AMY BEST HANNAH “It is totally

Nov. 14, 2013]. I agree the Venture Drive/Gavilan Peak Parkway intersection has a potential for accidents and should be made safer. It should be a four-way stop, a solution that is both easy and cheap. The intersection is a two-way stop between two, four-way-stop intersections. Pedestrians and drivers might have a momentary lapse in consciousness and forget whether they are at a four-way stop or the two-way stop. It has happened to me; It must happen to others. The pedestrian at Venture who momentarily thinks it is one of the four-way stops, steps from the curb trusting that the oncoming vehicle on Gavilan Peak must, and will, stop. The Gavilan Peak driver at one of the fourway intersections, momentarily confusing it with the Venture two-way, does not stop. It has happened, and it will continue to happen with the present setup. Such confusion could be eliminated by having all three intersections be the same: Four-way stops. MCDOT says, “A major issue appears to be drivers obeying traffic laws. The greatest traffic safety device on a roadway is the driver behind the wheel.” Such a position is a cop-out that is irresponsible and unsatisfactory. A dangerous situation has been identified by residents who see it day in and day out. Surely the criteria for a fourway stop can take into account more than simple traffic volume. In this place, saving lives is the overriding criterion.

Stan Huff Anthem

unacceptable that we will have to wait until a major accident involving local foot traffic and a vehicle going the speed limit. We don’t need another ‘accident’ that could be easily fixed with some stop signs, better lighting or a traffic light! Let’s be proactive!”

TONY GAUTIER “I’ve seen quite a few

close calls myself. Should gather a group of volunteers to do shifts and just be there at the crosswalk with a stop sign to make cars stop until something is done. Or get some of those ‘kids at play’ signs you can get at Walmart and just put those in the road.”

CRISTINA SNOW “My stepson was a

close call when a car sped by without stopping. I was so angry and scared!”

HUNTER MARINA STOLWORTHY “I live

in Paseo and truly cannot understand why that stop sign was ever taken down. Don’t want to have to slow your travels? Tough! Every time someone crosses, child or adult, they are putting their lives at risk.”

JEREMY CARAWAY “I live two blocks

from there. I witness roughly a close call weekly. Also, I don’t understand how there is a stop sign a block up to a shopping center and a parking lot, two stop lights at the high school. But Venture, which is a through-street from North Gavilan and Anthem Way, would not need a stop sign. I hope it doesn’t come to someone getting hit for the county to realize it. ”

LYNDSEY BRADY “I live in Paseo and

take my kids to the park daily! We have been one of those close calls more than once. I’ve now started taking my kids up to the stop sign just so we can cross the street safely. It’s ridiculous! Something should be done!” THURSDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2013 |

After a Brush With Disaster, a Happy Ending for Miss Daisy

Sheldon Garde, 16, (left) and Kyla Hymas, 15, won first place at state for Kung Fu form, performed in sync.

hen 2-year-old Miss Daisy, a W poodle-mix, was found Oct. 29 in the desert in New River, she was

hungry, and suffering a severe case of luxating patella, or dislocated kneecaps. Daisy was in need of a surgical procedure costing upward of $3,000, but according to Anthem Pets, a Cave Creek veterinarian stepped up to perform the operation for about half the cost. A fundraising website was launched and Miss Daisy was cared for by a loving foster family while funds could be raised for corrective surgery. When word got out, the community came to the rescue. Thanks to some very generous donors, Anthem Pets met its goal during Thanksgiving weekend. Daisy will now get to have the surgery she needs to help her live a healthy, happy life. “We want to thank each and every one of you who donated and also shared her story with friends and family. Your generosity will allow Daisy many years of happiness and pain-free life. Her future is so bright,” said Lisa Kilwein of Anthem Pets. Daisy’s surgery is scheduled for early January and she will continue to be cared for by her dedicated foster family. Visit Daisy’s Facebook page to track her progress. Former Y Director Aims to Keep Anthem Beautiful

F

rom a pool of nearly 300 applicants, Anthem has selected a new parks and facilities director following the sudden departure of David Smith in September. Jim Metcalf brings 25 years of experience to his new position, having filled many roles at the Valley of the Sun YMCA. His most recent experience includes regional facilities director, where he was responsible for managing the maintenance of buildings, grounds and aquatics

facilities at several YMCA branches. Metcalf faces the challenge of maintaining all ACC parks and facilities, in addition to managing Jim Metcalf the department’s budget—the largest category of ACC’s operating budget. He assumed the position in November with a specific goal: “I plan to keep Anthem the beautiful place it is,” Metcalf said.

