s days go by, New Year’s resolutions seem to recede. Remember, you were going to try to lose weight and get in shape? You definitely planned to eat better. Perhaps the memory of said resolution is brought back into focus briefly when you step on the scale. Good news for those who fit the above profile: You live in an area with a variety of top-notch fitness experts and programs to help you be healthier and feel better about yourself. Curves, a practical program designed for women, recently reopened on Vision Way in the Anthem Commerce Park and is offering great promotions. After the storm of 2012, SWEAT—an intense goal-oriented program—moved front and center into the Safeway plaza. It, too, has promos for new members. And on Feb. 4, Ironwood CrossFit opened its doors on the east side of Anthem, (near Walgreens).
A Matter of Scale “Scale” is a key word in the CrossFit universe. Simply, it means workouts are tailored specifically to the individual. CrossFit classes are meant to fool the body. The husband-wife owners pull that off by varying every workout. “There is always a strength component. It’s very technical form, full-range of motion, functional movement,” said owner/ trainer Tracy Seman. “Everything we do is core to extremities. So their core gets strong. They can get ripped abs without ever doing crunches and get cardio in different ways.” In other words, every part gets exercised, but your body doesn’t get used to doing the same thing every day. Recovery is also important: After a session you will be able to function and not have to go home and lie down, said Seman.

stations throughout the hour. “They format the workout so everyone can do it,” said Erin Rainbolt, who’s been Stroller Striding since January. “Everyone works together. I’m starting to see results and improvements and it’s exciting and motivating,” she said. Stroller Strides suggests new moms wait until baby is 6 weeks old and the doctor has signed off on vigorous exercise before beginning. Older children can ride along with mom on a bike or scooter, said Suzy Stenehjem, owner of InHer Strength Fitness LLC and the Phoenix/Scottsdale franchise.

s children run in a soccer field at Anthem’s community park, a circle of moms stretch on yoga mats next to strollers. One woman yells “30 seconds… 20 seconds… 10 seconds… Great job, ladies!” Moms are working out the best way they can—with children in tow—as members of Stroller Strides fitness group. An international fitness program geared toward new moms, Stroller Strides incorporates strollers, exercise tubing and the environment into a 60-minute full-body workout. The Anthem class meets at the community park Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. and Saturdays at 8:30 a.m. Moms of all fitness levels can join in the interval training, which includes a walking and running loop and muscle-toning
The group gives moms a much-needed opportunity to socialize through play dates and mom’s-night-out events throughout the month. And, let’s face it, grown-up interaction is essential to maintaining sanity. “It’s cheaper than therapy,” said Jenn Owens, one of the instructors. “The benefits far surpass anything Stroller Strides else. It gives me strollerstrides.com more energy and Register by clicking “Programs and Locations.” more patience with my kids,” PRICING (See website for details) she said. First Class: Free
Single Class Pass: $15 “Depression Block Class Pass: $110 is not something Ten Monthly Pass: From $59 openly talked about and this is something that can help with that and help you feel normal,” said Kelly Cantelme, another Stroller Stride instructor. “Motherhood is hard, and forming bonds is so helpful.” New and veteran moms share stories and advice on how to handle the real issues that come up.
Children are entertained by moms singing songs and playing games with them throughout the session. And, Stroller Strides is not just for moms. Dads can jump in for free on Fridays and Saturdays and for $5 any other day of the week with a registered mom. io MARCH 7, 2013 |

The Club Behind the Cupcake By Amanda Niemerg aniemerg@anthemnews.com

ou pull up to the light and the car ahead of you has a pink cupcake sticker on the back window. It’s the fourth time you’ve seen one, but what is it? Are these people members of a secret society of cupcake bakers? Is there a cupcake fan club? Whatever it is, you have a feeling you want in, right? Actually, the stickers proudly denote membership in the Cupcake Runners, a group of women and men who meet Saturday morning to encourage each other while training for various marathons, triathlons, 5Ks and 10Ks. While some of the runners are experienced marathoners, the group welcomes runners of all levels.
“We want everyone to know anyone can do it, even if they’ve never run before,” said Regina Wright, founder of the group. “We were there once ourselves and it can be kind of scary to get off the couch and do something you’ve never done before. We’re a welcoming group and we love encouraging people Visit Cupcake to start their journey. We love to get people Runners on Facebook for running,” she said. up-to-date Wright said the information on group will not be meeting times organizing a couch and places. to 5K group this year, but encourages people to join the club Saturdays at 6 a.m. at the Starbucks on Daisy Mountain Drive. “We will give them a running plan and help them achieve their goals.” io
