out happy at the fact the park would remain open in Barb’s memory for pets and their owners. It was only toward the end of the article that I had to pick my jaw off the ground at the statement, “Airdo said he preferred not to have pit bulls.” I did not know Barbara, but would have hoped she would have been disheartened at this thought. The stereotype of a pit bull needs to change. It is the owners who are responsible for a pet’s behavior, not the dog itself—whether it be poodle, Pekingese or pit bull. Maybe the original name of the park shouldn’t have changed after all.

DVUSD Brings Back Free All-day Kindergarten Kindergartners at Gavilan Peak School study Mandarin Chinese. Parents who opted for the full-day program paid $235 per month. By Amanda Niemerg aniemerg@anthemnews.com
A
district-commissioned analysis presented to the Deer Valley Unified School District Board led to a vote at its Tuesday, Nov. 26 meeting to re-institute free all-day kindergarten. The analysis, conducted by an independent demographic consulting firm, showed a decline in enrollment at district schools with a projected decline continuing as far out as 2024. The report also showed the enrollment of students ages 5–13 decreasing. Chief among the causes of the decline, according to the report: competition from charter and private schools, and lack of tuition-free fullday kindergarten. More than a dozen parents and teachers attended the Nov. 26 board meeting to show support for the return of free full-day kindergarten to district schools. The three board members in attendance approved the measure, with a request to restrict class size to 24 students per teacher. DVUSD eliminated full-day kindergarten after the state cut funding
during the recession. The proliferation of charter and private schools coupled with the tumult from the housing market pulled thousands of students out of district schools, taking with them per-pupil funding from the state. “We are striving to be not just the top district in Arizona, but the top in the nation and not offer[ing] all-day K to me seems to be the absolute worst thing we can do,” DVUSD Board President Kelly Gorman said. The implementation of the kindergarten program is projected to cost the district $2.4 million. The cost will be partially offset by state funds with the increased enrollment. No decision was made on how to fund the balance of the cost. “As for paying for it, there is no easy solution… It is an investment for our future… It is an investment we can’t afford not to make,” Gorman said. The decision comes in time for open enrollment season. io FOR OPEN ENROLLMENT INFORMATION VISIT anthemnews.com/shopping-season-for-school THURSDAY, DECEMBER 5, 2013 |

Adventures for a New Generation After 15 years, the iconic play structure at Adventure Playground requires replacement.

A
s some of the toddlers who once played on the colorful slides and majestic spires of Adventure Playground are now about to get drivers’ licenses, the play structure that has come to define Anthem on real estate websites to the world has reached the end of its lifespan. The wood decking on the aging structure required ongoing maintenance by Anthem Community Council for years and, in 2011, Council told In&Out equipment replacement was slated for 2014. Council unveiled plans for a complete demolition and replacement of the playground equipment and splash pad in the community park at its Nov. 20 meeting. Miracle Playgrounds, builder of the splash pad at Liberty Bell Park, presented the renovation concept. (Miracle Playgrounds acquired HAGS of Sweden, the company which built the original Adventure Playground.) Preliminary design plans include a three-mega-tower structure similar in size and roofline height, but uses more durable material, including steel posts and decks. Rails will have gator grips etched into the steel-powder coating, and the structure will be finished with antimicrobial paint. Modifications to the ramp accessing the tri-towers bring it into compliance with ADA guidelines. Also slated for replacement is the smaller play structure on the south end of the playground adjacent to the splash pad with a rocks-and-ropes course. The concept also replaces the smaller play structure for 2- to 5-yearolds and it will remain shaded.

NEWS Âť COMMUNITY Plans for the splash pad eliminate the concrete spray toys, replacing them with stainless steel and translucent polymers. As for surfacing, Miracle Playgrounds suggested the removal of most of the sand in the play areas and replacement with engineered wood fiber and pour-in-place rubber. An Anthem resident spoke in opposition to complete removal of sand, and suggested retaining a designated sand play area.
The concrete water toys, right, disappear with the proposal’s updated splash pad, above.

The proposed project, to be funded from the reserve fund as part of the 2014 budget, costs an estimated $676,178. Anthem Community Council expects to consider formal approval at its monthly meeting, Wednesday, Jan. 22. io

FENCE
Holiday Get-Together By Chris Prickett cprickett@anthemnews.com
T
he only thing dumber than asking me for advice on handling holiday guests is following it. My standard strategy is to fake client appointments and hide out at the mall until my wife texts me the “all-clear.” I just pretend the food court is my festive international smorgasbord and eat my feelings away.
L A V I SURV ES
Given the disclaimer above, here are some thoughts from a guy who’s been there, done that, and worn the gravy boat.
Keep Your Fingers Off the Buttons
Some people can talk religion and politics calmly; not at my house. If you’re a non-practicing person and find yourself at a blessed table, close your eyes, bow your head and play nice during the pre-meal benediction. If the roles are reversed, pray for their heathen souls while you park the car and be grateful they didn’t over-cook the Tofurkey. Feel free to draw the line at burnt offerings—unless it’s an unintended result of a first-time cook, then just choke it down the best you can. While you’re at it, let the ghosts of family dramas past stay buried, at least for the time being. They’re not getting excorsized once the afterdinner drinks start flowing, that’s for certain.
U Q I N H TEC Get Out of the House
We have a hockey night excursion and a trip to Butterfly Wonderland on the holiday docket. Contrasting events for sure, but the house stays clean, we can split up on the car ride, and the fighting is relegated to inside the rink. I can’t imagine butterfly watching causing much trouble, but we’ll see…
Christmas with the Crankies
Little ones have a tiny tolerance for long lines, long stories, long dinners and long good-byes. Ironically, those tend to converge during the holidays. Keep your expectations right-sized in these matters. Older folks may be more tolerant (or not), but keep their needs and limits in mind, too. Splitting up the clan by age-appropriate activity might make more sense than a multigenerational jamboree. No plan is perfect, but if you deck your halls with a dash of tolerance, a sprinkling of selflessness and a heaping holiday helping of K.Y.B.M.S., we might ring in a happy New Year... instead of each other’s necks. io THURSDAY, DECEMBER 5, 2013 |

PLAYGROUND PICKS “Anthem’s iconic Adventure
Playground is undergoing complete replacement in conjunction with its 15-year anniversary. What changes would you like to see?”
Amanda Huntington
Alicia McGee
Lisa Stezaker
Alison Ward
“I would like to see the entire playground enclosed so that there are no gaps in the fence and the main entrance gated. If you have more than one child it is hard to keep both in view in a park this big. As far as equipment, I am happy.”
“We meet at the park often with Anthem Moms and Munchkins. I would like to see more grassy areas and shade trees. I would like to see the wood planking on the play structure go away, too. Better visibility on the structure itself so you can see your kids. Instead of sand, I would like to see recycled rubber mulch.”
“Expansion of the splash pad and more toys for the little kids like swings. More sitting areas for adults.”
“I would like to see age-appropriate task-type activities that challenge the child incorporating play and skill building, because play is their work. Now, it’s geared to physical and social. More learning opportunities would be good.”
