HOA Spends and Charges Without Resident Input
W
e have lived in Anthem for three years. This is not our first home in a planned community with an HOA. It is, however, the first time we have seen an increase in HOA fees. Our previous HOA decreased fees as the community grew, and, yes, we remodeled the community center while decreasing the HOA fees. I do not understand how an HOA that we pay to maintain our neighborhoods has the ability to spend our money without input from the community. We did not vote for the HOA to move into a new building or put up an electric sign. Is it really necessary to know what time it is or the temperature when we drive down Anthem Way? Who does the HOA work for? Is it not the community? Today, I was at the community center and for the first time walked the pool area, (we only use the gym). I was quite pleased to see the barbecue with a nice sitting area for group activities. I asked the person who was washing down the area about the process to use it. He told me we have to reserve it, and that he has very rarely seen it used. I was quite surprised to find out it costs $48/hour to use. No wonder it rarely gets used! We wouldn’t mind paying something, as there are costs involved (i.e. fuel for the barbecue and cleanup), however I don’t see our neighbors leaving a mess behind. I think we have more than paid for the barbecue and seating. As a neighborhood, we pay for use of these areas. Why, then, does our HOA feel it is necessary to continue to take advantage of its residents?

Thanks for a Memorable Homecoming
T
his letter is written in an effort to personally thank everyone whose participation in making the homecoming of our son Sgt. Austin Burnham (U.S. Army), such a wonderful and memorable experience last November. It was truly an amazing sight to see such support from the Anthem community, and it certainly was an event that neither we nor Austin will ever forget. Unfortunately, we cannot thank everyone by name, but we want to recognize and thank the following individuals and organizations specifically for making it such a memorable event.
• Mary Ann Derryberry • PostNet of Anthem (Owners Lanny and Linda Nelson) • Nate (for an awesome “Welcome Home” banner) • KNXV-TV Channel 15 News • Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office • Daisy Mountain Fire Department
Thanks to all the residents, neighbors and military veterans of Anthem who put American flags in our yard, made welcome-home posters, and extended a welcome-home handshake or hug to Austin. Also, we want to thank the Anthem community for not only welcoming Austin home to the United States, but for making us feel so welcome within the Anthem community. It is truly inspiring to know there is so much goodness in this community. Sgt. Burnham is currently stationed at Fort Bragg, NC and is assigned to 82nd Airborne Division, 1st Brigade, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment. Sgt. Burnham has received orders to deploy to Afghanistan within the next few months. Thanks to the Anthem community for all your well wishes and support. May God bless each of you and may God bless the U.S.A.

conducted by Notre Dame and the University of North Carolina. The studies concluded kindergarten cutoff dates that allow younger children into kindergarten have higher rates of ADHD diagnosis. Sleep Disorders The American Academy of Pediatrics found sleep disorders contribute to a child’s behavior. And, both the University of Arizona and the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard University found that children with sleep-disordered breathing exhibited symptoms similar to ADHD including hyperactivity, attention problems, aggressivity and lower social competence. Gifted Intellect ADHD has been confused with a gifted intellect. In an Indiana University study, those studying to become school counselors were given a brief description of a child with either a gifted intellect or ADHD. The students were much more likely to diagnose the child as having ADHD.

This should not be the norm, according to Dr. Raun Melmed, founder of the Melmed Center in Scottsdale specializing in behavioral, developmental and educational challenges in children and adults. “ADHD is a neurobiological disorder which begins in childhood and often continues through into adulthood… There are two important aspects which need to be considered before making the diagnosis. The first is the presence of symptoms of inattention, distractibility, impulsivity and hyperactivity... Now anyone might say that they have many of these types of symptoms and they are doing fine, so what’s the big deal? That leads us

“What we used to call delinquency or other disorders of moral turpitude, are now being scrutinized in a more in-depth fashion… No longer will calling these children lazy, crazy or stupid suffice as an explanation. So that’s the good news. Indeed, in some settings, ADHD might actually be underdiagnosed.” —Dr. Raun Melmed

to the second aspect which is that the symptoms must be present in at least two settings, such as at school and at home and even more importantly, the symptoms must be causing dysfunction or harm. So the presence of the symptoms is not enough to make the diagnosis—the individual must be suffering as consequence, such as social isolation, school failure or family disruption,” Melmed said. Causes: Genetic & Environmental The National Resource Center on ADHD states heredity makes the largest contribution to the expression of ADHD. Alcohol and tobacco use during pregnancy, exposure to lead, or brain injury are also possible contributors. No research has conclusively found too much television or sugar contribute to ADHD’s harshest symptoms. While studies in Britain suggest food additives and preservatives play a role in hyperactivity, more research is being conducted to confirm those findings. “There certainly might be other environmental factors responsible for the increase—in the same way we have seen a rise in the diagnosis of conditions such as diabetes, asthma and autism,” Melmed said. Accurate Diagnosis is Key Last summer, the FDA approved a new diagnostic tool that uses an EEG to help diagnose ADHD. Research shows the ratio of two standard brain waves—theta and beta—is higher for children with ADHD. The test, called the Neuropsychiatric EEGBased Assessment Aid (NEBA) System is noninvasive and takes about 20 minutes. When used in conjunction with tools such as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), questionnaires, behavioral and IQ testing, and physical exams, the NEBA System can help accurately diagnose ADHD. “The diagnosis is the first step and the best coping tool is knowledge,” said Melmed. io

earing the letters “ADHD” hit like a thud in my head and heart. As I sat across the developmental pediatrician, my husband beside me, our son playing noisily on the floor, I inhaled and tried to hear what she said next over the sudden racing of my thoughts. And then, relief. We had an answer. Now we had a jumping off point. CY

