ways wear artan TO
Tartan is this season’s must-have print and with so many styles to choose from we’ve come up with 10 of our favourite ways to wear the trend. For an edgy combination go for a leather biker jacket or knee-high boots. Skinny jeans and a tartan top make a great casual outfit or style-up a tartan dress with a statement bag for a night out. If you’re daring try mixing it up with a dark leopard or geometric print. Tartan can be sophisticated or casual the key is to experiment and have fun.

The LIFE of a moochi garment begins as

“We are mostly made in New Zealand – this surprises people all the time,” says Taylor.
Garmen t sketch e wall showcasing Samples are ideas o made n paper s putting Storyboard design st yle and fu to test new season lines nction
The life of a moochi garment begins as a humble sketch, in the light and airy design room of the moochi ‘designpod’. The idea behind the sketch may have come suddenly, inspired by a forecasted trend, a unique fabric print, or a standout piece from a past moochi collection, or it may have existed for a time in a similar form, until a logical place for it was found, like a missing piece of very large puzzle. For the designs that make it through this initial process and find themselves pinned on the design room wall, which reads like a ‘storyboard’ of the new season’s deliveries, there are still many weeks and many hands to travel through before you find it neatly pressed and hung in your local moochi store. “We operate more like a traditional designer brand in the way we create our products – design, fabricate, sample, make” says moochi Creative Director, Kellie Taylor. With new product delivering into moochi stores weekly, this is no easy task. From pattern maker to presser, before you meet your new moochi garment, more than twenty industry specialists, most in-house, some local contractors, have had a hand in creating it.
10 | Five0ONE A/W2015
“We love that moochi is made here. It creates more opportunities within the local industry for everyone from fabric manufacturers and trim suppliers, to screen printers and sewers. It also means we can create small runs and react very swiftly, to produce more of what our customers want and get it to them quickly,” she says. When creating a new season, much thought goes into planning each chapter of the moochi story. Every time a fabric is selected, a custom print is created, or a microtrend is explored, each element must not only ‘work’ on its own, but also as part of the bigger picture that is the brand’s seasonal offering. All moochi lines, from knitwear and specialty cloths to leather and accessories follow a different production process that over time has been perfected by the designers through change and adaptation. Even with a full season of designs carefully sketched, discussed, refined and reviewed, the process of production is where the garments are truly tested. “We wash test each and every fabric and unfortunately many do get rejected at this stage for fading, piling, twisting or shrinkage. This can be heart breaking for us in the design room, as sometimes our new favourite can fail at testing despite being fabulous at face value,” says Taylor. It is this hands-on approach to design and production that Taylor credits for a level of quality control now rarely found in this fast moving industry. “We know that women buy moochi not just for a special event to wear once, but with the expectation that her pieces will be the most worn in her wardrobe,” says Taylor.
NZ DESIGNERS FEATURE
“That’s why we control so much of the process ourselves through being essentially three businesses in one – we are designers, we are manufacturers and we are retailers,” she says. This approach extends to even the smallest details you’ll find in a moochi store – including the small runs of shoes, jewellery and accessories. “We’re really lucky to now be able to design the moochi full look, from head to toe,” says Taylor. “I’ll admit the production process is a little bit crazy – for example at the moment we create our shoe designs ourselves (often with cardboard!), working closely with our makers to get every little detail spot on before they create each one individually by hand. “All designers have their own process for design and production that works for them, and while ours may not be the easiest or most sensible way, we love our bespoke pieces – they are made in very small quantities and are quite special,” says Taylor. moochi Creative Director Kellie Taylor

HOW TO APPLY
& Beautiful LIPPY
With YouTube Beauty Guru Shaaanxo
Kiwi YouTube sensation Shannon Harris, has a larger makeup collection than your average enthusiast! The self-confessed ‘Beauty Junkie’ from Palmerston North has over 1.6 million subscribers to her YouTube channel Shaaanxo to date! SHANNON SAYS… This winter is all about a pop of colour! The look I am wearing is perfect for autumn and winter. It’s simple to apply but looks stunning! I personally love a bold lip. Rich purple tones are definitely on trend at the moment and there is a tone for every complexion. Get swatches of the colours that you like while you’re in store or even ask a staff member to apply your favourites on you. That way you can be sure it’s the hue for you! Scan the above QR code on your phone or visit www.centreplace.co.nz to see a full tutorial on how to achieve this look. In the tutorial I explain why and how I use each product, helping you through each step so it’s easy to follow. Remember that it doesn’t matter how much or how little makeup you wear. It’s all about wearing as much as YOU want, and as much as YOU are happy wearing!

