Achieving Individual Excellence

AUTUMN ISSUE

Welcome to the Autumn Issue The referendum decision for the UK to leave the EU is possibly the most significant domestic democratic event in my own lifetime. There is a lot of economic uncertainty at the moment but one thing remains clear for me about our future prosperity. This is that our prosperity continues to depend on our own ability to produce goods and services, with lots of added value, that customers in places all around the world want to buy from us. This is the case now and will always be the case, regardless of the trading environment that exists. Highclare School’s contribution to this is to educate young men and women to be able not only to go out and take up a productive role but also to have the values to enable them to be good citizens too. This holistic approach to education is something in which we strongly believe. We are changing the world, one child at a time. I am always reminded of this when I hear how well our pupils have done when they step out of their comfort zone and into a less familiar environment. Take, for example, 8 young men from our U5 (Year 11) and L6 who recently spent a week of their half term on a work experience programme with the company Hollywood Monster – a graphic design business. Under the auspices of the Mindshop Excellence programme, facilitated by one of our parents, Mr Jason Langford-Brown, the boys spent the week information gathering, brainstorming, mind-mapping, goal setting and flow charting their way to a presentation to the company bosses on their last day. They were asked to come up with real solutions to a series of real problems presented to them. It was a fantastic opportunity, which I know the boys benefitted from enormously. Thank you to Mr LangfordBrown, all at Mindshop Excellence and all concerned at Hollywood Monster for making it happen and for making the boys feel so welcome.

I wish you all a peaceful and restful Christmas and New Year break. I look forward to welcoming you all back to school in January, fully refreshed for the busy term ahead. Best wishes Dr R Luker Headmaster

Senior School Speech Night

The Guest Speaker at Highclare Senior School Prize Giving was the Revd Dr Rob Marshall, a current contributor to Radio 4’s Thought for the Day. Dr Marshall entertained parents, pupils and staff with his insight into faith in a digital age, an area in which he has formed a particular interest, having recently completed a doctorate on the impact of digital media on the radio audience and what a broadcaster must bear in mind when taking to the microphone! He was then invited to present prizes to a number of pupils who were given awards in all areas of the curriculum including music, sport, art and, of course, academic achievement. Headmaster Dr Richard Luker also congratulated pupils, past and present, on their excellent efforts and academic results during the last academic year, and gave a resume of the school’s achievements and successes including the excellent external examination results at both A level and GCSE. Pupils gave performances in music and drama and the school’s Rhapsody Choir concluded proceedings with their version of Sing by Gary Barlow and Andrew Lloyd Webber, which was warmly received by their audience.

Creative Writing Competition In it’s second year, the English Writing Competition, hosted by Highclare School, saw 83 entries from a variety of local junior schools. Pupils were invited to write a poem about a significant place. The winner was Isobel Parkes from Four Oaks Primary School who received the Highclare Junior School Writers Trophy. Her poem was entitled A Winter Wonderland. The top 3 winners received a book token and all participants received a certificate presented by Dr Luker at a presentation evening in the Senior School.

Highclare Achieves Superb Results in the 2016 ISA Midlands Art Competition Highclare students from both senior and junior schools achieved noteworthy success in the recent 2016 ISA Midlands Art competition. Highclare received a total of 7 mentions in the awards with 3 first place wins and 4 highly commended results in total. A first prize win went to Ruby Newman in the KS2 individual 3D category, whilst Danny Tiwana snapped top prize in the KS3/4 photography category. This is the second year running that Highclare has scooped the top prize in this section. Harry Singh also achieved first place in the KS3/4/5 fashion category.

We were delighted that Harry Singh's collection of scarf designs, Fluidity, were mentioned by judge Tony Cowland in his report about the competition: "Hand-eye co-ordination had been mastered and demonstrated, not only in the figurative paintings and drawings but also in the fashion section where the digitally coloured scarves were impressively completed." 2016 has seen the continuation of our highly successful photographic and digital pattern workshops in school and we are particularly proud that the achievements of the students in these areas have been recognised in this prestigious competition.

Senior & Sixth Form Treasure Island Pupils in U3 visited the Birmingham Repertory Theatre to see Treasure Island, a modern adaptation by Bryony Lavery of Robert Louis Stevenson’s timeless classic. Everyone enjoyed watching the live performance.

