It’s a very exciting time at Sylvia Park with the arrival of two leading fashion brands. We go behind the scenes to see what makes them tick and more importantly, learn how they are contributing to sustainable fashion.
a fashionable life Four years ago my daughter was a fashion student at Massey University and part of the course was learning about sustainable fashion. She was tasked with designing clothes in a future where there were no new fabrics to be had: no cotton, no wool, no reams of polyester. At the time it seemed an unlikely scenario but how times change – and quick. Now sustainable fashion is an important player in a global revolution that means you can look good, feel good and do good. It has nothing to do with what designers we favour but everything to do with where we choose to buy our clothes. One of the biggest global fashion innovators is H&M who is leading the trend towards ethical fashion where sustainability is as important as design and desirability. Here at Sylvia Park we are committed to sustainability and are delighted they are to open their first New Zealand store here. H&M has worked with sustainability for many years to show that not only can you make fashion sustainable – but also sustainability fashionable. It’s turning rags to riches after launching a garment collecting initiative where customers have handed in more than 25,000 tonnes of unwanted clothing equivalent to almost 125 million t-shirts.
Ultimately H&M wants to move towards a 100 per cent circular business model where reused fibres from old clothes are recycled into new covetable fashion. Its philosophy is looking good should do good too. This will help keep textiles from ending up in landfills and massively reduce the need for extracting virgin resources from our planet. Till then it has set a goal that all its cotton should come from sustainable sources by 2020. H&M is already one of the biggest users of organic cotton and recycled polyester.
“
The future success of any company today, including H&M, depends, amongst other things, on long-term sustainability work and responsible process.
”
CEO Karl-Johan Persson gives his view on H&M’s progress in terms of sustainability, his opinion on sourcing from developing countries and what results have been achieved when it comes to the Fair Living Wage strategy.
While technology still limits recycling on a large scale, H&M is investing in exciting innovation ideas that are set to completely turn around how the fashion industry has been operating for decades. Further contributions towards a sustainable fashion industry include its long-term strategy towards fair living wages and to strengthen rights for all H&M workers throughout their supply chain. The agreement will cover and secure rights of 1.6 million garment workers in 1,900 factories.
H&M conscious stands for everything we do in the name of a more sustainable fashion future. It’s a mission built on passion, long-term thinking and teamwork.

dressed for success ZARA is a Spanish clothes and accessories brand, the flagship brand of the Inditex group. It is the largest retailer in the world thanks to the vision of its founder, Amancio Ortega, who has created a fashion phenomena by selling high quality, up-to-the-minute fashion at an affordable price. ZARA has flagship stores on Fifth Avenue in New York, Oxford Street in London, Calle Serrano in Madrid, Via del Corso in Rome, Champs-Élysées in Paris and Myeongdong in Seoul, amongst many others. Its first New Zealand store here at Sylvia Park is soon to join that illustrious list. Today, ZARA has close to 90 markets, with over 2100 stores around the world. Sylvia Park’s parent company, Kiwi Property, has invested $11.5 million to create ZARA’s new store in an eight-month development programme. “The new site, located in the heart of Sylvia Park, has an extensive store front which is five times the size of one of our standard fashion retailers. Sylvia Park with ZARA will offer shoppers a world class experience,” said General manager retail Karl Retief. Thanks to ZARA’s unique business model

the company can have a new design created and distributed in just 1-2 weeks and has control of every element of production from design to distribution. It launches around 12,000 new designs a year thanks to a huge team of designers who are constantly changing and editing designs based on customer feedback. Despite its massive global presence, 50% of Zara’s products are still manufactured in Spain. ZARA is also one of the most ecofriendly companies. It uses solar panels and wind turbines at its headquarters in A Coruña. It is also one of the few clothing brands that produces 100% toxic-free clothing. With the store set to open to the public this spring, ZARA will join a range of national and international retailers in one of the best shopping destinations in the country.

