ASK DOREEN

Living In Anthem & Loving It!

Deadbeat Ex Can Ruin Credit Dear Doreen, I’m getting a divorce and want to buy another home. The judge told my soon-to-be ex-husband he is responsible for most of our debts. But after seven years of marriage, I can say he won’t pay on time, if at all. (I handled the finances when we were married.) Will this keep me from getting another home? —Starting Over Dear S.O. Many believe the judge’s declaration releases the other party from debt. Not so. If you and your spouse both signed on the loans (car, mortgage) and it ceases to be paid,

e

you will both suffer. The lender will almost certainly report the late payments on both your credit reports. If the account goes seriously delinquent or to collections or charge-off status, your scores will suffer for years despite what the judge said. Sorry for the bad news. You will have to keep track of the payments—or lack thereof. If they are not made, it will be difficult, if not impossible to get another mortgage loan. Be sure and discuss this with your attorney. —Doreen

now lovers in the Valley are scrambling to make plans as a winter storm threw more than 20 inches of snow on the greater Flagstaff area this past weekend—just in time for the holidays.

Here are some popular play areas for those looking to romp in the white stuff, while keeping clear of the downhill skiers and snowboarders. Just call before you drive to make sure they are open.

Wing Mountain

This mecca for sledding and cross-country skiing opened the season with several new sled hills. The organized play area has plowed and managed parking, hot beverages, sleds and other concessions. Hours 9 a.m.–4 p.m. daily, weather permitting. Cost $12 for parking. Getting There Take I-17 North to Milton Road in Flagstaff. Follow Milton Road to US 180 North and at mile marker 226—about 2.5 miles past Snowbowl Road—turn left onto Forest Road 222B. Info snowplayaz.com or call 602923-3555 for up-to-date information.

Crowley Pit

Smaller than Wing Mountain, sledders might find this undeveloped snow play area less crowded. Several hills vary in steepness and length. Getting There Take I-17 North to Milton Road in Flagstaff. Follow Milton Road to US 180 North and turn left at the parking sign (mile marker 233). Crowley Pit is about one mile beyond Flagstaff Nordic Center. Info fs.usda.gov/recarea/coconino and search “Crowley Pit.” (See SNOW on Page 16)

(From SNOW on Page 15)

Cost $10/Tube Rental, Snow boot rental $7/adult, $5/child. Ski equipment and snowshoes available for rent. Getting There Take I-17 North to Exit 337 just south of Flagstaff.

Walker Lake

This area, about a mile beyond Crowley Pit, offers several more sledding hills. The flatlands of the area are open to crosscountry skiers and showshoers.

Flagstaff Nordic Center

Popular for its nine miles of snowshoe trails, and 40 kilometers of cross-country ski trails. Night play on Fridays when conditions permit. If you need to rent cross-country ski equipment, call ahead and reserve. Getting There Take I-17 North to Milton Road in Flagstaff. Follow Milton Road to US 180 North. The parking lot is along the highway at mile marker 232. Info flagstaffnordiccenter.com or 928-220-0550 Note You’ll find other informal play areas along US 180, but the Forest Service discourages use of these areas as parking along the highway poses a safety hazard.

Fort Tuthill County Park

The park offers areas for general snowplay, snowshoeing, and crosscountry skiing. Fort Tuthill Tube Run, renovated in 2012, now includes bigger turns and faster straight-aways. Kiddie sled hill for the little ones.

Sunrise Park Resort

The White Mountain resort known for its great downhill ski runs, offers snowtubing, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing with 13 miles of trails. The tubing area is behind Lake Ono near the main entrance. (Bring your own tube or rent one.) Cost $25/Person for 20-minute sleigh ride. Getting There Take Highway 87 North to Payson. Then take Highway 260 East through Show Low and Pinetop Lakeside to Highway 273. Turn right on 273 South for about four miles to Sunrise Park Lodge. Info sunriseskiparkaz.com or 928-735-7669

Prescott

While the area doesn’t typically get heavy snow, there are several pull-offs for sledding along Walker Road. io

ere’s the thing with women and January. From before Halloween right through to the Bowl games, women have been in support-mode overdrive. We’ve tossed our own wellness aside to accommodate the duties and worries of the costume, the candy, the holiday party, the turkey, the invitations, the fundraiser, the dwindling finances, the carpool, the gifts, the pictures, the half-days at school… and all the attendant crises. January brings us to the ragged edge, mentally and physically, and we scramble to redefine

ourselves with yet another set of impossible resolutions. But research and empirical evidence reveal the folly of that exercise. Most resolutions drop by the wayside by midFebruary. What we’re discovering is this: Weight loss and fitness are not events with a beginning and an end.