L4 English Theatre Visit to see Adolphus Tips When we first arrived at the Birmingham Rep theatre it was full of life with people buzzing everywhere. Everyone was waiting to see the play Adolphus Tips. When we went into the theatre we were greeted by great seats and a bright stage. Once the play had begun the audience fell silent. There was singing and dancing as well as very emotional moments. The play is set against the backdrop of the Second World War and tells of a little girl losing her cat called Adolphus Tips, as the family had to move away to allow for the preparations for the Normandy Landings. Michael Morpurgo's play explored themes of the evacuation of children, the loss of communities, the treatment of Jewish people, the arrival of the American troops and the D-Day Landings. The moment of the landings on the 6th June 1944 was extremely powerful. Adolphus Tips was a great production to watch as the performers always tried to get the audience involved in every way possible. We all left the theatre asking, ‘When will Mrs Dawson take us again to see such a great play?’ Sadie Carroll L4

Sixth Form Work Experience Mindshop Excellence: Hollywood Monster On Thursday we had the foundations of the solutions that we needed for the final presentation and all that was left to do was to solidify them, work on the PowerPoint, and make adjustments to the report.

In October myself and 7 other pupils were given the opportunity of a lifetime to gain valuable work experience during our two week half term. Jason Langford-Brown and Mindshop Excellence gave us the chance to work in a real business, 9am-5pm, dealing with real problems and coming up with a solution to them on our own.

Friday was the last day of our work experience at Hollywood Monster and entailed us presenting our ideas and findings to the whole Board of Directors! Although this was a daunting and nerve-racking experience, I am delighted to report that we all pulled through and managed to display and convey our thoughts to the Board in a really business-like manner for which we received an incredible response. I and the other 7 pupils involved are so grateful to have been involved in this initiative because we feel that we have learnt so much that we wouldn’t have at most other work experience placements. On behalf of all concerned, I would like to extend my thanks to Mr Langford-Brown, the Board of Directors at Hollywood Monster and Mindshop Excellence for giving us this opportunity. Tom West L6

On Monday we were greeted by all of the Hollywood Monster employees and Jason himself, and we were placed in a Boardroom which, for the rest of the week, was to be our own area and where we would be working 9-5 for the rest of the week. That first day consisted of learning business techniques such as Pareto Analysis and the Decision Matrix, techniques which would turn out to be vital in the coming days as, after Monday, we were left on our own without supervision! On Tuesday we were given our brief and what objectives we had to help us attain our goal. After this the day consisted of putting some of the techniques into action. Some of them involved the use of mind maps and ‘the magic wand technique’. We had access to all necessary data and the staff were on hand and willing to answer any questions we posed to them. On Wednesday we were involved in progressing the work we started on the previous day, using different techniques such as the RCB and the Pareto analysis, to really delve into the logistics of the business and, as a team, we worked together in an effort to create solutions.

U6 students attend the Tectonic Hazards Conference Professor Iain Stewart, known as geology’s ‘rock star’ and well known to the public as presenter of BBC science programmes such as Earth: the Power of the Planet and Volcano Live was one of the speakers at this year’s Tectonic Hazards Conference held in London. U6 Geographers found his presentation on mitigation of earthquake hazards to be particularly entertaining and informative. With six other fantastic presentations from university professors and chief examiners, the group gained great insight into the subjects discussed and came away with lots of tips and additional notes for the forthcoming A2 examinations. After our 6am start and six hours of lectures it was then time to visit Oxford Street for a study of the impact of Black Friday on pedestrian numbers (or really just to start our Christmas shopping!)

Junior Round-Up Survival days

There was great excitement on the coach on the way to Beaudesert Activity Centre at Cannock Chase as the children looked forward to their day. Children in J3 and J4 had five activities to experience: archery, the high wall, the stacking crates, the monkey trees and the traverse wall. The traverse wall tested the children’s ability to climb horizontally along a wall, whilst the high climbing wall and the monkey trees were tests of coordination, strength, bravery and trust. The climber was rigged into the safety harness and the rest of the team supported them by pulling on ropes to ensure the climber did not fall. All the climbing activities required the same trust in their team mates as it was their job to keep the climbers safe. The children in J5 and J6 enjoyed an exciting activity day at the Woodlands Adventure and Outdoor Learning Centre near Aldridge. The pupils were able to be adventurous, have fun, get fit and learn some team-building skills.

