Dog-friendly hotels — not so much. I knew it was only a matter of time before our aging air conditioning units called it quits. With rather large dogs, I also knew a hotel was not an option if our units died in the middle of the peak season. My wife and I decided to look into replacement before the inevitable occurred. We had five quotes from both local and larger valley contractors. Travis with ProSkill impressed us with his promptness, knowledge, and thoroughness. Travis was the only contractor to do a calculation on our house, then come back and present a proposal in person. I knew I had my guy! Their pricing was beyond fair for top quality units, especially when considering all the extra work they did beyond just “changing out the boxes”, as Travis says. The final install was a work of art, and the team cleaned up with care. I will gladly continue to refer Travis and the ProSkill team to all my neighbors and friends. - Charles H., Magic and Zoe, Anthem Resident

We live in Anthem. And every representative of ProSkill lives in Anthem, Tramonto or Desert Hills.

ASK DOREEN

RENT MY OWN HOUSE?! Dear Doreen, OK, I finally sold my house. That’s the good news. I have been packing for weeks and am ready to move out. Everything was going fine until yesterday when I heard my movers won’t be here in time. I have asked to stay in my home an extra week but the buyers won’t agree unless I pay rent. How rude is that?! So what do I do? It’s made me so mad I don’t even want them to have my house! Moving & Mad Dear M&M, You are in a legally binding contract. Even though the delay isn’t your fault, the buyers are under no obligation to let you stay longer. Technically, you must be out when the home has closed. It is likely they have made plans based on this closing date and changing the plans will cost them money. It’s possible their lease has ended or they will close on their old home the same day. This means they have to be out as well. If they have to find a place to stay and reschedule their movers, your unexpected delay will cause them extra expense. Or, they might have contractors scheduled to begin work on your house that first week. If the contractor has blocked out time, he might not be able to adjust his schedule. That said, these things happen and can usually be resolved easily if all parties keep a cool head. Offer some cash as a rent-back after closing, or find another moving company. Doreen

FACEBOOK CHATTER Readers react to the news of ACC stepping up enforcement of dog leash laws. [See “Leash Your Dog” In&Out, June 12.] I am scared of dogs as well as my 8 year old and won't go to a park if there is a dog off leash. Thanks for making the parks safe and enjoyable for everyone. —Lorraine Reynolds How about Anthem putting in a dedicated dog park then? —Melanie Seekins I do not think there is a problem and do not have any issues with dogs off of a leash. —Harmony Windbiel Brown “Oh, he's friendly and doesn't bite,” doesn't cut it when a large dog is all up in a kid's face, jumping, slobbering, barking, chasing, etc. Happened to us on a number of occasions here and elsewhere. Leashes, please. —Kathy Boyce Bianco I have gone to the park many, many times when there was a certain person exercising his very large dogs off leash. I have small dogs and I don't care if he says they're friendly. I don't want them to run up to my dogs. Period. Let them go to the dog park, or in their own yard. I'd really like to see the “yellow ribbon” campaign in Anthem, also. —Gina Taddeo THURSDAY, JUNE 26, 2014 |

Arrive early to beat the crowds, and take a few hours just to celebrate. Enjoy the fun, the food, the friends, the family, and of course the joys of settling into a beach chair or picnic blanket and surrendering to the lullaby of a warm summer night.

Traffic northbound on Independence Way or Freedom Way must turn right onto Anthem Way. Traffic exiting the event and heading for I-17 will be directed east on Anthem Way, to access the freeway from Daisy Mountain Drive. The community center and parking lot will close early for use as the staging/fallout area.

Insider Tips

• Buy all-you-can-ride bracelets in advance at the Anthem Community Center for $12. On sale until 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 2. • Arrive early to find parking. Walk or carpool if possible. •B ring water, not beer and wine. The Rotary Club will sell adult beverages in the beer garden. Alcohol is forbidden elsewhere.

• No personal fireworks or open flames. The park’s built-in grills are OK to use. • If you just want to see the fireworks, there are lots of great places for viewing. Check a road map against the road restrictions. • The Outlets provides an alternative viewing experience that begins with a sidewalk sale. Grab dinner at the food court and let the kids enjoy the playground until the light show begins. The view from the Outlets is great.

