Dog-friendly hotels — not so much. I knew it was only a matter of time before our aging air conditioning units called it quits. With rather large dogs, I also knew a hotel was not an option if our units died in the middle of the peak season. My wife and I decided to look into replacement before the inevitable occurred. We had five quotes from both local and larger valley contractors. Travis with ProSkill impressed us with his promptness, knowledge, and thoroughness. Travis was the only contractor to do a calculation on our house, then come back and present a proposal in person. I knew I had my guy! Their pricing was beyond fair for top quality units, especially when considering all the extra work they did beyond just “changing out the boxes”, as Travis says. The final install was a work of art, and the team cleaned up with care. I will gladly continue to refer Travis and the ProSkill team to all my neighbors and friends. - Charles H., Magic and Zoe, Anthem Resident

We live in Anthem. And every representative of ProSkill lives in Anthem, Tramonto or Desert Hills.

We Advertise Our Prices Rather than “matching” the other guys, we believe in offering the best rates from the beginning. ProSkill has the prices the other guys have to try to match.

COLOR ME SOLD! Dear Doreen, We recently painted our walls dark grey and lighter grey—Restoration Hardware style. It looks so upscale! But my agent said to repaint. What?! Red With Anger Dear Red, I tell my clients three things sell a house: location, condition/upgrades and price. But a recent post listing buyers’ common objections revealed a trend: • “Nice home but buyers did not like black bamboo flooring.” • “Tinted windows, gray walls, and black furniture… felt intimidating to my buyers.” • “Buyers felt dark colors were depressing. (Is seller divorced?)” • “With energy-saving bulbs… house felt dark and gloomy.” • “Kitchen too dark. Dark cabinets and black appliances have to go.” • “…Felt house was too dark…wouldn’t even go upstairs.” • “Didn’t like beige walls, beige carpeting, white tile, white counters and white appliances.”

Don’t ignore the power of color! It can create a strong enough reaction to sway a buyer. Consult an interior designer for advice on the right colors to make your home feel cheerful, calm and spacious. Call me if you need a reference. Doreen

Q: A:

Don’t Put it Off

“Watching my friend go through the trauma of having to find assistance for her mom after she broke her hip has been a real eye-opener. How do we prevent this sudden stress with our mom?” When you’re dealing with emotions, finances and, in most cases, time restraints, nothing can be more stressful! Our best advice: Do your homework now. If the thought has crossed your mind, it’s time to start researching.

Anthem Senior Living (ASL) and Anthem Senior Retreat (ASR) are licensed on all levels of care and can accommodate only 10 residents each. We are licensed to give peronalized care at every level: Independent Living, Supervisory Level, Personal Level and Directed Level. We also specialize in Memory Care. All rooms are private and come furnished with flat screen TVs. Medication Management, home-cooked meals, assistance with showers, toileting and dressing as needed, daily acitivities, entertainment—It’s all included! And your monthly rate will NEVER increase! It’s a home-like atmosphere with 24/7 care and pampering that is affordable in beautiful Anthem! Call or email to schedule a tour. Seeing the luxurious options available so close to home will alleviate a good amount of stress when the time comes.

Independent Living? Assisted Living? Living with Me (or my brother/sister)? Ask the experts! Cheryl Ables began working

in the senior care field 10 years ago, after taking care of her parents and grandparent while raising her children. Sam Ile and his family have been in the business of assisted living homes for more than 20 years. Sam and Cheryl are approaching ten years as owners of Anthem Senior Living. They also operate Eldermom, a senior placement service and, now, Anthem Senior Retreat Assisted Living home. Sam and Cheryl are experts at the unique challenges posed by aging parents. Have a question? Write or call today! 602-909-9550,

cheryl@eldermom.com. Help is on the way!

