Vet Hospital’s Compassion Helped with Goodbye

I

would like to share my feelings about how fortunate we are to have Dr. Kirstin Young and her staff here in Anthem at Daisy Mountain Veterinary Hospital. My little dog Molly, a BichonFrisĂŠ, gave me 13 years of companionship and love, until just recently when kidney malfunction made it impossible for her to remain here on Earth with me. It was my good luck that a friend referred me to Dr. Young. Her compassion, knowledge and sincere concern helped both Molly and me through the difficult two-and-a-half weeks before it was time to say goodbye. The expertise and empathy of Dr. Young and her staff was extraordinary, and I thank them from both Molly and me.

Rerouting Dangerous U-turns Look for this newly adopted universal traffic signal at the new dedicated U-turn lane at the south end of Boulder Creek High School.

By Nadine Shaalan nshaalan@anthemnews.com

W

e’ve seen it happen all over town. People making left turns in places not intended for left turning. One of the most abused intersections is likely at the northern exit of Boulder Creek High School, where northbounders have a choice of turning right, proceeding more than 1,500 feet south to King Drive and flipping a U-turn... or, shooting straight out of the parking lot through the median, and performing an illegal left. That dangerous maneuver will soon be thwarted when Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) finishes improvements to that stretch of Gavilan Peak Parkway. The construction is underway and will continue weekends only through 17 |

mid-May. The project includes removal of part of the median near the lighted T-intersection at the south entrance of BCHS, and the installation of a dedicated U-turn lane. (U-turns are currently prohibited at this intersection.) According to MCDOT, the project includes the installation of a newly adopted universal traffic signal that displays a lighted U-turn symbol during the green, yellow and red light phasing cycles. The signal will be the first of its kind in Maricopa County. Additionally, the opening in the median allowing northbound traffic to turn into the north entrance of BCHS will be moved to the north. T

he Opus neighborhood pocket park in Anthem’s panhandle has been renovated to include a bottle rider and much-needed shade structure over the play area. A keystone wall, paver walkway and picnic area with a picnic table have also been installed to satisfy residents’ request to bring the park up to the standard of the rest of Anthem Parkside. The Neighborhood Parks Committee has its eye out for additional improvements to pocket parks in Anthem Parkside. Most of the requested improvements involve shade and lighting, both problematic, said Parkside Community Manager Annette McCarthy. The shade structures become the target of vandalism, said McCarthy, and lighting, while typically considered a deterrent to vandalism, actually seems to facilitate it in this case.

Caepe School Seeks Charter Status

B

ig changes might be under way at the Caepe School for the 2014-2015 school year. Tamara Lee, head of the tuition-based private school with a college preparatory focus, said the Caepe is applying to become a tuition-free charter. Still in the preliminary stages, the school’s administrators are collecting intent-to-enroll forms from prospective parents to present to the Arizona State Board for Charter Schools as an indicator of the number of families seeking tuition-free enrollment at

the Caepe. “Currently enrolled students and families will have first-priority admissions. We are excited about this endeavor and will share information... as it becomes available to us,” Lee said.

The public is welcome to complete a form if interested in a Caepe education, however, it will not guarantee placement. The school serves students in grades K–8, and also operates a preschool. Info 623-551-7808.

Building Community… Take a bicycle tour down Mural Trail in downtown Phoenix and discover the art that is changing the face of the city.

H

ere’s a fun 10-mile bike ride through downtown Phoenix that allows riders to discover local artists on the Phoenix Urban Mural Trail.

It’s New! During the past five years, a group of local artists have embarked on a mission to define their neighborhoods through art. Three central Phoenix neighborhoods have become the outdoor galleries for large-scale wall murals: 16th Street, Grand Avenue and Roosevelt Row. Here, the walls of local strip-malls and once neglected alleys have transformed into concrete canvases for such artists as Lalo Cota, Joerael Elliot, Rose Johnson, Luster Kaboom and more. The mission of this public art program is to create murals that are educational, cultural and positive. The work replaced damaging graffiti with quality public art. The many murals along 16th Street are a part of the Calle 16 Project, whose goal is “to build community, one wall at a time.”

