Living In Anthem & Loving It!
Second Guessing the First Home Dear Doreen, My husband and I are suffering every morning with buyer’s remorse! We are first-time home buyers who searched for a year. We finally found a home we both liked, put our money down and now we’re not so sure it was the right decision. How do you know you chose right? —Suffering in Phoenix Dear Suffering, Think back. Of course, you and your husband talked about what’s important to each of you in a house, right? Sounds simple, but often one has truly different views and expections than the other. Why did you choose your current rental?
What do you love/hate about it? My hunch is after you rehash some of these discussions, you will know you probably made the right decision. After all, you didn’t rush into this purchase. Once you feel comfortable that this is the right house for you, make the rest of the process go without incident: Use a synchronized calendar, like Google, to map out meetings and milestones, inspections and design appointments. Don’t miss any of them or it may stall the progress. And have fun! This is an exciting time in your life. —Doreen

It’s the School’s Responsibility
T
he parking problem at Boulder Creek High School is sad news, to say the least. If the school district is allowing the school to be that much over capacity, they need to step up and find a way to provide the needed parking spots. The kids are just trying to get to school on time and without injury. Is the entire school administration, district administration, and governing board asleep at the wheel―again? It is not a problem of the Anthem HOA, it is a problem of the district. The kids are merely stuck in the middle, again.

COUNCIL UPDATE
ACC CFO: ‘Storm Damage Estimates Will Take Months’
I
t’s been more than a month since the monsoon storm tore through Anthem uprooting trees, washing out trails and flooding streets and homes—and the damage continues to be tallied daily. Anthem Community Financial Officer Doug Greenstein said it will take several months to determine the full financial impact the storm. He said staff is working with Council’s insurance adjusters in an effort to maximize the value of the claim. When asked about the potential impact on homeowners’ assessments, Greenstein said clean-up and restoration expenses that exceed insurance deductibles will come from Council’s reserve and operating funds. “Of course we don’t know the effect on future assessments, but we’ll certainly work to get every nickel we can from the insurance company,” he said. ACC has not raised assessments since January 2007 when the rate was nudged from $180 to $187.50 per quarter. Parks and Facilities Director David Smith said 176 trees were lost on Council property in Parkside and Country Club, and replanting will begin in the fall and another round in the spring. Still Closed Due to Storm Damage • Trails located south of Anthem Way and West of Daisy Mountain Drive • Liberty Bell Splash Pad (Closed indefinitely due to recent electrical storm damage.)
DMFD Fireman Honored for Off-Duty Acts of Bravery
W
hen DMFD’s Matt Wood, (above, center) was travelling north on 7th Street south of Loop 101 last year, he spotted an apartment on fire and quickly reacted. After notifying the Phoenix regional dispatch center, he evacuated the complex, but found the occupant of the burning unit trapped, and his apartment was quickly being consumed by fire, heat and smoke, said Capt. Dave Wilson. “Firefighter Wood bravely rescued the resident by pulling him from a window before being overcome by the toxic environment. The fire was then successfully extinguished shortly after by Phoenix fire units,” Wilson said. Last week, the state of Arizona presented Wood with the prestigious Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Firefighter of the Year recognition for his instinctive and lifesaving acts of bravery while off-duty. Wood was honored with the award Monday, Aug. 27 at the Daisy Mountain Fire Board meeting. (See BUZZ on Page 18) SEPTEMBER 13, 2012 |

Laurie Smith
On Hope, Drugs & Being “Full Inside”
F
or three years, she has been Outreach Coordinator at Anthem’s Cross of Christ Church. In many ways, it’s a role she’s played most of her life. Coming from a family of strong faith, Laurie Smith got addicted to the joy that comes from helping others when she was just 4 years old. She remembers helping her elderly neighbor “Aunt Annie” rake leaves. “What drove me was the fact it felt good inside to help her.” That feeling has not faded. Yes, Smith has turned her spirit-of-giving into a job― one that touches literally thousands of lives. She said she has the most important credentials on her side: faith, love and selflessness. After the earthquake in Haiti, Smith organized 900 volunteers who packed a staggering 200,000 meals at Cross of Christ for victims of that disaster. Closer to home, Smith helps coordinate gathering socks and making lunches for the homeless in Phoenix. Then she, and other volunteers, hand them out at 12th Street and Madison. Habitat for Humanity is another passion for Smith, and most recently, she spearheaded efforts to help Anthem’s flood victims. (See SMITH on Page 22) SEPTEMBER 13, 2012 |

As a new mom, Kasia didn’t have time for pain. Today, she’s not only painless. She’s scarless. After her baby was born, Kasia experienced stomach pain worse than the labor itself. She soon learned she needed to have her gall bladder removed. A day after undergoing single-incision, roboticassisted surgery at John C. Lincoln Hospital, her pain was gone. And not only was she free to pick up her baby boy, her body was free of any visible scars. To read Kasia’s story, visit JCL.com/kasia.

(From SMITH on Page 21)
On where the spirit comes from… “I think it comes from being full inside, without looking for external things to fill me up. By giving. By being in the Bible. I worship regularly. That’s when I am feeling full and I rise to the occasion… I have a passion to serve and I still get that warm fuzzy feeling when I help. It makes me feel good to serve others. I think it’s a mirror of what Jesus did.”
On what type of needs exist in our area… “I believe the most immediate need in Anthem right now is how to address the growing drug use in our youth. I’m not exactly sure how this problem can be eliminated, but usually with any problem, communication and awareness is the key. I’m not sure our adult residents know how big of an epidemic this is.”
