Think easy, accessible and practical when you are making your top picks this season. To help those in winter fashion strife, I have compiled an exclusive list of trends fit for any wardrobe. Here are four stars for winter outfit inspiration, from statement coats to knee high boots and turtleneck sweaters. Winter White Sweater White sweaters are all the rage this season because of its versatility and feminine look. Suitable for almost any ensemble, pair your white sweater with skinny blue jeans and boots or sneakers. Up-style the look with a multi coloured clutch or statement watch for a pop of colour. Knee Length Coat The knee length coat is the perfect addition to your winter wardrobe. Deemed the LBD of the season, a knee length coat adds a chic and classic finish to even the simplest of outfits. The most versatile colours to opt for are black or brown for everyday wear. If you are looking for a more statement coat, I recommend going for bright red or blue. Knee High Boots I can’t say it enough- I am head over heels for knee high boots! This gem will be your staple accessory

this winter. Go for a black comfy-chic flat that is stylish and most importantly comfortable for everyday use. Forget a high heel because flat knee high boots can edge up an outfit of a simple top and jeans or help add definition to a pencil-skirt ensemble for the office. A guarantee go-to all season. Chunky Turtleneck Sweater This classic look is back in full swing and will keep you warm during the cold months. I recommend opting for a black turtle neck, keep the fitting loose but not baggy and pair it with skinnies or a skirt with ankle boots. Skinny jeans not your thing? Go for a thigh length sweater and pair it with legging and boots. There you have it, four great trends to keep you warm and chic this winter. Remember this season it’s all about keeping it practical and simple. Good luck!

New in-store at
HANNAHS We are thrilled to announce that Hannahs have exclusively secured the Keds range from the USA. Keds the iconic American sneaker brand established in 1916 but becoming popular after the second world war, the simple and chic design ignited a style revolution, capturing the hearts of girls everywhere from fashion icons to the girl next door. They became known as sneakers as the rubber sole meant the wearer could sneak around silently! In the Fifties Keds were associated with the classic iconic style of Audrey Hepburn, Greta Garbo, Katherine Hepburn, Marilyn Munroe and Jackie O and now they have teamed up with current style icons, Kate Spade & Taylor Swift. Keds have always chosen strong female role models as they are all about empowering young women and to this end they are running a ‘So Brave’ campaign around the concept that true bravery comes from within and that everyone has unique qualities to celebrate, their campaign is anchored around the idea of “own it” encouraging girls to live with pride and confidence. They believe in empowering young women to live a brave life by
being true to themselves and following their dreams. Hence Taylor Swift is a great brand ambassador for Keds, as she is the epitome of a young woman prepared to live her dream and believe in herself, she sums this up perfectly in her quote: “Maybe you’re not meant to fit in, maybe you’re supposed to stand out”. She encourages girls to experiment with their own style and sees shoes as a great opportunity to add a pop of colour or something unexpected. Keds certainly offer the chance for that pop of colour, from the bright red, navy, black and grey single colours at the very affordable price of $69.95 through to the range of animal prints and white stacked-soled for $99.95. Taylor Swift for Keds range is full of cute prints such as berries, hearts, florals, cherry blossoms or anchors all complete with her signature on the inside of the shoe at only $79.95. Check out the full range currently in stores or online at the Hannahs website.

DENIM
Mirrou: Denim shirt $39.90
by Angela Stone
For many stylists and designers winter is a season where fashion takes a more practical seat; we know the looks for winter need to be very wearable pieces. The good news this season is that fashion has ripped up the denim rulebook, incorporating fresh and lavish new details to classic denim looks. The blues are on winning form in the midst of an incredibly fun and adventurous fashion moment, when anything from baggy to whitewash, or high-rise, and even patchwork—goes. For every winter mood there is a jean and a style. Here are a few denim tips to keep you fashionably warm this winter. That 70’s Denim The paper-bag waist makes for a 70-esque feel with vintage hued denim characterizing the season. From faded blue to metallic inserts, don’t fear bringing a little “old school,” back to your wardrobe. The paper-bag waist works well with a tuck-in top or shirt and warm knee length coat.
months. Pair the patchwork jeans with ankle boots and golden hued jewellery for a tasteful style up. White Denim We all know denim, but are you familiar with white denim? White is slowly seeping into the fashion pages with some fashion gurus deeming it “the new black”. For those of you who want to switch in your white denim for a more casual chic look, this is the trend for you. The best look for white denim is slightly distressed baggy boyfriend jeans. Perfect for any winter ensemble! Style it up with a knitted sweater in neutral tones and a cosy hat for a classy and chic touch.

