6 REASONS

YOUR HOUSE SITS UNSOLD Dear Doreen, I keep hearing the market is getting better but my house has been on the market with three different agents in the last year and still hasn’t sold. I know it’s priced correctly—It is so beautiful! What’s going on? Yearning to Sell Dear Yearning, We all look at the “days on market” figure; the bigger the number, the more the buyer figures the house is overpriced Send your real estate (or in poor repair, bad questions to Doreen.Drew location, etc). Here @ColdwellBanker.com are some things that contribute to that number. Be brutally honest and see which of these apply to your house. 1. The Home is Overpriced This is the #1 culprit. We all think our house is worth top dollar. But buyers ultimately set the price by what they are willing to pay. 2. The Home Doesn’t Show Well Your competition are those beautiful model homes buyers love to explore. De-clutter down to bare bones, clean and clean some more. Make your home as neutral as possible. (Don’t miss 4 more reasons a house lingers on the market… Coming next week!)

Neighbors Help Welcome Seven New Family Members

M

y family has just taken in our seven nephews/nieces (whom we had only met once). We had a week to prepare and then drive to Kansas, where they had been in foster care for the last two years. We are working toward adopting them. The Northside Home School group, our church (Hosanna Christian Fellowship) and several of my daughter's friends from Boulder Creek donated time to paint rooms, and gave us car seats, beds, bedding… things we would need. Some brought us meals… We are so blessed by all the support and prayers from everyone here. We live in a great community! The kids have been in Anthem now for four days and they are doing well!

Council Not Obliged to Get Resident Approval

B

ased upon the last In&Out letter to the editor there appears to be a misunderstanding as to the rights of the residents before the Anthem Community Council. [“HOA Spends and Charges Without Resident Input,” Feb. 13.] First, the Council is not an HOA; it is a corporation filed with the Arizona Corporation Commission. It has elected residents that sit on its board and a staff that runs its community assets: buildings, parks, etc. We, the residents are not members of the Council and have no voting rights; it is a representative form of government and not a democracy. The Council collects and spends monies to run and operate its business. It can sell and acquire property without resident approval. However, in my last 12 years as a resident, the boards have reached out and sought resident input on many issues including purchases. So, [to comment on an issue] attend the monthly community meetings. While effective, at the end of the day, Anthem residents elected to represent us vote on issues, purchases and selling of assets without our vote. And, if you feel strongly about how our community is run, one can sit on a committee or run for a seat on the Council.

n Feb. 9, Fellowship Church held its final service before closing its doors for good, leaving its tenant, the Caepe School, scrambling to find a new home in the middle of the school year. Fellowship’s financial struggles became evident in 2011 when it shut down its preschool that had served the community for seven years. It then leased the 8,000-square-foot space to the Caepe School, which was excited about the move and its plans to grow its enrollment. But Fellowship’s continued woes lead to drastic action. “Fellowship contacted us to take over and transition this ministry after they made the decision to no longer carry on,” said Tony Burgarello, executive pastor of operations of Christ Church of the Valley. CCV, he said, agreed to a bank lease with an option to purchase the building. The development forced the Caepe into a sudden move, ironically, back to 42212 N. 41st Drive where it began six years ago—the same building Anthem Prep vacated last year when Cross of Christ Church expelled North Valley Christian Academy in favor of the Great Hearts school.

“It is a challenge to move a school no matter how you slice it,” said Tamara Lee, head of the Caepe. “We are so very grateful for the financial assistance that CCV is providing to us to make this happen. In addition, the CCV team is working alongside us to help with labor, vendors and even providing lunch for our community volunteer day…” As for Fellowship’s congregation, Burgarello told In&Out, “We welcome that congregation, but we recognize there’s a lot of great churches. If we’re a fit for them… we’d love to have them.” CCV’s Peoria location already draws 1,500 or so Anthem residents, but Burgarello said CCV had not been actively pursuing a presence in the North Valley. CCV Anthem plans to hold its first services the weekend of April 5–6. The Caepe reopened in its old location Feb. 20, and the Brighter Beginnings preschool plans to reopen Monday, March 3. Lee predicts the school will thrive in its new and former home. “We now have a huge, fenced field for the playground equipment, our gardens, recess, running, volleyball… outdoor community events and much more.” A reopening celebration is planned Thursday, March 13. io THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2014 |

An Unhealthy Obsession With Healthy Eating

Sarah’s obsession with healthy eating has led to a ban on all food labels in her house. Her mother painstakingly removes or obscures all ingredient and nutrition labels. IN&OUT STAFF PHOTO

A

s a nation, we’re at the beginning of a food revolution. A topic of almost daily discussion―what to consume and how to consume it to help curb obesity, diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, cancer and a host of other diseases. But some have taken healthful eating to a dangerous extreme. It’s being called orthorexia nervosa, a form of disordered eating described as an “unhealthy obsession” with otherwise healthful eating. Sufferers obsess about the quality of their food, to the exclusion of many

other foods. While it is not a clinically recognized condition, treatment is available. On the outside, 16-yearold Sarah looks like most girls her age. But the last few years of her life have been a mighty struggle with orthorexia. After reading [“Damaged Reflections,” In&Out, Nov. 14], she and her mom decided to contact In&Out to share her story in an effort to turn her battle into something positive for herself and, hopefully, others. She can’t remember the moment it began, but remembers scouring food labels for fat content and calories back in fifth grade. By seventh, she would give