Life Keeps Happening Adopting a weightloss goal as a New Year’s resolution leads to two possible outcomes, neither very good: 1. Your goal is unrealistic given your particular situation. Real life will interrupt your progress. Failure ensues and your

self-esteem plummets.

McLaughlin knew something had to be done. 2. You reach your goal. She needed to redefine not Yay! You are finally done just her body shape, but with all that gruesome her life. Part of McLaughlin’s fitness odyssey included a diet and exercise program that helped her drop more than 100 pounds. She felt healthy, strong, energetic… great. She finally made it! At a celebration at the end of the program, though, there was some anxiety, “I was thinking, ‘Now what?’” McLaughlin said. Of course she wasn’t going to keep up that same grueling pace of diet and exercise indefinitely, but what should she do?

a progress report shows muscle strength, calories burned and progress toward the goal.

Support: A Secret Ingredient

“The Realest Thing Out There”

In October, she dropped in on an open house at Curves of Anthem— nutrition and fitness facility designed for women. There, she met owner Kim Grigsby who opened the place 10 years prior with a passion for helping women. McLaughlin saw a circuit of non-threatening machines and got a taste of the Curves ideology. She knew she was onto something.

Kim Grigsby, left, and Michelle McLaughlin joke about being fated to team up.

Beyond the technology, though, it’s the human factor that impressed McLaughlin so much. “It’s very social, very supportive,” she said. “It’s the realest thing out there.” Curves has coaches to offer support as well as an online forum for members; The concept, based the kind of social support on a 30-minute workout, “Within the first six psychologists say helps you months, I gained 50 pounds. three times a week, uses hold to your goals. “Just to deceivingly simple-looking have that person who is on It wasn’t like I was eating ice cream every night… Life resistance machines your side and you can say, ‘Yesterday was awful, I just happened,” she said. in your head to make it successful. It’s not about what you ate or what you didn’t eat, it’s about what you thought.” It’s not about dropping 100 pounds—or even 10. It’s about changing how you live your life. That’s when it clicked for her. “Curves gets it,” she said. McLaughlin, who helped grow a small business to a $70-million enterprise, was so moved to discover a concept so understanding of women and their struggle to stay fit, she offered her skill set to Grigsby. “If you want me to do this I can help you,” she told Grigsby, “…but I have to go home and cry first.” The partnership coincides with a move: Curves at Anthem is relocating and celebrating a grand opening Saturday, Jan 12. io

a Resolution

ith each new calendar year, we grab the opportunity to redefine ourselves and improve our life. But most of us sabotage the endeavor with unrealistic goals. We are attempting behavior modification on ourselves, and this, psychologists agree, requires some “rewiring” of the brain, not a simple task. To maximize your success: Be realistic Don’t try to do something you can’t imagine actually doing. For instance, if you want to get fit, schedule exercise three days per week, not seven. Improve your diet by making smarter choices, e.g. fruit for dessert instead of eliminating dessert. Attack one resolution at a time — It took you years to get this way... Don’t expect a sudden change, especially if you are hoping for a lasting change. Talk about it Sharing your experiences and struggles with family and friends makes your efforts easier and less intimidating. Consider joining a group to reach your goals, such as a workout class at your gym or a group of coworkers quitting smoking. Don’t beat yourself up Perfection is unattainable. Minor missteps when reaching your goals are normal. Don’t give up when you slip up. This is a journey with ups and downs, the key is to recover and get back on track. Ask for support Accepting help strengthens your resilience and ability to manage stress caused by your resolution. If you feel overwhelmed or unable to meet your goals on your own, consider seeking help from a professional. SOURCE: American Psychological Association
