The psoas major attaches from as high up as the 12th thoracic vertebrae. Inside the pelvis it joins with the illiacus to wrap around the front of the pelvis and insert onto the lesser trochanter of the femur. The rectus femoris is also under considerable stretch.

If the pelvis is maintained in the correct neutral position, the hamstrings will be stretched strongly. Their origins are underneath the pelvis and located posteriorly.

Variation

The traditional “dancers front split” has the rear leg externally rotated. In addition, the low back is hyperextended. This enables the ligaments of the hip to be slackened and a fuller, more complete looking split position to be achieved. The stretch in the rear leg diminishes in the hip flexors and is more focused on the adductors.

For a fuller discussion of the front splits, refer to our online workshop titled “The Splits”, or to “Innovations in Pilates, Therapeutic Muscle Stretching on the Pilates Reformer”.
