Living In Anthem & Loving It!

Key Questions For The Seller? Dear Doreen, I’ve bought 10 homes in the past 25 years and am in the market again. I’m locked in with an experienced, smart agent, but, she is not willing to ask the seller the questions I want answered. Most, she says, are handled in the seller’s disclosure. Do you think these are unreasonable questions? Why is the seller moving? How much did the seller pay for the home? How much does the seller owe on the home? How did the seller decide the asking price? are there any nuisances or problem neighbors? are there any crime problems or any litigation? What problems have you had with

this house? What is the reputation of public schools in the area? What do you like most and least about this home? —Savvy Buyer Dear Savvy, I like your questions. However, your agent is correct in that some are answered in the disclosures, or the buyer’s advisory that gives you the ability to go online to get answers. Many other questions are insightful and not in any disclosures. I particularly like the last one. Keep up the good work, you are on the right track. —Doreen

In Search of Scooters Stolen During Dog Attack

I

have two children, 4 and 6 years old, and a 1-year-old dog. We live on the west side of Anthem and on Wednesday, June 26 we were at the pocket park by our house (Cottontail Road and 46th Lane). We had our dog Abby with us on a leash looking at frogs right behind the park. All of a sudden, three large unleashed dogs surrounded us and attacked and bit my dog as I was holding her. She was bitten severely on the back which required surgery. As this was happening, my kids’ scooters were stolen by someone at the park. My kids are so sad about

what happened to their dog; to have their scooters stolen on top of that has been really hard on them. If anyone has information on their scooters we would greatly appreciate it. They are mini-kick scooters, one pink and one blue. My kids are heartbroken having witnessed the dog attack and then not understanding their scooters being stolen.

“You Left Your Wallet… Where?”

I

just wanted to say how grateful I am for the honesty of one of my fellow Anthem residents. Last Wednesday, I left my wallet on the roof of my car as I left for work at 4:30 a.m. I did not realize I had done this until I arrived at my office and received a phone call from a complete stranger: Izabela… who said she found my wallet on her morning walk. My wallet had fallen off my car and my credit and debit cards Witness a random kind act? Forward@AnthemNews.com

had scattered all over the road. Izabela was kind enough to collect all the items that had fallen out of my wallet, down to the last dollar, and put everything back in my wallet and held it until my wife was able to pick it up from her shortly thereafter. Needless to say, Izabela saved me from a big headache. Having fellow residents such as Izabela confirms why we are so lucky to live in a place like Anthem.

Covering Yarnell Questions for Helicopter Pilot Sam Farris

Photos by Sam Farris

I

f you’ve seen aerial footage of the tragic Yarnell fire, there’s a good chance former Anthem resident Sam Farris was flying the helicopter. Farris (Anthemites may remember him as owner of Western Traditions Realty), flies for Helicopters Inc., providing shared coverage for news stations KTVK-TV (Channel 3), KPHO-TV (CBS Channel 5) and KPNX-TV (NBC Channel 12). Farris also flies a chopper for the Phoenix Police Department.

Q

You flew over Yarnell today to cover the wildfire that killed 19 firefighters. What were your thoughts as you were taking off? Yarnell is just about 55 miles straightline distance from Deer Valley airport, which is our base. The smoke plumes from the fire were visible almost as soon as we launched. I knew it was going to be a big one. 14

IN&OUT

| THURSDAY, july 11, 2013

Describe what you saw… I’m familiar with the area as I’ve taken a bunch of motorcycle trips through it. It was sad to see the destruction that was taking place from Yarnell to Peeples Valley. From our altitude of 9,000 feet above sea level, we were able to view the entire scene. The destruction was massive. The top of Yarnell Hill was ablaze and the flatter terrain to the northeast was

A

actively burning with dynamic shifts in wind direction. It was awful to see the damage to wildlife, natural vegetation— and to see the volume of residents who were being displaced. At the same time, it was uplifting to see the coordinated efforts of the fire crews working to gain control of the wildfire. Why is this such a challenging flight for a helicopter? Nearly all of the challenges of flight are provided courtesy of Mother Nature. In today’s operation, we experienced high winds, rapid wind shifts, high heat, lower visibility and high altitude. These components combine to create potential hazards in the way of degraded aircraft performance and a more challenging crew environment. “Air Attack” and the fire fighting command structure allow the media to operate in the airspace as long as we comply with their instructions and not further complicate things. So, in order to provide access to the TFR (temporary flight restriction) area for filming and reporting, the Air Attack airplane… will assign us the highest workable altitude. Today, our assigned altitude was 8,500 feet which keeps us out of the way and above the action. Operating at high altitudes in high temps requires pilots to monitor instruments more closely, to ensure aircraft limitations are not exceeded… So it’s riskier and a heck of a lot more stressful? It’s just a more unforgiving environment to fly in. You have to respect it and be on top of your game. When did you find out about the Hotshot team? In the helicopter community, we all share information during these events. I was notified around 5 p.m. by an EMS

Foreclosures Down:

Community Clean-up Canceled

O

ne hundred and eight homes were abandoned, foreclosed or otherwise neglected and in need of landscape clean-up. It was 2008, and 300 or so volunteers from the community banded together to tackle the job. The Community Clean-up event that has fostered pride in residents and beautified the community, has happened every year since… until this one. Anthem Parkside is delighted to announce that fewer than 20 vacant homes required clean-up this year, and Valley Crest Landscaping agreed to handle it at no charge. The community, no doubt, will find other ways to bond.

9-1-1?

What’s your emergency… (or non-emergency)? By Chris Prickett cprickett@anthemnews.com

I

recently slaved over a boiling keyboard to deliver a quintessential list of important numbers to enter into your contact list. You never got around to actually programming those numbers but, “whatevs,” as I’m told the hipsters no longer say. Now let’s talk about when to call the cops. Anyone with half a walnut for a brain knows that 9-1-1 is reserved for EMERGENCIES ONLY. (Yes, I’m yelling at you.) From the mouth of www.911.gov: An emergency is any situation requiring immediate assistance from the police, fire department or ambulance. Examples: • A fire (where it shouldn’t be) • A crime (especially if in progress) • A car crash (especially if someone is injured) • A medical emergency (such as someone who is unconscious, gasping for air or not breathing, experiencing an allergic reaction, having chest pain, having uncontrollable bleeding, or any other symptoms requiring immediate medical attention.)

NOTE: If you’re not sure whether you have true emergency on your hands, it’s best to dial 9-1-1 and let the operator make the call. Non-emergencies If you’ve safely determined your situation is not an emergency, there’s a number for that, too. It’s the non-emergency number. This is who you would call for suspicious activity, disruptively loud parties and idiots driving motorized vehicles through the wash behind my house. Especially that last one. I have, in the past, wrongly thought it was a waste of valuable police time and resources to call about relatively minor infractions. Did you get the part where I said “wrongly”? (Doesn’t happen often, so I thought I’d bring it to your attention.) I recently learned the number of calls from a particular location dictates the amount of resources allocated to that area. With budgets being nipped and tucked, less calls mean less cops on the beat. Less cops can mean longer wait times no matter what the (non-)emergency. So, the next time you see an idiot driving a quad behind my house (or yours) call a cop... Just make sure you use the non-emergency digits. io
