New build? bring Your realtor Dear Doreen, I want to buy a brand new home and heard that a buyer can be charged additional costs once the builder starts building. Would I have to pay more than the stated purchase price of the home? —Balking at Building Dear Balking, This is a great example of why you want to bring a Realtor with you when looking for a new home. Your agent works for you, not the builder. New home agents (nice as they are) work for the builder. Your agent can explain the process and review the contract. The process goes something like this: once you’ve picked your model, you sit down with the sales consultant to discuss floor plan, home site and
designs. an initial estimate is provided at that time. Then you’ll visit the design center where you’ll choose materials for the interior. after all upgrades have been decided, the final price is provided. By this time, there should be little or no price changes unless the buyers decide to change the original upgrades on the contract. If, the week before completion, you decide wood floors would look nicer in your kitchen than tile, expect to be charged for the change. important You have to be accompanied by your Realtor on your first visit to the new home sales office. You can’t decide you want to be represented after you’ve signed in. —Doreen

The results are in: According to a statewide assessment, more students that attended prekindergarten at KinderCa KinderCare tested fully ready for kindergarten than their non-KinderCare classmates.* pe A higher percentage of KinderCare children ranked as top performers in Language/Literacy (14% more), Mathematical Thinking (18% more), and Scientific Thinking (11% more). With a curriculum that targets what children need to succeed in school and beyond, you’ll see how it all adds up to one amazing child — yours. A 2010 Johns Hopkins University study indicated kindergarteners who were “fully ready” for school showed higher achievement on the 3rd grade Maryland School Assessment (MSA).
*Percentages reflect children who attended a full-time prekindergarten program at KinderCare learning centers for more than a year who went to kindergarten in Maryland. More children attending KinderCare learning centers in Maryland tested fully ready than their non-KinderCare classmates. Children who attended KinderCare learning centers less than full-time and less than a year still tested fully ready at a higher rate than their non-KinderCare classmates in Maryland.

undraising events such as this are an easy decision. Just do it. It’s good for you, it’s good for the community, it’s lots of fun and it supports the cause. And, Linda’s Wish has deep roots in our history. Team W.I.S.H. (Walking in Spirit and Hope), founded in 2004 by a group of women mostly from this area, topped the Arizona fundraising charts some years ago in the Susan G. Komen 3-day event. The team has since grown (lots of men have joined, too) and has raised more than $1 million to help find a cure for breast cancer. With bitter irony, the community said goodbye to its captain and cofounder, Linda Kacmarsky, who lost

her second battle with cancer in 2010. Kacmarsky personally helped countless cancer patients and their friends and family find strength. This walk is named in her honor. Last year’s walk/run raised more than $7,000 and drew more than 500 people to the 3-mile walk through the beautiful Ironwood golf course. Spectators and cheerleaders are encouraged to attend. Registration forms at teamwishaz. org, anthemnews.com/lindaswish, the Anthem Community Center, Ironwood Fitness Center or Persimmon Fitness Center. An Unlikely (but oh, so relevant) Musical t first blush, it seems an A odd pairing. But in today’s society, bringing the suspense
thriller “Carrie” to the stage as a musical is a poignant way to bring awareness to the problem of bullying. “Carrie,” made popular by Sissy Spacek’s portrayal of a shy 17-yearold in the 1976 screen rendition of the Stephen King novel, gives the lead telekinetic powers to exact her revenge on the bullies. MTA’s edgy rendition is set to a high-energy pop/rock score by a cast of seasoned adult and youth actors. “It is very exciting that MTA is taking a chance on Stephen King’s classic story of Carrie which still proves to be socially relevant today,” said Director Adam Vargas. “There is something about this story that has fascinated many people…[since 1974].” io

Your Signature Breakfast?
Make it a Hole-in-One By Larry Vivola lvivola@anthemnews.com
I
t’s pretty amazing how certain dishes are married to a particular person for life. I guess you don’t have to be an Iron Chef to have a signature dish. My mother has too many to mention. My wife has her “famous chicken dish” (inside joke… It’s the only thing she cooks). I’m known for my pizza rustica; my friend Paulie makes the perfect stromboli; my motherin-law knocks us out with her pot roast; my friend Laurie makes the best mac-and-cheese; my other Lori friend is the brisket queen; Brian has mastered curry chicken; my sister-in-law Shachi spoils us with her vodka sauce; and my brother’s claim to fame is stuffed mushrooms. As soon as I hear the name or see one of the aforementioned dishes, I automatically think of the person associated with that food and instantly recall the last time we enjoyed it together. I bet you know what I’m talking about. (If you would like to be included on this list, feel free to drop your signature dish at my doorstep.) Dad brings a smile to our face with his lasagna and a few other specialties. When I was 8, I was awakened to a soul-warming aroma from the kitchen. Dad was preparing an egg-in-the-hole. Smelling my way out of bed is my favorite way to rise and shine. (That got me working on a new invention: an alarm clock that emits pleasing aromas instead of obnoxious noises. Can you imagine? Set your alarm clock to 6 a.m. and wake to the smell of espresso, apple pie, bacon, meatballs, sautéed garlic or bacon… Now snap out of it!) Egg-in-the-hole is pure genius because of its efficiency, taste and appearance. Thanks for introducing this to me, Dad, and making it part of my childhood memories. io Ciao, Bella!