HEALTH & BEAUTY STEP A;
All about the base
Primer, foundation and concealer will create the perfect canvas for you to apply the rest of your makeup! Use powder to set it in place for long lasting wear.
STEP B;
Make them pop
Using light shimmery colours at your inner eye and underneath your brow will brighten your complexion. I’ve also winged the eyeliner to help elongate my eyes.
STEP C;
Love colour
Don’t be afraid to be bold with your lipstick! If you love it, work it! Blush and highlighter is a great way to add colour back onto the skin- especially if you’ve lost your summer glow.

QA &
Get to know the family behind the Meccano brand who have been styling New Zealand men for over 22 years. Our Editor, Tina Boyd interviewed owners Cheryl, Dai Enticott-Davies and their son Brent who all work in the business.
How did you come to start the Meccano brand? Dai & Cheryl: In 1993 when we opened we noticed there was a gap in market for a midprice point men’s retailer. The lower end of the market and upper end were catered for but there was no brand in the mid market for men. We opened our first store in Hamilton at Centre Place in 1993 and had the legendary Hamilton businessman Bob Pollock as our first customer. He was so enthusiastic and persistent about being our first customer that he was knocking on the store grill before we opened wanting to buy something - we handed him a blue Lacoste sweatshirt through the grill and he passed back $50! . “Now then – I’ve become your first customer” said Bob. That event was a very memorable moment for us both. How many stores do you own? Dai: 15 stores nationwide, we started in Hamilton but have expanded throughout New Zealand with stores from Auckland to Dunedin. We are opening our 16th store in October this year in Auckland in the new NorthWest Shopping centre. Do you do your own buying? And how do you choose the new season lines? Dai & Cheryl: We research the northern hemisphere fashion and trends as they are 6 months ahead of us. We only sell what is proven and on trend. Brent is the Meccano buyer and he travels to the US, UK and Europe and finds the styles and designs we want to work with. Brent: Travelling overseas for design inspiration allows me to see what guys are wearing on the streets a season ahead, also what they are buying and responding to in store. Have you noticed any major changes in the fashion world over the years? Dai: Global fashion trends are cyclic, you often see new styles come in that are similar or a reflection of past trends and styles. Who according to you is the best dressed man in Hollywood or most stylish man? Brent: Hmmm, David Beckham for his casual, masculine, timeless anti –scene style and…. Pharrell Williams for his youthful fun, happy, creative style. What is your favourite item in your wardrobe? Dai: I’m a jacket man. My blue blazer is my favourite you can sling it on with anything – chinos, jeans or dress trousers. Brent: I’m a t-shirt man. A scoop neck black tee goes with any washed denim, chino and Nike shoes. How does a Kiwi man’s style differ to other nationalities? Dai: Kiwi guys have a more casual fashion style. Fashion crimes? Dai: Guys doing their buttons up all the way on their suit jacket. There’s such a thing as ‘dress etiquette’ and it’s up to us to help educate our customers on how to wear a garment correctly. Cheryl: Trousers that are the wrong length. Brent: Jeans too long dragging on the ground with the backs worn out and printed tees over dress shirts. What style advice do you have for men this season? Brent: Vintage leather boots, tapered raw denim jeans with cuffs rolled up, good hair, Merino knitwear and a classy wool Melton jacket. What would be one piece that is a must have this winter? Brent: The Cashmere hand feel Merino Knitwear $99.99. What are the essentials men always need in their wardrobe? Dai: Chino, jeans and multiple shirts. Brent: Good fitting denim and a gingham shirt.
