Language School 2018

Welcome Stonyhurst College famous for its connections to authors Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (Sherlock Holmes) and J R R Tolkien (Lord of the Rings), is a co-educational boarding and day school set in 2,500 acres of Britain’s most beautiful countryside. Founded in 1593, the College has been welcoming and educating students from around the world for over 400 years.

The Course We offer 2 or 4 week residential English Language courses for boys and girls aged 10–16 years. (Limited 3 week places available). The English course is designed to be an interesting, enjoyable and effective way of helping our students improve their language skills. As far as we are able, young juniors (10–13 years) and juniors (14–16 years) are taught separately. Students are assessed at the start of the course and placed in a class appropriate to their age and English level, (Elementary to Advanced). All students will receive 23 hours of English tuition a week, as well as 2 periods of homework of 45 minutes each. On one afternoon each week there will be an English ‘clinic’ where students may discuss their learning strategies and any English language problems they may have with the Director of Studies. We guarantee small classes of no more than 12 students per class, enabling us to give closer attention to all students. At the end of the course, there will be a progress report and students will receive a certificate at an awards ceremony, where students are not only awarded for their academic achievements, but also their sporting success.

Accommodation, Welfare & Course Dates Accommodation

Food

All the accommodation used by the Language School is of high quality and is in single, twin or dormitory style bedrooms.

We have a modern dining area where there is always a great selection of meals to choose from. We also cater for students with allergies, food intolerances and those with special diets. Attendance at meal times is compulsory and all staff and students eat their meals together.

Student Welfare/ Healthcare We place student welfare at the top of our priorities. A very low student to staff ratio ensures that we can give the children constant personal care and attention. We have a Director of Pastoral Care and House Parents, who make sure that all the children’s needs are met all through the day and night. Pastoral care is extremely important to us, and each student receives individual attention so enabling all our students to have a fun, relaxing and safe experience. We offer a daily surgery where a qualified nurse will be in attendance together with qualified first aiders on site. In addition we are within easy reach of two minor injury drop in centres, several hospitals, a local health centre and dentist.

Staff Stonyhurst directly employ all of our summer school staff. We are fully committed to the enjoyment, education and well-being of every student in our care. All our teachers are qualified to teach English as a second language and they work hand in hand with our skilled and capable activities staff to give your children a fun and meaningful learning holiday.

The food is excellent. Luc (France)
