THE [LAB]RARY PUBLIC LIBRARY [ of a future ]
DESIGN CONCEPT
The project aims to position the library at the forefront of education and learning. The library has always served as more of an archive, a collection of knowledge and information. The future of the library focuses on the argument that this new library acts as a testing ground for learning. The [LAB]rary creates a tangible response to the issues of space, mechanics, tools, and materials. In Oakland, there is a lack of this shared collective resource that fosters creativity and curiosity while simultaneously providing the means to pursue this desire for creation. In this envisioned response to the [future] library, information becomes the primary driver for the design; ultimately, the generaton, application, and collection of information becomes a cycle that is the future of a library.

THE LAB [ Phase 2 ] PUBLIC LIBRARY [ of a future ]
DESIGN CONCEPT
The library has since been a testament to the knowledge we’ve accumulated throughout history. With a vast collection of books and journals from any and every topic, this archive is a temple of learning. With the advancement of technology we’ve relied less and less on books and have since let digital mediums to take place. Technology has since beenthe driving force in education. The way we learn and take in information has continued to adapt to the advancement of technology. I believe the future of a library acts as a platform for education to leap forward. taking every chance to be at the forefront of technology and adapting it for education. This testing ground allows for an involved learning environment taking education outside the classroom and beyond the pages of a book. Cal Poly SLO | Winter 2019

THE LAB [ Phase 1 ] PUBLIC LIBRARY [ of a future ]
PROGRAM The program was an early design driver. Envisioning key elements of a future library led to a programmatic prograssion of space. The main idea behind the stacked program was to allow a separation of spaces based on level activity. The Lab was active and loud, while on the other end of the spectrum The Reading Room was a lot more calm. The Studio became a buffer for the program and separated the contrasting elements.
VISUAL CONNECTION The concept of visual connection is established through a combination of program and articulation.
ROOF ARTICULATION Activatingthe roof plane plays a vital role in the overall spatial experience of the architecture. It is a simple cascading sawtooth roof that transitions into a sloped roof plane.
The stacked program not only acts as a programmatic buffer, but it also reinforces that connection that is vital to the concept. MODULE
