Q:
Why Mama’s Creating Drama
“Recently, our 87-year-old mom has been telling “stories” pitting my brother and I against each other. For instance, she told my brother I picked a fight with her, and she told me my brother is getting divorced. Those things are untrue! Is this a symptom of getting older? Why would she do this?”
A:
If you and your doctor have already ruled out issues relating to dimentia, there is a saying that might apply here: “Negative attention is better than none at all.” Creating drama can be typical among seniors who don’t have a lot going on in their lives. Address the made-up story with the senior and they likely deny it, making you feel like you’re going crazy! Keep your loved one drama-free by providing positive activities to keep her mind active and focused.
Consider letting her play community Bingo, or join the seniors’ social group. An e-reader can provide hours of entertainment and some even have games. When it’s time, a quality assisted living facility offers a multitude of daily activities to keep seniors occupied, active and entertained. The key is to give her things to look forward to besides visits from you and your brother. Then, you might find some relief from the negativity.
Indedpendent Living? Assisted Living? Living with Me (or my brother/sister)? Ask the experts! Cheryl Ables began working
in the senior care field 10 years ago, after taking care of her parents and grandparent while raising her children. Sam Ile and his family have been in the business of assisted living homes for more than 20 years. Sam and Cheryl are approaching ten years as owners of Anthem Senior Living. They also operate Eldermom, a senior placement service and, now, Anthem Senior Retreat Assisted Living home. Sam and Cheryl are experts at the unique challenges posed by aging parents. Have a question? Write or call today! 602-909-9550,
cheryl@eldermom.com. Help is on the way!

Lennar Development Gets Zoning Approval
E
xpect to see construction begin on new homes just north of the Daisy Mountain Post Office as early as spring 2014. Phoenix City Council granted Lennar Homes’ zoning request on the 78-acre parcel northeast of 43rd Avenue and Circle Mountain Road, allowing the builder to proceed with construction of 202 single-family homes. [See “New Neighborhood Planned North of Anthem,” In&Out, Aug. 15.] Now that Lennar has crossed the zoning hurdle, it must now submit site plans, followed by building plans. Lennar is currently in the process of site and utility engineering and
landscape design for the community. According to Todd Skoro, land acquisition manager for Lennar, the new HOA-community called Circle Mountain Ranch would feature 33 acres of open space including pocket parks, a ramada, a barbecue, tot lot, grassy space and pedestrian connections within the community. Homes would be constructed on 6,000-square-foot lots and would have a Phoenix mailing address and receive Phoenix water and trash service. “We are anticipating earthwork activities to commence in spring 2014 and model homes opening as early as spring 2015,” Skoro said.
COUNCIL UPDATE
Residents in the Dark Over Holiday Lights
I
f you’re wondering what happened to all the welcoming holiday lights that adorned the trees along Anthem Way and Gavilan Peak Parkway annually, you’re not alone.
it was decided during a special 3 p.m.work session of the ACC board on Oct. 3. More than $300,000 was chopped at the same work session in an effort to balance the budget, including:
According to the Anthem Community Council, the Grinchly dark streets are the result of two words: Budget cuts.
• A $75,000 reduction in maintenance line items
Holiday lighting was slashed from Council’s 2013 and 2014 operating budgets “as a cost savings measure to minimize impact on resident assessments,” said ACC spokesperson Shannon Wallace. The savings amounts to $15,000 annually.
• Cutting the resource guide from 11 to 6 issues per year
Discontinuation of the holiday lighting comes as a surprise to many as
• A reduction of the 15th anniversary celebration
• Removal of security gates at the community park
On top of the $300,000 in cuts, ACC implemented a $72-per-year increase in owner assessments. [See “Anthem Residents Face First Assessment Hike in Seven Years,” In&Out, Oct. 31.] io DECEMBER 26, 2013 & JANUARY 2, 2014 |

andy Wagner Struss remembers a drive back to the Valley from Northern Arizona in the midst of a monsoon storm years before Anthem had a dot on the map. With nothing else in sight but the Outlets, worsening weather prompted Sandy and her family to quickly detour off I-17 and take shelter at the mall. Little did she know, the Outlets would one day be so close to her own backyard. When Sandy’s husband, Fred, a Del Webb salesperson, began working to get the master-planned community off the ground, the Strusses quickly became familiar with this stretch of Sonoran Desert. And, when Del Webb held its opening sales day for employees only in February 1999, the Struss family was the first to stake their lot in Anthem’s Echelon neighborhood, or as Sandy refers to it, “the historical section of Anthem.” “It was 6 a.m. and Fred was leaving for work when he asked me if we were going to buy a house today,” laughed Sandy, and after giving him the goahead to move on a purchase contract, “he called me at 8 a.m. to let me know we were the first home buyers in Anthem.”

