Extension Thoracic spine extension occurs in the sagittal plane and is particularly limited. Achieving end range motion of the shoulder girdle also depends on adequate extension of the thoracic spine. Consequently, observation and measurement of thoracic spine extension ability is an important part of the ROMA. Surprisingly though, few studies have examined the global and regional mobility of the thoracic spine in vivo i.e. in the living organism. Kapandji notes that “there is no agreement among authors regarding the range of movement at various levels of the spine.�
