Real Estate Trends: 2013
Living In Anthem & Loving It!
PART 1
Dear Doreen, What are the latest trends in housing for the new year? —Just curious Dear Curious, This interesting article written by a bright Coldwell Banker agent in Eugene, Ore., lists some fascintating trends. Read on… —Doreen The No. 1 most important trend of 2013 will be… wait for it… FLEXIBLE HOME SPACE! This means that dens and libraries must also think of themselves as
possible nurseries and guest rooms. Playrooms and other open space areas should have the potential to be closed off, if need be (think French doors with curtains). And, those remodeling or building new may want to consider making half-baths whole. Every square inch of today’s smaller homes must be usable! Wasted space is not a turn-on.
doreen.drew@coldwellbanker.com
NexT week The second most important trend? Dual… (stay tuned!)

Bye-bye Big Blue?
IN&OUT STAFF PHOTO
W
hat are the plans for the ugly blue advertising trailer that is located between I-17 and North Gavilan Peak Parkway just north of the Pioneer Road overpass? Will this eyesore be there for the foreseeable future, or are there plans to haul this blight away?
Walt McDaniel Anthem
Editor’s Note The trailer belongs to Pulte and has been used as a mobile billboard to sell homes in the Anthem development to people traveling I-17. Pulte spokesperson Jacque Petroulakis said we won’t have to put up with the trailer much longer. There are just a couple more homes to close in the northwest section of Anthem known as Arroyo Grande. Petroulakis predicted the trailer would be moved in a matter of weeks. Got Something to Say? Write to letters@inandoutaz.com. Include full name, your town and daytime phone.
According to Chris Prickett, (who, when not writing for In&Out, is a Realtor) there is only one Anthem new-build left listed as active and one pending on the MLS. The active listing is a 3,600-square-foot former model in Arroyo Grande. ASKING PRICE:

K PACC911 Event Brings Joy to 75 Happy Pets
T
he grey day with temps in the low 50s didn’t discourage pet lovers from the PACC911 adoption event Saturday, Feb. 9. Organizers said 75 pets found new homes. And, many area pet owners discovered a new vet: Dr. Kristin Young, who recently moved to Anthem and opened Daisy Mountain Veterinary Hospital at Anthem Crossroads (the Fry’s plaza), and was on hand to meet pets and pet owners.

irk Douglas, Boulder Creek High School choral director, received the O. M. Hartsell Excellence in Teaching Music Award. The award is given to American Music Educator Association members who demonstrate exceptional ability as a music teacher. “This award is extremely meaningful to me. It gives me affirmation that I am reaching students, and other music educators are seeing that. This is such an honor knowing other music teachers that have received this award,” Douglas said. The names of award recipients get published in the Hall of Fame Luncheon program. “My name will forever be included with the list of phenomenal teachers. I am humbled by my name being placed amongst some of my mentors,” he said. Douglas’ choir performances have been compared to those on the T.V. show “Glee.” io

JCL Steps up Trauma Care By Karen Goveia kgoveia@anthemnews.com
P
atient care services in John C. Lincoln Deer Valley’s Emergency Department have been expanded, and the state of Arizona designated the hospital a Level III Trauma Center, Monday, Feb. 4. The Level III center is the first of its kind in Phoenix. There are six Valley hospitals verified to handle Level
I trauma—the highest level of care available, according to the American College of Surgeons. According to Susan Fuchs, John C. Lincoln Deer Valley spokesperson, the hospital is also launching a program for trauma patients 60 and older to improve outcomes for older trauma patients by providing more intensive and coordinated inpatient care.
Trauma Center Categories
Trauma center categories are designated by the state and criteria can vary. The American College of Surgeons provides a separate verification process based on its own criteria. Verification, a voluntary process initiated by the trauma center, is valid for three years. There are five categories of trauma center: A Level III does not have as much capability as a Level I Trauma Center. Level III Trauma Center Able to provide prompt assessment, resuscitation, surgery, intensive care and stabilization of injured patients and emergency operations. Elements of Level III Trauma Centers Include: •
24-hour immediate coverage by emergency medicine physicians and the prompt availability of general surgeons and anesthesiologists.
•
Transfer agreements for patients requiring more comprehensive care at a Level I or Level II Trauma Center.

Solar Pigeon Nasty
The spikes blocking the space below the solar panels are likely more effective at deterring pigeons than the owl decoy.
I
f pigeons have gotten a bad rap, so be it, the little demons deserve it. The proliferation of solar panels in Anthem has created the perfect loafing quarters for these winged demons, and they are taking full advantage of the accommodations. Like hemorrhoids, once you have pigeons, eradication can be difficult, costly and a real pain in the butt. These “flying rats” are said to be prolific carriers of several deadly maladies such as: psittacosis, aspergillosis, pseudotuberculosis, coccidiosis, toxoplasmosis, encephalitis, and Salmonella typhimurium (Got spell-check?). In truth, those claims are probably more fear-driven than fact driven, but contact with pigeons certainly has the potential to make you sick. (See Pesky Pigeon Risks.) And, the corrosive nature of their feces can also damage property. Their nesting materials clog drains and gutters. If all this isn’t enough, they also carry parasites like fleas, ticks and mites. (See PIGEON on Page 23)
Pesky Pigeon Risks
Health risks from pigeons are often exaggerated, however, large populations of the roosting birds can make you sick. The most typical risk— histoplasmosis—comes from breathing spores from a fungus that grows in soil contaminated with bird droppings. Histoplasmosis affects the lungs. Often a person will not exhibit any symptoms. Those who do get sick typically exhibit flu-like symptoms: fever, chest pain and dry cough. Providing Health Care for Children
(From PIGEON on Page 21)
I don’t like them. The best way to protect your home from pigeons is to not get them in the first place. Never feed pigeons, and ask your neighbors kindly to not feed. This only attracts them, and might make them more susceptible to disease because of the poor nutritional value of the stuff you generally feed them. White bread will make them fat and lazy, just like it does with people. Don’t leave pet food outside and keep your trash covered. If you have pigeons, call a professional. Because they are unsanitary and have a tendency to roost in high places, “pigeon proofing” is dangerous business. Poisons are dangerous and don’t have much effect. Don’t waste your money on frightening devices or decoys, such as plastic owls or snakes. Pigeons are either really smart or really stupid. Either way, these deterrents don’t work. Mylar or foil strips generally provide only temporary relief. You might try shooting them (easy, now!) with a high-pressure stream of water. This may be effective if you’re consistent, but not particularly humane. Some professionals will remove the pigeons but not clean up the poop or install deterrents. Some will do all that and guarantee the pigeons won’t return to the same roosting area. Make sure you know up front what services are provided before you sign, or you might find yourself elbow-deep in fowl filth. io