1 Use the rim of a glass (or a cookie cutter) to cut out a circle from each slice of bread. 2 Heat a pan (medium-low heat) and add a generous dab of butter. 3 Place a slice of bread in the pan then crack an egg into the hole. Salt and pepper it. 4 Cook for a minute and flip to cook the other side.

Larry’s Tips The trickiest part is regulating the heat so the bread doesn’t burn before the egg is cooked. Cook the reserved circles of bread in the pan as well. Use cookie cutters to make different shapes, such as hearts and stars. Serves 4

Protect Yourself Part of the problem might be that damage is often not immediately evident, but happens over time with repeated exposure. Medical experts recommend protection now to avoid problems later. “As UV-damage is cumulative, sunglass use, to reduce the risk of cataract and pterygium―a
fleshy growth on the surface of the eye―is recommended, along with a wide-brimmed hat,” said Dr. Charles Schaffer, an ophthalmologist practicing in the Phoenix area with an office in Anthem. “Sunglasses need not be pricey, but one should ensure they block 99-100 percent of UVA and UVB.”

Kids, too… Most of us are careful to protect our kids’ skin from the sun while outdoors, but the same care needs to be given to
eyes. “Damage to their skin and eyes isn’t apparent for decades,” said Dr. Schaffer, “but will surface.” io
UV damage is cumulative. Children exposed to high levels of radiation, typical during summer in the Valley, may not show the effects for decades, according to Dr. Schaffer.

When to Get Examined According to Dr. Schaffer, those at
higher risk for eye problems should be examined more thoroughly and frequently. Low Risk For Eye Disease • Ages 6-40
Every three years to screen for visual acuity.
Low Risk For Eye Disease • Ages 40-65
Complete exam every 2 years. Exam with ophthalmologist every 4 years to check for glaucoma and provide correction for presbyopia.
High Risk For Eye Disease • >65 years of age • Past retinal detachment • Past serious ocular trauma • Persistent visual loss • Diabetes • Hypertension • Sickle cell disease • Family history of glaucoma • Other heritable ocular disease

Growing Pigeon Problem By Amanda Niemerg aniemerg@athemnews.com

ats with wings. Rock doves. Pigeons. No matter what you call them, once they move in, they can be a terrible nuisance. Area residents have said they’re seeing more pigeons. And, that could cause a whole set of issues you really don’t want, like property damage, grumpy neighbors and, well, unsightly bird poop everywhere. Gross.

Once pigeons have made your home their home, they can begin a happy little—no, big family. Pigeons can produce more than a dozen young per year. Rebecca Trudeau told In&Out she’s seeing a pigeon problem in her Sundance neighborhood in Anthem. “We are seeing a larger number of pigeons roosting in eaves, the decorative cut-out near roof lines, under and around solar panels...”

According to Dr. Kirstin Young, bird feces can contain salmonella and E. Coli, which can cause stomach problems and diarrhea in pets. As for humans, bird droppings can contain a fungus called Histoplasma capsulatum, which can cause a lung infection called histoplasmosis. The symptoms are similar to pneumonia, and if left untreated, can be serious. “Fresh bird droppings on surfaces such as sidewalks and window sills have not been shown to present a health risk for histoplasmosis because birds themselves do not appear to be infected by H. capsulatum. Rather, bird manure is primarily a nutrient source for the growth of H. capsulatum already present in soil,” according to a CDC study. Bird waste becomes a real nuisance when it damages property: From clogging rain gutters and drains to peeling paint off vehicles. Getting rid of pigeons can be a tricky and costly business once they roost. According to the Pigeon Guy, an Arizona company specializing exclusively in pigeon control, the cost of ridding your home of the pesky birds can cost anywhere from $250$3,000, depending on how much of the 24

