Anthem Tobacco up in Smoke
A
s quickly as it came, it went. When Anthem Tobacco opened next door to Maki Insurance Group and Cafe Aroma in the Anthem Commerce Park in July, it rattled residents and some nearby business owners concerned about the items for sale. Former Anthem Community Council board member Ron Jerich told Council at its July meeting, “You would think they would sell tobacco, and they do... but they are selling bongs over there.” Barb Evans, Anthem Community Council spokesperson, said in early July Council notified the property owner that the sale of drug paraphernalia is prohibited by Council’s Supplemental Declaration of Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions. “On August 7, the property owners terminated the lease with Anthem Tobacco and retook possession of the property,” Evans said.
COUNCIL UPDATE
Firm Sought to Oversee Construction of Civic Building
C
ouncil unanimously gave CEO Jenna Kollings the green light at its Aug. 22 meeting to begin assembling a selection team to interview and recommend a project management firm to be hired to oversee the construction, engineering and design within the 36,000-square-foot facility on Anthem Way. Kollings said the project manager would be “intimately involved with the planning and design decisions and able to provide cost-impact input upfront.” According to Kollings, hiring a project manager should result in reduced change orders, cost overruns, as well as reduced staff time managing the contracts. The firm would develop a timeline to coordinate planning, cost, the bidding process, construction oversight, moving and project closeout. The selection team will be comprised of ACC staff, board representatives and community members. The team’s recommendation will require formal board approval. In a sudden change of course in July, Council voted to fund the entire $2.3 million building purchase and an estimated $1.5 million in renovations with cash from the enhancement fund instead of a loan as residents were lead to believe. 2. Speed bumps In bike lanes. Posse members have long been on edge with bikers who ignore traffic signals. “Sooner or later, somebody’s going to get hurt.” Spine-crushing speed bumps like the ones in the lot by the soccer fields could save lives and provide a boost for local PTs. 3. Jogging lanes. End the power struggle between bikers and joggers with a lane for each separated by a low wall―or maybe a low-voltage electric fence. 4. A GEM lane While we’re adding lanes… It’s illegal for the plodding electric vehicles to ride in the bike (jog) lane, but some of those monster SUV drivers must IN&OUT

5. Branded Shuttle Service Anthem’s fantastic events draw tens of thousands. But parking is a bear. Let’s put a couple extra tanks of gas in those fancy wrapped vans Anthem uses to… well, we’re not sure what Anthem uses them for… (Haven’t seen them? You’re overdue at the gym. Those mobile ads are anything but mobile, parked at the far end of the Community Center lot.) They could shuttle event-goers to satellite parking easing congestion and improving the experience. Between events, they could transport some of our non-driving seniors to the Outlets, the doctor or the grocery for a small fee.

1. Wi-fi at the Community Center Seriously. It’s 2012. Subway, Ray’s Pizza, Ocho Locos, Phoenix Sky Harbor, your kid’s guitar teacher... Everybody offers free wi-fi. The Community Center has a splash park that eliminates the need for vacation, an accredited child care facility, a gym with stunning mountain views, even underwater Zumba classes… “We don’t have wi-fi, but Starbucks does. It’s just down the street.” Please.

be very late and are visibly annoyed by the relaxed smile on NEV drivers. Let’s encourage responsible commuting, lessen dependence on foreign oil and preserve that silly NEV grin with a dedicated lane.
6. Surveillance Cameras On every street. This enhancement would pay for itself almost immediately, eliminating the expense of compliance officers who seem to work long hours, while increasing fine revenues from leashless dog-walkers, delinquent recycling receptacle retrievers, and worse, commuters who leave the garage door open longer than needed to park a vehicle and seal themselves safely inside.