The change in scenery provided by these 40-foot tiered falls makes you appreciate Arizona’s biodiversity. The falls offer several different points of entry. Start downstream and hike up to the top, stopping along the way to dip in several different pools. Or, park at the top and hike to the bottom. A variety of fitness levels are accommodated here. There are plenty of areas to picnic and enjoy the cool water of the East Verde River. Wear water shoes. Pack a picnic and plenty of water. The falls are popular, so parking may be difficult. 14

Residents Oppose E.R. Location By Amanda Niemerg aniemerg@anthemnews.com

A

handful of some 50 residents who attended a June 12 community meeting on a proposed freestanding emergency room expressed concern about its location in the Anthem Crossroads shopping center. The 24-hour outpatient, for-profit facility proposed by Arizona General Hospital plans to offer CT, X-ray and ultrasound imaging and a laboratory. But, according to CEO William Comer, the 6,000 squarefoot facility would not be a trauma center and would not accept ambulances. The E.R. would be equipped to stabilize anyone seeking care, but patients requiring more intensive care would be transported to another facility. Diane Wren, Anthem resident and nurse practitioner at Alliance Medical, expressed concern echoed by the many at the meeting. “I’m very concerned as to why you’re suddenly putting this in a very affluent area, a for-profit center in a very, very bad parking lot when you have lots of other options from here to Prescott.” But, Comer said data collected by his company shows that, even with the John C. Lincoln Sonoran Health facility just five miles south, a facility in Anthem is warranted. “When we look at the demographics, when we look at the statistics, when we look at the anticipated patient volumes, given what we see in this community, there is a need for an emergency room right here,” Comer said.

future community meeting with a network physician. He said Arizona General is negotiating contracts with Valley hospitals so patients in need of transport would have choices. When asked if the E.R. would benefit the future Merrill Gardens assisted-living population if ambulances will not be accepted, Comer told In&Out, “I have not had any conversations with [Merrill Gardens]. I just heard a couple of days ago that they were coming in. I would be happy to talk with them to see if there is a relationship of some sort.” Despite the opposition to the project, Council may have little effect on the outcome. According to Chief Community Officer Jenna Kollings, the E.R. meets guidelines set by Pulte Del Webb for acceptable use of that land. The project is under review by ACC’s commercial design review committee and must go through Maricopa County’s review process. Council President Tim Fyke said he and other board members had concerns similar to those expressed by residents. While the ACC may have to approve the project based on its own guidelines, Fyke said the board may go to the county to express that the E.R. is not what the community wants. Arizona General Hospital network is new to Arizona. Its parent company, Adeptus Health is based out of Texas. NEXT STEPS

Ding-Dong… The Doorbell’s Dead! PHOTO BY NOURIE BORAIE

By Chris Prickett cprickett@anthemnews.com

f you’ve been getting phantom doorbell rings and you have an “Aiphone” doorbell/intercom system, it’s probably not that wild Bart-Simpson-looking terror down the street. And, you don’t have a short-circuited melon. (Well, you might, but it’s probably got nothing to do with the phantom doorbell.) What you likely have is a short-circuited doorbell.

Most Aiphone doorbell systems consist of two boxes of circuitry: a sender (the doorbell button), and a receiver (the thing that goes dingdong in your house). Some have an extra receiver on the back patio. The ding-dong part sits comfortably in your climate-controlled home, while the button box roasts in the unforgiving afternoon sun. After five or 10 years, that button box’s brain gets frazzled and starts dinging and donging for no reason other than to annoy, frighten or otherwise keep you

from the quiet enjoyment you deserve after a hard day. Many of the usual online stuffpeddlers sell the bell button box (called a “door station”) and the ding-dong box (called a “master station”) together, for anywhere from $50 to $100, but I can’t seem to find a place that sells them separately. If you want to spend that kind of dough, the change out is pretty easy, just a couple screws, a couple wires (low voltage—they won’t bite), and a couple minutes and you have returned your home to whatever level of sanity you had before the bell went bonkers.

FENCE

If, like me, you never used the intercom feature, you can get a regular doorbell kit for around $20. The only additional hardware you’ll need is a standard metal outlet cover “blank.” You’ll need this to cover the big rectangular hole where the bell button box was. Use a small drill to make two holes for the new button screws and one to push the wire through. Make sure you paint that 3-by-5inch metal cover within 38 seconds of installation or risk a nasty-gramish ding-dong from you-know-who. io
