‘Tis the Season…

For Open Enrollment In&Out staff Photos

W

e may be deep in the rush of the holiday season, but another important time of year is upon us—open enrollment season. Finding the right school for your child is undoubtedly one of the best gifts you can ever give them. And, time may be of the essence. Arizona’s Open Enrollment Law requires school districts to allow families the opportunity to enroll in the school of their choice, space permitting. (See OPEN on Page 16)

DVUSD Focus Programs

Deer Valley has been charging schools with creating a focus curriculum to help encourage open enrollment to those schools.

Area charter and private schools also offer open enrollment this time of year, making this the month to determine if your child’s development at his current school is on target, or whether an alternative school may better suit his needs. Schools use the open enrollment period to help predict staffing and resource needs. Once classes are full, open enrollment often continues, but wait lists are formed and students are accepted as availability arises.

Until last year, the state relied on the AZ LEARNS Legacy accountability system which placed heavy emphasis on AIMS scores in defining a school’s achievement profile. Schools were given designations such as “excelling,” “highly performing,” or “underperforming.” But under Arizona’s A-F Accountability System, which became effective when Gov. Jan Brewer signed SB1286 into law, all state public schools (including charters) are evaluated equally based on two criteria: how many of its students are passing the AIMS each (See OPEN on Page 20)

Hate Brussels Sprouts? Try This!

R

aise your hand if your gut reaction upon hearing the words “Brussels sprouts” is, “Ick… yuck.” I honestly don’t know many who enjoy Brussels sprouts. I never did. I loathed the tiny, compressed balls of leaves. What did I like least about them? Of course, the smell. And, the taste. Oh, and the name. So, why an article dedicated to a vegetable I admit to hating? Well, I’ve seen the light. It was the light in the oven, actually, showcasing the miniature cabbages roasting their way to stardom. Mind you, I still cannot tolerate a boiled or steamed Brussels sprout, but I am now a huge fan of the enhanced taste of the roasted version of this vegetable. It always amazes me how different cooking methods alter the final taste of the same foods. Writing about a vegetable presents a rare opportunity for me to appease all the people (all five) who have

approached me with uninvited and uncomplimentary remarks about my recipes over the years. Descriptions such as “your artery-clogging recipe” and comments like “you should increase your time and speed on that treadmill after last week’s recipe!” can take a toll on a guy. Words hurt, people. But, I admit, I’m not very appeasing. I tried to reduce calories in this recipe, but failed. I just can’t water-down my favorite Brussels sprout recipe for five nay-sayers. Sorry. Now, raise your hand if you think bacon makes almost everything whole-hoggedly (poetic license) better. Including roasted Brussels sprouts. See? Overwhelming agreement. So, to my critics with their uninvited advice, here is some for you: Leave out the bacon… and stop harassing me on the treadmill. Ciao, Bella!

Brussels Sprouts 1 lb. Brussels sprouts, washed, trimmed and halved ½ lb. of raw bacon, roughly chopped ½ onion, diced large 2 Tbsp. olive oil ¼ tsp. fresh ground black pepper ½ tsp. salt

1 Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees. In large bowl, toss all ingredients together.

2 Place on a sheet pan and roast on top third of the oven for 40–45 minutes. Shake the ingredients in the pan every 15 minutes and rotate pan so Brussels sprouts roast evenly.

3 Remove when everything is nicely browned and crispy. Serves 4. Options: Some fellow Brussels-sprouts haters love this dish with the addition of chopped walnuts and crumbled Gorgonzola.

year (composite score), and the rate of student academic growth in a year (growth score). The composite score is comprised of the percent of students passing AIMS, factoring in English language learner reclassification—those now considered proficient in English— graduation rate and dropout rate. Half a school’s total growth score accounts for academic growth of all of its students, while the other half considers growth of the bottom 25 percent of a school’s learners. The growth score is determined by comparing the change in AIMS test scores from one year to the next for similarly achieving students across the state. Based on points earned in each

category, schools are issued a letter grade. [See chart, Page 21, for individual school grades.] In a letter to parents and stakeholders on the Arizona Department of Education website, State Superintendent of Public Instruction John Huppenthal said the new system removes new students and transfer students from the formula, emphasizing the learning results of fullacademic-year students. “In the end, information obtained… will serve as an important starting point for parents making decisions about their children’s education,” Huppenthal stated in the letter. All schools in the greater Anthem area are making the grade, with no school earning less than a “B.” SOURCE: Arizona Department of Education
