For the love of Architecture and everything it stands for. Its ability to directly aect change in the built environment. To dignify occupants, and create a positive atmosphere. I think a life welll designed is a life well lived. Life is meant to have purpose, why settle for mediocracy.

UNITY THROUGH ARCHITECTURE

Cal Poly Slo - Design Village 2017 | Rhinoceros | CNC Concept One of the driving principles was to see oneself as part of an entirety. Architecture manifests opportunities for connection and develops spaces for interaction. A radial form visually sets an evident sense of connection and a symbolic presence of unity. This idea is carried out through various stages in the design. First being in the the form of a systematic use of ribs that dynamically revolve forming the Mobius strip. Platforms are clustered and unified creating independent pieces to a whole. An even more unified method of construction was also

implemented. Eliminating the use of fasteners and hardware. The use of joinery and carefully placed notches give the structure it’s rigidity. Overall the idealistic unity found in architecture is translated to tangible elements of design and fabrication.

Software - Rhino | CNC The model and diagrams were all completed in Rhino. I also used Rhino to prepare the CNC cut file using the same 1:1 dimensions i used to create the 3D model.

PLAY

ARCHITECTURE IN MOTION

Arch A115 Design/Theory 1 | Manual Concept Play is an attempt to create an architectural piece that, although uses rigid and rectilinear pieces, seems to articulate a sense of motion. The overall form is an eclipse that is transformed to create waves in the form of walls. Constructing this piece was achieved by stitching individual pieces of straw together. Dynamic spaces were achieved through the introduction of

light into the spaces. The transparency of the straws produced dierent lighting conditions.

Software No software was used in this project and the entirety of the project was done through sketching and careful manipulation of materials.

Criteria

Houston, TX is constantly ravaged by floods and since april of 2016 it has seen 3 dozen major floods. With Houston’s ever growing population and decreasing number of wetlands, floods show no sign of stopping soon. However, locals have built their lives around this major city and relocating just doesn’t seem like a viable option for most.

I used Rhinoceros to create a basic massing study. I created basic clay renders from just applying a light cream color to the objects to create some shadows that provided depth to the images. I used photoshop for a basic background to separate the design.

One of the main design objectives is to provide an alternative design for future residents of Houston or current residents who have been ravaged by floods.

Solutions Solar panels Operable louvers

Eco coolers Floating raft

Buoyancy 1g = 4kg 55 gallon container = 6 sq ft 55 g x 4kg = 220 kg = 484 lbs Avg weight of a house = 50lbs/sq ft 6 sq Area x 50lbs = 300 lbs

Part of the objective was to design around a specific set of components for a house. Future homes would have a new floating platform as a base, a south facing eco cooler wall and solar panels. Additional requirements like operable louvers would be adjusted to site specific conditions.

Solar panels are south facing and angled between 20-30° for direct sunlight throughout the Spring, Summer, and Fall seasons.

East Elevation Eco coolers claim to decrease indoor room temperature of up to 5° celsius. Positioned at the south side of the house for optimal wind.

Helmers Street

De Boll Street

Operable louvers provide necessary shade from direct sunlight on the east and west side, where there are full height windows, while still maintaining visibility.

A floating raft from recycled water drums allow the platform to float in the prescence of a flood. Steel posts on concrete caissons provide a track for the platform to follow.

COMMUNITY LIVING

Arch A230H Design/Theory 3 | Rhinoceros | Photoshop Concept Old Towne Orange has always had its historic appeal. However, it has since struggled to keep up with the times. With the addition of Chapman University, the demographics in Orange has aged less through the years. Co-living presents an opportunity to stitch together a community. The idea behind the project is to promote a sense of community by creating opportunities for interaction and enhancing visual connections. Staying away from typical apartment design, residents pass through public spaces open to the community to access private facilities. This strengthens the visual connections needed to establish a relationship with a community.

Semi-private greenspaces are found within the residential clusters to bring residents out of their homes and engage in the community.

Software - Rhino | Photoshop I used Rhinoceros to create the overall 3d model and basic massing diagrams. I created basic clay renders from just applying a light cream color to the objects to create some shadows that provided depth to the images. I used photoshop for a basic collage style visualization with some basic materials added.

Housing Concept The idea is to break the traditional grid-like architectural typology. Units start out as following the basic grid pattern and then overlayed to reduce the overall building footprint. The goal was to increase the amount of greenspace that is usually achieved with just stacking the unts. Creating dierent osets allow for decks on the second level, connecting and stitching the units together.

Evolution of Form The massing study done to achieve the overall form of the facility was derived from how the site interacted with the existing conditions found in the area. Chapman university, which had facilities scattered all over, was one of the primary forces in aecting the architecture in order to achieve an engaging facility that allowed both students and residents to interact.
