ASK DOREEN
THE GHOST OF SELLING SEASON
Dear Doreen, Spring is supposed to be real estate selling season but my house is sitting on the market. I have had only two showings in two months! It’s like my house is invisible to buyers. What should I do? Phantom Seller Dear PS, Here’s what’s going on: Of the 146 areas it tracks, realtor.com ranked Phoenix-Mesa 6th highest in the increase in inventory over the same month last year. And, our market ranked third overall in the total number of homes for sale. Higher inventory means your home is competing with more homes for a limited number of buyers. Couple that with fewer Send your real estate qualified buyers and the questions to Doreen.Drew result is a house that sits @ColdwellBanker.com on the market longer. In fact, the median age of inventory in this market is 59 days—an increase of 13.5 percent over the same period last year. My recommendation: Make sure your home shows really well, price it right and you select an agent who will market your home aggressively to increase your exposure in this competitive market. Doreen

Q: A:
Don’t Put it Off
“Watching my friend go through the trauma of having to find assistance for her mom after she broke her hip has been a real eye-opener. How do we prevent this sudden stress with our mom?” When you’re dealing with emotions, finances and, in most cases, time restraints, nothing can be more stressful! Our best advice: Do your homework now. If the thought has crossed your mind, it’s time to start researching.
Anthem Senior Living (ASL) and Anthem Senior Retreat (ASR) are licensed on all levels of care and can accommodate only 10 residents each. We are licensed to give peronalized care at every level: Independent Living, Supervisory Level, Personal Level and Directed Level. We also specialize in Memory Care. All rooms are private and come furnished with flat screen TVs. Medication Management, home-cooked meals, assistance with showers, toileting and dressing as needed, daily acitivities, entertainment—It’s all included! And your monthly rate will NEVER increase! It’s a home-like atmosphere with 24/7 care and pampering that is affordable in beautiful Anthem! Call or email to schedule a tour. Seeing the luxurious options available so close to home will alleviate a good amount of stress when the time comes.
Independent Living? Assisted Living? Living with Me (or my brother/sister)? Ask the experts! Cheryl Ables began working
in the senior care field 10 years ago, after taking care of her parents and grandparent while raising her children. Sam Ile and his family have been in the business of assisted living homes for more than 20 years. Sam and Cheryl are approaching ten years as owners of Anthem Senior Living. They also operate Eldermom, a senior placement service and, now, Anthem Senior Retreat Assisted Living home. Sam and Cheryl are experts at the unique challenges posed by aging parents. Have a question? Write or call today! 602-909-9550,
cheryl@eldermom.com. Help is on the way!

Anthem Teen Gets Part on Nick reyson Bacal, 13, scored a speaking role on a TV G episode to be aired nationally Thursday, April 10. The young thespian plays the part of Dennis in the latest episode of Nick at Nite’s sitcom, “See Dad Run.”
“I felt like I had to be really professional,” Greyson said. “I had my own trailer… It had my name on it which made it even cooler… There was free food everywhere.” Greyson is just doing what he loves, said his mom Teresa Bacal. And, he’s putting in lots of hard work, submitting about one or two auditions a week, she said. “See Dad Run” starring Scott Baio, is Nick at Nite’s first original scripted comedy series, airing its third and final season later this year.

Western-themed party with dinner, DJ, live auction and chance to win resort getaways and prizes are all part of an evening with an even greater purpose—to help save the animals. Anthem Pets invites the community for an evening out at Peaks and Valleys Restaurant during its annual spring fundraiser. Have dinner on the patio overlooking the sunset and stay for the fun. Prizes include packages for resorts, spas, personal trainers and even a flight school. Tickets are $30 and the proceeds help Anthem Pets cover the cost of
medical expenses for the many lost or abandoned animals it cares for during the year. io

