Academic Pathways – Pre-A Level

About Pre-A Levels

• This is an introductory course for those who aren’t quite ready to study on an A Level or Foundation course. It offers students the opportunity to study and improve their English whilst doing some academic preparation. All students will study Maths and can also choose from science, business or art depending on their preference.

• There are 3 Pathways available. Students can choose the following options (pick 2 subjects from each pathway)

• Art (Fine Art, Textiles, and Photography)

• Business (Business Studies and Economics)

• Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics)

• Students can progress to our A Level and Foundation courses via our internal tests. This means that it is less pressurised than a GCSE course.

• Students will take 3-4 GCSE subjects' national exams.

Plus 2 of the options below (each option is 4 hours)

Students must be 15 years old at the start of the course. Minimum IELTS 4.5 for September course and 5.0 for January intake (internal test available)

Course Content

Academic Pathways – Pre-IB

About Pre-IB

• This is an introductory course for those who aren’t quite ready to study on an A Level, IB Diploma or Foundation course. It offers students the opportunity to study and improve their English whilst doing some academic preparation. All students will study Maths and can also choose from science, business or art depending on their preference.

• You will study 6 subject areas plus Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS), Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and the extended essay. You can choose subjects from the three 3 Pathways shown below. Art (Fine Art, Textiles, and Photography)

• Business (Business Studies and Economics)

• Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics)

• You will also be able to study your native language and several others including German, Russian and Chinese.

• Students can progress to our A Level and Foundation courses or to the IB Diploma at a sister or partner school.

• Students will take 6 - 7 GCSE subjects' national exams.

Academic Pathways – 1 Year GCSE

• Students will complete 6 GCSEs with each subject having 4 hours per week

• Students will have an additional 3 hours of English for academic purposes, and 2 hours of sport.

• Students will choose 4 subjects from the following:

• Business, Economics, Fine Art, Photography, Biology, Chemistry, Physics,

• Latin, Native Language (if available)

• English Language GCSE and Mathematics GCSE are compulsory subjects

• IELTS - September (IELTS 5.0) or January (IELTS 5.5) intake

About A Levels

• A Levels are the traditional route to university for UK students. Accepted by all universities worldwide

• Accepted qualification for Medicine

• Explore three or four subjects in-depth over two-year or 18-month period

• Ideal for students with academic and inquisitive minds who enjoy studying and perform well in exams

• Excellent standard in preparation for university

• Small classes - six or seven students per group

• Wider choice of subject options

• You must choose to study A Levels if you are aiming for a G5 university or medical school

• 2-Year, 18-month and 1-Year A-levels available

Academic Pathways – University Foundation

About Foundation Courses

• A fast and cost-effective route to university for students aged over 16.5 years. 9 months (September start) or 6 months (January start) to complete.

• Foundation courses are often designed with international students in mind and will always include language support such as IELTS and EAP

• Students who have not succeeded at A Levels can sometimes be successful on a Foundation course

• Foundation courses are accepted by most universities but are not accepted by Cambridge, Oxford, LSE, Imperial or UCL. If you are hoping to apply for those universities, you should study A Levels

• Over 80% of the Russell group universities accept foundation courses.

• Accredited by NCFE and internally assessed.

• The tutor will check progress in IELTS. It is expected that students will improve by 0.5 per term with emphasis on writing skills as these are required for university

• Monday to Friday, lunch is served 12.00 - 13.00 pm.

• The lunch offering includes soup of the day, main course/vegetarian option, dessert & fresh fruit.

• Dinner is served 17.00 - 19.00 pm and offers a main course/vegetarian option, sides, salad bar and dessert.

• Weekends include a brunch offering, “take away style” food on Saturdays and traditional roast dinners on Sundays.

Student Profile

Jeremy from Malaysia studied A Levels at St Andrews. He studied A Levels in Physics, Chemistry and Biology and achieved 3 A* grades and is now studying Medicine at the University of Leicester.

Whilst at St Andrew’s, Jeremy took part in the enrichment and extension programme in order to support his application to study medicine. He worked alongside Cambridge University Tutors and received support in writing his personal statement, preparation for the UKAT exam and mock university interviews.

Student Profile

Carolina from Brazil studied A Levels at St Andrews graduating with A*A*A. She is now studying Physics with Theoretical Physics at Imperial College, London .

Carolina has just been chosen to become an intern at CERN in Switzerland out of 7000 applicants. Physicists and engineers at CERN use the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments such as purpose-built particle accelerators and detectors to study the basic constituents of matter.

Alumni Student Profile

Ngoc Han (Hannah) from Vietnam studied University Business Foundation graduating with Distinction with Honours and 8.5 in IELTS. She went onto study International Relations at King’s College, London.

She was the top student at KCL deservedly winning prizes and scholarships. Hannah will commence her Masters at LSE in September 2021 and her ultimate goal is to work at the United Nations upon graduation.

Hannah is always more than happy to share her experience at St. Andrew's College Cambridge with other students. She also helps the college by attending international education fairs in Vietnam to talk to prospective students about her experience.

Entrance Requirements

• 1-Year Pre A-level: at least 15 years old, English level 4 for Sept and 4.5 for Jan intake

• 1-Year GCSE: at least 15 years old, English level 5 for Sept and 5.5 for Jan intake

• A-level: at least 16 years old, English level 5 for Sept (2-Year) and 5.5 for Jan (18month) intake

• University Foundation: at least 17 years old, English level 5 for Sept (9-month) and 5.5 for Jan (6- month) intake

• All courses have September & January intakes.

• All students are required to take the internal admissions test. Students who study Foundation need to submit

• UKVI Academic IELTS for visa purposes.

Admission Procedures

• Passport copy + birth certificate + transcript records within past 2 years + registration form

• Pay a non-refundable 420GBP registration fee

• Take internal test and interview (Students who are below 18 years old qualifying for the Child Student visa could take the 50 mins online test). For students above 18 years old and students who study University Foundation course, they need to submit UKVI IELTS for visa purpose

• Pay a 2,500GBP deposit to confirm place (refundable after the student has completed the course)

• First term’s fees or annual fees before the CAS is issued

• College assists with airport transfer and student arrival

• Students under 18 provide guardianship information before arrival

Fees - Boarding Option

• Fees can be paid by term and divided into 3 times per year or paid in full for the year.

• First term’s fees are required before CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies) is issued.

• “Full boarding” means including tuition fee, accommodation and 3 meals each day.

• A house parent lives onsite in each of the halls and a school nurse is available Monday to Friday at the medical centre.

• Price difference is from the room rate difference (twin ensuite, single ensuite, premium single ensuite)

Scholarships

• Scholarship requirements:

• 10% off tuition fees - IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.0, Transcript A/A*, Internal & Scholarship tests & Interview 20% off tuition fees - IELTS 7.0 with no band below 6.5, Transcript A/A*, Internal & Scholarship tests & Interview 35% off tuition fees - IELTS 7.5 with no band below 7.0, Transcript A/A*, Internal & Scholarship tests & Interview Scholarship policy applies to Pre-A, A-level and Foundation courses both September and January intake.

• Scholarship will be offered to the student during the whole duration of study with St. Andrew's. However, scholarship will be reviewed annually and are subject to good academic performance and behaviour. To obtain a continuation of the scholarship a student would need at least 2 As in the first year of A Level or at least 4 grade 9s at GCSE and an attendance level of at least 95% in all subjects.

• Students below the age of 18 can choose to take our English entry tests, based on similar criteria to IELTS, to be eligible for both a place and/or a scholarship. Students who are above 18 or who study the Foundation course must present a UKVI IELTS certificate for the visa purpose.
