ASK DOREEN
Back Out of an Offer Too High?
Dear Doreen, I’m buying a big home near Anthem. I love it but am afraid I might be overpaying. I told my agent I want to have the appraisal done within the 10-day inspection period. I thought it would be easier to cancel during that time than to wait. The seller agreed to the timing but the appraiser, however, did not meet the deadline! If the appraisal comes in lower than my offer, can I still cancel or will I be in breach of contract? I asked my agent but she has yet to respond. I think she’s on vacation! —Frantic for an answer
Dear Frantic, That’s an interesting question and one we don’t hear often. According to our legal expert, the failure to obtain an appraisal in this situation means you can no longer use the appraisal contingency as a basis to cancel the contract. Sorry to be the bearer of that news, as I know you tried to circumvent this very situation. With luck, the appraisal on your big beautiful home will come in just at or above your offer. If not, you might seek out a real estate lawyer for details. —Doreen

Why a Flat Rate Can Be Better A D V E R T I S E M E N T
Q:
(and cheaper!)
“I’ve started researching assisted living options and am completely overwhelmed. We want the best for Mom, but we’re not sure our budget will outlast her life expectancy. How do we choose a facility to be sure her needs are met both short- and long-term?”
A:
First, be sure to add location to your criteria because, let’s face it, if she’s not close, you probably won’t be able to see her as much as either of you prefer. A lengthy journey adds stress to your life, miles to your car and takes time out of your day. Figuring the budget can be tricky. Mom might require increasingly more care as she ages. Will the facility you choose charge more for that care? What about the additional costs you might not anticipate? For
example, who covers the cost of adult briefs—(a trivial-sounding expense that could add up to several hundred per month) if mom becomes incontinent? Consider a facility that charges an all-inclusive flat rate guaranteed not to increase. That will not only be more convenient than sorting through a monthly invoice of extras (difficult for you to monitor), but could very well cost less in the end. The less moves you have to make at this time in her life the better.
Independent Living? Assisted Living? Living with Me (or my brother/sister)? Ask the experts! Cheryl Ables began working
in the senior care field 10 years ago, after taking care of her parents and grandparent while raising her children. Sam Ile and his family have been in the business of assisted living homes for more than 20 years. Sam and Cheryl are approaching ten years as owners of Anthem Senior Living. They also operate Eldermom, a senior placement service and, now, Anthem Senior Retreat Assisted Living home. Sam and Cheryl are experts at the unique challenges posed by aging parents. s school districts try to keep up with 21st century demands, updating classroom technology proves to be a monumental challenge with ever-changing software, relentless upgrades and a lack of funding. So, what’s a district to do when the future demands increasing tech literacy from its graduates? It puts the technology in the hands of the students. Figuratively and literally. Sandra Day O’Connor High School launched a “Tech Rich” pilot program this semester, putting iPads in the hands of 800 students, thanks to funds leftover from the 2005 override. Many of the remaining students are now encouraged to take matters into their own hands by bringing smartphones, e-readers or tablets out from hiding and into practical use, as part of a Bring Your Own Device program. 12

Other high schools such as Boulder Creek and Barry Goldwater also allow some use of personal devices for instructional support at the teacher’s discretion. DVUSD is not the only district that has jumped on this opportunity. According to a Pew Research Center study, 73 percent of Advanced Placement and National Writing Project teachers use cell phones as a classroom teaching tool. Students use their devices to research, download and submit assignments and collaborate with one another, according to the study.

That is DVUSD’s vision for BYOD. Dr. Gayle Galligan, associate superintendent of curriculum, instruction and assessment, said instead of using textbooks which cannot be dynamically updated as information changes, e-textbooks are now preferred.
• Tooth-Colored Fillings
“There is a significant task redesign. Whereas a student might have done a research project on paper, it would be transformed into something that could only be accomplished through online tools.” And, of course, there is the collaboration idea. “It would be possible for teachers to collaborate with other teachers and students could work with their peers in say, Saudi Arabia or England,” Dr. Galligan said.

