practicals while preparing to start their own businesses or get into employment. “There is limited space for aspiring beauticians to train in nail technology, make up, eyelashes and bonding extensions. We are looking for hard working individuals who have a passion for beauty. These include school drop outs and matriculants who are struggling to find employment. There is no age discrimination, though preference will be given to the youth. The learners will be issued a certificate of attendance upon
completing the course,” she says. Nchabeng adds that those who complete the course will be placed at other Ellies Beauty Studio branches, or may start their own businesses under her mentorship. “Our graduates are also referred to the NYDA for entrepreneurship workshops. These bursaries will be given on a first come first basis,” she adds. She adds that interested parties can call 076 540 9046 or send Email to elliesbeautystudio@gmail.com or go to Ellies Beauty Studios training centres for more information. Closing date is no later than 31 August. Application forms may be obtained from nearest Ellies centres, to be submitted with ID and CV copies.

He insists that the Clever Boys already have the quality to win titles but he says the introduction of players who have already won a lot of silverware could be the final piece of the puzzle. “One thing common in both of them is that they have won things with the bigger teams they have played for. They will bring the attitude of winners to every game they play. They will bring in that energy and help the younger players as well.” Contrary to some reports last season, Vilakazi has once again said he is happy to stay at the club. “The owners have pumped in a lot of money so we need to repay them.” Meanwhile Kaizer Chiefs winger Siphiwe Tshabalala says the defending League champions are looking the part as they begin preparations for the defence of their title this season. The Amakhosi players have been put through their paces at Naturena under new coach Steve Komphela. “It is looking good. We are enjoying training and are working hard to get fit. It is only a matter of time until we have to get back to playing serious matches. With the pre-season matches also drawing near we have to make sure that we up our fitness levels to avoid injuries,” he says. He adds that the Kaizer Chiefs fans are in for an entertaining season as they look to add to their trophy cabinet in the campaign this season.
“We have been in a break for a while now and I think that our supporters are ready to get back to the excitement of cup and league competitions. Exciting times are coming and while the supporters enjoy from the sides we will be doing our best to give them bragging rights on the field.” Kaizer Chiefs will be partaking in the King’s Super Cup in Swaziland later this month before their Soweto Derby match-up against foes Orlando Pirates in the Carling Black Label Cup on 1 August. Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune remains silent about his future and where he will be playing next season. According to KickOff, the 27-year-old is confident his representatives will be able to strike a deal that all parties involved are pleased with. “I can’t reveal what we’ve been discussing with my agent. It’s still early days for that,” said Khune. Khune opted not to extend his contract with Kaizer Chiefs at the end of the 2014/15 PSL season. His deal expired at the end of June and is currently a free agent. There have been reports that Mamelodi Sundowns were serious about luring Khune to Chloorkop, but so far no such developments have materialised. “I go to gym a lot and whoever comes and asks for my services, I’ll be ready. It’s part of the game, I guess I just have to be strong with the situation I’m facing right now, but something will come up in the coming weeks,” he said. Austin Ditlhobolo reports that the Tshwane giants were believed to be keen on Khune, but Sundowns signee Glenn Verbauwhede claims that Pitso Mosimane wants to sign Dareen Keet from Belgian side Kortrijk. Mamelodi Sundowns are interested in signing Bafana Bafana and KV Kortrijk goalkeeper Keet, according to Glenn Verbauwhede. The Belgian ‘keeper, who spent last season on loan at Free State Stars, has revealed that Keet could soon return to the Absa Premiership in a deal that would see him join Kortrijk. “My club wants to loan, sell or exchange me with the South African goalkeeper at Kortrijk, Darren Keet. I would like to go so I can see my children again. It’s been six months,” Verbauwhede said. The 30-year-old Verbauwhede battled with injuries immediately after signing for Sundowns two seasons ago, but he eventually made his PSL debut while on loan at Ea Lla Koto last season. However, he managed only six Absa Premiership appearances for Kinnah Phiri’s side.
