ASK DOREEN

From Chicken to Golden Eggs Dear Doreen, I really want to buy a home, fix it up (I love to decorate) and resell it. But, I’m a chicken! I’m so afraid of losing money, I’ve let the market turn while I sit here in fear. Ideas? —No Golden Eggs Dear Chicken, Here’s how to do it: 1. Hire a pro. Get an experienced agent who knows where the deals are and is adept at making offers, negotiating, securing a mortgage and closing the deal—standard stuff for an experienced agent. 2. Plan before you buy. Choose a location you understand. Select the type of property. Know the

improvements you’re willing to make and can afford. Estimate the turnaround time. (Then add more time for cushion.) Start small. 3. Do-it-yourself or hire cheap labor (college students, day laborers, etc.) for basic painting, landscaping and other unskilled work. 4. Furnish lightly to complement the floorplan while leaving room for imagination. As with any sale, make it inviting from curb to master bath. Inform your agent of your improvements so he/she can highlight them to buyers. Follow these instructions and you could be ‘in the money.’ —Doreen

Disappointment in Council Decisions

I

just want to register my repeated unhappiness with the decisions of our Anthem Council. The west side already has business activity thanks to the outlets, Walmart, the hotel and many more. The east side of Anthem businesses need help and need a magnet—as Goodwill would be. [See “No Goodwill at Old Ace” In&Out, Thursday, Oct. 11, available at anthemnews.com] Yes, people use cars to get places, don’t they? And, business thrives in high-traffic areas. How does Council think this process works? Goodwill thought highly enough of Anthem to want to open a store here, but no. The new store is opening at 14202 N. Scottsdale Road, near Kierland Commons—and I will be there to support

it. As a collector of English bone china, sterling flatware…and figurine collectibles, Goodwill [is one of] my sources for rare pieces. Goodwill and eBay are among the world’s largest retailers of vintage and antique items. Goodwill obtains many donations of excellent quality products from the manufacturers. Private individuals also donate to this great cause. After six years in Anthem, we are still disappointed with decisions made by Council. Since residents have no voting privileges, we are left powerless. We resent that, in the end, one or two people seem to decide everything.

Business is Better in Anthem

I

recently started a new business and, of course, that was the moment my printer decided to quit working. I was overwhelmed and I mentioned this to Mike at Cartridge Solutions on Anthem Way when I was in his store buying new ink. Mike offered to help me fix my printer free of charge—and spent two weeks doing so. I had several occasions where I needed things printed in the meantime and he was always happy to help me and refused any type of payment saying, “We’re neighbors in Anthem… That is just what we do for each other.” I was extremely grateful for his help and so thankful for his kindness. I will never forget when I said I was hoping for the best in my new business endeavors and he said, “You will succeed. Hard workers never fail.” It has stuck with me as I pursue my dreams. I wanted to say “thank you” to Mike in a big way. Thank goodness for hard working and kind Anthem neighbors! Gotta love Anthem.

School Board Candidates

Four candidates vying for three seats on the Deer Valley Unified School District Board in the N and veteran Greg Gregoire (who served in 2005-2010 under the name Michael Gregoire) challe

What qualifies you as the best candidate for the school board? Greg Gregoire

“As business owner, I bring to the table the qualities of managing a budget that is efficient and effective and can compete with the challenge that charter and private schools bring. As a software developer, I have a keener insight as to what technology will be the most engaging and durable in our classrooms.”

Marc Kuffner

“Understanding each district is different, I will be able to understand the issues facing DVUSD and help put our teachers and administrators in a position to solve these tough challenges. As an expert on Arizona’s school finances, I will employ my knowledge, skills and experiences to ensure fiscal prudence and a return on investment, evidenced by increased academic progress and achievement. We have to manage our budget based on measured results with academic accountability to the student and financial accountability to taxpayers and our community.”