Sandy’s brother and sister-in-law Steve and Jacque Wagner bought their Anthem home the following weekend when Del Webb opened sales to employee friends and family. “We really felt it was going to be an extraordinary community. The builder was the best master planner in country,” Sandy said. The official grand opening weekend

to the public still has Sandy shaking her head. “People were lined up in droves, there was a traffic jam on I-17, and though there were guards manning the front gates on Anthem Way, people were blowing right past them,” she said.
The Early Years
When the Struss family closed on their home, daughter Emily enrolled at Anthem School in a class of just eight, Four Sons provided the only gas and food in town and the closest grocery was New River Market. In many ways, Sandy said, she felt like a pioneer as Anthem “seemed so far away from everything.” Of course, Tramonto had not been built, nor had Happy Valley Towne Center. In fact, there was no real development between Anthem and Loop 101.

A framed promotional poster and other memorabilia adorn the walls at the Struss home.
The greatest thing about Anthem then, said Sandy, was excitement among the residents. Neighbors got to know each other quickly, forming a close-knit community. She and her family were a part of a lot of firsts; her daughters, for instance, were part of Anthem’s first swim team.
supportive community,” she said, pausing for a moment. “The support for the Wagners wouldn’t have happened anywhere else.” Sandy and Fred are aunt and uncle to Katie Wagner, a teenager whose battle with cancer rallied uncommon support from the community. Katie’s battle ended in September.
“When Safeway finally opened, you knew everyone when you would go shopping,” she said. Community events like the July Fourth fireworks were like getting together with extended family. “That’s the one thing that I miss,” Sandy said. “Now when we go to the fireworks, we don’t know everyone.”
The family-friendly amenities attracted scores of families 15 years ago. Many of the children who were the driving reason for the move to Anthem are now adults, and Anthem’s amenities and strong community are attracting a new generation of families with young children.

Celebrating YEARS
Watching Anthem Grow Paul Grube, while not the first to purchase, was the first to move in to an Anthem home in the heat of July, 1999. He was soon joined by neighbors on either side who are still his neighbors.

A
s Anthem approaches its 15th anniversary, it’s hard to imagine this place as the hardscrabble desert it once was. Just look west at the undeveloped desert, though, and there you have the image. In those 15 years, Anthem reached maturity with many changes along the way. But some have been here like a fixture since the opening of the Anthem Way exit. On July 9, 1999, Paul Grube closed on his home in Parkside. When he did he was told he held the distinction of being Anthem’s first resident. Back then, Anthem went by a different name. “I heard about ‘The Desert Hills Project’ about two years
before it came to fruition,” said Grube. “I felt it was worth the wait after all the publicity it received. Some was positive and some not so positive. That made it even more intriguing to me. I kind of had a hunch then that this would be a special place to live. I am glad I am a patient man.”
An Easy Choice The reasons for Grube’s decision were simple: 1. Its reasonable distance from Phoenix. 2. Its unique setting and 3. Safety. “I chose Anthem because it’s different and far away from Phoenix, but still reasonably attainable. It’s really a town in itself. People envy me because they want to live here, too,” Grube said. “I don’t feel safe in any part of Phoenix to be honest. I have always felt safe here since day one― DECEMBER 26, 2013 & JANUARY 2, 2014 |

