Happy Renter… Why Buy?
Dear Doreen, I’m still on the fence as to buying a home. You sold our home as a short sale a few years ago. We’ve been happy renters since. Frankly, I’m afraid to jump back in… Who knows when to do it? Prices are going up so fast, it is scary. What if we have another recession? What if we buy now and our home value drops by 50 percent again? Do you have any idea of where the real estate market is going in 2014? —Afraid to jump Dear Afraid, You are among many. Once bitten, twice shy! My predictions are often as wrong as the next
person. However, the metro Phoenix housing market has been in recovery for two years and it’s been quite a ride. Most experts see a continuing rebound, but at a much slower, more normal pace, from the 30-percent year-over-year spikes of 2013 to more like 5 or 6 percent in 2014. And, watch for mortgage increases. The days of 3.5-percent interest rates are gone. And, new regulations will make it harder to qualify. Buy when you are ready. You still have a lease agreement; Let’s assess the situation when your contract comes to a close. —Doreen

Bell Ringers Raise $22K
T
he Salvation Army Anthem Extension Unit thanks all who helped by ringing the bell or dropping money into the Red Kettle at Walmart, Safeway or Fry’s during the holiday season. Your generosity helped raise $22,081―every penny of which stays local to help those in need within the 85085, 85086 and 85087 zip codes. Anthem Giving Circle partnered with the local Salvation Army unit Saturday, Dec. 7 on a coat and toy drive at Walmart. Again, the generous people in our area donated over 75 coats and 225 toys. These items were distributed by Hands Across Anthem, Daisy Mountain Firefighters and Foothills Food Bank. Thanks to all who helped make this a brighter Christmas season for those less fortunate.

Outlets Access Still Treacherous
S
omething should be done with the entrance to the Outlets. There should be a light, a policeman or someone to direct traffic in and out.
We live on 44th Lane and the only way out is Anthem Way. We have almost been hit dozens of times by cars coming across Anthem Way and then cutting us off, trying to get to the freeway. One vehicle just came out and stopped in front of us. I think he just got tired of waiting. This disaster gets worse during events and holidays. I know there is another exit, but nobody uses it.

FACEBOOK CHATTER Readers react to the news of bobcat sightings in Anthem neighborhoods. [See “Sharing Territory Can be Deadly,” Jan. 9.] I saw two coyotes come out of a wash on Memorial this a.m., cross the street and then hang out waiting… Instead of quickly walking away, a woman with a dog thought it was better to go “investigate.” I almost drove off the road in amazement of someone’s lack of knowledge and ignorance to do such a thing… her poor dog must have been terrified!! —Michelle Mantle-Gonzalez My husband saw the same two coyotes and the woman with the dog. He turned around to warn her because they were standing, waiting on the sidewalk and she laughed him off! —Jacki Rodgers Nasi The bobcat in our neighborhood is huge. I see him weekly, often several times. He’s getting more and more aggressive, coming to back sliding doors, walking into courtyards. We have had 2 reports from families that think it got their dog. I respect wildlife and their territory, but I hope nothing bad has to happen before Game and Fish would consider trapping and moving. —Candace Patzer Crandall That is crazy… I have a very large breed dog and even though we have a doggie door, we take Mousse out in the backyard. We back up to a wash. —Margie Wingate Craig JOIN THE CONVERSATION Like us at Facebook.com/ AnthemNews.

A Tragedy, Yet Could Have Been Much Worse
T
his Deer Valley School District bus lost control and crashed into a block wall of a residence along Dove Valley Road early Jan. 22, leaving the driver dead. The driver, 56-year-old Lawrence Joseph Plante had been a school bus operator for DVUSD for 10 years. There were only two passengers: a 14-year-old and an aide. Both were uninjured. Neighbor Shannon Severson didn’t hear the impact, but said, “I
was awoken early, started hearing helicopters and didn’t know what it was... I heard a siren briefly and could see flashing red lights… I saw it was my neighbor’s house just a few doors down.” It took six hours before two tow trucks hoisted the bus from the yard. A large portion of the block wall was destroyed. Remarkably, the bus was still operational. The cause of the accident is under investigation. io

Seattle-based Merrill Gardens has its sights set on the eight-acre parcel owned by Canyon Church of Christ at the southwest corner of Daisy Mountain Drive and Meridian Drive, adjacent to St. Rose Catholic Church; land currently zoned for church/school use.