Enlightened GIFT GUIDE FOR

GIFT-GIVERS

If your gift ideas seem weaker as we get closer, don’t fret. We’ve got a pile of inspired ideas for everyone on your list— including the ones who say, “I have everything I want.”

The Martin Jetpack

OK, at $100,000 maybe it’s not for everyone, but it gives you an idea of the breadth of cool found at uncrate.com.

For Guys Skip the mall and click over to uncrate.com for tons

of cool guy stuff, some of it super pricey (millions) and some of it really reasonable. It has the products and the links to the manufacturers’ websites. Everything from Omnit Zombie Bells for a grizzly workout to a Martin Jetpack. Yes, a real jetpack that, for a mere $100,000, will fulfill your childhood dream. And, what man wouldn’t love bacon-flavored lip balm. Even if you don’t get any ideas from the site, (and shame on you if you don’t!), just letting the man in your life know this website exists is a gift in and of itself.

Omnit Zombie Bells

These 18- to 72-pound weights motivate the fit-conscious to build the brawn needed to fight off a zombie attack. $40–$153.

Tisbest.org

lets the giftee decide just how to spread the joy.

For Those Who Don’t Want Anything

“I have everything I could ever want…” In this case, consider a meaningful donation to a favorite charity. Make the donation in the giftee’s name and, if a tax-deduction is to be had, they’ll get a little bonus come tax time. Visit bbb.org/charity-reviews/national to see if the charity you have in mind meets the national standards for accountability. Tisbest.org allows you to give the donation to the giftee who can then choose who will benefit.

The International Rescue Committee has compiled a catalogue of gifts at gifts.rescue.org so you can send…

…A malaria-fighting mosquito net to Thailand for $18

…A pair of goats to provide a source of milk and income to a family in Somalia for $100

…Tuition, books and supplies for an Ethiopian girl to attend school for a year for $56.

Fitbit Force The updated

fitness tracker measures steps taken, distance traveled, calories burned, stairs climbed and length and quality of sleep with an LED display.

For the Health Conscious The

hot item this year? Fitness wristbands that can track exercise, sleep, even calories to motivate you toward healthier habits. The Fitbit, Jawbone Up and Nike FuelBand are leading a growing market of devices ranging from $50 to $200. Great for the technophile looking for a jump on those New Year’s resolutions. And since recent research shows children 9 to 17 are about 15 percent less fit than their parents at the same age, a fitness bracelet might motivate the kid to put down the controller and earn some fuel points.

For the Commuter/ Car-bound

Audiobook subscriptions make a great gift that keeps on giving. Many audiobook sites offer 6- or 12-month subscriptions with a new title available every month. Audiobooks. com and Audible.com offer a wide range and huge number of titles. But if your giftee loves something specific, you might be able to find a specialty site with something more personal. For example, BigFinish. com produces new, full-cast audio dramas for old TV shows. If you know someone who loves “Highlander,” “Dark Shadows,” “Judge Dredd,” “Sherlock Holmes” or “The Confessions of Dorian Gray,” BigFinish provides a new way for them to enjoy their old favorites.

Kickstarter

For Trendsetters/ Early Adopters

What’s the best way to make sure you’re not giving something your giftee already owns? Get them something not yet created. Kickstarter.com features thousands of artistic endeavors in need of funding: new music albums, new books, new board-games, new cars… By contributing roughly the cost of the final product, you can be among the first to own the creation. Or just donate a dollar to be a part of something great.

For Those Who Don’t Know What They Want In this digital universe, sorting through the proliferation to find a gem is not so easy. Consider compiling a detailed list of some of your favorite content on Netflix, YouTube, podcasts and blogs. Wrap it in a decorative book or a cool hand-picked flashdrive. True as it ever was: The best things in life are free.

For the Aspiring Creative

Giving a budding artist a sketch pad or an amateur writer a fancy pen expresses support, but more practical tools are motivation, practice and lots of encouraging feedback. If you have some experience in the same field, or know someone who does, a critique of someone’s recital, lasagna or still life can be a priceless gift and a great bonding experience. If you don’t know the first thing about cross stitching or free-verse poetry slams, give the gift of artistic growth through a workshop, getaway or online class. If the artist in your life is ready for the next step, consider the gift of a contest entry fee. How’s that for motivation? io

