The Course
On average... 100% of students thought their English had improved. 98% would recommend the course to their friends. 98% said the excursions were excellent.
The Stonyhurst Language School offers two or four week residential English language courses for boys and girls aged 10–16 years. The English course is designed to be an interesting, enjoyable and beneficial way of helping our students improve their language skills. As far as we are able, the teaching groups are split into ‘young juniors’ (10–12 year olds) and ‘juniors’ (13–16 year olds). Students are taught at 5 levels ranging from Elementary to Advanced. All students receive 23 hours of tuition a week, as well as 3 periods of supervised homework (45 minutes). We guarantee small classes, no more than 12, enabling us to give individual attention. Students are assessed at the start of the course and placed in a class appropriate to their age and their level of English proficiency. At the end of the course, there will be a progress report and students will receive a certificate at an awards ceremony. Cambridge Exams preparing for PET, FCE and CAE lessons (optional) Following the success of our ‘preparing for FCE’ lessons last year, in 2017 we are pleased to offer preparatory classes in the 3 main Cambridge English examinations. This does not include the exam itself, but our experienced teachers will guide the students in strategies to pass the exams at a later date, (only open to students who have a sufficient level of English).
with our skilled and capable activities staff to give your children a fun and meaningful learning holiday.
Food We have a modern dining area where there is always a great selection of meals to choose from. We also cater for students with allergies, food intolerances and those with special diets. Attendance at meal times is compulsory and all staff and students eat their meals together.
Accommodation All the accommodation used by the Language School is of high quality and is in single or twin bedded rooms.
Student Welfare/Healthcare We place student welfare at the top of our priorities. A very low student to staff ratio ensures that we can give the children constant personal care and attention. We have a Director of Pastoral Care and House Parents, who make sure that all the children’s needs are met all through the day and night. Pastoral care is extremely important to us, and each student receives individual attention so enabling all our students to have a fun, relaxing and safe experience. We offer a daily surgery where a qualified nurse will be in attendance together with qualified first aiders on site. In addition we are within easy reach of two minor injury drop in centres, several hospitals, a local health centre and dentist.
Staff Stonyhurst directly employ all of our summer school staff. We are fully committed to the enjoyment, education and well-being of every student in our care. All our teachers are qualified to teach English as a second language and they work hand in hand

Language School
Special Afternoon Lesson Options In these 90 minute afternoon classes, all students can choose from a variety of subject options. The aim of these lessons is for students to use English while taking part in a fun task or activity in which they have an interest. These lesson options could include: guided visits around the College museum; practical lectures from the on-site Observatory and weather station; hands-on lessons at the Learners’ Garden in the grounds of the College; debating; dance; music; drama; film/journalism; business English; and other fun projects.
The Observatory Here we introduce students to a unique facility at the College, the Observatory, which was built in 1866. This working observatory contains a weather station where readings are still taken to provide one of the oldest continuous daily weather records in the world. Lessons are given in the Observatory where students are shown the instruments which allow us to view the cosmos and learn intriguing facts about astronomy.
The Learners’ Garden This is a working garden full of flower beds and horticultural plots where students can learn about where our food comes from, and how to look after the flora and fauna in this beautiful rural setting.
The Stonyhurst Collection Stonyhurst College is blessed with an aweinspiring collection of antiquities and artefacts which have been donated to the school from former pupils and associates of the College since the sixteenth century.
I liked that we could learn English and have fun at the same time. Sofia (Italy)
Mass Students have the opportunity to attend Sunday Mass.