High Rise Skinny
Patchwork Denim
Make the most of your waistline with high rise jeans. The “rise,” meets skinny with this newly updated classic look. A great colour for this trend is light grey for added definition around the hip and thigh area. Finish the look with a black heel and bright coloured top for a pop of colour.
Are you bored with your regular skinny jeans? Trade your skinnies in for a patchwork look to add a fun twist to your everyday staple. Opt for a colourful patchwork print to brighten up the winter
These four trends give you a variety of denim looks to choose from. Old school paper-bag waists, patchwork to newly defined styles, the colder months have never looked more fashionably fun!

necklaces for a stylish and fashion forward finish. Some even take bold to another level by pairing chunky earrings with chunky necklaces as seen on the Marni and Louis Vuitton runways.
Sometimes chunky and shiny just isn’t enough. Today, jewellery styles are making more of a statement with a blend of colours and materials, taking all shapes and forms. While jewellery trends are ever changing, some of us want pieces that will take us through the year. If you are a cost savvy, fashion follower, these trends are for you!
If more subtle looks suit your style, knuckle rings are the way to go. The idea is to decorate your fingers with both knuckle and more classic rings for a stylish touch. Pair up gold tinted knuckle rings with darker nail colours to further accentuate your jewellery.
A current stand-out trend is the “askew” earring look. From the runways of Oscar De La Renta to Hermes, askew earrings are abuzz and taking over the jewellery scene. It is the beauty of irregularity that captures the eye, from variations in colours to shape. Bold necklaces take centre stage this year, spotted across all major runways. The best part is that it is perfect for any season! Fashion gurus are pairing up ensembles with golden hues of statement

‘Delaney Mes is a freelance food writer and cook based in Auckland. She began her food career with her blog Heartbreak Pie, which started while she was working as a lawyer in Wellington. She now lives and breathes all things food, from recipe writing, restaurant judging to tailoring menus for people’s dinner parties. She loves nothing more than talking about food over something delicious.’
Brunch, in my humble opinion, comes about as close as you can get to being the perfect meal. It’s acceptable either sweet or savoury, or even more so, as both. It can be a quick catch up with a friend and a coffee, or a long sprawled out affair with multiple courses. It’s always good to start with something sweet, and maybe baked. If you’re at home it’s a good time to experiment with recipes, but if you’re out, sharing a brioche or a scone, or a sticky bun of some sort, is always a good idea, surely! I’m big on double drinks too – of course plenty of water for the table (especially if it’s Sunday and there were a few wines the night before) but also definitely a coffee, and either a smoothie, juice, or crisp refreshing soda. Lots of great places make their own these days, and do it well. Would it be brunch without bacon? Well, for vegetarians, yes, and lucky for them, that squeaky cheese haloumi fits the bill on brunch menus. Or if you love them both, load up your plate. Fresh bread, good quality butter, some greens of some sort. Or if you’re a sweet tooth, waffles, pancakes, French toast, crumpets. It is truly a glorious time to be a brunch lover.
COFFEE Matters
It wasn’t that long ago when coffee was made by adding a teaspoon of powdered granules to a cup, and topping up with hot water. If you were out and about or at the office, maybe you had a filter machine. We’ve come a long way. As coffee quality has improved over the years, so too has café culture. Meeting up for coffee has become a totally normal part of people’s day. People have better relationships with their baristas than they do with their friends sometimes, such is the level of banter across the machine. Did you know New Zealand is ranked the 13th highest consumer of coffee in the world! MUFFIN BREAK – JAMAICA BLUE – THE COFFEE CLUB ESQUIRES COFFEE – BUTLERS CHOCOLATE CAFÉ

MOTHER’S DAY

MUM
APPLE PIE
Mother’s Day is a celebration of the everlasting bond that all mothers share with their children. A mothers selfless love is the embodiment of all feelings that one human being can have for the other. We often wish to do everything we can to express the depth of our feelings for our mothers. One way of doing so is by adding a personal touch to the preparations and to the gifts. Receiving a basket or cute reusable shopping bag, and filling it with a few of Mum’s favourite trinkets – including those of the edible variety – make for a quick and thoughtful gift. It’s hard to go past fresh flowers, her favourite book or beautiful scented diffusers. Whatever you end up doing, a little bit of planning can go a long way. And if it’s for Mother’s Day, anything with a bit of thought will make Mum’s day for sure. Kmart: Dipped mugs (set of 4) $8