¡Hola! ¡Hola! – That has been a word that has been said and heard a lot this term at Highclare Juniors. It has been a pleasure to see how enthusiastic our children are at learning other languages. This was no more apparent than when we celebrated European Languages day on September 26th. For a whole day, every class adopted a language and shared some common greetings with one another. It also gave us an opportunity to look at and appreciate the cultures from around Europe and the World, celebrating our differences and our common ideals. The curriculum has seen us introduce Spanish alongside French which has been very popular among the children. Spanish is a lovely, musical language which is quite easy to learn initially as the sounds of the words and the spellings of the words are very complementary. The greater focus of teaching Modern Foreign Languages at Highclare is that the children get an appreciation of language learning from an early age which will, hopefully, stay with them and equip them with the necessary skills to continue learning languages later in life. It also helps them master and understand more deeply their own language and culture. Wishing you all: Feliz Navidad / Joyeux Noël.

Book Week All the pupils from Pre-School to J6 celebrated the work of Roald Dahl during their themed Book Week in October. Children and staff all dressed up as their favourite character from one of his books. Throughout the week there were some wonderful themed activities going on in each of the year groups including an assembly on each site led by the Site Heads. Classroom activities included descriptions of Mr and Mrs Twit, allowing the children to use their own similes and descriptive language to describe the horrible, nasty Roald Dahl characters. Drama activities were also evident, where pupils enjoyed acting out scenes from Roald Dahl books and reading lots of stories and poems, showing that books can bring us all together. And finally, what every child was waiting for….Dressing Up Day! Under grey, but mercifully rain free skies, several Charlie Buckets, Witches and Oompa Loompas could be found racing around the playground with Grandpa Joe, Violet Beauregarde and several Matildas. We even had some scrumptious Miss Honeys and bold Miss Trunchbulls from the teachers too! Our thanks to all the teachers who helped make this such a special week at Highclare. It was a fantastic week, enjoyed by everyone.

Highclare pupil features in Junior Bake Off on CBBC Congratulations to Rosie Deacon in J6 who has taken part in the Junior Bake Off heats on CBBC. She enjoyed meeting last year’s Great British Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain in ‘the tent,’ and said that she is as nice in real life as she is on TV. Rosie baked for her and fellow judge Allegra McEvedy in the show which is hosted by Sam Nixon and Mark Rhodes. We are all very proud of Rosie so to celebrate her success J6 hosted afternoon tea in her honour whilst watching her TV debut.

J3 Harvest Assembly A highlight of the term for J3P was preparing to present their Harvest Assembly to parents. The theme was Giving Thanks. The children told the story of a group of argumentative birds, including tactless turkeys, clumsy chickens, grumpy geese and feisty pheasants, who managed to overcome their differences by working together, embodying the spirit of harvest. They then supported a group of vegetables in their efforts to present a fashion show! The children acted and sang with great aplomb and the audience agreed that the performance was a tremendous success.

J3 Science Children in J3 have been learning about different types of rocks this term. They have studied different rocks under a microscope and have described their properties. The children have enjoyed carrying out a variety of experiments testing different ideas. Bruce Durrant brought in a box containing his special collection of rocks, precious stones, fossils and shells. The class were fascinated and thoroughly enjoyed listening to him share his knowledge with them.

J4 Science and Sound In their science lessons, J4 children have been learning how sound is made and how pitch and volume can be changed in a variety of musical instruments. J4P performed an excellent assembly showing parents, staff and pupils all that they have learned about Sound during science this term. With superb acting skills, they showed the problems caused by having noisy neighbours and re-told the story of King Midas and his donkey ears. The highlights of the assembly were the children’s performance of the poem The Sound Collector and their energetic, enthusiastic and informative sound songs.

Material World The children in J5 have started their new science topic, Material World, by investigating the properties of materials. They devised their own experiments to test a selection of materials for magnetism, hardness, transparency, flexibility and permeability.

BBC Live Science lesson J5 took part in a live science lesson, hosted by the BBC as an introduction to their Terrific Scientific nationwide campaign. The lesson, based on electricity, was streamed live over the internet to schools around the country. During the lesson, the children found out how an electric current travels around a circuit and which materials are good at conducting electricity. The children also discovered what it takes to be a ‘terrific scientist’. J5 is now looking forward to getting involved in the next phase of the campaign when they will have the opportunity to put all their scientific knowledge to the test and carry out investigations, inputting and sharing their results with others around the country.

