We are Local
Dog-friendly hotels — not so much. I knew it was only a matter of time before our aging air conditioning units called it quits. With rather large dogs, I also knew a hotel was not an option if our units died in the middle of the peak season. My wife and I decided to look into replacement before the inevitable occurred. We had five quotes from both local and larger valley contractors. Travis with ProSkill impressed us with his promptness, knowledge, and thoroughness. Travis was the only contractor to do a calculation on our house, then come back and present a proposal in person. I knew I had my guy! Their pricing was beyond fair for top quality units, especially when considering all the extra work they did beyond just “changing out the boxes”, as Travis says. The final install was a work of art, and the team cleaned up with care. I will gladly continue to refer Travis and the ProSkill team to all my neighbors and friends. - Charles H., Magic and Zoe, Anthem Resident
We live in Anthem. And every representative of ProSkill lives in Anthem, Tramonto or Desert Hills.
We Advertise Our Prices Rather than “matching” the other guys, we believe in offering the best rates from the beginning. ProSkill has the prices the other guys have to try to match.

Supply Drive Helps Students Get Back to School
ou know how hard it is to get your kids ready for school. Imagine how hard it is for a child who is homeless or at risk. Extend your back-toschool preparations just a bit to help area children in need a lot. Donations of new clothing, shoes, school supplies, hygiene and food basics will help Children First Academy― the Valley’s largest school for homeless and at-risk youth.
The Outlets at Anthem is teaming up with Lerner and Rowe, CVS Pharmacies and Mix 96.9 for the fifth annual Back-to-School Tools donation drive. Look for collection bins at retailers or the customer service desk in the food court. Cash donations will be accepted at the food court eateries. Cash collected will be doubled by Legacy Connection, a non-profit organization working to improve healthcare access for Arizonans.

Anthony Bates Foundation Founded by Sharon Bates after her son Anthony became a victim of sudden cardiac death at age 20, the Anthony Bates Foundation believes no parent should suffer the heartbreak of losing a child to an undiagnosed cardiac malady. It seeks to eliminate preventable Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). The foundation works to provide free or low-cost screenings. An echocardiogram (ECHO) or electrocardiogram (EKG) are typical screening methods and can cost up to $1,500 at a medical facility. Info: anthonybates.org 14

S
heri Perry took a break from her job as middle school math teacher at Diamond Canyon after an event that happened there last spring. Since then, everything looks different and Sheri needs to readjust. It started when her son Scottie, a freshman athlete on the Boulder Creek High School football team experienced trauma during periods of intense training last year. Sheri suspected the trouble was related to an undiagnosed childhood issue with Scottie’s heart, but numerous doctor visits couldn’t confirm. In March, when Diamond Canyon School hosted a heart screening by the Anthony Bates Foundation, Sheri did what any clever mom would do to get her doctor-weary son to attend:
DON’T MISS
She signed the whole family up for a screening. Scottie passed with flying colors—turns out he has exercise-induced asthma. But Sheri’s 44-year-old husband, Scott, was not so lucky.

Or, you could say, he was very, very lucky. The screener heard a sloshy, leaky sound in Scott’s chest and told him to get to a cardiologist immediately. By the time they had done their research they discovered Scott had been walking around with an undetected aortic aneurysm, something the cardiologist said should have killed him a long time ago.

“We’ve been together since we were 14,” Sheri said. “We’re a very happy couple. I was like, ‘Are you kidding me? This is the way it’s going to go down?’ ” What happened next was a flurry of medical appointments, surgeries, family visits, a valve replacement and an improbable, simultaneous heart attack (Scott’s father ended up being treated at the same hospital at the same time after suffering a heart attack). It was Sheri’s birthday when Scott pulled through. Today, he’s back to normal life. He takes an aspirin every day. And, she sees every day a little differently.
Sheri encourages others to take advantage of the free Anthony Bates Foundation screening Scott and Sheri on this weekend―the actual screening only takes about five minutes. “I can’t tell you how many vacation this summer, 23 years after getting married (opposite) times they’ve saved people’s lives.” io and 31 years as a couple.
Symptoms of Sudden Cardiac Arrest
Medical experts point to a need to recognize early warning symptoms. Prompt treatment can lead to better results. • Discomfort or pain in chest • Discomfort or pain in one or both arms or in the back, neck, jaw, or stomach
• Shortness of breath • Cold sweat • Nausea • Light-headedness
Women and young adults may experience more atypical symptoms (as opposed to typical chest/arm pain). Do not delay medical assistance if you experience symptoms. SOURCE Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

