Dog-friendly hotels — not so much. I knew it was only a matter of time before our aging air conditioning units called it quits. With rather large dogs, I also knew a hotel was not an option if our units died in the middle of the peak season. My wife and I decided to look into replacement before the inevitable occurred. We had five quotes from both local and larger valley contractors. Travis with ProSkill impressed us with his promptness, knowledge, and thoroughness. Travis was the only contractor to do a calculation on our house, then come back and present a proposal in person. I knew I had my guy! Their pricing was beyond fair for top quality units, especially when considering all the extra work they did beyond just “changing out the boxes”, as Travis says. The final install was a work of art, and the team cleaned up with care. I will gladly continue to refer Travis and the ProSkill team to all my neighbors and friends. - Charles H., Magic and Zoe, Anthem Resident

HOW TO SELL HIGH Dear Doreen, I don’t get what’s going on with my house. I listed it 3 months ago. I have to get a certain amount from the sale but my agent continues to ask me for a price reduction. She’s angry because I insisted on my price. But… we don’t get showings! We have had 2 in 3 months. What can I do besides lower the price? Need advice Dear Need, I understand your problem. The only way you will get your price is to have your home in pristine movein condition. I do mean PRISTINE. No drawers open, no dust or clutter, clean windows, perfect and trimmed landscaping, shining counters, spotless mirrors, immaculate floors, fresh scent, updated paint colors… Buyers want a home that’s been wellmaintained. They don’t Send your real estate want to wonder what questions to Doreen.Drew needs to be fixed next or @ColdwellBanker.com how much it will cost. If you have even one of the above mentioned, you may not get an offer. Still, qualified buyers might not even see your home if they have restricted their search to a lower price range. Those who do quickly realize there are homes in the same price range that offer more value. Hope that helps. Good luck! Doreen

Friday Nights in May
T
ake advantage of glorious evening weather and unwind with family and neighbors at Anthem’s annual Music in May. The Friday night concerts invite dancing, romping and a patchwork of picnics. The gourmet food trucks return this year for the first Friday only, leaving the ice cream truck and local restaurants to pick up the slack for the remaining four concerts. If take-out is part of your picnic plans, call well in advance. Last year, concertgoers reported wait times of 40 minutes
at the food trucks, and Q-to-U BBQ recommended calling an hour ahead. This laid-back event is a great de-stresser after a long work/school week, with not much to worry about except possibly losing the little ones in the crowd. Outfit them with bright colors and easy-to-spot glow sticks. Arrange a meetup spot in case you get separated. Take a picture of the kids just before the concert; If you need help finding them, you can show people exactly what they look like—right down to the outfit. If nobody gets lost, you’ll have a nice souvenir.

eautiful, cool Prescott transforms a rough, otherwise mundane asphalt parking lot into a giant grey canvas for the sixth annual Chalk It Up! festival Saturday and Sunday, May 3 & 4. Anyone interested in producing a colorful creation need only show up, register, and find their assigned square of asphalt with a free box of chalk to create your own public art masterpiece. This traditional art form has been celebrated in cities throughout Europe and America for many years.
Chalk it Up! welcomes all ages and skill levels. Or, simply walk around and mingle with the many multi-generational street artists. Several local and visiting artists will be present and will create some impressive, yet temporary, chalk masterpieces. It all began when some Prescott volunteers got together in 2009 and decided a chalk art street festival would be a delightful, community public art event for their city. More than 500 artists participated in that first event. Last year, participants exceeded 1,100. Even more artists are expected this weekend,
Make that short drive to downtown Prescott to draw or just enjoy the many artistic offerings. Remember to bring a good hat, a bottle of water and some SPF. io IF YOU GO

oulder Creek High School’s Academic Decathlon team will compete against 51 other teams at the National Competition in Hawaii Thursday, April 24 to Saturday, April 26. And the brainiacs need your help.

FENCE
I Recommend the Dreaded Procedure By Chris Prickett cprickett@anthemnews.com
C
olorectal cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the United States. It also killed my father at age 70… Do I have your attention? Because of my family history, I got my first colonoscopy at age 39, and they found a polyp (non-cancerous, thank God). Since then, it’s on my schedule every five years. The ol’ “Kodak in the keister” as my gastroenterologist likes to call it. The only thing worse than a gastroenterologist with a sense of humor is a gastroenterologist with no sense of humor. My guy even has his assistant capitalize the first three letters of his title on his name badge… Yuck-yuck. If you aren’t at risk, the American Cancer Society recommends you get tested at age 50, and then every 10 years after that. The pre-procedure preparation is the worst part. First, there’s the diet, restricted to clear liquids and nothing that’s red, blue or purple. (You need to ask?) Then you’re required to drink the “gallon of humiliation,” something they call polyethylene glycol. Ironically, or maybe not, this compound is also found in the fuel that powers a Trident ballistic missile.
Drinking this concoction renders the patient housebound for reasons that should be obvious after the missile-fuel comment. They used to have you mix a powder with a sports drink. Now you just pick up a jug, pre-mixed, at the pharmacy. To this day, the sight of “original” Gatorade makes me squeamish. I’m guessing the fine folks at Gatorade had something to do with that change in delivery systems. I have to tell you from experience, the procedure itself is quite uneventful. I’ve been given light anesthesia for all of mine, and actually remember watching part of one. It was kind of an out-of- body experience, except someone was actually in my body at the time. When it’s done, my wife takes me out for a big greasy burger and a chocolate shake on the way home. I wash that down with a strong cup of coffee, take a threehour nap, and I’m good for another five years. If you’re at risk or of age, I very strongly suggest you tough it out and schedule one right away. It’s not going to kill you, although the alternative just might. io [For newly approved, less invasive screening methods, see the May issue of Luminate, inserted in this magazine.]
