How to Avoid Craigslist Scammers Dear Doreen, I saw one of your listings for lease on Craigslist for $700/mo. I wondered if it was sold as I’m seeing it on your website as still for sale. It’s at [address withheld] in anthem. The rent seemed way low for anthem… and it’s furnished! The owner said he was planning on moving in but family issues has kept him in another state. It all seems too good to be true. —Careful on Craigslist. Dear C.C., I’m so glad you reached out to me as that home is not sold! You escaped a scam. as much as I like Craigslist, there is a dark side to it... Here’s how to identify a Craigslist rental scam:

1. It’s too good to be true. Check out enough listings to get a sense of market. 2. When you show up to see the property, it’s already been rented. But, there happens to be another one available nearby for just a little bit more. Start your search early so you’re not pressured to take this bait-and-switch. 3. Deposit funds must be wired to another city. Don’t send checks or money wires to people you don’t know. Who is really listing the home on Craiglist? If you can get an email address, you’ll know for sure. or, Google the address, as you did. You found the home listed with me and one quick email saved you thousands of dollars. —Doreen

The Real Heroes

W

e would like to thank the members of the Daisy Mountain, Phoenix and Glendale fire departments for their excellent response to the fire Sunday, March 25 at 39840 N. Messner in Anthem. Upon arrival they were in complete control of the situation and the sheriff’s department took over crowd control [hundreds of onlookers reportedly gathered nearby] for everyone’s safety. We saw a fireman jump off the truck pulling a hose and stand right in front of the garage spraying water directly onto the intense flames. Another fireman on the ladder truck 100 feet above the house was spraying water down. On that Sunday night, we saw in action the choice these people make to serve and protect life and limb from danger in our community. If they got [paid] half of what a ball player earns, it would not even be enough! Marjorie Syarto, George Jacobs & George Eccleston Anthem Got Something to Say? Write to letters@ inandoutaz.com. he Anthem Community Council announced Tuesday, March 20 that Holly Matson beat out Roger Willis for Country Club representation on the Council Board of Directors, and Robert Linder prevailed over Jon Salmen, Billy Gwin and incumbent Bob Copen for Parkside representation. The Parkside “Race”

Robert Linder, left, (Anthem Parkside) and Holly Matson, (Anthem Country Club), will be seated at an upcoming Council meeting.

A selection committee will conduct interviews and make recommendations to the board for the two-year term positions. New board members will be seated at Parkside’s Annual Meeting Thursday, April 19 at 7 p.m. at the Anthem Community Center. Election of officers will also take place at this meeting.

Arson Property Goes to Auction in May Property Auction Thursday, May 17 10 a.m. West Court building 111 South 3rd Ave., Phoenix

The winning bid must be in cash or certified funds only. After the auction, the previous owner has a 30-day period to pay off their judgment to reclaim the home. After that period, the new owner is free to rebuild a home with an approved Pulte floor plan.

A

lmost two years after the home at 3727 W. Ashton Court was destroyed by fire, the property is going to auction. The 11,066-square-foot culde-sac lot near Anthem’s signature waterfalls, has been an eyesore since 2010 when the 3,500-square-foot home succumbed to arson. The new owner must rebuild a home on the property and can opt to build a different model, if Parkside’s Architectural Review Committee and Maricopa County agree. The new home cannot be custom, according to Anthem Council spokesperson Barb Evans— it must be a Pulte floor plan that was offered in Anthem. No one was injured in the fire. io APRIL 5, 2012 |

cDowell Mountain Regional Park just might be the crown jewel of the grand regional park system of Maricopa County. On the eastern slopes of the McDowell Mountains in the lower Verde River basin, this desert park provides a wonderful place for hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders, picnickers and even campers to spend the day. McDowell Mountain Regional Park encompasses 21,099 acres of virgin Sonoran Desert vegetation with wide desert washes and a terrain of small hills and rugged ridges. Visitors are treated to spectacular views of the Verde River Valley and the many surrounding mountain ranges, including Four Peaks and the majestic Superstition Mountains. Watching a full moon rise over the Superstition Mountains and the Verde River Valley from the park’s picnic area creates a unique and memorable Arizona experience. McDowell Mountain Park has more than 50 miles of multi-use trails ranging in length from the 0.5-mile Hilltop Trail to the 15.3-mile Pemberton (Continued on Page 23)

Springtime brings out the local rattlesnakes, so keep a sharp eye out for those desert critters that sometimes stop to sun themselves on the trails.

Two Wheels, Four Legs, or Seated McDowell Mountain Park is home to three loops of competitive tracks totaling 15 miles in length.