esidents will end 2014 with a bang thanks to the ACC’s reallocation of the Independence Day fireworks canceled due to lightning. The pyrotechnics will serve as the finale for the New Year’s Eve event on Dec. 31 in the community park. A short fireworks show had been in the plans, but
with the additional inventory, the celebration promises to be grand. Somewhat characteristic of Anthem, the finale will not be held at the expected midnight, but at 10 p.m.
Vets & MCSO Lease Negotiations
Business Signage Gets a Boost
A
fter hearing dissent from Daisy Mountain Veterans on the terms of the proposed lease, the Anthem Community Council tabled the issue and arranged for directors Tim Fyke, John Balzer and John Birdseye, and Community Executive Officer Jenna Kollings to meet with members of the DMV to smooth out any differences. Meanwhile, the board unanimously approved a lease for MCSO and its Explorers group. The lease, CFO Doug Greenstein said, is “absolutely identical to the lease that we have provided to ProMusica.”
The event will also feature music, a movie on the big screen, a (synthetic) ice skating rink and food vendors.
B
usinesses in Anthem have long-clamored for a loosening of sign restrictions. Businesses in the Commerce Park are subject to both Anthem and City of Phoenix restrictions. ACC approved a new rule allowing wall signage to increase from two lines of 24-inch tall letters to two lines of 36-inch tall letters. It also authorized efforts to rezone Commerce Park buildings to allow permanent monument signs for stand-alone and multitenant buildings. THURSDAY, AUGUST 7, 2014 |

College Application Booster?

nthem youth in 7th12th grade now have a chance to be heard by the Anthem Community Council (and have a nifty addition to their college application). The newly commissioned Anthem Youth Advisory Council will work with the ACC on issues, interests and concerns affecting younger residents of the community. One male and one female seat are open per grade, with one student body officer from Boulder Creek High
School. Terms are for one year and students can apply for a second term. The council will set its objectives and goals for the year, help plan Anthem’s first New Year’s Eve celebration, and establish a youth mentoring program. In addition to the application, students must submit two recommendations, write an essay (or prepare a speech), and pass an interview. Info jkollings@ anthemcouncil.com

DECONSOLIDATION. RECONSOLIDATION.
FRUSTRATION.
T
he third and final phase of deconsolidation from the Agua Fria water district won’t happen until January, but the Arizona Corporation Commission is already thinking twice about that decision. As a result of complaints from Agua Fria residents, the Commission advised EPCOR at a July 22 meeting to consider three new wastewater rate scenarios. “…We’re working quickly to respond to the three possibilities the Arizona Corporation Commission identified: full consolidation, full deconsolidation and a third option that contemplates bringing wastewater services for the Anthem and Agua Fria districts back together,” EPCOR spokesperson Rebecca Stenholm told In&Out. “While we will report on each of the options outlined by the commission, we favor full consolidation. We believe that, over the long term, everyone could benefit from predictable, uniform rate structures, reduced regulatory expenses and increased efficiencies that would result from consolidation,” said Stenholm. Anthem Community Council is still planning its next move which will likely involve a letter-writing campaign.

POA It doesn’t stand for “procastinate or avoid.” A D V E R T I S E M E N T
P
ower of attorney is granted to an “attorney-in-fact” or “agent” to give that individual legal authority to make decisions for an incapacitated “principal.” In other words, that means once mom or dad are of the age they no longer can make good decisions for themselves (financially or medically), they choose an individual (usually a son or daughter) to make decisions for them. Some understand the importance of POA. But, in my 11 years experience, I found many seem to think POA stands for “procrastinate or avoid” making a decision. This is because having POA status is usually tough. After all, she is still your mom and when she says “I don’t want to leave my house” you naturally want to look past your fears and abide by her wishes. I estimate 70 percent of people I talk with are in denial about their parent’s deteriorating condition.
But with POA, it’s now your job to act in her best interest. Ask yourself (or someone who can be objective) the following: • Is mom a fall risk? (For example, if the doctor has told her to use a walker and she refuses, the answer is, yes!) • Is mom becoming forgetful? • Is mom eating nutritious meals regularly? • Does mom see other people throughout the week?
When considering an assisted living situation, remember our perception is our reality, and so is mom’s! Hollywood’s portrayal of the 1950s “nursing home” bears no similarity to today’s luxury assisted living home. Do your homework, learn what mom is missing out on, then talk to a professional about your options.

RELISH in This New Sport
Pickleball is not played with pickles nor are pickles awarded to the winner―which, I think, is a little disappointing. The name has nothing, in fact, to do with fermented vegetables. It honors Pickles, the cocker spaniel who owned the Wiffle ball used in the original game.
