Living In Anthem & Loving It!

When Your House Becomes the ‘Big Top’ Dear Doreen, I feel like I am walking a tightrope! I am trying to balance my bills to keep my credit in good shape, but I am also thinking of short-selling my house which is $100,000 underwater. People keep telling me to stick it out but it’s getting harder every day! And I heard banks were allowing shortsales while staying current on your payment. But after talking with my bank, it seems they won’t budge. A little help over here? —Teetering

e

Dear Teetering, You are not the only one in this circus tent, my dear! There are still millions of homeowners underwater trying to hold on, but just can’t. Speak to an attorney to find out what your best option is. If it’s a short-sale, give us a call. We are here to help. It will be your decision whether you want to stop making payments or not. In the end, you might have to decide whether you want to come out of this with your credit or your cash. —Doreen

eople are meeting in parking lots all over town making deals from the trunk of their vehicle. It’s not what you think. It’s called “swip swapping.” And almost everyone seems to be doing it. “Swip~Swap Anthem” is a Facebook group that works like an online garage sale. Members of the group post items they would like to sell on the group’s wall, then other members of the group can comment

he Parking Lot. Bring Cash.’ Tips and Tricks for Swip Swapping • Search for the group: “Swip~Swap Anthem” on Facebook. It is a private group, so you will need to request membership. • When posting an item, include details and asking price. Keep the price less than retail. Things sell better when they are priced at half of retail cost. • Don't promote your own business. This is a non-commercial site. Promoting your business is bad manners. they would like to buy the item. Members schedule times and places to meet—in parking lots or each other’s homes. Rochelle Lamb started the group. “The idea of this page was inspired by a close friend in another state. It inspired me to create a page in Anthem, as this is a community built for families. I started with my Facebook friends and posted my own personal items.” The group has grown rapidly to more than 2,600 members.

• “ISO” is not a brand name. It means “in search of.” • Use the photo tab at the top of the page to look through photos of items being sold. Use the search box top right to type in keywords of items. • Scroll down the page. Items are posted frequently, newest at the top. Things get pushed down the page quickly. • Sell more than you spend. (This can be very difficult.) • Warning: It can be addicting. One minute, you’re posting an item to sell and the next, you’re buying a pair of Steve Maddens for $5 from the trunk of a car in the Fry’s lot.

Tracy Telesco is a member and recently held a Swip Swap rummage sale along with some friends at her home in Arroyo Grande. “We’re too far out here to attract people for a garage sale on weekends, so we invited all Swip Swap members to come shopping while their kids are at school.” “I buy more than I sell, but my husband is just as bad,” admitted Nicole Gregg. She likes shopping for children’s clothing. “They wear uniforms to school, so I save a lot of money on their play clothes by shopping on Swip Swap.” Children’s clothing, toys and books are common items bought and sold in the group. “I bought my children’s Christmas presents from sellers on Swip Swap,” Jodi Denoyer said. “My daughter outgrew her kitchen set, so I sold it and then bought a new, more ageappropriate one for her.” With the holidays approaching and many on slim budgets, Swip Swap provides an alternative to retail. Many sell iPods or gaming systems before upgrading to the latest and greatest. It’s also a way to recycle goods within the community instead of sending them to a landfill, or letting them accumulate in the garage. “By using this site, individuals are able to reduce their spending on actual consumer needs. The concept of upcycle has been restored as we all feel the effects of our current economic status. I wish a site like this was available during my son’s earlier years,” Lamb said. io 18 |

Fresh-cut Tree in the Desert PHOTO BY DICK BUSCHER

family outing to find and cut the perfect—or even less-than-perfect— Christmas tree creates one of those special lifelong memories (and makes a great backdrop for holiday pictures). Such an experience isn’t too easily had among the saguaros in our Sonoran Desert. But with a relatively short drive to the Arizona Christmas Tree Farm in Flagstaff, your family can find and cut down your own tree and make it the centerpiece for your holiday decorations. The Arizona Christmas Tree Farm is a four-acre living Christmas tree lot along the fairway of the Flagstaff Country Club. Owned and operated by Darrell Norman, this farm was first planted shortly after the turn of