But, come time to remind the 37 retirees to show up at monthly HOA meetings, and out come the 10-year-old plastic sandwich boards, its messages held on with melted tape. There are area events every day [See “In,” Page 7]. Let visitors know how vibrant this community really is. (And skip empty marketing phrases bragging about “abundance.”) 9. An Amphitheater Upgrade Stage, lighting, sound, shade, storage, power, access. The amphitheater in the main park has the bones to be a stunning outdoor venue and provide much needed performance space. Need staff to run and maintain it? We hear there are some compliance officers who might need work. 10. Live plants Parkside was breathtakingly lush in the DLC days. But, whoever held the purse strings might have had their other hand on the water faucet. Storm cleanup has eliminated much of the desiccated plant life. Will the dehydrated plants be replaced? We’re not even clear how Parkside will pay for the 150 or so downed trees. io

This tubular daylighting device made by Solatube provides bright natural light in an otherwise gloomy shower.

Brilliant! SOLATUBE
I
f you live within the sound of my keyboard, you have a truss-framed roof. This means, without hiring an engineer and doing some tricky and expensive modifications, a traditional skylight is not in your future. But if you want energy efficient, bright, natural daylight in the dark recesses of your home, consider a tubular alternative. A tubular daylight device could mean a brightened interior hallway, or bright natural light in your walk-in closet. Sold under brand names like Solatube, TubularSkylight, Natural Light and others, tubular daylight devices —or TDDs—funnel natural light into dark areas of your home at a fraction of the cost of your mamma’s skylight. They are also much greener and more versatile. The downside is you can’t peek at the sky through them. A typical TDD consists of a clear roof-mounted dome and flashing, a mirrored metal tube that can be lengthened and turned to snake around attic obstructions, and a translucent lens that attaches to your ceiling. A variety of nifty upgrades include a light socket (See TUBULAR on Page 19)
Research shows students with the most daylight in their classrooms progressed 20 percent faster on math tests and 26 percent faster on reading tests in one year than those with the least. And, students that had a well-designed skylight in their room, one that diffused the daylight throughout the room and which allowed teachers to control the amount of daylight entering the room, also improved by 19–20 percent faster than those students without a skylight. out how to turn them off. An (almost) instant room-brightener will set you back anywhere from $175 to more than $300 + bells and whistles. Go with quality over frugality. After all, you are cutting a large hole in your roof and you really want to get it right the first time. If you have decent DIY skills and aren’t afraid of heights, this Since they kind of look like a regular might be a project you can tackle yourself. light fixture, they provide hours of amusement when house guests try to figure If not, a good handyman can do the job. io (skylights only work in the day... duh), a fan kit (for bathrooms), dimmers (for use in a nursery or media room) and a variety of ceiling fixtures to diffuse the light. Some companies even give you the choice of a couple sizes.
5 TO GO TUBULAR REASONS
TDDs are a no-brainer in new builds in the Valley, but architects seem to make lighting decisions based on economic and technical constraints, rather than the biological needs of humans or even sustainability. So, here’s why retrofitting a TDD or two should be on your honey-do list:

• • • • 2 3 4
Leave the light on.
TDDs are perfect for closets, dark halls and laundry rooms where traffic is frequent and brief. SOLATUBE
TDDs have very low solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) as compared to any other any type of fenestration. In other words, during the summer, you won’t have to darken your house to keep your AC from going into overdrive.

Once installed correctly, they can cost $0 to run. One 14-inch solar tube can provide the equivalent light of six 100-watt incandescents. A sustainable alternative to traditional lighting. Even during cloudy days, a good amount of light is transmitted through the tube. Cost is relatively low, and installation relatively simple when compared to a traditional skylight or window. No reframing, tunnelling, dry-walling or painting is required. Natural daylight is linked to many benefits on health and productivity over artificial light.

Starbucks
Diehard Sbux addicts and iPhone nerds are often one in the same, so this app has a promising future. Load it with funds like a digital Starbucks card and it lets you pay for your drink with a click. You can also discover the ingredients and nutrition information of all the drinks and food at Starbucks. Create and catalog your own drink custom recipes to give to your barista and share with your friends.
AAA Did you know
that GAP and Banana Republic offer a 10 percent discount on all merchandise—even sale items—to AAA members? Or that Home Depot knocks 12 percent off moving supplies and truck rentals to members? The coolest thing about this app is the ability to take a photo from your iPhone’s camera roll, and with a few clicks, send it to print for pickup in just under an hour. One 5 x 7 costs around $2.
