ASK DOREEN
WHY BUY WHEN YOU CAN RENT?
Dear Doreen, We finally got a contract on our house and will be moving in a month. Yes, we are thrilled! Here’s my question, we can buy again (barely) but I’m wondering if there is an advantage to simply renting. After trying to sell my house for months, I don’t know if I want to ever own again! Stung by Ownership Dear Stung, The biggest advantage, in case you forgot, is you get tax benefits that aren’t available to renters. If you’re not sure of how much Send your real estate of a write off it brings questions to Doreen.Drew you, contact any tax @ColdwellBanker.com professional. There is also so much more freedom when you own. You can paint, renovate and change the house and yard to suit your tastes. As a tenant, these are generally not options available to you. I like the idea of renting if you are moving to a new area so you can get a sense of the neighborhood and the community. If you decide to rent until you find your perfect home, remember to get renter’s insurance. My personal opinion. Good luck! Doreen

Q: A:
Don’t Put it Off
“Watching my friend go through the trauma of having to find assistance for her mom after she broke her hip has been a real eye-opener. How do we prevent this sudden stress with our mom?” When you’re dealing with emotions, finances and, in most cases, time restraints, nothing can be more stressful! Our best advice: Do your homework now. If the thought has crossed your mind, it’s time to start researching.
Anthem Senior Living (ASL) and Anthem Senior Retreat (ASR) are licensed on all levels of care and can accommodate only 10 residents each. We are licensed to give peronalized care at every level: Independent Living, Supervisory Level, Personal Level and Directed Level. We also specialize in Memory Care. All rooms are private and come furnished with flat screen TVs. Medication Management, home-cooked meals, assistance with showers, toileting and dressing as needed, daily acitivities, entertainment—It’s all included! And your monthly rate will NEVER increase! It’s a home-like atmosphere with 24/7 care and pampering that is affordable in beautiful Anthem! Call or email to schedule a tour. Seeing the luxurious options available so close to home will alleviate a good amount of stress when the time comes.
Independent Living? Assisted Living? Living with Me (or my brother/sister)? Ask the experts! Cheryl Ables began working
in the senior care field 10 years ago, after taking care of her parents and grandparent while raising her children. Sam Ile and his family have been in the business of assisted living homes for more than 20 years. Sam and Cheryl are approaching ten years as owners of Anthem Senior Living. They also operate Eldermom, a senior placement service and, now, Anthem Senior Retreat Assisted Living home. Sam and Cheryl are experts at the unique challenges posed by aging parents. Have a question? Write or call today! 602-909-9550,
cheryl@eldermom.com. Help is on the way!

Readers react to the opening of Starbuck’s in place of Tully’s inside Fry’s. Sad, I wish they would have left it to be a Tully’s. I’m from Washington and get enough Starbucks on every corner. Anthem truly needs another coffee place to gather similar to Elevate at Norterra, or even better, Lola Coffee in Phoenix! —Kathy Dahm Yup! I am speechless still that this will be 200 feet apart from the existing one. This will be the fourth one in Anthem now. Wish Dutch Bros. would open a location here. —Brian D. Riek Daisy Mountain Coffee Roasters is opening up a location next to Albertsons. The owner has been roasting coffee for 15+ years and it’s their second location. They are a million times better than Starbucks and a heck of a lot cheaper. First location is on Carefree Highway and 7th Street. —Stephen Miller

Let’s Ride*! E very year about now, motorcycles flood Arizona roadways. This is the most wonderful time of year for bikers, whether you’re saddling a bagger or a rice rocket—or you have to buy another new battery for your dormant bike. The weather is perfect and, of course, there’s Bike Week.
Charity Rides to Join
Five days of pre-rally events culminate in Cyclefest at WestWorld in Scottsdale from Wednesday, April 2 to Sunday, April 6. The event includes rides, vendors, stunt shows, people watching and bike gawking. Preview some of the newest bikes and gear. Big name rockers such as Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top perform live.
A 200-mile charity ride includes breakfast, T-shirt, live music, promotional merchandise, live auction, prizes for best/worst hand, prizes for furthest distance and raffles.
But, for all the studs, and leather and decibels, a big part of Bike Week is its softer side: Many of the events are charity fundraisers amassing money for everything from food banks to hospitals to children’s camps.

achel Chazan and Taylor Marchesani have had enough. The sixth grade athletes want equal treatment and they’re hitting the pavement to garner support. The High Desert Little League softball players wrote a petition demanding equality between baseball and softball and have about 200 signatures to support them.
Rachel Chazan, left, and Taylor Marchesani are filing a petition with High Desert Little League for equal treatment for the softball teams.
“We wrote our petition, me and Rachel. We have been playing softball for about five seasons and we’ve noticed there are many inequalities between baseball and softball,” said and communication. The petition also notes that HDLL’s bylaws are written exclusively for baseball. There is no mention of softball according to the girls. Webster admitted there are no local league rules for softball, but there is a league rule book for softball. He said the board is looking at the local league rules and is working on addressing that discrepancy. But more than anything, the girls want to bring attention to the fact the softball fields in Anthem’s community park aren’t as well maintained as the baseball fields. They say the baseball fields are groomed, sometimes daily, whereas the softball outfields haven’t been overseeded in years. HDLL rents field space from Anthem; Maintenance of the fields falls on the Anthem Community Council. ACC Spokesperson Kristi Northcutt said, “The practice of not overseeding the outfield grass promotes a healthy root system and faster ‘green-up’ as we move toward summer.” And, she said, outfields are not overseeded because they are used as backup fields while the baseball fields are being overseeded. Rachel and Taylor wrote in their petition the boys play two games a week while the softball teams play just one game a week. But, according to Webster, the girls will play two or more games a week starting in April with the addition of inter-league play between HDLL and Cave Creek’s

all new equipment for softball this year.
Webster admitted that in years past, softball was pushed to the wayside and baseball was given most of the attention. But, he said, that is changing.
The board, he said, is open and receptive to the girls’ petition. “...I’m here for every young man and young lady in the league,” Webster said. Rachel and Taylor plan to present the petition at the April HDLL board meeting.
“Anything this league does from now on, since October, has not been baseball or softball, it has been and… I don’t ever want it to happen again where the boys get something and the girls get pushed aside or forgotten about,” he said, pointing out the board purchased
“...We hope that instead of only talking about baseball, they’ll recognize softball and they’ll reseed our fields. We want to feel as important as baseball,” Taylor said. io