Ann E. Ordway

“In the four years that I’ve served, I’ve served the first two years as vice president, and last two I have been president. I have a good handle on facilitating and listening. I believe my best qualities are that I am a data-driven decision maker, actively involved in all aspects of the school district and have a good sense of situational awareness within all regions of the district. My purpose for seeking a second term is because I truly enjoy being a servant leader of an organization that is student centered.”

51, Anthem Business owner, software developer Children Four; two at Boulder Creek High School and one at Anthem School Served one term on the Board (2005–2010) 42, Anthem Assistant Superintendent for Economic Management, Maricopa County Education Service Agency Children Three at Gavilan Peak School

Touch on Top Issues

Nov. 6 election identify the issues as they see them. Newcomer Mark Kuffner enge incumbents Ann Ordway and Ron Bayer. Terms are four years.

What are the biggest issues facing the district? How will you address them?

What about the capital override?

“The biggest issues are addressing the dropout rate and the financial budgets. The legislature has slashed (the already lowest per child of any state) school budgets even further these last few years. We must find the most efficient ways to spend what we got, measuring every dollar with how it effects the classroom.”

“The state legislature has broken its promise to schools by extinguishing all funding for renewal and infrastructure. The last few years, school budgets have been at zero for these items. It’s only through the continued support of the local taxpayers who appreciate good education, has DVUSD barely been able to maintain classrooms and textbooks.”

“Social factors in the classroom are a continued concern; at the forefront are bullying, drugs and other issues that plague our schools. Along with school protocol for handling such situations, we must also educate our parents and community members of all these negative social issues. Today, teachers are considered educators, parents, social workers… We need to get to the point where teachers are teachers and the time spent with students is focused on education and curriculum. We can accomplish this working collaboratively … to craft policies with clear direction and accountability for actions.”

“This is a continuation of the current override, not a new tax and I support the continuation of the capital override. We can wait for the state to fund a level that “maintains” the status quo, or we can be the district that sets the standards for academic achievement through our capital expenditures.”

“I think the next big step is to formulate our next strategic plan that will last for five years. Even more important now is to make sure all stakeholders are actively involved. We need to know what our constituents want, the businesses and parents. We’ve got to embed the common core, which is a paradigm shift… away from rote memorization and toward active learning, so, it’s a bit different with methodologies teachers are using currently. Our kids will own all the information they learn; It’s a big responsibility. Strategic planning involving common core is our next crucial endeavor.”

“My position is ‘Yes, yes, yes.’ We need to have ample funding for students to be successful. We have proven we are a school district that uses taxpayers’ money, respectfully, responsibly, effectively and efficiently.”

but is erroneously listed as a candidate on the early ballot.

DVUSD Says Capital Override Will Support Bare Essentials By Karen Goveia kgoveia@anthemnews.com

A

s part of the Tuesday, Nov. 6 General Election, voters residing within the Deer Valley Unified School District boundaries will decide the fate of a capital override to fund district-wide technology improvements, textbooks, school equipment, athletic uniforms/equipment and updates to aging school busses. If approved, the district will get $7.5 million annually for seven years beginning 2013 from homeowner property taxes. District officials stressed that renewal of the override would not create an additional tax, but simply extend the capital override voters passed in 2005 set to expire at the end of this school year. “This is not an increase to the tax levy paid by homeowners,” said DVUSD Superintendent James Veitenheimer, in a video on the district’s website. If passed, the projected cost for the average residential property owner in 2013–14 would be $55.45 per year, according to the district website.

Jim Migliorino, associate superintendent for fiscal services, said the funds are spent on equipment and bare essentials, not on teachers, support staff, administration or operating costs. Arizona currently falls 48th among states in per-pupil funding

for education. Over the past five years, DVUSD has made more than $38 million in cuts to capital funding, resulting in the loss of all-day kindergarten, reduction of staff, freezing of salaries, and postponement of most capital purchases, Migliorino said.

If the measure fails

Officials claim Deer Valley will lose $52.5 million from its budget over the next seven years, resulting in a loss of resources for students and a reduction to the maintenance and operations budget. io