J5 Bonfire Night Collages Pupils in J5 at Highclare Woodfield have been displaying their creative skills by producing fantastic bonfire pictures in an art lesson. The pupils used a range of materials and media including twigs from the playground, coloured paper, chalks and glitter to produce their bonfire night collages.

J6 visit the Houses of Parliament J6 children from Highclare St Paul’s have visited the Houses of Parliament. They were able to watch a debate in the House of Lords on how Brexit may affect funding for scientific research. In the House of Commons they heard Liz Truss MP lead the debate on prison reform. The children agreed that it was a fantastic experience.

J6 explain it! In the Juniors there is a focus on processing and understanding mathematical methods. With this in mind, J6R watched silent videos showing methods to multiply 2 or 3 digit numbers together. In groups, they tried to work out how each method worked and wrote a script to explain it simply. Following that, they used iPads to film themselves explaining the methods clearly. That was the most fun, as they even got to write on the desks!

Infants Dentist visit in Reception Class During our topic about Ourselves, we learned about our bodies and how to be healthy. Mrs BirchKapur came to visit our class. She is a dentist and came to teach us about looking after our teeth. It was great fun because Mrs Birch-Kapur brought all sorts of dentist things for us to try. We looked into each other’s mouths to count our teeth. Mrs Birch-Kapur demonstrated how to clean teeth properly. Next we tried cleaning some big plastic teeth with the special toothbrushes. The last challenge was to sort food into two groups: good for teeth and bad for teeth. Mrs Birch-Kapur gave us a super goodie bag each with toothpaste, a toothbrush and a sticker chart to record our tooth brushing at home. So expect to see Reception sporting nice shiny smiles.

Languages Day in Reception The children in Reception had lots of fun on European Languages Day. They talked about what a language is and learned the song Hello to All the Children of the World. Reception’s country was Denmark. They learned about Denmark’s flag which is called Dannebro. The class also talked about things which come from Denmark. Everyone knew about Lego and Legoland. The children all made a hat which sported the Dannebro flag, as seen in the photograph. To end the day the children sang and danced to the Danish song, Jeg gik mig over sø og land, which means ‘I walked me over sea and land.’

J1R had a wonderful time at Weston Park. The children enjoyed learning about Victorian children and playing with Victorian toys. The rocking horse was a particular favourite! Each child dressed up as a Victorian person, and they even mastered a bow or curtsy. There were some very disappointed faces when it was time to take the costumes off. In the afternoon the children made a traditional cup and ball toy and had great fun trying to catch the ball in the cup. These are now proudly displayed in the J1 classroom. Before leaving, the children played outside in the playground with many different Victorian outdoor toys such as hoops and hobby horses. We returned to school with exhausted but very happy children.

J1 Design Technology J1P designed and made sliding mechanisms as part of their Design and Technology project on Exploring Moving Books. They also learned about levers, sliders, pivots and wheels as well as the push and pull of directional forces.

J2 visit Whittington Barracks Children in J2 visited Whittington Barracks in Staffordshire to launch their topic on War and Remembrance. They were met by Bill who was dressed in full WW1 soldiers’ uniform. The children learned about Robert Keal Powell of the Staffordshire Regiment and enjoyed looking at artefacts and letters that he had written home. Before leaving the barracks J2 spent time in the WW1 trenches, complete with the sound of gunfire. It was an incredible learning experience.

Experiences of a WW2 Evacuee J2R were delighted when a former Highclare School teacher, Mrs Agnew, returned to talk to them about her experiences as an evacuee in the war. She told the children about her journey from Liverpool to Glasgow, and her experiences in an air raid shelter. Mrs Agnew was very impressed with J2’s subject knowledge of War and Remembrance and with their insightful questions.

J2 study the world around them In their Geography topic ‘What is there around me?’ J2 have been very busy creating maps and plans of our locality. Recently in Maths J2 have studied angles, making a rightangled monster to help them identify shapes that had right angles in the classrooms. They also learned about acute and obtuse angles.