Orthorexia

comes from the Greek “orthos,” meaning straight or proper, and “orexia,” meaning appetite. Orthorexics fixate on foods that make them feel pure and healthy, to the exclusion of foods with: • Artificial colors, flavors or preservatives • Pesticides, genetic modification • Unhealthy fat, sugar or added salt

CURRENTS » HEALTH away her lunch because she thought not eating was the way to slim down. By ninth grade, she was on a vegan diet. Her mom said, “It was complete obsession. I mean, the amount of time she spent in the kitchen, looking at food and figuring out what she was going to eat… This was her whole world.” People who struggle with orthorexia eliminate foods, or whole food groups like grains, white flour, sugar or salt from their diets, according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. In extreme cases, their diet becomes so limited malnutrition can set in. “I wasn’t concerned about gaining weight. I would just feel like a garbage can if it wasn’t all natural. And then when all natural wasn’t enough, it was all organic. Then it was no wheat,” said Sarah. Back home in Anthem after 55 days of inpatient care, Sarah is not allowed to study food labels anymore. In fact, her mom removes all

the labels she can, and places black tape over the ones she can’t. Nor is Sarah allowed to know how much she weighs. This is part of recovery. And, while she’s making progress, she’s got a ways to go. “Eating disorders are silent diseases. Nobody talks about them. We want to talk about them,” said Sarah’s mom. “While this is her story, eating disorders are as unique as individuals. If you are concerned about a loved one or friend, their behaviors and patterns may be very different.” Sarah’s mom encourages friends and family to take action if they suspect an eating disorder. “Don’t ignore them if you are concerned,” she said. “And, don’t wait.” “If you’re worried about being perfect…” Sarah paused for a long time. “You’re already a perfect you. Everybody’s different for a reason. It’s hard to accept, it really is. But you have to love yourself because you’re with yourself your whole life so its gonna suck if you can’t love yourself.”

EATING DISORDER FACTS

• Up to 2.7 percent of 13- to 18-yearolds suffer from an eating disorder. • Researchers found many respondents were reluctant to admit to eating disorders, resulting in an almost certain under reporting of the prevalence. • According to a study funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, most adolescents affected by an eating disorder do not receive treatment. • Hospitalization rates for eating disorders increased 18 percent between 1999 and 2006, and continue to rise. • An eating disorder is usually accompanied by another psychiatric disorder such as depression. • Suicidal thinking is higher in those with eating disorders than in those without. • Anorexia nervosa is the most deadly mental disorder with a mortality rate of around 10 percent.

Try Respite. A D V E R T I S E M E N T

You need the Rest; Mom will love the care.

Q:

“Taking care of my mother takes increasingly more of my time. I check on her several times a day, and each time she adds more to my list… Pharmacy, grocery, scheduling doctor appointments, bill payments. I’m neglecting my job, my family, myself. I can’t keep up, but I can’t neglect her. When will it end?”

A:

Taking care of a loved one, whether a child or a senior, is a lot of work and if the strain is taking a toll on you and your family, you might want to look at your options. Don’t wait for a crisis before gathering information. The best decisions are made without time pressures. And don’t assume you know what your parent wants. In my 10 years experience, it amazes me how many families treat this topic as taboo.

in assisted living. Respite is simply a short-term stay (usually a minimum of two weeks). Mom will be in great hands and will get a change of scenery. She’ll meet new peers, be doted on by caregivers, have her every meal prepared, play games, enjoy live entertainment, have massage therapy, get her hair and nails done—and be cared for with dignity and respect. In other words, she can get a taste of assisted living lifestyle before committing to it.

Change is never easy, but a Here’s a great test: You need a positive change might be right break, right? Take a vacation, staycation or just take a break from mom around the corner for everyone involved! and sign her up for a “respite” stay

FENCE

By Chris Prickett cprickett@anthemnews.com

S

ix months ago, my darling wife of 19 years decided to fill the vacant position of transaction coordinator for my real estate business. The interview process went quickly. The training process continues. She hopes to have me trained by Columbus Day. I received several sound tips for success when I decided (who am I kidding? …when I was told) to bring the lovely Mrs. Prickett on board, and here is how we’ve managed to smash those well-meaning tips to smithereens. Maintain Separate Workspaces I do have a real office and Dianne mostly works from home, but I also work from home. She has a dedicated “office” at home but insists on using my printer sometimes and I’m not quite sure why; (something about hers being “dotmatrix”). But it always seems to be at the exact moment I need to work which, I guess, is too much anyway. No bloodshed yet, but the evil stares are increasing. Always Respect Each Other Define respect, please. Is the random screaming of instructions through two walls in order to get attention respectful if the scream is followed by the phrase “OK, Sweetie?” Put the Marriage Ahead of Work This might mean not asking “What’s for dinner?” while your spouse is frantically finishing up the stack of tasks that you threw at her 30 minutes ago.

Yeah… Working on that. Clearly Define Your Roles My role: Grow the business enough to make her crazy. Her role: Take enough anti-crazy pills and No-Doze® so she can handle all the stuff I throw at her. Know When to Ask for Help I have to admit, I’m good at this one. I usually scream for help through two walls, and require immediate resolution to the state of “emergency” I declared immediately after creating it. She needs to work on juggling the other several emergencies I created earlier. This has been a bit of a challenge. I think she has to “work smarter, not harder.” In all, I think it’s working out pretty well. I know this because my dear bride just bought me a very thoughtful gift; my very own folding cot to sleep on. I’m also feeling quite fortunate that it’s been a mild winter. io THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2014 |