One Wall at a Time The Barrio Café at 16th Street and East Windsor Avenue is the epicenter of this project with some 20 murals on its walls and nearby alleys and stores. Begin your bike tour here (or just enjoy some fine Mexican dining). A few blocks south on 16th Street, you’ll find another cluster of murals on the walls of The Hive, a street art gallery with a delicious new coffee shop called the Mud Dauber. Further south, between 16th Street and 7th Avenue, Roosevelt Row boasts award-winning restaurants, galleries, boutiques and more large-scale wall murals. See a map of the 10-mile bike route at the Phoenix Taco website, phxtaco.com/calle-16-mural-detour-central.

very community has some gems: Those key people who help put the area on the proverbial map. I’d argue Anthem has more gems per capita than most. You know, those remarkable people who give back in big ways, those inspiring individuals who fought disease and won, or the gifted ones who excel at their craft. Then rarely, you meet someone who seems to embody all these things. Meet Kazu Okutomi; volunteer, cancer survivor, passionate photographer. (See THIRD LIFE on Page 24)

(From THIRD LIFE on Page 23)

Okutomi moved to Anthem in 2000 almost arbitrarily. When you ask why Anthem, he says, “I don’t know. I had no friends here, no connection whatsoever.” Then, with a charming grin, he adds, “Now, I fall in love with it.” Born in Tokyo in 1939, Okutomi was born into creativity. His father was an ice sculptor at Tokyo’s Imperial Hotel. Okutomi found his passion not in frozen water, but a viewfinder. But he said he doesn’t take photographs, he makes them. He started a studio in Tokyo, but in 1969, he came to America to study photography. “I wanted to come to the U.S., the top photography place in the world. I wanted to put myself in a position to compete with American photographers,” he said. Okutomi’s desire and work ethic caught the eye of his peers and American advertisers, but it was his style, drawn from his Japanese roots,

that set him apart in the intensely competitive world of commercial photography. “My style is simple and clean,” he said. “It’s appealing to American advertising.” But putting food on the table was tough. He first landed in New York, where money and work were tight. Then to Detroit, where he caught a break shooting the newest model cars. Just as work was revving up, a training visa problem sent him packing to Chicago. But life still wasn’t easy. Okutomi survived by eating 25-cent french fries from Burger King and moonlighting as a waiter. Eventually, the scrimp and struggle paid off.

Making it Big

With his vision, the studio started to land big clients like Honeywell, Motorola, IBM and Playboy. Okutomi attributed his success to being able “to take ordinary products and make them unordinary.” Even so, Okutomi, humble and thoughtful said, “Lucky I survived all those years.”

Okutomi enlisted the help of an Agave researcher as he worked to master light and composition on his prickly subject. 24 |

IN&OUT

| THURSDAY, APRIL 25, 2013

The Big “C”

Okutomi was enjoying his work “making” photographs, and making money when cancer forced his retirement. For reasons still unknown to him, Anthem became home. It is here that he retired and recovered. Here that he chose to give back through volunteer work at the Mayo Clinic. And, here that he created some of the most extraordinary work of his career. Holding true to his simplistic style, Okutomi’s work turns the familiar to unfamilar. When you see his photographs of buildings, bullet casings, cactus and cowboys, it is as if you’ve never seen those objects before. With purpose, he chooses “subjects people don’t often pay attention to.” And like his work, his reason is uncomplicated: “To make people think ‘this subject is beautiful.’ “

Subject: Agaves

The latest focus for Okutomi: the omnipresent agave. At the start of this project, he sought out an Agave researcher to learn more about his prickly subject. The finished images demonstrate Okutomi’s mastery of light and composition. He renders the Agave almost as sculpture: delicate and sensual.

His Third Life

Okutomi really doesn’t try to unravel why he chose Anthem. But when one looks at his images of Southwestern icons, you can see he has truly and finally found home, or what he calls his third life. In the process, he helps the rest of us see his home, our home, in a whole new light. And he reminds us, by example, to remain true to our passion. “My life is more meaningful to me if I create.” io

t’s almost here. That oh-so-hot weather that sends us desert-dwellers scurrying indoors for relief. But before we hit triple digits, we can dance in the cool grass beneath starry skies at the annual Music in May concert series in the community park. The series of Friday night concerts kicks off May 3, with country and Southern rock from SouthBound. And, a new amenity for concert-goers: Food trucks will roll into the park, so leave those coolers and picnic baskets at home and enjoy a variety of foods like what LunchaLibre and Satay Hut have to offer. According to its website, LunchaLibre brings classically trained chefs together with fresh local ingredients to create restaurantquality selections of Mexican, Asian or Arizona-inspired dishes, and Satay Hut offers fresh meats and tofu marinated, skewered and grilled. “We thought it would be a great kickoff to the concert series this year with a new and exciting experience for Anthem residents,” said Anthem Community Council Special Events Coordinator Michele DeMichele. But Council is proceeding cautiously with

this new feature. So far, food trucks are scheduled for the first Friday only. “We are using the opening concert as a way for us to assess the level of success this type of amenity may or may not offer,” said DeMichele. It’s not yet clear how many food trucks will be on site, but you can bet a successful turnout will bring an encore. The ice cream truck, a fixture at community park events, will be at each concert. io

hen May brings music to the park, families pack up and head out for a fun-filled evening among a crowd of hundreds. For those with younger kids, the fun can quickly turn to panic when the sun goes down and the kids can’t be easily spotted dancing, rolling and romping in the grass. Recognizing these safety concerns, the Anthem Community Council is working on installing interim lighting in time for the event. Community Operations Officer Neal Shearer said, “Additional lighting will be positioned on existing poles and structures to light the perimeter of the amphitheater area.” The Council board deemed it critical to move forward with the plan during the April 4 meeting. Long-range plans include permanent lighting improvements to the area.