FRIDAY THE 13TH ‘HONE Y MO ON’

UPCOMING CELESTIAL EVENTS Full Moon and Mercury at Maximum Elongation Saturday, July 12 Mercury will be farthest from the Sun as seen from Earth, making it easiest to see. Best observed just before sunrise.

Meteor Shower

Saturday, July 28 The Delta Aquarids meteor shower, as a result of Earth passing through debris from the Marsden and Kracht comets. Located in the constellation Aquarius. Roughly 20 visible meteors per hour.

Meteor Shower

Friday, Aug. 1 The Alpha Capricornids meteor shower, a result of Earth passing through debris from the comet 169/NEAT. Located

in the constellation Capricornus. Only a rate of 5 visible meteors per hour, but the meteors tend to be spectacular, slow-moving, flaring meteors.

Meteor Shower

Tuesday, Aug. 12 The Perseids meteor shower, a result of Earth passing through debris from the Swift-Tuttle Comet. Located in the constellation Perseus. Rate of 50 visible meteors per hour.

Neptune at Opposition

Friday, Aug. 29 Neptune and Earth will be at their closest distance from one another. Neptune will also be fully illuminated, making this the best time to observe it (requires a telescope). SOURCE: Stargazing Tonight

Skygazers caught an extra special sight on the night of Friday, June 13, and Anthem Prep Science teacher Scott Shaughnessy, below, captured the rare “honey moon” with his backyard telescope (Meade 8-inch LX50 with a Canon 6D). While full moons on Friday the 13th aren’t necessarily rare, what made this celestial event so unique is that it coincided with the perigee (or super moon), the point at which the moon is closest to the Earth, making it appear larger in the sky. The last time this event occurred was June 13, 1919. Full moons in June are commonly referred to as “honey moons,” and Shaughnessy told In&Out, “You could say the full moon last night was a ‘super honey moon.’ ” THURSDAY, JUNE 26, 2014 |

FENCE

EVERYBODY’S

WATCHING

Here’s how you can, too… By Chris Prickett cprickett@anthemnews.com

I

made the decision to install security cameras to the exterior of my home. The decision was simple, the process has been anything but. Let’s face it, like it or not—and I don’t (except when it benefits me), we live in an Orwellian world where there is either a video camera, a drone with a video camera, or a person with a phone/video camera watching nearly every move we make. I figured I might as well get a piece of the action. My first thought was to hire my buddy who works in the home security field to install a system. He quoted me a reasonable price and promptly moved out of state. I’m hoping the two are unrelated. Hiring a home security contractor (and some home theater contractors can also tackle this type of project) is certainly the easiest way to go (provided your contractor has no imminent relocation plans) but also the most expensive. You might not get anything worth spying with for less than $1,000. The alternative, which I researched about as much as my low-tech comprehensive skills will allow, is DIY. This is where the headaches begin.

Wired or wireless system? Night vision or day/night? High-def? Wide angle? How many cameras? Hidden or high profile? I read about a guy who put up “dummy” high profile cameras and real hidden cameras, so he could catch the crooks dismantling the high profile cameras. Tough neighborhood, I guess. If I had more space, I’d break down the good and bad of each of the systems, there are just too many options. So, here’s my advice: You can get a decent DIY system for under $500 if you can comprehend the installation instructions, which range from extremely vague to extremely long and detailed. The wireless systems seem the easiest (mostly because you don’t have to run any wires), but they cost more. In addition to the cameras, you need to purchase a dedicated DVR, a router and, if you want to monitor from your smartphone, an app. This will take a little more than the average level of tech savvy to put together. It is certainly beyond the capacity of my 1980s brain. Before going all “super-nerd,” call a security company and get a quote so you can compare the cost of a pro with the frustration of a DIY. Frankly, that’s what I ended up doing. Add me to the list of Orwellian watchers. io THURSDAY, JUNE 26, 2014 |