Before this, we dealt with everything from tantrums to sleepless nights to being told “he’s just too difficult to include in our preschool group any more.” Add in the countless meetings with his teacher (who was amazing and so willing to communicate with us and help him in any way she could), watching him play alone on the playground, and diffusing a lot of situations while strangers stared and whispered around us. Since the diagnosis, I’ve done a lot of research and reading. A lot. We opted out of medication and instead, changed our diet and have worked out a system at home and school. I met with our son’s student services staff at school and we have a plan. He is getting additional help and support at school and we made a plan for changes at home. He has made major improvements in his behavior and is doing better. People are afraid of the ADHD label. I was, too. There is still a lot of stigma and misunderstanding. What I have learned is the label doesn’t define or change our child. Our son is still who he has always been: smart, funny, kind, loving. And now, we can help him be those things in school and in social situations that used to be very difficult for him. io IN&OUT STAFF PHOTO For more CHADD.org

Emma Prickett’s artistic interpretation of two of the characters from the cult classic YouTube video, “Don’t Hug Me, I’m Scared.”
ARTWORK BY EMMA PRICKETT
Too Quick to Judge…
Usually I have to defend against it. This time (happily), I am the guilty party. By Chris Prickett cprickett@anthemnews.com
T
his is, by far, the toughest column I’ve ever written. As parents, we struggle to protect our children from harm while preparing them to face a world that is not always very kind. As I sat at a local restaurant, eating dinner with my wife and daughter Emma, I noticed a young woman constantly sneaking glances at Emma. As the evening progressed, I became increasingly agitated.
18

Emma has Asperger’s. Chances are you don’t really know what that is, and you are not in the minority. From my experience, it is the most misdiagnosed, misunderstood and misinterpreted “thing” I’ve ever come across. Some call it a “disorder,” or a “syndrome” or even a “disease.” I’ve heard it described as a mild form of autism or “highly functional” autism. I call it a discovery. “Aspies” tend to be highly creative and socially awkward. Actor Dan Aykroyd and actress Daryl Hannah are Aspies, as is the
creator of the NBC show “Community,” Dan Harmon. Singer Susan Boyle and this year’s Miss Montana, Alexis Wineman, also have it. Though not confirmed, Bill Gates, Thomas Edison and some guy named Einstein have also exhibited many of the classic traits. You see, Aspies aren’t stupid, just different. The best description I’ve heard of the Asperger’s mind is “like having state-of-the-art software with last year’s computer.” The smarts are there, the difficulty is in the processing. Emma is a phenomenal sketch artist and is transferring that talent to graphic design. She is almost never without a sketch pad. She can draw almost as well on a computer as she does with pencil and paper. She writes amazing sci-fi/fantasy stories and, unlike her dad, uses nearly perfect grammar. She can do complex math in her head. Ironically, she struggles mightily in high school. Aspies and “Common Core” just don’t mix very well, it seems. Emma, like most Asperger’s kids, learns differently than other kids. And, they can be a bit stubborn. Aspies also tend to march to their own drummer. Emma dresses the way she likes, sometimes mixing a little steam punk, maybe some “Doctor Who,” and a few of her own ideas into one original kid. Conformity doesn’t like original. Some people stare and whisper. Some kids are cruel. And, dad can get a bit defensive. So, as we got up to leave the restaurant, this young woman, whom I’ve grown to silently despise during the past 30 minutes, grabbed my daughter’s attention—Papa Bear was ready to pounce. “Excuse me,” she said. “I’m sorry for staring, but I was watching you draw. You are an amazing artist!” Emma smiled, and replied, “Thanks, you made my day!” Papa Bear was over the moon.

Try Respite. A D V E R T I S E M E N T
You need the Rest; Mom will love the care.
Q:
“Taking care of my mother takes increasingly more of my time. I check on her several times a day, and each time she adds more to my list… Pharmacy, grocery, scheduling doctor appointments, bill payments. I’m neglecting my job, my family, myself. I can’t keep up, but I can’t neglect her. When will it end?”
A:
Taking care of a loved one, whether a child or a senior, is a lot of work and if the strain is taking a toll on you and your family, you might want to look at your options. Don’t wait for a crisis before gathering information. The best decisions are made without time pressures. And don’t assume you know what your parent wants. In my 10 years experience, it amazes me how many families treat this topic as taboo.
in assisted living. Respite is simply a short-term stay (usually a minimum of two weeks). Mom will be in great hands and will get a change of scenery. She’ll meet new peers, be doted on by caregivers, have her every meal prepared, play games, enjoy live entertainment, have massage therapy, get her hair and nails done—and be cared for with dignity and respect. In other words, she can get a taste of assisted living lifestyle before committing to it.
Change is never easy, but a Here’s a great test: You need a positive change might be right break, right? Take a vacation, staycation or just take a break from mom around the corner for everyone involved! and sign her up for a “respite” stay