CURRENTS » COMMUNITY number one reason I moved here.”
The Early Days Grube bought his home in Jubilation. As an RN working the evening shift, he remembers the unique way he had to return home. “When I came home at night, I had to, even at that time, enter through the only entrance by the waterfalls and check in with the security guard.” Because of the housing bust—and human nature—Anthem has seen its share of families moving in and out. Grube though, feels anchored in his neighborhood. “My neighbors are great and a lot of them are the original residents. Both residents on either side of me moved in soon after I did, given we were the first three houses to be completed when building started in Jubilation. That says something in itself!”
Today Grube is as much now in love with Anthem as the day he chose to make this place home. He loves the bike paths, the local critters and, now that the town has grown, easy access to stores. “Anthem has evolved over time
into a well-seasoned, diverse kind of community that seems to welcome all who come here to live. It offers easy access to stores and businesses of all kinds,” said Grube.
Just One Thing… We all have a wish list. For Grube, his wish, the one thing he believes will make this place complete, is a wish for our four-legged friends. “Everything that was promised came to fruition except I wish Anthem would embrace the fact that we need a dog park,” conveyed Grube. “They are a part of our community and deserve a place to run and play. fter a decade or so, you might discover that for most pools there are only a handful of things that can go bad. The major components are the filter tank, the pump and the motor. The filter tank can cost $1,000 or better to replace, said Sean Webster of Advent Pools. “And if you have an in-floor cleaning system, that can add wear and tear to the filter,” Webster said. While a filter may last 10 years or more, they’re generally not warrantied for more than two. You can sometimes extend that with a package deal if you are installing a new pool, said Webster. Ask your pool professional. The pump mechanism—the big, black tank that works with the motor— can develop pinholes in it. That will ding you about $400 to replace. The motor that powers the pump can go bad and replacing that element costs upwards of $500. “You’re doing good if you get 10 years out of them,” Webster said. At some point, you’ll have to replace the entire pump/motor mechanism, said Webster, not just the components. Here’s where it gets tricky. A new Arizona law—Title 44—mandates the next pool pump you buy be a two-

That’s about $500 more than a traditional unit. “Hopefully the new technology will drop in cost,” he said. Pebble Tec This stuff is hearty, according to Webster. “I have only seen one go bad,” he said. How long has Webster been in the business? “I graduated high school in 1983 and the old man grabbed me by the neck and said ‘Hey, you’re in the pool business now.’” io

Today, I-17 connects Anthem to not only downtown Phoenix 34 miles south, but also to Loop 303. In 2014, this relationship will make the Wildlife World Zoo at Northern Avenue/Loop 303 just 25 minutes from Anthem. Apps for Getting Around on a Night on the Town By Nadine Shaalan nshaalan@anthemnews.com

ere’s a gift of love for a college student, urban dweller or wine aficionado: Have them download the app for one of the fastgrowing ridesharing services to their smartphone, and enter your payment information. Then, tell them next time they’ve had one too many, get a safe ride home on you.

While you’re at it, download it yourself. These transportation apps (Uber and Lyft are the most popular here) take advantage of GPS technology in ubiquitous smartphones to connect drivers with riders for ondemand rideshares. “It’s quicker and easier than a taxi,” said Sam Good, a 26-year-old account executive with Yelp in Scottsdale. Good uses Uber any time he knows a

Like to Drive? Need Cash? Both Lyft and Uber perform background checks and have “zero tolerance” for drug and alcohol violations. Both let you keep some 80 percent of the fare. Uber’s fares are set, while Lyft’s “donations” are recommended but not fixed. It helps if you know the city, drive safely and are pleasant in the car.
night out might include alcohol. “I don’t think I’ve ever waited more than five minutes,” said Good. “Especially Friday and Saturday nights. You can end up waiting 20 or 30 minutes [for a taxi].” While rides can easily be had in Phoenix, Tempe, Scottsdale and major cities across the country, app-based ride sharing is not available in the greater Anthem area… yet. [See “Like to Drive. Need Cash?”]
How it Works The service, riders say, is more convenient and more satisfying than a traditional taxi and rates are comparable. You get in the car. You get out of the car. That, essentially, is all you do after you order the ride. “You open the app; It knows where you are with satellite navigation. Then it tells you how far the closest Uber is. You click ‘order now.’ It tells you what your driver’s name is and how many star ratings he has,” Good said. Drivers are polite and the cars are clean and nice, he said. “And, sometimes they’ll have water bottles and gum for you.”
Rates While there are differences between services, the premise is the same: Order the ride from your phone, pay for the ride with your card on file.
You’ll be able to set your own schedule. Your pay will be deposited to your account. You can rate your riders. They can rate you. If your rating falls below a certain number of stars, expect to look for another line of work. To apply as a driver, download the app. Uber is currently offering $1,000 in Uber credit if you or your referral gets hired.
Uber charges a flat rate: In Scottsdale, 35 cents/minute or $2.35/ mile (depending on speed) is added to a $3-base fare. (Uber also offers a premium service with professional drivers in upscale vehicles for higher rates.) Lyft recommends a donation. No coin is exchanged. “You don’t have to pay them [cash] or tip, it’s quick and easy— it’s all taken care of for you. Your credit card is already synced with it,” Good said. Although, Good didn’t know how much he was charged for a tip, he is not concerned. In the end, the total amounts to less