the century with 11,000 1-foot Colorado blue spruce saplings in the rich volcanic soil. The first trees were tall enough to sell in 2006. More than 5,000 trees remain, ranging in size from 3 to 20 feet and sell for $10 per foot. Many are partially decorated with their own pinecones. The Colorado blue spruce is the classic choice for a Christmas tree because of its slender, pyramidal shape. In nature, it can grow to 60 feet and spread from 10 to 20 feet at the base. Cutting your own tree means it will remain fresh throughout the holiday season. Another advantage to choosing the Arizona Christmas Tree Farm as your source: No permits

are necessary. Norman and his crew will even provide the saw. So pack up the family and get out to the Arizona Christmas Tree Farm in Flagstaff to make your own special 2012 Christmas memories. io IF YOU GO

y definition, it’s a rare occurrence that a youth football club gets the chance to compete at championship level, so it’s no wonder the Anthem Jaguars’ trip to the American Youth Football National Championship in Kissimmee, Fla. has the local sports community giddy. The team of 9- and 10-year-olds won the wild-card bid and will be one of eight teams in the country making the trip.

chance to go with the wild card. There are 130 teams across the country and they chose us!” Coach Matt Carolan said. Carolan said all 18 players are going to the championship with a lot of family members joining them. The cost of the trip is posing a strain on some families.

“Many families are having to make some difficult decisions to make this possible, such as explaining to their children that they shouldn’t expect as many presents, or choosing to finance the trip over the next several months or “We lost in the semi-finals against the taking money from retirement funds…” Chandler Bears 13-6 and were told we said Sandy Seaton, the team’s business were out. Council Inches Forward on Quality-of-life Projects

efore renovation has even begun on its newly acquired building on Anthem Way, the Anthem Community Council authorized a proposal to commission designs on several qualityof-life projects identified in the CIMP and Swaback reports. At its Nov. 28 meeting, Council agreed to spend $32,500 with a landscape architectural firm for cost evaluation and conceptual design on six projects recommended by the Planning and Development Committee: 1) A west-side park with multi-use soccer fields on 8 to 10 acres of land at 46th Lane and Opportunity Way. 2) Improvements to the amphitheater. 3) I mprovements to Liberty Bell Park’s three-acre open area. 4) An off-leash dog park. 5) I ndoor racquetball courts built on to the Community Center (which could double as multi-purpose space when not in use). 6) N ew outdoor space for horseshoes, bocce ball and shuffleboard

Community Operations Officer Neal Shearer said the projects had been categorized into three tiers. Tier I encompasses projects that could feasibly be completed within five years. Tier II is projects for future consideration beyond five years. Tier III designates large scale projects requiring joint funding and partnerships. All of the six projects except the racquetball courts, were designated Tier I. Council President Craig Boates said, “I’m a little concerned that the Liberty Bell Park upgrade idea is not very well defined…. What if we are given a grandiose plan that’s not in our budget?” Shearer said there’s been some discussion about improving the Liberty Bell sports fields, or letting it serve as an outdoor game site, or a possible dog park. Environmental Planning Group will begin site assessments, preliminary design renderings, and cost evaluations on the six projects. A preliminary report is expected to come before the ACC Board in January. io

playing the final Thursday to decide the national champion. The Anthem Jaguars will join the Chandler Bears representing Arizona.

(From JAGUARS on Page 20)

A couple players will be traveling with coach chaperones as their family members can’t make the trip, according to Seaton.

“We won’t play them unless we both end up in the championship game,” Carolan said. “But if we do face them in that game, we will do it with smiles on our faces.”

Amy Osborn’s 10-year-old Mason plays linebacker for the Jaguars. “Mason is ecstatic. You know, when you’re at practice five days a week in 110-degree heat, you never dream you’ll be going to the championship in December. These kids never complain, they work hard and they play their hearts out and now they’re being rewarded.”

“I told Mason ‘I want you to go out there and play hard, but have fun. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity,” Osborn said. AYF will host a party for the players and their families at Universal Studios Thursday night. Go Jaguars! io

All eight teams will play in the series beginning Sunday Dec. 2, with the best two