Tips For Kids Designate a Meeting Spot. Before the kids get distracted by the scene, in the event your kids get separated from you. (The front of the stage, for example.) Leave Your Skateboard Behind. In an effort to ensure an enjoyable experience for concertgoers, ACC is discouraging the use of skateboards and scooters in and around the amphitheater area during the concerts.

After several years of this light-hearted festival, I’ve figured out what I love most about it. 1

Watching all the little kids getting their dance on in the magical mosh pit at the front of the stage.

THINGS I LOVE ABOUT

MUSIC IN MAY

2 Knowing I’m no longer one of the frantic parents down there with them, redirecting their outof-control pirouettes away from other kids and the band equipment, losing them, finding them, and then realizing I found the wrong kid. (I will, on occasion, join a search party just for old times’ sake.) 3

Exhaling after finding my spot, knowing that for the next three hours I don’t have to move, talk, or do anything else unless I absolutely choose to.

4

Feeling the breeze from the lake, in what’s left of my hair, just as the sun goes down.

5

6

Running into friends and neighbors that I’m usually too busy to talk with, and talking with them about the “good ol’ days” of 7-to-10 years ago.

Getting something for free, as in, five straight Friday nights of free music! OK, technically my HOA dues help to fund the event, but I don’t count my beans like that.

7

Inviting my friends from other parts of town and rubbing their noses in my far superior amenities. (You do too, I just admit it!) “Yeah, we Anthemites do this every year, don’t you guys do this?”

8

Having my son fetch me a chocolate-covered frozen banana (sometimes two) from the Bright Angel ice cream truck…even though I have to cover his selection and never get any change back.

9

Embarrassing my teenage daughters with my bad singing, bad jokes, and bad concert-wear selection.

10 Realizing that if I were doing this same thing back East, I’d be either slathered with bug spray or covered with bites… Then calling my family back East and rubbing their noses in it! io THURSDAY, APRIL 25, 2013 |

posts, summarize food articles, make a mental food inventory, and then determine what I’m in the mood to eat. If I had to guess, I would say I have 3,000 food thoughts every 24 hours. For my analytical friends who try to figure everything out, yep, that’s about two food thoughts every minute.

1 large russet potato, peeled and diced small

As the snow piled up on the freeway just the other month, traffic slowed and I-17 looked like crash-derby central. I was contemplating whether the collisions were due to the gauzy winter-wonderland effect the snow had on people, or the, “I never drove in these conditions, but I’m still going to maintain the 75-mph-speed-limit” mentality. My thoughts were focused less on food and more on survival—and a stop at the grocery store certainly wasn’t on the menu. I had to reach deep into my cranial recipe box for tonight’s meal.

2 Tbsp. olive oil

My Dad grew up on this dish; I’m sure glad he passed it down to the next generation. This is one of the few pasta dishes that allows the pasta to be boiled with the other ingredients creating a starchy, silky and smooth sauce. This is a simple meal that can be prepared easily; very little thought and money are needed. I hope you don’t have 3,000 food thoughts a day. There is more to life than food… so I’ve been told. Ciao, Bella! io Watch Larry Make This: cookeatsleep.com

2 celery stalks, washed and diced small ¼ red onion, diced small 2 garlic cloves, peeled and sliced thick 1lb. pasta shells, medium size 7 cups water 1 ¼ tsp. salt 1

/8 tsp. black pepper

Pecorino Romano cheese

Directions

1 In a medium stock pot, sauté onions, garlic and celery in olive oil for about 7 minutes, until they get a little color. 2 Add the potato, salt, pepper, and water. Raise the heat and bring to a boil for seven minutes. 3 Add the pasta and cook, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes. 4 Serve immediately, sprinkled with Pecorino Romano cheese. Serves 4.

• •

Larry’s Tips After plating, each dish can be drizzled with a bit of extra-virgin olive oil. When a potato square gets nestled in a pasta shell, it’s a bonus. Take a moment to appreciate it. NOTE: This dish works at room temperature for a Music in May picnic.