than a taxi, so for him, it’s a no-brainer. Quality control is managed, in part, through a rating system. Riders rate drivers, drivers rate riders. “Everyone I’ve seen is really close to five,” Good said.
Is it Safe? Those worried about getting in a stranger’s private car should know that Uber and Lyft perform background checks on prospective drivers, and record drivers’ license and insurance information. (Drivers with a felony or DUI, for instance, need not apply.) Drivers are covered by an additional $1-million liability policy and their cars must meet minimum standards. All rides are tracked by GPS. The Downside Good couldn’t think of anything negative about Uber. “It’s a great service as far as I’m concerned,” he said. Just be sure to get your friends to pony up for the ride. “Remember that you’re actually paying money even though it doesn’t feel like it,” he said, laughing. “I’ve paid to drive my friends around town lots of nights.” io

‘Saving Mr. Banks’
Why Stories Get Told By In&Out Staff info@anthemnews.com
“S
aving Mr. Banks” weaves between the modern experiences of P. L. Travers (Emma Thompson), broke and forced to consider selling the “Mary Poppins” film rights, and her flashbacks to childhood, when she lives out the wild mix of memories that inspired the original book. As Walt Disney (Tom Hanks) struggles to understand and reason with the stubborn writer seemingly determined to dominate or sabotage the project, the audience gradually learns the significance behind each detail with which she refuses to part; why she
throws away her pears, why Mr. Banks can’t have a mustache, why she’s so terrified of her story being corrupted or belittled. With a satisfying balance, the film bounces from witty one-liners to deeply tragic scenes and back again, making the audience laugh before tears can dry. Hardly a line comes out of Thompson’s mouth that isn’t precisely and unapologetically pointed, and while her irritability becomes more understandable as the film progresses, it remains consistently entertaining. While “Mr. Banks” isn’t written for children, kids 12 and older should be able to follow and enjoy. io DECEMBER 26, 2013 & JANUARY 2, 2014 |

Fifteen! That’s Cray-cray! By Chris Prickett cprickett@anthemnews.com
O
ur little baby is 15! Where has the time gone? It seems like just yesterday she couldn’t even feed herself (pre-Safeway), could barely speak in complete sentences (early versions of the Community Council… Please no nasty letters, it’s a joke), and couldn’t control her “potty issues” (OK, we’re still working on the sewage smell by the park and ride). Right before our eyes, she’s almost all grown up. Like the typical teenager, she’s a wondrous amalgamation of sugar and spice, pimples and promise. And like typical, albeit, hypothetical parents, we still hold high hopes for her and yet we’ve tempered some of the more lofty aspirations we held at her birth. As my mother used to tell me and my four siblings as we entered our teens, “my job is to get you through high school without pregnancies or prison records, the rest is up to you.” Looking back, our progeny has had her share of ups and downs. In the

spirit of positivity (and the limitation of column space) I prefer to focus on the ups. Anthem is my hometown in every sense of the word. I’ve chosen to raise my kids here and that’s proven to be a great decision. The heart of our community cannot be rebuked by even the most jaundiced of observers. If you’re in need, our girl is here to help. She will give you a hug, open up her piggy bank, and link hands with her brothers and sisters to show you she cares. I could not begin to list all of the circumstances, or all of the people who have helped and have been helped; they have all just melted together into who and what we are. Whether you’ve lived here since day one, just dropped in or passed through, our girl’s openarms policy applied. Our four-pawed friends get the same loving treatment. Like any 15-year old, there will be more twists and turns on the road to adulthood. There will be more slams of the bedroom door, more tears of anger, and more embarrassing outbursts for sure. But we know where her heart is, so we will continue to love her, support her, and marvel at her maturity. io
