So Nice, it Will Sell in… 60–90 Days
Dear Doreen, I have been interviewing agents to sell my house and several said to expect a 60- to 90-day selling time. But one agent said he liked it so much, he really thought it would sell in a week or less. Is this possible? Is he exaggerating? —Hoping for a Short Sale Dear HSS, I know I wasn’t the one who said it would sell in a week! Could the agent have been a buyer? Yes, realtors buy houses too :) But, in today’s market, selling in less than a week—and for top dollar—isn’t likely. If you want to price it below market value, then it
could happen. But, if I remember correctly, you need to come out with as much money as possible in order to buy in another state. I once joked with a homeowner, saying, “Your home is so lovely, it will sell in five minutes.” Do I have to tell you how much I regretted it? The house took three months to sell and they reminded me of my comment at least once a week! I’ve learned to be very careful what I say, since it will be remembered. Count me in on the 60–90 group, at least for this home at this time. —Doreen

Mom Stopped Bathing. Help! A D V E R T I S E M E N T
Q: A:
“As my mother has gotten less mobile, she has let bathing fall by the wayside, it seems. As her son, I’m uncomfortable with this topic. What should I do?”
There are several reasons seniors might have trouble with hygiene. And this is something that requires your attention.
Or, depression could be the culprit. This can spiral downward quickly if the depression is tied to the loss of independence your mom is feeling.
My guess is showering is not the only thing mom’s having trouble with. Poor hygiene is a warning sign that she might not be OK on her own any more.
Maybe she just needs help moving around in the shower. This can raise issues of independence and modesty. But looking the other way in order to protect her feelings might be dangerous.
Is it possible she’s not aware her hygiene has become an issue? This could be a sign of memory loss. According to the CDC, some 80,000 U.S. seniors have non-fatal bathroom injuries every year. And fear of falling might be behind your mother’s aversion to the bath.
Ask mom gently why she’s not showering. Then seek the help she needs. A third party is often the answer. We find residents at Anthem Senior Living or Anthem Senior Retreat quickly transition to the new routine and accept assistance better than if it were a family member.
Independent Living? Assisted Living? Living with Me (or my brother/sister)? Ask the experts! Cheryl Ables began working
in the senior care field 10 years ago, after taking care of her parents and grandparent while raising her children. Sam Ile and his family have been in the business of assisted living homes for more than 20 years. Sam and Cheryl are approaching ten years as owners of Anthem Senior Living. They also operate Eldermom, a senior placement service and, now, Anthem Senior Retreat Assisted Living home. Sam and Cheryl are experts at the unique challenges posed by aging parents. Have a question? Write or call today! 602-909-9550,

Dangerous Intersection Will Get Traffic Signal
By Karen Goveia kgoveia@anthemnews.com
T
he crosswalk to Anthem’s community park at Gavilan Peak Parkway and Venture Drive will soon be much safer. The county plans to install a High Intensity Activated Crosswalk signal— a pedestrian-activated traffic light—this summer. The intersection, sandwiched between two four-way stops on Gavilan Peak Parkway has been a hot button among Anthem residents who have clamored for safety improvements due to the volume of pedestrian and vehicle
traffic. [See “Comments from Anthem News Facebook,” In&Out, Dec. 12, 2013.] The intersection that connects Venture Drive to the park failed to meet the criteria for a light last June when Maricopa County Department of Transportation assessed the corner, according to spokesperson Roberta Bonaski. But, a follow-up study late last year determined a signal would be “a significant community and traffic safety enhancement,” Bonaski said. io
How HAWK Works For an example of a HAWK signal, look to the intersection on Scottsdale Road connecting Kierland Commons with Scottsdale Quarter. When the crosswalk button is activated by a pedestrian, the signal goes through a series of traffic light sequences that directs motorists to stop for pedestrian traffic. The
signal then goes dark allowing motorists to proceed through the intersection. The signal faces traffic approaching the crosswalk; It is not a four-way signal.
FACEBOOK CHATTER Reader thoughts about mobile devices in class. [See, “Students, take out your smartphones,” In&Out Jan. 23.] I think it is a fantastic idea. It’s “personal” electronic devices. No budget cuts for that. My son is an eighth grader and currently uses his iPod touch in class. Woman Escapes Highway Shooter
She was driving home from church when a gunman fired several shots at her vehicle; one drew blood from her forehead. Police need help finding the suspect or suspects.