Many of the zoo’s favorite animals are honored in sculptures, 3D-displays and moving displays, creating a sea of colorful lights. Seasonal treats and holiday music enrich the experience. Throughout the years, some of the displays have become almost legendary. Big Blue, the 85-foot-tall tree adorned with 300,000 blue lights has greeted Valley families for years. Jengo the Talking Giraffe attracts children of all ages with his funny stories and silly holiday songs. Two new Music In Motion shows dazzle visitors with a unique choreographed lighting event. For the first time, kids and adults (weighing 45 to 250 pounds) can take a night flight above the colorful lights on the new 300-long FlyWire zipline. (Additional cost: $10. Subject to weather conditions.) Anyone taller than 38 inches can take a ride on the Polar Slide where a giant inner-tube hurls riders down a 200-foot-long track. (Additional cost: $3.) For some, strolling hand-in-hand along the pathways provides the most enchanting experience. Wear comfortable shoes and dress warm. Expect larger crowds during the weekend. ZooLights began in 1962, the year the Phoenix Zoo opened, and has become a tradition for many Valley families. Children who first saw ZooLights in the 1980s and 1990s, now bring their children to enjoy the experience. io

Smoothing Out Holiday Travel

A

college student headed home to Anthem faced the cold reality of the TSA’s Draconian rules on the eve of this past Thanksgiving. A single stray letter found its way on her airline ticket, ever-so-slightly preventing a match with her driver’s license. With remaining flights fully booked, she was turned away to face the dreary two-hour drive back to her apartment with its empty fridge. This cautionary tale serves as a reminder that holiday travel is not like regular travel. The extra volume makes for unexpected challenges. For starters, make sure the name on your ticket exactly matches your I.D. Here are more tips provided by Sky Harbor Airport.

Go Early Arrive two hours before

your flight departs, especially if you plan to park in economy areas or are checking bags. Don’t postpone the security line until the last minute. It can move slower than you expect.

Plan Your Parking Visit skyharbor. com/FindASpot on your computer or visit skyharbor.com on your device to check parking availability in different

areas. Or, call the 24-hour parking hotline at 602-273-4545. If you park in the economy lot, look for a sign at the bus stop and scan the QR Code with your smartphone to be sent a text or email reminder of where you parked.

Pack Smart The 3-ounce rule is still in effect for liquids and gels. Put them together in a plastic zipper bag for efficient scrutiny.

Food and Drink You can take food

through security, as long as it’s not deemed a liquid or gel, then you will be limited to 3 ounces. Your travel mug will be confiscated if you can’t down the brew before passing through. Just skip the liquids until you’re on the other side of the scanners.

Don’t Circle for Arrivals Wait

in your car for free at one of two cell phone lots (one on the east side of the airport and one on the west). No parking fees, no security people shooing you from the curb. io Info Transportation Security Administration, 866-289-9673, TSA-ContactCenter@dhs.gov, tsa.gov

Post Reverse-Hibernation A desert bear’s gotta eat.

IN&OUT STAFF PHOTO 32 IN&OUT | THURSDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2013

L E T ’ S E AT !

By Larry Vivola lvivola@anthemnews.com

Stuffed Pork Chops 1 boneless pork loin, cut into 2-inch rounds, about 3 pounds (or four pieces)

I

crawled out of my cave on the first day of fall this year. I opened the front door just a crack and put my face forward. No singed eyebrows. That was the first good sign. My toe tentatively touched the pavement; no thirddegree burn. Second good sign. I retrieved my newspaper without the use of oven mitts.

¼ cup of parsley, chopped 3 cloves of garlic, chopped 1 cup mozzarella, (thickshred)

Hallelujah! It’s safe to re-enter society in Arizona! I roared that reverse-hibernation was over. That’s correct. Reverse. Just as a bear hibernates in winter, I hibernate during Arizona summer. You’d be hard-pressed not to find me in my home cave, office cave, or any airconditioned environment during the relentless triple-digit days.

6 bacon strips, cooked and broken into big pieces Pinch of salt 1 tsp. black pepper 2 Tbsp. pecorino Romano cheese Olive oil

Folks said I would get accustomed to the heat. Well, folks, after eight summers in the Sonoran Desert, it just ain’t happening, and this “desert bear” has adapted to survive.

Breadcrumbs, plain Directions

I’ll share with you the first dish that popped into my head with the arrival of cooler weather: stuffed pork chops. Actually, double-stuffed pork chops. Honestly, though, this dish is always navigating its way to the front of my brain with images of oozing mozzarella and its crusty breadcrumb blanket. Plus, it meets my other favorite criteria: It’s easy. I wonder if I can call this meal a pork chop since the meat is removed from the bone. The majority of chefs will tell you that cooking meat on the bone is more flavorful. Now, I’m no TV chef, (I just play one for family and friends). But I do agree there are few things in life more beautiful than a French butchered hunk of meat on the bone. For this recipe, though, there is no flavor deficit by removing the bone, so I trade in the bone for cooking benefits and ease of purchasing. Ciao, Bella!

