Nov. 14, 2013]. I agree the Venture Drive/Gavilan Peak Parkway intersection has a potential for accidents and should be made safer. It should be a four-way stop, a solution that is both easy and cheap. The intersection is a two-way stop between two, four-way-stop intersections. Pedestrians and drivers might have a momentary lapse in consciousness and forget whether they are at a four-way stop or the two-way stop. It has happened to me; It must happen to others. The pedestrian at Venture who momentarily thinks it is one of the four-way stops, steps from the curb trusting that the oncoming vehicle on Gavilan Peak must, and will, stop. The Gavilan Peak driver at one of the fourway intersections, momentarily confusing it with the Venture two-way, does not stop. It has happened, and it will continue to happen with the present setup. Such confusion could be eliminated by having all three intersections be the same: Four-way stops. MCDOT says, “A major issue appears to be drivers obeying traffic laws. The greatest traffic safety device on a roadway is the driver behind the wheel.” Such a position is a cop-out that is irresponsible and unsatisfactory. A dangerous situation has been identified by residents who see it day in and day out. Surely the criteria for a fourway stop can take into account more than simple traffic volume. In this place, saving lives is the overriding criterion.

oulder Creek High School swim coach Scott Newell was awarded the Northwest Regional High School Coach of the Year for the boys’ swim team.

Newell, who won the same distinction last year for the girls’ team, insisted the whole team, including his assistant coaches, are responsible for their success.

The boys’ team dominated the Northwest Regional Invitation in November with 523 points (191 points ahead of the second place team). The girls team also took first place with 595.50 points (a whopping 244.5 points ahead of the second place team). Newell said he expects the team to do even better next year. “I love what I do—every day.” io

After a Brush With Disaster, a Happy Ending for Miss Daisy

hen 2-year-old Miss Daisy, a W poodle-mix, was found Oct. 29 in the desert in New River, she was

hungry, and suffering a severe case of luxating patella, or dislocated kneecaps. Daisy was in need of a surgical procedure costing upward of $3,000, but according to Anthem Pets, a Cave Creek veterinarian stepped up to perform the operation for about half the cost. A fundraising website was launched and Miss Daisy was cared for by a loving foster family while funds could be raised for corrective surgery. When word got out, the community came to the rescue. Thanks to some very generous donors, Anthem Pets met its goal during Thanksgiving weekend. Daisy will now get to have the surgery she needs to help her live a healthy, happy life. “We want to thank each and every one of you who donated and also shared her story with friends and family. Your generosity will allow Daisy many years of happiness and pain-free life. Her future is so bright,” said Lisa Kilwein of Anthem Pets. ooLights, the largest annual fundraiser for the Phoenix Zoo, just might be the premier family holiday event in the Valley. Last year nearly 300,000 visited the zoo after sunset, and this 51st edition of ZooLights promises to be bigger and better. Seven hundred displays covered by 3.7 million LED lights punctuate the zoo’s main lake and the Arizona Trail. Many of the zoo’s favorite animals are honored in sculptures, 3D-displays and moving displays, creating a sea of colorful lights. Seasonal treats and holiday music enrich the experience. Throughout the years, some of the displays have become almost legendary. Big Blue, the 85-foot-tall tree adorned with 300,000 blue lights has greeted Valley families for years. Jengo the Talking Giraffe attracts children of all ages with his funny stories and silly holiday songs. Two new Music In Motion shows dazzle visitors with a unique choreographed lighting event. For the first time, kids and adults (weighing 45 to 250 pounds) can take a night flight above the colorful lights on the new 300-long FlyWire zipline. (Additional cost: $10. Subject to weather conditions.) Anyone taller than 38 inches can take a ride on the Polar Slide where a giant inner-tube hurls riders down a 200-foot-long track. (Additional cost: $3.) For some, strolling hand-in-hand along the pathways provides the most enchanting experience. Wear comfortable shoes and dress warm. Expect larger crowds during the weekend. ZooLights began in 1962, the year the Phoenix Zoo opened, and has become a tradition for many Valley families. Children who first saw ZooLights in the 1980s and 1990s, now bring their children to enjoy the experience. io

A single stray letter found its way on her airline ticket, ever-so-slightly preventing a match with her driver’s license. With remaining flights fully booked, she was turned away to face the dreary two-hour drive back to her apartment with its empty fridge. This cautionary tale serves as a reminder that holiday travel is not like regular travel. The extra volume makes for unexpected challenges. For starters, make sure the name on your ticket exactly matches your I.D. Here are more tips provided by Sky Harbor Airport.

Go Early Arrive two hours before

your flight departs, especially if you plan to park in economy areas or are checking bags. Don’t postpone the security line until the last minute. It can move slower than you expect.

crawled out of my cave on the first day of fall this year. I opened the front door just a crack and put my face forward. No singed eyebrows. That was the first good sign. My toe tentatively touched the pavement; no thirddegree burn. Second good sign. I retrieved my newspaper without the use of oven mitts.