Pre-School News The children in Pre-School 1 have been learning about good behaviour and following rules. They have created a sunshine tree to celebrate being kind and friendly, sharing and turn taking and being sensible and helpful. Later in the term the children made ‘Firework’ hats using pipe cleaners and tissue paper as part of their Celebrations topic.

Pre-School 2 children settled in to their new classes very quickly and enjoyed the fine autumn weather. During a beautiful, sunny autumn week Pre-School 2 ventured out into the wilds! Wearing waterproofs and wellington boots all pupils were encouraged to take part in many outdoor activities from making mud pies in the kitchen, searching for hidden gold coins and painting trunks of trees to a bug hunt and den building for us as well as a tiny squirrel, owl, mouse and hedgehog. The day was full of exploration and concluded with a visit to the playground where the local ducks watched us play and climb. Maths in Pre-School can be so much fun when you take it outside. The Bees and the Butterflies wore suitable clothing and explored the outdoor environment looking for examples of the 2 dimensional shapes which they had found on the Interactive whiteboard.

Junior School Sports News Highclare Juniors have enjoyed a very busy term playing a host of hockey and football matches. It has been wonderful to play so many different schools at varying age groups and to be able to host them at our new Highclare Sports Field. Children, parents and opposing teams have all been impressed by the facility we have acquired as a school. In football, the teams have played some very exciting matches. The recent ISA Midlands 5-a-side at both U11 and U9 saw both teams progress to the semi-final and final respectively. Highclare teams play with flair, passion and pride and it is wonderful to see the school represented in this positive manner. This term also saw all of Year 6 participate in hockey and football matches as 4 teams played Lichfield Cathedral School. It was gratifying that we could be both competitive and inclusive in sport, the blueprint for all fixtures. Swimming has also featured prominently with our children competing in the Midlands ISA gala and two teams from years 3-6 visiting Ratcliffe College. We have many strong swimmers at Highclare embodying how great individual efforts make for a great team. This was a wonderful opportunity for experienced and less experienced swimmers to compete in a very close and competitive gala crammed with races. The scoring reflected the close nature of the contest and we are delighted that Highclare won the event with132 points to 117 with a fantastic display of technique and determination. It was a great team effort by all and a very enjoyable occasion. The gala was also well supported by Highclare parents who helped produce a lovely atmosphere poolside.

FA Girls’ Football Week Nine of the year eight girls took part in this month’s FA Girls’ Football Week, along with 60,000 other students across the country, in fixtures created to give girls and women more opportunities to play the game. Bishop Walsh hosted the KS3 tournament on a chilly and wet Wednesday afternoon. Highclare faced the tournament winners first and conceded a narrow 2-1 defeat, however an excellent goalkeeper pairing of Olivia Keene and Scarlett Dunne meant Highclare could push their defensive line forward in the following games and drew 0-0 with North Birmingham Academy, beat John Wilmott 2-1 and drew 1-1 with Bishop Walsh. Excellent goals from Jess Davies and Olivia Keene highlighted a brilliant afternoon for the girls who showed great energy and team work, and a 3rd place finish. Rugby U15 Friendly Match v George's School (Nov 2016) A class performance from the U15 rugby team against St George's School! A brilliant team effort earning Highclare a convincing win, well done boys! Result: Highclare 38 - St George's 22 U16 Friendly Match v St George's School (Nov 2016) A tough fixture for our U16 rugby team against St George's School, Edgbaston. It was a highly competitive match with a lot of great tackles. Unfortunately St George's had that little more desire and took full control of the match in the second half.

Christmas Ensemble Concert Highclare Junior and Senior choirs and ensembles performed in a fantastic evening of musical delight to celebrate Christmas at the end of term. The evening was enjoyed by a packed hall of parents, teachers and friends and included many of their favourite songs and performances. A prelude to the Carol Service at St Michael’s Church in the last week of term, this really enhanced the Christmas atmosphere and showcased many talented musicians.

Highclare Choirs bring Christmas songs to Gracechurch Pupils from Highclare’s Junior and Senior Schools helped to create a Christmas atmosphere in the Gracechurch Shopping Centre and entertained shoppers by singing their favourite carols. Shoppers joined in too with Once in Royal David City and a firm favourite We wish you a Merry Christmas. The school collected donations for its charity, African Space Trust, a small charity that specifically helps children in Africa by providing teaching equipment and medical facilities. A big thank you to everyone who donated.