KEEPERS
FINDERS
1.
Create a talking-point in your home with a few well-chosen pieces. Whether it’s a quirky appliance or a unique piece of art personalise a space and make it your own.
2.
Your interior space should tell a really great story about you from the things you like to the way you like to live. Investing in a few great one-off pieces will help to showcase your style and set your look apart.
If on the other hand you love colour, look for items in a different colour story, they might be in a contrasting colour, have a unique print or be made of an interesting texture. Soft furnishings like a patterned rug, scatter cushions or a throw blanket are a great and inexpensive way to draw the eye in a busy space.
Whether quirky or colourful, a statement piece could be a vibrant abstract painting or an aged antique sideboard but just as important as what you choose is where you choose to put it.
But perhaps the best thing about finding a statement piece is that it doesn’t have to be expensive to have wow factor. In fact, unlike big-ticket items which are more permanent, less expensive items like soft furnishings and art prints are incredibly easy and affordable to change when the time comes to switch up your look and experiment once more.
A neutral interior for instance, is a great way to showcase one or two bold pieces as they so easily stand out, the key to remember here however, is that less is always more.

MIX IT UP Too much of the same thing can become boring. By taking a mix ‘n’ match approach to your interior styling, you’ll end up with the kind of room that wow’s. Just because a duvet has a matching pillowcase doesn’t mean that you have to use it. In fact, some of the most creative and eye-catching interiors are brilliant because they aren’t perfectly matched. For example, a kid’s bedroom might have a blue and pink theme running through it and yet contain various pops of other colours like green and yellow but on the whole it all just works. The key to pulling off the mix ‘n’ match look is to pick a key colour as the focus of your room but experiment with many variations of it. Be that different shades from solid colours to softer hues or by introducing various patterns and prints. A great way to mix and match is with a gallery style display of wall art and prints. For instance, you might choose

a botanical theme with a focus on leafy green illustrations and artworks. To this you might add a few modern black and white prints for added interest. Black and grey are great colours to inject as they contrast a bright colour well without taking away from it. The wonderful thing about mixing and matching is that there really aren’t any rules. In fact, you can use existing treasures and special heirlooms as your inspiration. A sentimental vase for instance can look instantly refreshed when displayed on a modern side table. Whether you prefer a neutral space or bold colour scheme as long as there is a common thread the finished result will be a room that is interesting and vibrant while still looking cohesive.

HOW 2 KEEP THE BALANCE! More often than not we are finding ourselves working outside the office, from remote locations or from sofas. So when it comes to designing the space you work from, how do you find a balance between making a space feel professional that also meets the needs of a busy household. Comfort is key. Whether your office is tucked away in the smallest part of the house or out in the open you’ll be needing a good reason to work from there. Invest in the important things like a great office chair that moulds to your back with different positions for other family members to use too. Choosing a table that holds your computer with room to spread out will mean you are less likely to look elsewhere for space. A comfy couch or chair also gives you the opportunity to change your location and lets the kids share the space too. If you are working in a compact setting it pays to have a system for organising. Take advantage of folders and desk-top filing cabinets to keep clutter and loose paper to a minimum. Last but not least, personalise the space with items that are practical and fun. A mug with an inspiring quote or a funky desk lamp that speaks to your style are great options as are pot plants which will help to bring the outside in.

+ THE
EVERYTHING
KITCHEN SINK Nicknamed ‘the heart of the home’ the kitchen isn’t just a place for cooking but a space to connect and entertain with family and friends. When it comes to styling your kitchen choose a theme that reflects who you are and what you like. You might choose a favourite colour and find appliances or soft furnishings that will provide a generous pop of that colour throughout, or you might simply choose a specific look. Perhaps that look is simple and minimal so the pieces you choose would reflect this, be that a sleek white pair of salt and pepper grinders or a marble mortar and pestle. Everything in the space from your cutlery to your cookbooks, plates and tea towels should feel cohesive and reflect the look you’re going for. Don’t be afraid to decorate with items that you wouldn’t normally find in the kitchen, like a piece of wall art or a set of stacking dolls, they all help to personalise your space. Whether you’re going for an inner-city feel or a country kitchen vibe, decorate your kitchen with both style and personality in mind.
