Top 12 UI/UX Design Blunders To Avoid www.innopplinc.com | (310) 279 6584
Design block happens to everyone. Everyone has a history of bad design concepts that does not yield the required ROI. I compiled this list with the help of our in-house mobile app developers, testers and designers, to understand how design impacts the overall product.
Design A Non Responsive websites Well the standards have changed and most designers have moved on to being fully responsive. But, half the websites online seem to be using the traditional methodology. Lets talk metrics, 60% of the US adults use their smart devices to go online, if you are not responsive then you lose them. SIMPLE!
Confusing UI To UX - A Common Mistake
With the trends shifting to a user conscious design, the UX part of the design has gained importance in the past few years. Most designers feel that when they focus on UI, the UX automatically falls into place. That is one of the biggest misconceptions as the UI is a user interface that deals with making the website more efficient and UX is user experience that deals with the overall user experience. A website should be efficient and give the user the feel to pique their interest and get them involved.
Keep It Simple – Don’t Over DO It!
It happens to every designer – I have done it too (plenty of times.. Until someone HAD to stop me). Design works only when it’s used in the right proportion. At times, we tend to implement more elements than necessary and make the website too much for users to digest. We must stick to the basic mantra - ‘Simple UI paired with a pleasant UX’ as it’s the only way user stick to your site.
Forms With Many Fields Users are lazy and don’t like to impart with too much of information about themselves, for no reason. If your form is requesting details other than their name and email address, expect them to run away and not look back. As a designer, it’s necessary to understand users. If you intimidate them in the entry level, you will never hear from them again.
Unclear CTAs
Call to actions are an important element of a site’s success. It lets you navigate users the way you want them to, when implemented right. Going overboard with CTAs will prove useless, as it might irritate users and make them leave. Brainstorm and implement the trial and error methodology to understand users better. Plan to place your CTA for maximum ROI.
Not Trusting Your Instincts
Design is all about psychology. Basically, a designer’s work is sent for a number of iterations before it’s finalized. As a designer, you need to make your deciding authorities understand the theme and the structure of the design. It’s important that everyone is on the same page when the design goes live.
Not Staying Updated On Design Trends Design trends change all the time, it’s essential to stay updated and incorporate the latest concepts into the site. When your website is outdated, you might not only lose user’s confidence, but lose out on the opportunity to engage them better and generate better leads.
Make User Sign Up For Nothing
I really can’t stand it when websites ask me to sign-up to to access their basic content. It’s mainly cause once I sign up, there is nothing of value. I not only leave, but will never revisit them, ever again. There is nothing as bad as irritating potential customers. This concept might work well for a journal publication which has plenty of valuable data that they can’t give away for free. So if your business model proposed otherwise, then do not abide by this process.
Inconsistent Work
A website should have a proper standard where the title should enforce H1 tags, the subsequent subtitles should hold H2 tags and so on. Also, the font style and size should remain consistent throughout the website. This enforces a proper standard to make users understand and differentiate your content to navigate around the website, efficiently.
Using A Non-Standardized Design Elements There are certain standards all designers should abide by. It’s not only sufficient that your website is all pretty, but users should understand each and every element to make navigation simple with good UX. Designing a non-standardized menu can only confuse users and increase their bounce rate.
Give A Cluster Of Information With No Breathing Space
In order to give maximum information to users, designers tend to overdo. But, readers crave some breathing space and love the white area of the site. Minimalist design is what users appreciate and when they come across a cluster of information, it only creates a negative impact.
Letting Users Wonder What’s Happening
Sometimes when a user’s click on a download link, they just keep looking at the same screen, unaware of what’s happening behind the scene. Providing some indication helps users realize that the particular download is in process. If you leave them clueless, there just leave. These are the commonly made mistakes by many designers, even the experienced one. Hope this list shed some light on the major design blunders and pave way for a better UI and UX.