hristi Dodson is a survivor. The mother of four is happily married, works as the area sales manager for ZMC Hotels, and is owner of the growing and successful Kid Co. children’s consignment shop in Anthem. But things haven’t always been this good. See, Dodson is a product of the system, so to speak. As a child, she lived in homeless shelters, foster care, even tents. “You should have seen me!” Dodson said. She was a self-described mess. She was the good kid, though, never getting in the kind of trouble one might worry about with a
kid in the system. She was one of the lucky ones and, at 16, found herself with foster parents who truly cared about her. “I owe them so much,” Dodson said. In her early years, Dodson learned how to make do with very little. So it’s no wonder she finds herself owner of a children’s consignment store, re-selling high-quality items to those who can use them. But Dodson’s real success becomes evident in the goods that don’t sell or are not quite up to the shop’s standards. “When those things come into the store and they don’t move, I have a hard time sending those things away,” Dodson said. “There’s a kid in me that would jump at THURSDAY, APRIL 10, 2014 |

CURRENTS » PEOPLE those items.” So she goes to great lengths to make sure as much gets used as possible. Dodson views the shop as an opportunity to serve. “I feel like it’s been meaningful in a humanitarian aspect because I can help people,” Dodson said. Step 1: Donation Days The annual event will allow folks in need to come in and help themselves. For no charge, they’ll fill a large bag full of clothes and things that can make a meaningful difference in their lives. “It makes me humble and proud,” said Dodson; “The people who come and have need—they hug us.” And for those who need larger items, Dodson lets them take one per vehicle in order to spread the good around. Step 2: Nonprofit Hand-off Dodson distributes what’s left after Donation Days to nonprofits—such as UMOM New Day
Centers—serving homeless families and the foster community. Step 3: It’s a Big World If the non-profits don’t take it, she finds a third world country that will. Step 4: Avoiding Landfill And for those clothes and textiles that are no longer usable in their current form, Dodson gets them to a company that recycles them into insulation material. In one way or another, the donations survive, making the world a bit better. Just like Dodson.

Changing Times
In 1910, this 12-year-old paper boy—not Chris Prickett—worked five hours a day and 11 on Saturday. When he wasn’t selling papers, he delivered packages for the Reynold’s candy shop.
LIBRARY OF CONGRESS
Life Lessons From That First Job By Chris Prickett cprickett@anthemnews.com
I
t’s amazing how big things seem when you’re a kid. My paper route (circa 1972) consisted of about 45 deliveries Monday through Saturday, and 60 on Sunday. Back then, it seemed to take forever AND I had to do it before school… ugh! In hindsight, I pretty much rode my bike a couple of blocks, barely slowing down to sling my daily deliveries onto my customer’s driveway (or bush or roof or gutter or under the porch). Probably 60 minutes, tops, maybe 90 on Sunday. I was an average paperboy. I never made “carrier of the month,” which was pretty big deal because you got your picture in the paper (and we all know how I love
to see my face in print). I hated Fridays because that was collecting day, when I had to actually interact with my clientele and ask them to pay the bill. This was also the time when they provided what we now call “customer feedback.” As another school year comes to a close, lots of kids will be starting their first job. Some will shine, others will stumble. This has absolutely no reflection on whom or what they will become. It will be their first job, but it will definitely not be their last. Think of it as “basic training.” My first job taught me life has rewards beyond going out for ice cream and consequences beyond losing TV privileges. Bosses tend to be less forgiving than parents and if you can’t get your butt
out of bed, there’s another person right behind you who can—which is how, incidentally, I lost my first job, if I remember correctly. I also learned that people who don’t pay for their newspaper stop getting their newspaper. The biggest lesson I learned (and hated to learn) was that life is not always fair. One sweet lady tipped me every week no matter how mediocre my service, and some customers never tipped, even if I hand delivered with a golden bow. If my bike had a flat, I walked. If it rained, I got wet. If the delivery truck came late, I waited. Ironically, as I sit here at 5:26 a.m. putting the final touches on this column, it occurs to me that 42 years later I’m still “delivering the paper.” Lesson learned. io