P
olice are still searching for the suspect(s) in a shooting on I-17 just south of Carefree Highway last week. The incident occurred between 9:30–10 p.m., Monday, Jan. 27 when a 58-year-old area resident drove her FJ Cruiser north on I-17 on her way home from church. Report information regarding the incident to Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS or the Violent Crimes Bureau at 602-262-6141.
Cheryl [her full name is being withheld for her safety] drove in the middle lane with cruise control activated when she spotted a truck in the right lane traveling at a slower rate. As she 14

approached Carefree Highway, she looked in the mirror and saw the truck had sped up. “He pulled up next to me and ‘boom,’ just like that [the bullet went] through my window and out my other window, then I feel warm stuff running down my face and I’m thinking, ‘Did I just get shot?’ ” Cheryl said. Then another shot was fired, Cheryl said, this time striking her right rear tire. Cheryl kept driving. “There was no way I was going to stop and there was no way I was going to let him get next to me again,” she said. A third shot hit the rear-mounted spare tire. Somehow, during the ordeal, Cheryl managed to dial her husband to alert him as to what was happening and
directed him to call 9-1-1. She exited at Carefree Highway and turned east without stopping at the light— the truck still tailing her while she focused on her mission of getting home. As Cheryl maneuvered her vehicle into a residential area off 27th Drive, the truck ended its pursuit, and Cheryl made it home. Remarkably, it turned out the bullet only grazed her forehead, slicing off part of her bangs, leaving Cheryl unharmed.

“I saw the hair on my sweatshirt and that’s how I knew how close it was,” she said.

With little to go on, police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspect(s).

The suspect vehicle, according to Phoenix Police, is described as an older model dark blue pickup, single cab, two-door. The vehicle was last seen eastbound on Carefree Highway from 27th Drive.

Recounting the details, Cheryl remained calm but said she is shocked as to how this incident could occur in the quiet northern corridor of the Valley. “When we moved here 10 years ago, we moved up here to get away from the gunshots we heard at night,” Cheryl said of her former residence. As for how she persevered through the approximate five-minute ordeal which she said felt like an hour, Cheryl said, “I’m a born-again Christian… I believe God was with me whether I was going into eternity or not.” io FOR MORE PHOTOS, GO TO ANTHEMNEWS.COM/DRIVER-SHOT

FINDING FRESH FLOWERS “With the absence of florists
in town, where do you buy flowers? Or, do you just not send flowers as often?”
Jerry Boaz
Cami O’Neal
Suzi Bergin
Judy Rhodes
“I don’t send flowers as often. If there is a special occasion, I’ll buy roses at the grocery store. If there were a florist, I would cater to them because they do a better job arranging.”
“I love fresh flowers. I have to buy them at Costco or Trader Joe’s. Where I live, there are no florists. I don’t even see any until I get into central Phoenix. I do online for people out of state.”
“If I am going to get flowers, I just get them from the store. I don’t like online because what you order online may not be the same. I don’t see myself using a florist if they were here.”
“I would go to Fry’s. Otherwise, I have to go into Phoenix to get them. I think it would be good to have a florist here.”

Valentine’s Day is the biggest holiday for florists. According to Amy Lou Little, owner of Amy’s Plants and Flowers, most of the roses for Valentine’s Day have already been cut and are in warehouses awaiting shipment. She recommends ordering roses early to get the best quality. She also said fans of roses should buy them at other times of year when demand is not so high. Or, score extra points by celebrating Valentine’s Day a week or two early. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2014 |

VALENTINE’S DAY Still a little awkward… By Chris Prickett cprickett@anthemnews.com
E
very day is Valentine’s Day in the Prickett house, or so my wife tells me (yuk, yuk). I guess she’s right, in a way. We don’t make much of a fuss over it these days. With Christmas and several December/ January birthdays still fresh in our minds and on our Visa card, Saint V doesn’t get a whole lot of love around here. I get the feeling some people use it as a “make-up” day, and I apologize enough already. My obligatory 30-second Google “research” revealed, contrary to my long-held belief, Valentine’s Day was not invented by the folks at Hallmark. There was one, or perhaps several Christian saints who went by the name of “Valentinus” a few centuries back. Lore claims he/they performed wedding ceremonies for soldiers forbidden to marry, or healed the daughter of his/their jailer, or signed his/their execution farewell “Your Valentine.” Over time, poets,

religions, and entrepreneurs, the story has morphed into a day where we give and/or get chocolate, flowers, berries, pajamagrams, stuffed animals, jewelry, provocative undies and/or cards. I got a plastic blow-up pillow once. I feel sorry for the kids. When I was in school, you would get to choose to whom you could give your token of love. I never got more than a few, but at least, feast or famine, I knew where I stood. Today, if you give one, you have to give 30 and they have to be identical, so no one feels left out. I get the reasoning, but it kind of loses its value, don’t you think? At 9:15, I get a valentine from Roxanne McFeisty, and at recess she makes me eat an earthworm. Talk about mixed signals! I never know what to do with the card either. Is there an official display period? I usually just put it on my desk until it “accidentally” falls into the waste basket. Am I off the hook with Cupid if I recycle? Fortunately, I have no problems with disposing of the chocolate. io CONTACT ME TODAY FOR A FREE MARKET ANALYSIS • Realtor since 2002 • Professionalism, Good Communication, and Knowledge of the Market is what I deliver to my Client's