The BYOD program at SDOHS will be used by approximately 1,000 students initially. To ensure maximum student benefit, students can work in pairs or groups so everyone has access to a device. If successful, it could be implemented into all DVUSD high schools by the 2015– 2016 school year. “The intention is to get through the high schools and then get into the K–6 or K–8 schools. It depends on spending and funding. Our intention and our focus is to expand it, but it’s at least three to seven years in the future,” Galligan said. io

Taking on the Tech Challenge
Outfitting students with technology is right, but challenging. Kudos to DVUSD for a creative solution. By Dr. Dick Buscher ldbuscher@anthemnews.com
H
ooray for the teachers and administration of Sandra Day O’Connor for their willingness to solve a lack of 21st century classroom technology by starting a “Bring Your Own Device” program! Technology will certainly be a huge part of their students’ future, and using today’s technology in the classroom will only enhance student interest, involvement and learning. The Financial Question As a former middle school principal, I predict a potential challenge for educators to involve students whose parents do not have the means to provide their children with a smartphone or tablet. Hopefully, a solution can be reached so students are not left out of this innovative and exciting program. Bridging the Gap A solution might be found by forming relationships with those in the tech industry. Any parent with contacts in the tech world can be tremendously helpful by facilitating business/school partnerships that could
help lead to a classroom set of iPhones, iPads or other smart devices. Knowing the right contacts and the right people is crucial for educators and can result in business/school relationships that are extremely beneficial for all student learning. Potential Abuse Arizona schools have long had strict policies to address misuse or abuse of school technology, and the BYOD program will certainly be covered and administered by these long-established policies. A few abuses are sure to occur due to human nature, but I predict most kids will do what is expected. One of educators’ greatest challenges is looking a decade into the future and preparing their students for that world. While that distant view is always a little foggy, it’s a pretty good bet that the use of technology will be front-and-center in their students’ future work and personal worlds. The BYOD program is certainly a great step in continuing to prepare today’s students. Well done, educators, well done! io

Christina Mcgraw
“I have an 8-year-old daughter. I think it’s OK to use devices as teaching tools. I would not want the use of personal cell phones because I don’t want the possibility of them getting on social media at school.”
“I think it’s good to “I think the idea of using bring new technology common technology as into school. I think it’s a teaching tool makes good for teachers, too, sense, but I wonder as long as inappropriate how the district plans content is blocked.” to monitor its misuse, as well.”

Tech Toys Don’t Cause Bad Behavior Never have. Never will. By Chris Prickett cprickett@anthemnews.com
I
t was the fall of 1970 and I was in sixth grade at Walnut Street Junior High. An announcement came over the PA system that marked the beginning of the decline of our beloved and revered public school system: “Effective immediately, students will be permitted to wear sneakers (“tennies,” gym shoes… what have you) for all classes.” It was anarchy, I tell you. What could be next, blue jeans? I learned recently that some DVUSD schools will be allowing students to actually use their cell phones in class. While this controversial decision will certainly be met with a myriad of strong opinions from the masses, I kind of just yawn. Nothing to see here, folks, in my mumbled opinion. Technology is progressing at supersonic speed and we’re all doing our best just to hang on. Kids can do stuff on their phones what a laboratory full of PHDs couldn’t dream of when I was a kid. And the hits just keep coming. I see no reason to limit access to this miracle of science based on concerns of cheating, underachieving or whatever the naysayers say. Cheaters will cheat. Always have, always will. In my day, it was notes written on a stick of Doublemint. Underachievers will underachieve… Or, maybe not so much if we give them
more tools to learn in a way that suits them a little better than the one-sizefits-all approach we all know doesn’t work. My three kids come from the same DNA, but I guess it was stirred up differently because they definitely do not learn the same way. Truth be told, their dad was a horrible student; I can’t even spell algebra. (Thanks, spell check!) By the time my kids are parents (and I sure hope that’s several years away), their children might take field trips to Jupiter for all I know. If so, I guarantee there will be some knucklehead trying to reprogram the shuttle to do a Saturn drive-by so he can impress his new girlfriend. Always has, always will. io