Hallelujah! It’s safe to re-enter society in Arizona! I roared that reverse-hibernation was over. That’s correct. Reverse. Just as a bear hibernates in winter, I hibernate during Arizona summer. You’d be hard-pressed not to find me in my home cave, office cave, or any airconditioned environment during the relentless triple-digit days.

Folks said I would get accustomed to the heat. Well, folks, after eight summers in the Sonoran Desert, it just ain’t happening, and this “desert bear” has adapted to survive.

Breadcrumbs, plain Directions

I’ll share with you the first dish that popped into my head with the arrival of cooler weather: stuffed pork chops. Actually, double-stuffed pork chops. Honestly, though, this dish is always navigating its way to the front of my brain with images of oozing mozzarella and its crusty breadcrumb blanket. Plus, it meets my other favorite criteria: It’s easy. I wonder if I can call this meal a pork chop since the meat is removed from the bone. The majority of chefs will tell you that cooking meat on the bone is more flavorful. Now, I’m no TV chef, (I just play one for family and friends). But I do agree there are few things in life more beautiful than a French butchered hunk of meat on the bone. For this recipe, though, there is no flavor deficit by removing the bone, so I trade in the bone for cooking benefits and ease of purchasing. Ciao, Bella!

1 Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Gently mix together parsley, garlic, bacon, cheeses, salt, pepper. 2 Slice boneless pork chop horizontally to create a pocket. Evenly distribute the stuffing between the pork chops. 3. Drizzle each chop with olive oil and rub into both sides then season both sides with salt. 4 Dredge each chop in breadcrumbs and shake off excess. 5 Place on greased, heavy baking sheet. Bake in top third of oven for approximately 40 minutes or until the middle of thickest part of chop reaches 140 degrees. 6 Remove and let rest 10 minutes before serving. Serves 4

’ve had this writing gig for eightplus years now. Accounting for the occasional double issue, a sprinkling of missed deadlines, and a hissy-fit or three, I’m somewhere north of 300 columns that have made the editor’s cut. I don’t pretend to be the second coming of Walt Whitman; I shoot for mildly entertaining bathroom reading. There are a few memorable ones (my infamous bathtub centerfold, [“Retro-resolutions Are Hot,” In&Out, Dec. 28, 2007] comes to mind), and definitely a handful of clunkers. I’m human; I have bad days. I’ve heard that’s somewhat typical of humans. Will you please forgive me? Thank you! Now that we’re on a roll with the whole forgiveness thing, I say we run with it. First stop: your neighbor. You know, the guy who parked his car in front of your house and got you a love letter from the HOA. It would be

much less effort to just let it go than to continue the whole “I-don’t-see-you” routine, day after week after month. Talk about work! There are a bazillion quotes on the subject of grudges and forgiveness. The one I like best is credited to Nelson Mandela― “Resentment is like drinking poison and then hoping it will kill your enemies.” That burning in your gut every time you see or think of that jerk-face next door is just your very own stomach lining waving goodbye. Is it all worth it? I think not. Apologize—even if it’s not your fault—and feel the tension just melt away. ’Tis the season of love thy neighbor, but even if you can’t go that far, at least cut out the evil stare already. You’ll feel better, he’ll feel better, and you’ll both be a bit more pleasant around the people whose feelings really matter. Life is plenty stressful enough without piling on to your own darn self. And, you don’t know what the other guy is going through, but I can guarantee it’s something, because we all have something. Don’t be somebody else’s “something.” io THURSDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2013 |

My mom is 89 years old and living on her own. i keep thinking it might be time for her to move out of her own home, but she keeps telling me she’s fine. How do you know when it is time? And, if it is better for her to live in assisted living?

this is a question i answer every day, and a surprisingly easy one! the AdLs (or “activities of daily living”) required to live safely are very simple: • Medication Management • showering/toileting • dressing • Preparing Meals • eating As long as mom is able to do all of the above with ease and without issue, she is most probably a-ok to live alone. in the event you notice mom has forgotten to take her meds, (or doubled-up on her meds), or perhaps her memory is not like it used to be, you might have concern to worry. With age comes memory loss, lack of balance/risk of falling, and also depression.

Other things to look for: • is mail being opened in a timely manner and are bills being paid? • Are any medications unaccounted for? • Are there leftovers in the refrigerator? if not, what is she eating? • is laundry overdue? Often seniors forget how to do housekeeping and wear the same clothes over and over. • is hygiene becoming an issue? • When calling mom on the phone, do you notice her memory slipping? if mom lives in a neighborhood, seek feedback from the neighbors. Mom or dad might be good at fooling you, but not as good at fooling the neighbors. Most importantly, listen to your gut. that nagging sense of worry means it’s time to be proactive vs. reactive.
