ASK DOREEN
New 3.8% Transfer Tax Dear Doreen, I just read that effective Jan. 1, 2013 I will have to pay 3.8 % when I sell my house to help fund the new health care and Medicare overhaul plans! This is beyond CRAZY! We will barely break even as it is after 8 or 9 years of owning this house. Do you know anything about this and if so, why haven’t you shared with us, your loyal readers? —Not paying! Dear Not, You are correct, I should have shared sooner. But here’s why I haven’t: First, it’s complicated. It imposes a 3.8% tax on some (but not all)
income from rents (less expenses) and capital gains (less capital losses). See what I mean? Second, the tax will fall only on indviduals with an adjusted gross income above $200,000 and couples filing a joint return with more than $250,00 adjusted gross income. If you fall into some of these catagories, please discuss with your tax advisor. One of the best resources for more information is www.realtor.org/ healthreform. On that site it actually gives some great easy-to-understand examples. No worries. :) —Doreen

A Message from the Daisy Mountain Veterans Parade Chairperson
T
he Daisy Mountain Veterans take the Veterans Parade and Family Picnic seriously. For the past seven years, by Oct. 1, the Daisy Mountain Veterans have come close enough to its financial goals for the parade that we’re comfortable. In 2010 we came up short by several thousand dollars and struggled to pay our bills. That caused us to take a serious look at our expenses and trim them where we could.
still short of our financial needs, we are comfortable that more sponsors and supporters will come through enough that the Daisy Mountain Veterans will be able to handle the shortfall.

Block Party!
It's Arizona’s cooler alternative to National Night Out. So chat with your neighbors and plan a party for Saturday, Oct 20. It gives you a chance not only to party on the street, but to get everyone in your neighborhood together, to know each other and band together to create a stronger neighborhood. Strong neighborhoods send a signal to criminals that crime is not tolerated. The year is 1881 and the lure of copper and gold throughout the untamed Arizona territory brings the development of savage and lawless boomtowns. Towns with names like Goldfield, Tombstone and Blood Creek. With these boomtowns come early settlers dreaming of a better life out West, as well as merciless men on the run from their troubled past. “Copper Wind,” directed by Chaz Lee, is the only full-length Western to be filmed exclusively in Arizona, produced and premiered during Arizona’s centennial year. This explosive, action-packed film—on love, hate, vengeance and discovery—features all Arizona scenery and talent, with several prominent Arizona individuals in cameo roles. 12 |

Aimed squarely at non-accomplished musicians and beginners, this highly comedic yet extremely educational look at learning to play piano is a hit with adult audiences. he garden center formerly occupied by Ace Hardware is the perfect drive-up donation drop, or at least that’s how Goodwill Industries sees it. And the massive adjacent retail space—perfect for a Goodwill store. But, the concept didn’t go over well with the Anthem Community Council at its Sept. 26 meeting. ACC would not entertain Goodwill’s request for a variance to the CC&Rs governing the Shops at Anthem complex. The retailer, eyeing the possibility of leasing the long-vacant retail space, asked Council to consider lifting the ban on thrift and second-hand stores in that plaza. Goodwill reps held out hope that Council would consider the sagging economy as justification for the variance. Former council president Donna Gloshen told the board, “Goodwill is a great place, but there is a lot of traffic generated [from it]… I would prefer it on the other side of the highway… with the Commerce Park and kinds of businesses on that side.”

Japan’s Autumn Moon Festival (Right here In Phoenix)
O
tsukimi, the traditional Japanese Moon Viewing Festival, has been a part of Japanese culture for more than 1,000 years. It’s a celebration of the harvest moon and an abundant fall harvest. In the Valley of the Sun, residents can join the celebration of Otsukimi Saturday, Oct. 20 at Ro Ho En—the Japanese Friendship Garden of Phoenix. Otsukimi is an evening of traditional Japanese food, drink, dance and poetry. Taiko drumming will thrill the crowd while local musicians perform music from Japan. Exhibitions of swordsmanship and traditional Japanese dance will enrich the cultural offerings of the evening.
Dinner will be served on the beautiful garden grounds, with its peaceful garden path and 5/8-acre, heart-shaped koi pond. Traditional Japanese tea and sweets can be expected. Ro Ho En is a joint venture between the City of Phoenix and one of its sister cities – Himeji, Japan. Designed and built on 3.5 acres, the stunning garden, a wonderland of Eastern design sculptures and landscapes surrounded by plants common to the Orient, expresses the friendship between our two cultures. Even the name, Ro Ho En, is a bridge between the two sister cities. Ro means heron, the symbolic bird of Himeji. Ho is the written characterization of the mythical Phoenix Bird and En means garden. The major symbol of Ro Ho En is the mythical fish with the face of a tiger known as shachi. The shachi statue in the Phoenix garden is identical to the ones on the roof of Himeji Castle in Japan. Many lanterns and bridges enhance the stroll through Ro Ho En. So does the traditional teahouse that celebrates the ancient art of Chanoyu—the tea ceremony—the second Saturday of each month. (Call for reservations.) The Moon Viewing Festival provides an excuse to get out and enjoy a lovely October evening in a traditional Japanese garden. io OCTOBER 11, 2012 |

Light Bulb Logic Standard
LED
Appliance
One of these bulbs can cause your garage door remote to malfunction. Another can cause frequent interruptions to NFL viewing.
T
he fragile filament of a standard incandescent light bulb is no match for the constant vibration and shaking that occurs when opening and closing an overhead garage door. After six years and a dozen light bulb funerals (it would have been twice that had I not let the dead bulb sit until my wife’s screams drown out the sound from the game on TV), a tiny bulb of its own went off in my head: LED! While LED bulbs are expensive (mine cost $25), they have a “life hour” rating of 23 years (not a misprint), which means I could enjoy uninterrupted NFL well into my 50s (not a misprint either... just a blatant bold-faced lie). I ran out and purchased my state-of-the-art solution tout de suite, and my problems were solved. That is, until the opener remotes stopped working. I didn’t make the connection, at first. It wasn’t until I called my trusted confidant Jeremy, with Bullfrog Garage Door, that I learned about LED light bulbs and wireless transmitter interference. Drat! Another great leap
in technology that comes hitched to a big ol’ stinking asterisk. If you want the science behind this phenomenon, good luck with that. Twidgets* much smarter than I, can’t get on the same page. It all has something to do with radio frequency transmission spectrums bumping against each other. Right before my brain overheated and switched to polka music mode, I learned that compact fluorescents, portable phones, wireless routers and other electronic devices, can cause the same problem. I also found out that these marauding RF waves can mess with radio and (please, God, NO!), TV reception. Once I unscrewed the bulb, all my garage door remotes worked fine. I replaced it with a 40 watt incandescent appliance bulb, which I’m told is much beefier than a standard bulb. Moral of the story: If electronic stuff starts going phooey, start unplugging and unscrewing other stuff. Ain’t technology awesome? io *Navy term for electronics geeks. OCTOBER 11, 2012 |