• •

1 Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Gently mix together parsley, garlic, bacon, cheeses, salt, pepper. 2 Slice boneless pork chop horizontally to create a pocket. Evenly distribute the stuffing between the pork chops. 3. Drizzle each chop with olive oil and rub into both sides then season both sides with salt. 4 Dredge each chop in breadcrumbs and shake off excess. 5 Place on greased, heavy baking sheet. Bake in top third of oven for approximately 40 minutes or until the middle of thickest part of chop reaches 140 degrees. 6 Remove and let rest 10 minutes before serving. Serves 4

• • • •

Larry’s Tips Let pork sit at room temperature for an hour before baking. Serve with mashed potatoes for full effect.

FENCE

’Tis the Season to

LET GO OF EVIL STARES By Chris Prickett cprickett@anthemnews.com

I

’ve had this writing gig for eightplus years now. Accounting for the occasional double issue, a sprinkling of missed deadlines, and a hissy-fit or three, I’m somewhere north of 300 columns that have made the editor’s cut. I don’t pretend to be the second coming of Walt Whitman; I shoot for mildly entertaining bathroom reading. There are a few memorable ones (my infamous bathtub centerfold, [“Retro-resolutions Are Hot,” In&Out, Dec. 28, 2007] comes to mind), and definitely a handful of clunkers. I’m human; I have bad days. I’ve heard that’s somewhat typical of humans. Will you please forgive me? Thank you! Now that we’re on a roll with the whole forgiveness thing, I say we run with it. First stop: your neighbor. You know, the guy who parked his car in front of your house and got you a love letter from the HOA. It would be

much less effort to just let it go than to continue the whole “I-don’t-see-you” routine, day after week after month. Talk about work! There are a bazillion quotes on the subject of grudges and forgiveness. The one I like best is credited to Nelson Mandela― “Resentment is like drinking poison and then hoping it will kill your enemies.” That burning in your gut every time you see or think of that jerk-face next door is just your very own stomach lining waving goodbye. Is it all worth it? I think not. Apologize—even if it’s not your fault—and feel the tension just melt away. ’Tis the season of love thy neighbor, but even if you can’t go that far, at least cut out the evil stare already. You’ll feel better, he’ll feel better, and you’ll both be a bit more pleasant around the people whose feelings really matter. Life is plenty stressful enough without piling on to your own darn self. And, you don’t know what the other guy is going through, but I can guarantee it’s something, because we all have something. Don’t be somebody else’s “something.” io THURSDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2013 |

Assisted Living:

Q:

is it time?

My mom is 89 years old and living on her own. i keep thinking it might be time for her to move out of her own home, but she keeps telling me she’s fine. How do you know when it is time? And, if it is better for her to live in assisted living?

A:

this is a question i answer every day, and a surprisingly easy one! the AdLs (or “activities of daily living”) required to live safely are very simple: • Medication Management • showering/toileting • dressing • Preparing Meals • eating As long as mom is able to do all of the above with ease and without issue, she is most probably a-ok to live alone. in the event you notice mom has forgotten to take her meds, (or doubled-up on her meds), or perhaps her memory is not like it used to be, you might have concern to worry. With age comes memory loss, lack of balance/risk of falling, and also depression.

Other things to look for: • is mail being opened in a timely manner and are bills being paid? • Are any medications unaccounted for? • Are there leftovers in the refrigerator? if not, what is she eating? • is laundry overdue? Often seniors forget how to do housekeeping and wear the same clothes over and over. • is hygiene becoming an issue? • When calling mom on the phone, do you notice her memory slipping? if mom lives in a neighborhood, seek feedback from the neighbors. Mom or dad might be good at fooling you, but not as good at fooling the neighbors. Most importantly, listen to your gut. that nagging sense of worry means it’s time to be proactive vs. reactive.

Indedpendent Living? Assisted Living? Living with Me (or my brother/sister)? Ask the experts! Cheryl Ables began working

in the senior care field 10 years ago, after taking care of her parents and grandparent while raising her children. Sam Ile and his family have been in the business of assisted living homes for more than 20 years. Sam and Cheryl are approaching ten years as owners of Anthem Senior Living. They also operate Eldermom, a senior placement service and, now, Anthem Senior Retreat Assisted Living home. Sam and Cheryl are experts at the unique challenges posed by aging parents. Have a question? Write or call today! 602-909-9550,