The proposal from Merrill Gardens calls for a mix of independent living, assisted living and Alzheimer’s care, similar to its other communities in Alabama, California, Nevada and Washington. Plans for the project, according to Bill Pettit, vice chairman of R.D. Merrill Company, include at least 100 housing units initially, with the capacity to build additional units in the future. Pettit said his company is not, however, pursuing a four-acre adjacent parcel at this time. Defining the Need A handful of smallerscale senior housing options available in the greater Anthem area begs the question of need for a complex as large as Merrill Gardens is proposing.
Pettit said the privately-owned, family operated, 20-year-old senior housing company targeted Anthem due to the lack of options available for the area’s aging population. “As we look at different markets, we want to make sure seniors have good quality choices for where they want to live. Anthem does not have an experienced senior housing operator and we believe it is an excellent location for our form of senior living,” he said. Cheryl Ables and Sam Ile own and operate two small-scale assisted living homes―Anthem Senior Living and Anthem Senior Retreat. For the past decade Ables and Ile have been fulfilling a niche for those seeking individualized care in a home-setting, but they agree the need to serve the area’s seniors in a greater capacity is growing. “We own Eldermom which is a placement service. We are very familiar with large scale facilities, and in the event someone calls us looking for a more independent, less care-to-client ratio and something that is more affordable, there isn’t a large scale option within five miles of Anthem. Having more options for our Anthem residents would be positive,” Ables said. Pulte Gets Final Say At its Jan. 22 meeting, Council approved a motion requiring Merrill Gardens to host a public meeting in the coming weeks, inviting community members, representatives from Anthem’s three HOAs, residents in surrounding neighborhoods and St. Rose church representatives to weigh in. But, Council’s legal representative was quick to remind the board and staff that even if the ACC votes in favor of granting the variance, Pulte/Del Webb will still have final say on the project. The supplemental declarations created by Del Webb do not provide for an assisted living

facility on that parcel, so ultimately Pulte/Del Webb decides. Following the public meeting, the ACC board will consider the project and the request for variance at its Feb. 26 meeting. If approved, Council would then request approval from Pulte/Del Webb. Massive Project Board member Tim Fyke serves on the Commercial Design Review Advisory Committee and is familiar with the project details. He stressed that Anthem residents should be made aware of the scope and size of the project on the invitations. “Everyone should know it is a twostory, 300,000 square-foot facility... Right now it sounds like it could be a cute little project, when actually it is a very massive project.” io

hen it comes to fighting the flu, women might have a distinct advantage according to a new study that links testosterone to flu vulnerability. The study, published in the “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences,” found women who were vaccinated against the flu had a higher antibody response to the virus than men, and men with the highest testosterone levels showed the lowest antibody response. Cold and flu symptoms in Maricopa County are said to be moderate to severe as of this writing. Track flu activity at symptoms. webmd.com.cold-and-flu-map-tool.

uperstition Wilderness. The name conjures visions of a harsh, rugged environment, symbolic of the mythical, magical Wild West. Luckily this very special wilderness area is the real deal and is easily accessible by car, boat, bike or foot.

Comprised of 242 square miles of harsh, mostly undisturbed landscapes, the Superstition Wilderness borders the far eastern edge of the Valley of the Sun near Apache Junction. Sonoran Desert vegetation leads to a few pockets of ponderosa pine at the highest elevations. Exploring this terrain can be one of the most classic, extreme backcountry experiences in the world. Or, it can be tamed to create an exciting adventure for the average family. Here’s how:
Drive the Apache Trail. Pavement makes the first 16 miles past Canyon Lake to Tortilla Flat easy to drive. If you’re looking for an adventure, drive the 44 miles to Roosevelt Dam. This white-knuckle experience—think cliffs with no guard rails—offers views that rival the Grand Canyon.
The Superstition Mountain Museum is a great place to start, where artist Ted DeGrazia’s collection is on display. Info superstitionmountainmuseum.org.
Hike through Peralta Canyon and gaze upon Weavers Needle, the icon of the Superstition Wilderness. The 2.5-mile hike to the overlook through lush desert vegetation explodes with wildflowers by mid-February. We have made this hike with children as young as 6. Be sure to take water, sunscreen, a hat and good hiking shoes. Info eastvalleyguide.com/peralta-trailto-fremont-saddle. io
Grab a picnic lunch and enjoy the trails of Lost Dutchman State Park. With spring wildflowers in bloom, this state park is an outdoor treasure to discover. For a unique experience, try a moonlight hike. Info azstateparks.com/Parks/loDU

Mom Stopped Bathing. Help! A D V E R T I S E M E N T
Q: A:
“As my mother has gotten less mobile, she has let bathing fall by the wayside, it seems. As her son, I’m uncomfortable with this topic. What should I do?”
There are several reasons seniors might have trouble with hygiene. And this is something that requires your attention.
Or, depression could be the culprit. This can spiral downward quickly if the depression is tied to the loss of independence your mom is feeling.
My guess is showering is not the only thing mom’s having trouble with. Poor hygiene is a warning sign that she might not be OK on her own any more.
Maybe she just needs help moving around in the shower. This can raise issues of independence and modesty. But looking the other way in order to protect her feelings might be dangerous.
Is it possible she’s not aware her hygiene has become an issue? This could be a sign of memory loss. According to the CDC, some 80,000 U.S. seniors have non-fatal bathroom injuries every year. And fear of falling might be behind your mother’s aversion to the bath.
Ask mom gently why she’s not showering. Then seek the help she needs. A third party is often the answer. We find residents at Anthem Senior Living or Anthem Senior Retreat quickly transition to the new routine and accept assistance better than if it were a family member.
Independent Living? Assisted Living? Living with Me (or my brother/sister)? Ask the experts! Cheryl Ables began working
in the senior care field 10 years ago, after taking care of her parents and grandparent while raising her children. Sam Ile and his family have been in the business of assisted living homes for more than 20 years. Sam and Cheryl are approaching ten years as owners of Anthem Senior Living. They also operate Eldermom, a senior placement service and, now, Anthem Senior Retreat Assisted Living home. Sam and Cheryl are experts at the unique challenges posed by aging parents.