work you do yourself and the extent of treatment necessary. Pigeons are not considered wildlife, so Arizona Game and Fish has no management responsibilities for them, said Urban Wildlife Specialist Darren Julian. “Best thing for people to rid the neighborhood of pigeons would be to remove bird feeders,” said Julian. “This seems to be the biggest problem I hear from people who are feeding birds is that they are now attracting pigeons. I remind them that if they are leaving food out you can’t just feed the cute ones.” The U.S. Humane Society agrees removing food sources will help pigeons move on. Also, cover your trash cans and do not leave pet food outside. And, prevent birds from nesting by adding deterrents in places they find comfy, like spikes or slides. There are several websites where you can order bird spikes, wires and even OvoControl, a type of daily bird
birth control that prevents eggs from developing. OvoControl is a pesticide though, and is recommended for larger areas. Beware of sticky repellents, especially those containing polybutylene gel. According to the Humane Society, these gels can harm all birds and animals that come into contact with it. And in case you were wondering, bird spikes are not against Parkside HOA regulations and there is no required paperwork you have to submit to install the spikes. “I have made many calls to the exterminating and pest control companies over the years to try to get information on
Cleanup Tips • Wear protective clothing, a mask to cover nose and mouth and gloves. • Do not sweep the poop, as this can break it down into dust particles that can be inhaled. • Saturate the area with a bleach solution made of 1 part bleach and 9 parts water and soak for 10 minutes. *Bleach can discolor surfaces and damage vegetation. A non-bleach disinfectant can be used.
Carefully placed spikes encourage pigeons to move on. any other solutions available, but the spikes seem to be the only thing out there. We certainly have seen homes with a huge pigeon problem and the home right next to it with no pigeons. The ‘professionals’ say that the pigeons pick a house and they will keep coming back to that home over and over,” said Annette McCarthy, Anthem Parkside community manager. io • Using a shovel, scrape waste into doubled plastic bag, seal and dispose in outside trash. • Scrub the area with a stiff brush or broom and dish soap or laundry soap, then rinse. Soak again with bleach solution for 10 minutes, or if the area gets at least four hours of direct sunlight, leave it alone. Ultraviolet light can sanitize the area. The storm of July 31, 2012 took down a portion of the retaining wall between the Village condos and this wash just north of Anthem Way. About 50 linear feet of wall collapsed and more than 100 feet were damaged. The repairs were complete as of July 5.
The burnt house that has blighted Anthem for years is finally being rebuilt. A new roof and new framing are visible. As of this writing, windows are being installed. The estimated completion date was originally set for June, but was held up due to delays in the permit process.

Little Colorado River Walk Trail The transcontinental highway, U.S. 60, was built through the community in 1930, bringing thousands of Americans through on their way to a new life in California. The historic Madonna of the Trail statue is also found here. Start your visit at the Springerville Heritage Center in the historic Springerville Elementary School. This newly opened museum/visitor center provides information about the history, art and natural environment of the area. Check out the Renee Cushman Exhibit and prepare to be surprised by her amazing art collection. The Becker Lake Wildlife Area is just three miles from downtown and is managed as a trophy trout lake. Wintering bald eagles are often seen near the lakeside cottonwood trees. A new river walk trail follows the oxbow path of the Little Colorado River whose waters are responsible for Becker Lake. This 1.2-mile walking trail passes through a rich riparian zone frequented by many species of songbirds, as well as beaver and
muskrat. If you have never seen a real beaver dam, you will pass by several on this hike. Check out the pueblo ruins known as Casa Malpais, just five miles from downtown. This well-preserved Mogollon cultural site has been called the premier archeological site in the Arizona White Mountains. Visitors will find extensive examples of rock art, an astronomical calendar, ancient stairways, as well as a great kiva. Nearby Attractions The town of Greer is only 10 miles away and the Big Lake Recreational Area is 30 miles away. This is also the land of the Springerville Volcanic Field, the third largest volcanic field in North America. One final enticement to get you out to Springerville is the display of fall colors. Fall arrives in September/ early October in the White Mountains. And the fall colors in Springerville and surrounding areas—with their cottonwoods and quaking aspens—are simply spectacular. io THURSDAY, AUGUST 22, 2013 |

‘New-School’ Sign-in Sheet on’t look for the pen with the giant D theft-discouraging flower taped to its barrel. Parent volunteers and
visitors to Anthem School have a new way to sign in this year. Two iPads sit on the front office counter in all their technological glory, welcoming parents and volunteers to sign in on the touch screen, instead of with old-school pen and paper. The paperless upgrade comes at no additional cost. The first generation iPads were issued in 2010 and used by administrators for classroom support. But by this year, the technology has become outdated, and upgrades no longer apply, making
the glitzy devices unsuitable for their original purpose, according to Principal Deb Roets. So, she repurposed them using a free sign-in app designed for iPad. “I believe in recycling and reusing materials, especially technology,” Roets said. “Since we are focusing on customer service and providing extraordinary service to our students and parents, I thought this would be an efficient use of them while modernizing our front office area,” she said. The sign-in app also provides a quick report of all visitors on campus, should an emergency situation arise.
